Why not rent a 2 bed in the Greens for 75k and use the difference to rent a car? That way you are mobile and can drop the kids at school (5 - 10 mins drive if it's in the Springs), and if you find a job, can drive to work too. It will make your life soooooo much easier. Villas are nice to have but as other posters have said, your DEWA will be thru the roof - the cost of a/c and water for a villa is double that for an apartment. I wouldn't rent a villa if I was on a budget - they are the preserve of those comfortably off and the Springs ones are really small. It is also a residential community and hard to get around without a car. It will be very cramped for a family of 4 in one of those 2 beds. The Greens is a lovely community, lots of families, LOW RISE (you could find an apartment on the first or second floor), gardens, pools, play areas and plenty of things within walking distance like coffee, supermarket etc. It is also centrally located and would take your DH about 30mins to get to work by the airport. Taxis are easy to find and you're so close to everything in Dubai. Sorry to chime in late but I would take this option over dragging your poor kids through the heat to school. HTH What's The Greens like for pets please?

Thanks everyone for the info! DH and I are wondering about our UK house insurance ... I hope someone can confirm that this doesn't apply to house insurance too :\: Gina we are having to cancel our current house insurance and take out a much more expensive one, as the house will mostly be unoccupied. Even though we have a neighbour who will call in daily and make sure everything is ok and they've also offered to keep the garden in shape. Please DO contact you current insurers, don't just rely on the small print.

i am just looking into car hire so this thread is most useful, thanks as ever ladies :) We are UK citizens resident here in Dubai, we hire cars in the UK on our UAE licence (swapped for a UK one 3 years ago) and have always had a good deal with Thrifty, in fact Thrifty once told us they prefer overseas driving licences as they don't have to follow up on traffic fines! edited by cymraes on 09/05/2012 Thanks yet more info to go into my Dubai folder. You ladies have been amazing on here

I'll send you details later. When you hire a car back in UK you get hammered for daily insurance costs which can double your car hire costs. I did find 2 companies who will insure expats for car hire independent of the car hire companies ie you just pay the car hire and NOT insurance from the hire companies but take out separate insurance. It is MUCH cheaper. I'll dig them out and let you have them. Thanks for this. Just another thing we hadn't factored in !!

If the above about licence is true It's absolutely true. Check with the DVLA yourself. what happens when you come back to the UK for a holiday and need to hire a car?? You use your UAE licence, obviously. It's the only legal way to do it. If you use your UK licence and are later involved in an accident in which the police discover that you're an expat, then you are at the mercy of the legal system, because you've technically been driving without a valid licence, which means that your insurance is void. Oops I never thought of that. That's ok then. Thanks for the heads up, not that we'll back for ages. edited by Dilys on 09/05/2012

Well, we live in Dubai, we have kept our house in England and we keep a car there too. The car is insured with Admiral Did you make it clear to Admiral that you are not permanently UK resident? Do you have written confirmation from them that they understand this and are still willing to insure you? If not, you have left the door wide open for them to declare your insurance void in the event of any attempted claim. It's usually a clause of UK motor insurance contracts that the insured persons are permanent residents. Check your Admiral contract, the relevant clause will probably be near the top. It's also the case that when you cease to be a permanent resident of the UK, your driving licence becomes invalid until such time as you return to live permanently in the UK. I have confirmed this with the DVLA, who say that when we get out UAE licence, technically the RTA is supposed to confiscate our UK one and return it to Swansea. [b'>If the above about licence is true, what happens when you come back to the UK for a holiday and need to hire a car??[/b'> ... edited by Dilys on 09/05/2012 Strictly speaking, the same is true in Australia. If you are granted a license in another country, you are supposed to surrender your Aus license. However, as the UAE RTA don't submit any paperwork to this effect (they essentially just sight the license and trust it is valid), there's nothing that will raise a flag with the Aus officials. I'm guessing it's similar for the UK. Hope so, 'cause we've had to sell our car before I leave here and when we come home for a holiday we just plan to hire a car for a couple of weeks.

[b'>If the above about licence is true, what happens when you come back to the UK for a holiday and need to hire a car??[/b'> Bottom line, if you haven't got rock-solid written confirmation from Admiral that it understand your expat status and is still willing to insure you, when you go back to the UK and drive your car there you are driving an uninsured car without a valid licence. If Admiral decides that it can't cover you after being made aware of your expat status - and sadly, most mainstream insurance companies won't - you'll have to go with one of the specialist insurers that covers expats. This typically costs much more than standard motor insurance, but it's the only legal way to drive a private car in the UK while you're an expat. edited by Dilys on 09/05/2012

My husband and I are making a trip to Dubai this weekend to see what we think!! I have more doggy day care places on my "places to visit" list than anything else.....heheheeheee! Our dog has to be happy too :) I really appreciate all the replies to my initial posting - all very helpful!! We're bringing out 2 dogs and 3 cats in 10 days time. My husband has looked at JVT and reckons if you can get a property away from the main roads it will be great for the animals (note they come before me :)) Also the outside space is huge, the dogs will have their own private desert !!

I've often done first interviews in hotels here in the UK, always just using the lobby or coffee shop if there was one. It made for a much more relaxed atmosphere and helped the candidates feel more at ease. Maybe I'm being naive here, but I wouldn't have a problem being interviewed in a hotel (as long as it wasn't in a room)

Yes M'am :) Mine's working at Silicon Oasis, on same salary, but we have no need to schools. Just got to find the space for 2 dogs and 3 cats, us and the family when they descend. Also he's been out of work for 12 months, me for 5 months so we've got a massive of lack of funds to throw at this. We will have to have at least one car, but if I have to take him into the office so be it.

Part time work does exist. There is also a lot of work within schools/nurseries/TA's, admin staff etc. You could even get something at your LO's school to fit in with that. As long as your expectations are not too high wrt salaries. But if you look at it as paying for your monthly shop and a bit of pocket money then it's fine ;) Your DH has accepted the job and you are all ready for your new life, come with an open mind even if you are not 100% sold on the idea. Dubai is a lovely place to live with a young family and there is so much to see and do here even on a budget. There are so many free or low cost things to do. Think of waking up to sunshine every morning and things will seem a little brighter. In a few months time you will be welcoming your first lot of visitors and showing them proudly round "your Dubai" :) The sunshine sounds just what I'm waiting for, sick of being cold here in the UK, while other half is working hard in the Dubai sunshine!!! I'm also needing to find work when I get there at the end of this month, but at least I won't have to find it around school hours. I'm hoping there will be something out there for me, PA, admin, reception, etc type of thing. If you are willing to work FT then there are lots of roles available for the above It is P/T there is less. Most employers prefer FT staff :-) It's going to have to be full time at least for the first year. Would it be cheeky of me to start applying now from here in the UK if I see anything suitable?

That's a worry. We'd kind of come to decision that we (2 girls and us) would squeeze into a 2 bed in Springs until I found employment so that we could supplement our housing budget. We've got a super king size bed.Why is everything so complicated or why can't DH's company just pay him more LOL. Tell me about it, just a little bit more would make such a difference:(

Thanks for all the advice. It looks as we'll be heading for JVT. Other half looked at a 2 bed in The Springs, said the location was lovely but didn't think we'd manage with the 2 dogs as the space looked smaller than what we have here in the UK and it's a squeeze now. No probs.... glad you have found a place where you can go. If you need any other help, then just contact me :) Thanks Roysie, a coffee would be good once I get there ;) Got it thanks edited by Dilys on 05/05/2012

Can anyone let me know if the DEWA bills are really as bad as some people say. We're seriously thinking about JVT, 2 adults and 2 dogs. Dilys can I suggest Layan... its a beautiful place to live and good for walking dogs Trouble is we have a very tight budget and we do want a villa, not something on 1 level. May I ask your budget? 90k at a push we could go slightly higher, but we will need to budget for kitchen appliances and the villas at JVC and JVT have them included. If you hear of anything I'm all ears though

Hi Sweetsugar123... Im on jvc.....in an official 4 bed townhouse over 3 floors at grand chateau....its a terrace of townhouses if you do the u turn as suggested on the last roundabout, then its the second building on your right....looks like a chateau, they are the appartments, the townhouses run parallel to them....you can also view the townhouses layout on youtube if you look up al faraa properties, le grand chateau, there is a pool and gym in the appartments which depending on your rent on a townhouse may be included or at a small supplement.....there are 2 of these townhouses coming for rental soon. Other 4 bed properties on jvc are, orchid park, mulberry mansions, le riviera which is next building down from the grand chateau.....hope this is helpful. JVT are generally large 2 bed villas but with some 3 beds coming soon we think. No amenities, but its close to springs. JVC has some amenities, convenience stores, barber, pharmacy, medical centre... Don't suppose you know if these townhouses allow pets do they?

We don't have kids, they're all grown up, so I don't have the option of Mum and toddler groups. Are the Ranches ladies meetings still on?? This sounds perfect for me.

I live in JVC, I don't drive, have a daughter and I also go to work on the Palm 5 days a week by taxi. The rents here are amazing for what you get. There are 4/5 supermarkets, laundry, doctors, dentist, pharmacy and taxi rank. Not bad considering. Taxi to MoE is only AED25. So quite good actually. I'm sure it won't be long before we get a bus service either.:) This is making JVC sound more and more promising as somewhere to rent :) I can't wait to get out there and join my hubby to look

Property market in our area in UK is pretty dire at the mo so not even worth trying to rent out./quote'> Wow, I had heard that the rental market is booming as nobody can afford to buy these days. Unfortunately not where we live. It's a lovely little old Forestry Workers place on the edge of Kielder Forest, but there are no shops or anything like that within walking distance. there are some places in Mirdif in the flight path but others not, best to go and see at different times of the day. All I can say is that I would personally prefer to live in Mirdif rather than JVC/T and that's my personal opinion, with regard to green space, I didn't see any in JVC/T. Mirdif city centre shopping is great with a Carrefour which is nicer than Mall of the Emirates branch. Good luck in finding a lovely place to live. Good thing here is if you don't like it you only have to stay a year, and believe me time flies out here. Put a call out to Mirdif ladies, there are lots on here and I am sure they can guide you on which areas within Mirdif are the nicest. Birki you're a star, I owe you one. All Mirdif ladies out there, do you have any help/advice please? And what's the difference between Mirdiff and Uptown Mirdiff? edited by Dilys on 28/04/2012

Dilys, you say that you're looking at JVT/JVC personally I've looked at these with a friend and you get a lot of space for your money, however the ones I looked at were fine empty but I would have found a problem with most of my furniture. However, there has been a lot of dissatisfaction with these as they are new and there seem to be teething problems, I live in a new villa and it's been one thing after another, I therefore would err on the side of caution on a new property - especially in an underdeveloped development. I had a quick check on Dubizzle for a villa 3+ bedrooms up to a max of 100K, there are lots of established villas in Mirdif which I personally would look at before moving to JVT/JVC, some have lovely shared pools and I know a number of people living in Mirdif who love it. It's a good location to get to most places in town and the superb Mirdif city centre is on your doorstep plus Mushrif park, although you can't walk your dogs there. Thanks for giving me some info about Mirdiff. I had looked there, just online though, and was not sure how much green space their was around the villas. I had also been told about avoiding the flight path. Something to keep the other half occupied until I get there!! I'll send him out there next.

Thanks for the info. I thought it was too good to be true. I think for our first rental we will need to be closer to other Westerners. Back to the drawing board:( I know we really should embrace life in another country however it can be hard to integrate into the local community here in the UAE, although I am sure some have. Personally I think it's a bit out on a limb. What's your budget, perhaps the lovely EW ladies can suggest somewhere? Although I do know this question is quite a hot topic at the moment and I think places on the lower end of the Western budget are very hard to find. Others will disagree with me but I find Dubai an expensive place to live especially with having to pay rent in advance, there has also been talk in the media about companies cutting housing allowance. That will be the time we make the decision to stay or to leave. Thanks Birki My hubby is out there now looking and with the budget we have (max 90/100K) it's looking like JVT or JVC to get the room we need. Grown up kids coming out regularly and pets to accommodate. The Springs looks nice, but just not enough house space and we don't need to be near schools, kids play areas etc. Any other suggestions would be good though.
