Mum2girls, I share your sentiment re mismanagement in the Elementary/Primary school. A bit selfish on my part but as it is my daughter's last year in the Elementary school I am not too concerned. Yes, the winter concert was definitely not upto par and the after school activities and swim program leave a lot to be desired. One of the reasons we chose DAA too is because we so how well behaved the older children were and that they laid emphasis on a child's overall development rather than solely academic development. I hope the OP is able to resolve this before the winter hols as I would hate to have her stress over the Christmas/New Year hols.

That is unfortunate that you seem to be having issues with the school. My daughter has been in DAA since KG1 and is now in Grade 5. We have always been happy with the school and especially the teachers. The teaching assistants have not always been the greatest though. In all honesty, one of the main reasons for my daughter continuing in DAA is because of the wonderful teachers who she genuinely adores and makes it a point to go and see all of her teachers through the years everyday! I think you may have been unlucky with both the Teacher and TA. Are they new to DAA by any chance? Making derogatory comments about a 4 year olds work is uncalled for and must be stopped immediately. I would suggest meeting with the Elementary Principal to address your concerns. If you feel like the situation has not been resolved, I would then suggest asking them to change classes. This can be done even at this stage. Re the Home Room mom, I guess that has more to do with her as a person than the school. How sad that she doesnt seem to have any manners! Don't try too hard with her, not worth the effort. If you interact with the older children you will see that they do lay emphasis on values and manners. I have had children from the Middle and High School open doors for me and greet me even when I am there just to pay the fees. There have been a couple of issues that involved my daughter and friends/classmates and it was handled wonderfully by the counsellor who went to the extent of not only resolving the conflict and sending me regular updates but enabling the girls to rebuilld their frienship and they have been inseparable for the last 2 years. Please do not think that I am making light of a clearly stressful situation. There is nothing worse that having your little one be unhappy at school... it makes you feel so helpless. Please do speak to the Principal and I am postive this will all be resolved. Good luck! edited by Divazon on 15/12/2013

I genuinely think that a lot of families will be forced to leave the UAE in the next few years. The demographic makeup of the country will change. Western expat families in particular will become far less common, and singles in shared accommodation will be very much in the ascendant. Completely agree. Groceries, rents etc. seem to be going up overnight... unfortunately pay hikes will be a long time coming. Many companies have already prepared their budgets for 2014 and I doubt anyone has budgeted for their employees rising cost of living because of an event that is set to take place 7 years from now. Landlords can keep raising the rents on their properties sitting vacant. If people haven't rented them at the initial price, good luck in finding someone to rent it at the inflated price. The influx of expatriates coming in will be here to make a quick buck and move on rather than the expatriates of the past who would bring their families and build a life here. edited by Divazon on 07/12/2013

I hope that it does increase rents and property prices, many landlords and business owners have been waiting a long time to be able to make the kinds of money that Dubai is famous for. It will also squeeze a lot of the mid-class residents out, which has become a too large sector. Winning this bid will give a dubai the opportunity to redeem itself after the bad fall a few years ago. So you want Dubai to only be for the ultra rich or the ultra poor? Uh huh becaues that's totally realistic now isn't it? I often wondered what life is like in LaLa land. And who will be the backbone and do all these middle sector jobs then? No, read properly. I said it was too large. These at mid level are not moving the property market fast enough. Tbh you area wasting my time. edited by BubblingCreek on 25/11/2013 You said 'squeeze a lot of the mid-class residents out' - so where do you expect them to go exactly? Many would have no choice but to leave. What you suggest is unrealistic in ANY city. Ah yes! Squeeze out the middle class. Then we will have a bunch of landlords with empty houses because all the renters have been 'squeezed out'. Genius!

My only worry if Dubai gets it is the ridiculous rents most of us will have to cough up. This worry aside, I think it will be great for the city. I just hope that landlords realize that salaries will not double over night to keep up with the property prices prices that will quadruple over night ha! There will be an initial jump, but after that the increase will be gradual. Salaries or property prices :)?

As a property owner who has recently sold a property, let me share my experience. Our house was bought by a 'cash buyer' who turned out to be the owner of a real estate company. He flipped the property in a matter of 2 weeks adding a 100k mark up. The house was eventually bought by an 'end user' who once the transaction and mortgage was complete realized it makes no financial sense for him to actually live in the property and is now trying to rent the property out. Unfortunately the rent will not cover his mortgage. In addition to the 4% transfer fee and his 20 year mortgage he is now bitterly regretting his decision as the add ons were much higher than expected. He also had to repaint the whole place and do minor touch ups and is completely out of pocket.I feel awful but people really need to do their homework. When you are buying a 10 year old property, what do you expect? We got in at the start and as the properties get older decided it was time to get out. Sadly, the wear and tear on the houses is more than obvious and I dont think they will be able to last another 10 years without major work/repairs. Good luck to all getting into the real estate market at this stage. Does anyone remember how the Springs was sold as a 'gated community' but few years in they decided to build a major highway through the community and the owners did not have a say? .
