- Contact lens products (can never find them here and if I ask for them, I usually get a blank look) - Contact lenses (as I'm blind as a bat) - Nescafé Frappé (it's not even in the supermarket back home, have to go to the Nestlé shop) - Magazines (in French and English) - White tea for DH - DVDs With all the pressies DS gets each time, I usually struggle to close my suitcase! ;) I get white tea with pomegranate in Almaya in the Marina, I haven't seen plain white tea though if that is what you need. Also sorry if this is a stupid question but which contact lense producta do you struggle to get here? I get lenses and solution without a problem. The only thing I can't get is the type of holder I like for them - I can only get the flat ones and not the cylindrical ones, I have to get my Mum to send me her spares!

I have to confess that I am able bodied and sometimes use the lift in the metro stations! I get the metro every day to work and if I am in a rush and see the lift is arriving as I am about to walk past it then I hop in - it can save me a couple of minutes which can mean the difference between catching a train and missing it. Especially when the escalator is clogged with people who stand rather than walk and don't stick to one side of the escalator so nobody can get past - don't even get me started on that one! Although I would never get in the lift if it meant that someone who actually needed it wasn't able to get in. For me it is a saving time thing - if the lift isn't there then I will use the escalator rather than wait for it. I actually find the metro to be quite chivalrous in terms of pregnant women and women in general. I have never seen a pregnant woman have to stand - I have given my seat a couple of times but usually before I have chance to someone else will jump up. And on a couple of occasions men have given me their seats which really surprised me - let's just hope it isn't because they thought I was pregnant :)

Apologies if this sounds patronising - it is not meant to - but you know that they can come whilst you are out? You may prefer to supervise in which case I understand why you would like to be there but otherwise you could let them come during the day and come home to a lovely clean house :)

I travelled to Oman in July and had to pay AED 200 as was not with my sponsor (husband), very annoying! However my friends who were sponsored by their employers only had to pay the AED 50. I don't know whether the rules may have changed since though if some of you have had a different experience.

My husband called up the bank which we have our credit card with to inform them of a change of address and phone number. Unfortunately they were unable to process the request - despite asking him a whole host of security questions, all of which he passed with flying colours, they were not able to confirm that it was really him unless he called from his phone number that they hold on record. Which, incidentally, is the phone number he no longer has - hence his phone call! Complete fail. Something similar happened to us with a 4 letter bank. I kept calling back, again and again and each time I gave them the answers, they kept failing me. Once they even failed me on my own middle name!!! Haha it's so frustrating! I have similar issues with Etisalat - I can't make any account changes over the phone with them because apparently I am incorrect when telling them where and when I bought my phone and what my name is. Hmmmmm.

OMG - am i the only British person who has never had a doner kebab.... they look vile and smell even worse.... I haven't either! My husband loves them but I really think they smell horrendous. Having said that I am by no means a health freak, I very much miss scoffing a pizza or a chicken kebab after a night out! The only option we have these days is to stop by the Fish & Chip Room on the way home for fish, chips and baked beans, mmmmmm.

It seems to be common here, it is so frustrating. I was going on holiday a few weeks ago and was flying on Thursday evening - I had booked an appointment to have my eyebrows done after work on the same day, unfortunately it was last minute as it had been a busy week. My appointment was at 7pm but I was delayed at work and I called them at 6:45 to say that I was on my way but I would be 15 mins late - only to be informed that the lady who does eyebrows was sick and I could not have my appointment. I asked whether she had been sick all day or had she just gone home and they said that she had not been there all day so I would have to go the next day instead. I was so mad as they should have called me in the morning and I could then have gone somewhere during my lunch hour at work - I explained this to them and they didn't seem to understand why I was angry - I couldn't then get an appointment anywhere else and had to go on holiday with dodgy eyebrows :( They would have just let me turn up for my appointment before they actually told me if I hadn't have called them, grrrrr.

I read this in Arabian Business last week.... http://www.arabianbusiness.com/all-dubai-expats-pay-housing-fees-by-june-425660.html Why wouldn't they be charged? How is that fair? Anywhere else in the world, this would be backdated. It's just like the Salik Fiasco... all those people that never bothered to get the tag and then they waived all the fines. The idiots that did get the tag, well I guess they are just idiots ( Me included) As far as I know it isn't something you are asked to register for - we don't pay housing fee at the moment and it is not that I have made any effort to escape it, it has just never appeared on our bill and we have never received any correspondence from DEWA about it - so why should I be charged a huge backdated fee? The only reason I even know about it is from reading on here so if DEWA have made no effort to claim it from me then I don't feel that it is my responsibility. And seeing as my DEWA bills seem to be skyrocketing for some unknown reason (1150 last month for a 2 bed apartment and this definitely isn't including a housing fee) then I am even more glad that I am not paying it yet. Having said that I do think it is unfair that some people pay and others don't - it should be everyone or no one. I will pay it without argument when DEWA finally catch up with me!

Does anyone know how much approximately a large wooden chest would be from Luckys or Pinkys? I was given some money from a family member as a gift to buy something to remind us of our time here - I know they are not locally crafted but it would still be something I bought here and would rather get it from one of these individual places than from Marina etc. But before I trek down there it would be good to get an idea as to whether the money I have would cover a piece of furniture or nowhere near. Thanks :)

As far as I am aware the housing fee is 5% of your rent - so this would mean that your rent is AED 173,760 - if that is correct then yes that amount for your housing fee is correct and it is paid each month.

What a nightmare - but as your husband says, you have done your bit so if she gets stopped and detained then it is her own fault. I would be more concerned for your other friend because if they are travelling together she could also be implicated if there is a problem.

Thanks for all your reponses, I know it was a tough question as there are lots of factors to take into account. I just needed to get an idea, to make sure we are not going to be out of pocket and scrimping and saving and not being able to go out to meet people as I would rather be doing that at home (uk) where I do know people and have a support network, That is a good point because there is definitely a very sociable culture here and always something going on - it is especially difficult when you first arrive because to make new friends you want to say yes to everything that is going on.

As other have said - it depends on your lifestyle, if you make an effort to save money and only do cheap or free activities (beach, camping, low cost restaurants) then you can live on much less than if you are wanting to go out every weekend, pay for babysitters, take the kids to clubs, lessons etc. But to give an idea of some costs: Cars = approx 1700 per month for cheapest hire car (such as Toyota Yaris which would not be a great family car) but if you buy a car then you can get a better car (such as a 4x4) and pay this amount towards the loan each month Dinner in hotel restaurant = 500 - 1500 for 2 people including wine depending on number of courses, amount of wine Dinner in non hotel restaurant = From 50 dirhams per person Bottle of wine in restaurant or bar = minimum 150 Bottled of beer in restaurant or bar = minimum 40 Rent = 10000+ per month depending on area, size of villa DEWA (water and electricity) bills = 500+ per month, will be much more in the summer and if you have a pool Live in maid = Up to 2000 per month Part time maid = 30+ per hour Not sure where you are from but things like clothes, shoes, hair cuts are more expensive than the UK. School fees I have no idea about but I am sure that someone will be able to give you an idea. I also don't know how much any other child related costs would be but again I am sure there are plenty of people on here who do.

I don't know whether any of you have heard the rather 'public safety announcements' or whatever they call them on the radio which tell you that if you put your food in the same carrier bag as your shampoo then you will get food poisoning? Well we were in Waitrose last week and I am not fussy about which items share bags, I just chuck everything in as quickly as possible. So the girl on the till keeps looking over at me and seems to be getting increasingly agitated, then she spots me putting a (sealed) bag of cucumbers in the same bag as a (sealed) box of washing powder it all gets a bit too much and she tells me that I can't put food and laundry items together, I just laugh it off and say I don't mind but she isn't having it and launches herself over to where my bag is, snatches the cucumbers out and puts them in a separate bag - I didn't quite know what to think! Clearly they take food safety very seriously! It's certainly put me off packing my own bags in the supermarket :)

Just a warning to be careful when shipping - I was charged 200 dirhams last week in customs charges and I am not sure why, I was only expecting to pay 70 and ended up paying 270 :( Possibly due to the value of the package, who knows. I have seen people before saying that shop n ship means that you avoid risk of customs charges unlike normal online shopping shipping but it isn't true! how much was the value of your package? was it above 270 USD? Yes it was - is that the point that customs start poking through it? Thanks for the info if so, I will bear that amount in mind in future!

It may be full booked as well but I love the Fairmont in Abu Dhabi - it is very relaxing and usually has good deals including meal, late check out etc. But if you can't get a hotel at all then you could go to a hotel beach club for the day and do some watersports? Have a nice long lunch whilst you are there.

Green Eye is a good one - and in all shops make sure you ask to see their 'secret room' otherwise you only get to see the dodgy stuff in the main shop. If you are looking for something specific then have a good look at the real thing to make sure that the fake one has all of the features, some of them are impossible to tell apart from the real ones!

It may be worth seeing a dermatologist - a friend of mine developed a skin infection which would sometimes be OK and other times (such as when she shaved) would flare up and she would have the itching and soreness that you have described - it is worth checking out.

friend of mines SIL is mid 40's and has an almost obssessional crush and infatuation with a singer of about 20, who is gay, so its not like hes going to run off with her. they havent met or will ever. but shes now running up huge phone bills ringing his hotline, down loading everying on computer about him, doing nothing in house etc just this kid all the time. her husbands at his wits end and doesnt know what to do. their kids are older so not really an issue regards her leaving or anything like that. but whats to do about it any advice anyone. thank you so much. I think she needs counselling or something, I don't mean to be offensive but that is seriously bizarre behaviour for a woman of her age, especially if it is affecting her relationship with her husband. There is nothing wrong with thinking that someone other than your husband is attractive but not to act on it - and spending time and money and upsetting your husband definitely counts as acting on it in my opinion.

A selfish shallow wish if I had to pick one would definitely be that I could wake up tomorrow with the perfect body and no amount of eating or lack of exercise would ever take it away from me :) But actual not quite so shallow wishes would be to bring back my grandparents, to be able to teleport myself instead of long and expensive journeys to see friends and family and of course to get rid of all illness (including CT's big sister) and evil in the world! Not much to ask then..... <em>edited by dibdab on 22/10/2011</em>

I have also started the 30 day shred but prior to that (and now as well as) I FORCE myself to go to gym classes 3 times a week - spinning, yoga, body pump..... I can't do the normal gym, I totally lack motivation and don't put in effort when I get there but in the classes I have to. I wish I was one of those people who loves exercise, I absolutely hate it and really have to drag myself. But I absolutely love my food so it's a necessary evil :(

I usually round to the nearest 10 so in this case I would have told him to only give me 20 dirhams back - there is no way I would give 27 and especially if he was looking like he was going to take it anyway. I always tip here unless there is a reason not to but it makes me angry when people just don't offer change, it is rude as I believe that a tip should be earned and not expected. But then I feel awful holding my hand out for it as it makes me feel like I am being mean!

It depends where you go - we go camping in Dibba and have to pass into Oman but it isn't a proper border that we go through so they just glance at the passports, no stamp or visa or anything. But when I flew into Muscat airport we had to buy a visa. UAE resident visa holders can have the GCC resident visa which I think was approx 50 dirhams - however if you are a woman not travelling with your keeper like I dared to do then you get charged the full tourist rate which is 200 dirhams.

Our bill was 1200 this month for a 2 bed apartment! We have the air con a lot during the summer because our windows are useless so if we don't have it on constantly then our apartment gets damp - but we didn't have it on any more than in the previous month yet the bill was still around 300 dirhams more, it has been steadily increasing over the past few months - and having discussed with friends it would seem that everyone's bills are larger than usual at the moment. But I heard on the news on the radio yesterday morning that DEWA would like to inform everyone that they have received a high number of complaints regarding large bills but that there has been no increase in rates, they advise residents to be careful of wasting water and electricity. So it would seem that the whole of Dubai has suddenly become very wasteful ;)

I heard it is usually around 6 but depends on each person Thanks! It would be great to never have to bother with waxing again but I guess it could end up quite expensive. The offer I saw today was AED 333 for a session so even with 6 of the vouchers it would be 2k - that's the price of quite a lot of waxing sessions! Another poster had put a thread about how much in the long run she'd saved from laser by not having to wax. Also imagine the time you save and the fact that you'd have minimal hair growth so no more in-between growing! I think its worth it, I just haven't gotten around to doing it myself :) True I guess - I can't remember how much I pay for waxing because I have other things at the same time but is it around 50 dirhams? If so then that is 600 per year so you would make the 2000 back after 3½ years. It just sounds like a lot to pay out upfront.

I think it is an unfair system - if a sponsor is happy for their maid to take on extra work then they should be able to sign a NOC letter to say that their maid is allowed to do part time work. It is very unfair for it all to be going on illegally because of sponsors getting into trouble for something they have no idea is even happening. But clearly there is some reason that the authorities do not want this to be made legal.

I may be completely wrong with this but I thought I had heard that you are only allowed to ask your tenants to leave if you are planning to sell or to move in yourself - so if you asked them to leave only to rent to someone else for a higher price then that is against regulation. But like I said I may be wrong with that, I am sure that someone else will either back it up or tell you it is wrong :)

For some reason I have got out of the habit of buying it since I moved here. I regularly send Lush gifts to friends in the UK for birthdays, I would absolutely love to receive one of their huge gift boxes, they are amazing! And my hair is definitely softer and feels in better condition. I bought it after my friend recommended it and after a few months she actually had new hair growing, I got it from Ibn Battuta and they had an offer on where if you spent over 400 dirhams then you get 100 off so I went with a friend and we both bought one to get the discount.

Our movers insisted on packing everything themselves so I didn't get away with much, I had already packed some boxes but they unpacked and repacked in their own boxes. A couple of things they removed were something in an aerosol can (can't remember what now, a hair product I think) and herbs and spices. We put all of our DVDs in one of those big cases where you put them in without boxes so they didn't look through them - not that there was anything dodgy!

Well to me that would be totally unacceptable - but like I said before that would be my personal situation because as far as I am concerned my family is his family and vice versa so there would be no way he wouldn't want to go - does he get on with your sister and family?

I would be pretty upset if it was my sister because I would class her as being his family, my husband sees my sister in almost the same way as he sees his own sister but I guess that not all husband-sister relationships would be as close. However it would depend on the reasons - if there was a cost issue for the flights or if his company are not allowing leave then they could be valid reasons. I don't think we can comment without knowing more about why he won't or can't go.
