I dont think the OP is British, therefor she wont be eligible for anything (I think LOL) The fact that the OP isn't British means she will be eligible for everything! :D I was going to say that but didn't dare ;) edited by Dilys on 04/06/2012

I'm thinking that the breakeven point would be above the level where you would be eligible for tax credit (I don't know what the level is), but I do know the cost of full time nursery for a child. If you're earning 100K you will not be entitled to any tax credits I don't think. I didn't get any tax credits/help I believe they take it away from you after earning in the region of £30-35K. Tax and national insurance will be a kicker on your salary as some have said 35-40% taken off your basic, I don't know the true figures as I've been out of the UK for a while. Having said that £100K is a BIG salary in Wales. I know, I am from North Wales! edited by cymraes on 04/06/2012 It's just gone up to 40% on annual earnings from £34,371 to £150,000 this tax year and yes if she's not British she won't be eligible for anything

Yes, just gone through the long list of banned items and guessed that would include make-up. Never thought about ebay though, thanks for that and the warning about shipping charges.

I use a Clinique tinted moisturiser, which is great during the day, even in this heat. Unfortunately I haven't had to buy any over here yet, so not sure it's available, but i do hope it is.

Please don't forget if you pay tax in the UK there's the higher band 40% on annual earnings from £34,371 to £150,000. Also anything your company may give you as part of your package such as a car, or medical insurance is also taxed to the max. Not sure about childcare though as well passed that stage. Don't want to put you off, but just think you really need to research everything before you make a decision.

Dilys The internet/tv provider is Du and I think you are restricted to who you can use. However on some of the villas they have satellite dishes so presumably are not using Du. You have to use a specific gas provider (cant remember the name at the mo) but I can't think of any other providers. Shanz It looks like we were lucky - we had a problem with the drains at the beginning and they were out the same day and sorted it. Since then we do have strange smells coming from the AC at times (looks like this is a common problem around here) but we havent reported it yet. Regards traffic - I haven't used it during peak hours but once you know where you are going (by Springs) its pretty easy. Residents do get cross about people driving on the wrong side of the road but I this is probably due to the roads only recently being finished - well nearly finished. Thanks for this. I didn't have any preference, but Du seems ok. I'd never thought about the gas, oops. I must find out where this road by Springs is !!!

We did that with one of our cats as he kept trying to destroy himself against the catflap with his lampshade and kept everyone awake with the noise. We bought a small dog coat for him and it worked a treat. Mind he did sulk for ages during and after though :)

Hi, I live in JVT and really like it round here. I am in a 1 bed townhouse and our DEWA is around 800 aed per month - although we do have AC on a lot and water the garden every night. There is a good community feel to the place and they even have a facebook community page. The main drawback IMO is that there is no communal swimming pool. The parks are due to be finished by the end of the month (I shall believe it when I see it) but it will be great when its all completed. Have to admit I don't understand how the areas work and I don't know which are the good areas or bad areas. I think it could be a case of drive around and see which part you like. Yes lack of a pool is a bit of a downer, but I will now have a look for the facebook community page. Fingers crossed for the completion of the parks. We chose our area to suit our lifestyle. Wanted somewhere quiet, away from the main entrances as we have pets. I did manage to get hold of a plan on the internet which was a good help in finding where all the areas are. Sorry one quick question. Is there any restriction on which company you can use for TV, Internet etc? edited by Dilys on 03/06/2012

Thanks Dilys for your help. Yes, we indeed like the villas and the area as well, its just a little confusing about the ditricts since the agents say that some districts are better than the other, i dunno in what way?? Also after we know about the average DEWA charges we can quickly make the decision since we really liked the townhouses. If it's any help we're in District 5 Block E away from the power lines and quite near a children's play area. edited by Dilys on 03/06/2012

Thanks for all your suggestions. I think I've managed to activate the DEWA online, eventually!!!. So that only leaves DH to go and get his own driving license Now I can go through the links to curtains and blinds, to find someone for those. Furniture to be ordered tomorrow and then we can move in (hooray):) edited by Dilys on 03/06/2012

Hi, We are moving from Abu Dhabi and also looking at jumeirah village triangle. Can anyone tell me hows the community life there and also on average how much are the DEWA charges per month since a huge garden need to be maintained. My daughter will be joining the Gems Wellington Academy in silicone Oasis and i suppose the distance will be around 30 minutes. Does anyone have their kids going there and will the travelling time be a lot during the morning and afternoon peak hours? Please help as we are quite confused at the moment! We'll be moving into our 2 bed villa later this week (hurrah), so unfortunately can't give you an idea of the DEWA charges, yet. All I an say is that DH works at Silicon Oasis and on a practice run it took us about 30 minutes. The whole area of JVT is looking ok and quite a bit of the communal areas with kids play areas seem to be coming on quite quickly. Also you don't feel as if you are living on top of your neighbours. We decided on here because of our dogs and a lot of people have said it's very friendly too edited by Dilys on 03/06/2012

Dilys - Dubai Mall & Festival Centre have a Geox shop. Occassionaly one of the shops in the Outlet Mall has them - DD has been wearing Geox since she could walk. It is the shop on the left as you walk into the front entrance, yellow & black sign. Flowerpot8273 - Chic Shoes (MCC & Festival Centre) sell Caprice & Tamaris shoes, both have shock absorbers in the heels so all their shoes are super comfy. They sell nice walking shoes. Tamaris also has a stand alone shop in Festival Centre. Thanks for that. Not that mine need replacing. I just want a new pair 'cause I can

They do have a pool on the roof, and a restaurant/bar which is licensed. They also do shuttle buses into town, so you might not have to rely on taxis. Great thanks for that. Sounds like it would do for the week.

I would be getting on to the schools this week by phone, at this time of year there is a mad scramble for places and at least if you have a few options you will know soon enough if they have places etc, or whether you will have to pursue plan B, C, D or even G! Manning of the schools entry procedures will be limited once schools finish, only for a few hours a day and in it can be frustrating not to get anywhere quickly. With regard to school fees, they vary hugely we pay 62,500 dirhams for year 9 (British Curriculum) this is about average for the better known BC schools, all fees are paid per term in advance of that term, I can't comment on the US schools. Some DH's companies pay directly to the school, ours pay half our school fees by cheque direct to the school and then we pay the difference as they are due. If you are bringing pets you should be looking into their relocation now, we brought our dog from the UK, we started the pet passport process in the May for a move at the end of July. Dubai Kennels and Cattery are very helpful, I would drop them a line or look on their website for good up to date advice. We used a UK relocation pet company for the UK side and dealt with DKC for the Dubai end. www.dkc.ae Good luck, Dubai is a great place! I can definitely recommend DKC for importing your pets. They have been more than helpful with getting ours out, working with our UK pet relocation company right from the start.

To OP,I think the most important issue you have to consider is that employment in DXB can change at the drop of a hat,as many on this forum can attest to. Not meaning to put a wrench in the works but what you have to consider is,if things don't work out for you will you be able to re patriate your animals . Cost wise for some it is more expensive than their own tickets home. Many have come to DXB with dreams of hitting it big what with tax free income etc. but for some it doesn't work out.Hence the abandoned pets left behind.I am not debating the issue with regards to cats adopted here and those brought over here.Having worked with animal welfare organisations in DXB the whole abandonement issue is just tragic. As I have mentioned before on here when we left for DXB I weighed up bringing a few of our cats,we have 10 on our acreage!!.Luckily we had family to look after them at home,so decided to leave them be in Canada. Before anyone jumps on me about them being my kids etc.I think many may have got to know me as a fierce defender and protector of animals. To fill the void left in my life by not having my furbabies with me I decided to volunteer and foster. Having had many a posting abroad I have both brought my animals from home and left them at home, when it seemed necessary. Both choices have worked for us. It is a very personal issue and can only be decided by your family, however the person who said your cat won't survive is taking through their hat LOL. All the best with your new venture. N That's one thing we have factored in, the return cost of the pets, just in case. We have put the money plus a little extra aside, and we will add to it regularly. No matter what happens our 'babies' will definitely come home with us if / when we decide to return. edited by Dilys on 15/05/2012

Mine didn't settle to life indoors very well, so we found a villa with a garden they wouldn't be able to get out of. They wont go out much through the summer, but will be able to if they wish...which I think is half the thing with them. They hate not having the choice.. That's why we're having problems finding a villa with the budget we have!! Other half is looking at JVT as the outside space is so big and most of them haven't had anything done to them. One big patch of desert!!! If you don't mind me asking, what is your budget? What size villa do you need? We need minimum 2 beds, plenty of outside space, for the dogs, max budget 90k. We've looked at Springs, Arabian Ranches, etc and they all look too small inside. Yes, the 2 bed springs and al reems are a bit small. A Palmera in the ranches might be ok, but I doubt you'd get one for less than 100k. What about the Layan and Al Waha? They are half villas but you can get them with a garden and they are definitely in budget.. You do not get your own garden with the 2 bed half villas in Layan and Waha. Only with the 3 and 4 bed full villas Thanks Roysie, I thought that was the case and we do need space for the dogs

we brought our dog and cat with us from the UK and they are MORE than fine. Our cat used to be a 'come and go' cat with a cat flap. now she is very much an outdoor cat and now comes in when our dogs allert us that she is patiently waiting by the door to be let in. The fact that we are in the Ranches might help as there are plenty of parks for her to rome in. I am amazed how they have adapted to the heat. I have never heard what your friend told you, before. Good luck with the move. Thanks for telling us this. I feel more confident about them all coming with us. Even though we can't manage the Ranches, I'm sure JVT will be just as pet friendly.

How to pets who have only known life in the UK cope with the extreme heat here ?? Much of the time they can't even walk on the pavement without burning their feet !! I'm hoping ours will become indoor cats once out there. And we did discuss it with the kennels who are arranging their import permits, who gave us all the encouragement we needed. Cats are very adaptable

Believe me we have gone through days/weeks of talking, crying and every other emotion you can think of about whether or not we brought our pets with us. We decided early on that we had to bring the dogs, we knew they would be reasonably safe with us, it was the cats who were the problem. I kept on seeing threads about missing cats, dead cats and stray cats who need a forever home. Our 3 cats are mainly outdoor cats and as we live on the edge of a forest they love to roam. Obviously once they move out there things will have to change. We even thought about leaving them with a friendly neighbour who already has two cats, asking our daughter if she wanted them or getting a tenant for the house on the proviso that they loved cats and would look after ours. Then we realised (as we had know all along) that they are part of our family and there was no way we could leave any of them behind. We are now paying more for the animals relocation and hopefully they'll all be fine once they get used to a new area.

I hope we don't see pets on planes a matter of course I agree. Much as I love my pets, I wouldn't want to inflict them on others for any length of time, especially in an enclosed space like and aircraft cabin. Anyway I'm sure they'll be happier, secure in their kennels. Hoping they'll sleep much of the journey.

We were recommended by the company who are flying our pets out, to get them on a direct flight. Not having a break is supposed to be less stressful. I would have thought that too. Just wondered if it was recommended.[/quote It was slightly more expensive, but as was explained to us a lot less stressful for the pets. They won't be taken off one plane, and then have to go through it all again just as they think it's all over and they spend less time in their sky kennels

Thanks for your input ladies. Dilys, that is what I am discovering too - probably not much in it cost-wise between disconnecting and reconnecting versus keeping the line running, but certainly more hassle to disconnect. But does that mean you will lose your tel number? Virgin has said tenants will have to use our number (which we dont want). Perhaps BT is more flexible... [b'>Yes Victoria,I'm assuming we will lose our number, but in this day of mobiles and the fact that we'll probably only be home for a couple of weeks a year until we move back permanently, that doesn't cause us a problem.[/b'> Busybee, do you mean short/holiday lets not worth it generally in your view? We have friends moving in for 9 months or so on a normal shorthold tenancy, but may do short lets via an agent after next summer. Would have to be pretty lucrative to make it worthwhile! At least we are in London where I hope demand is quite strong (people moving out for short time whilst their houses are renovated, people in between moves etc). edited by Dilys on 14/05/2012 edited by Dilys on 14/05/2012

We're with BT and have been told that it will cost more to disconnect than leave the contract for telephone and internet running. Your tenants shouldn't be able access to your emails. We're going to ask BT to just change the phone number if we get any tenants and then charge them for their calls as and when. It means we will have to give them free internet access, but it still works out much cheaper than trying to cancel the contract.

To be honest, if you've already got 2 another one won't make any difference, once the initial hissing and spitting is over. They just find their own spaces and get together whenever the mood takes them. All of ours have been male.

Why not rent a 2 bed in the Greens for 75k and use the difference to rent a car? That way you are mobile and can drop the kids at school (5 - 10 mins drive if it's in the Springs), and if you find a job, can drive to work too. It will make your life soooooo much easier. Villas are nice to have but as other posters have said, your DEWA will be thru the roof - the cost of a/c and water for a villa is double that for an apartment. I wouldn't rent a villa if I was on a budget - they are the preserve of those comfortably off and the Springs ones are really small. It is also a residential community and hard to get around without a car. It will be very cramped for a family of 4 in one of those 2 beds. The Greens is a lovely community, lots of families, LOW RISE (you could find an apartment on the first or second floor), gardens, pools, play areas and plenty of things within walking distance like coffee, supermarket etc. It is also centrally located and would take your DH about 30mins to get to work by the airport. Taxis are easy to find and you're so close to everything in Dubai. Sorry to chime in late but I would take this option over dragging your poor kids through the heat to school. HTH What's The Greens like for pets please? Absolutely fine - I had cats in my apartment (6 at one point as they had kittens, but that's another story loool!), dogs are well catered for too, as it's lovely to walk around. Cannot recommend highly enough. Great I'm on the hunt now. We've got 2 dogs and 3 cats to accommodate
