Thanks for the info. Will try giving them a call. Are there any lawyers here doing "No Win, No Fee" type services? I am a real estate lawyer and have not heard of any firms offering such a service. Given the uncertainty of the legal process here it would be too big a risk for the firm to take so the risk remains with the investor. If you want to take the matter to court you will require a local lawyer and most of them work on the basis of an hourly rate.

Hi HJ Due to our earlier than expected return to the UK and the rabies regulations we also find ourselves having to find accommodation for our cat for 2 months. He is going to stay at Dubai Kennels & Cattery- where he has been when we have been on holiday and is perfectly happy. It's not ideal but the best solution we can find. Why don't you look into this? You can get a discount for cats sharing, also you get 14 days free is they stay for more than 60 days. Good luck.

Do you have the connector card? I think there is a rental car giving quite a discount. It takes about ten days to get the card if you don't have it yet. Don't know if you still have time for that. Aha- yes I do have a card. Thanks for the tip :)

and does it define "resident" ? Sure does and the final para excludes long-term expats: Ordinarily resident The relevant residence area is specified in each individual category, and is one of the following: the UK and Islands the EEA and Switzerland the EEA, Switzerland and the overseas territories the EEA, Switzerland, Turkey and the overseas territories You are 'ordinarily resident' in the relevant area if you have habitually, normally and lawfully resided in that area from choice. Temporary absences from the residence area should be ignored. If you can demonstrate that you have not been ordinarily resident in the relevant residence area only because you were, or your ‘relevant family member’ was, temporarily working outside the relevant residence area, you will be treated as though you have been ordinarily resident for the period during which this was the case.

ahhh, so we come back to the old chestnut of defining UK resident !!! lol The legislation says that they have to be resident in the UK (or EU) for 3 years prior....

surely theft is taking something illegally...if the Government allows this then it is simply a loophole... people can't be blamed for claiming something they are allowed to..and those who refuse on "principle", in my view are just cutting off their noses to spite their faces - as has been said, if you don't claim it the next person will !! lol No, theft is not "taking something illegally" it is dishonestly appropriating property belonging to another with the intention of permanently depriving the other of it. In circumstances such as those being discussed there is, of course, significant overlap with deception offences. The problem is the common perception that it is just another "loophole" to be taken advantage of.

So again please, if one ticks the box as having a UK address , what is the benefit here? If they offer more places to overseas students? Is it cheaper if you are a UK resident? Yes, it's cheaper if you are a UK resident.

No, not true. The criteria is "are you resident in the country?" and the only thing they ask in order to determine that is if you have a UK address - NOT how many days you spend living there. So, people who have homes in the UK, even if they live here, are being totally open and honest when they fill in their forms. UK address? Check. There you go... no questions asked. No lies. No theft. It's very commendable of you to not want to burden the NHS with your medical issues, and to pay for it all yourself here... but you won't get a medal for it. The UK government doesn't give a jot and no-one in the UK is going to walk up to you and give you a big pat on the back for it. It's swings and roundabouts. Some loopholes work in a person's favour, others to their detriment. I've been on the receiving end of both in my time. Agree no lies but not exactly "the whole truth and nothing but the truth". I just think, as I have said before, if more people played it straight our country would be in a better place. And us expats, with our tax free earnings, can afford to play it straight.

Oh for godsake get off your high horses. I have paid my National Insurance's worked since i was sixteen, and i and a british citizen, we still fill out a tax form every year. We live here because of my husbands job. It is not as am entering he UK illegally. MY Children were born in the UK and should still be entiled to education in the UK when the time comes to go back to UK. When i go back to UK i will be paying taxes again. and the thread is about UNI not my tax situation. Lizzy1- It was YOU who mentioned tax in your original thread so it's rather unfair of you to jump down someone else's throat for mentioning it. It seems to me you are just a grasping expat who will circumvent any rules to save her digging her manicured hands into her designer wallet to get her tax free earnings out. However you dress it up, taking advantage of a system = theft.

We've been earning a living that we couldn't earn at home, and not living off the state because we couldn't find a job suited to our capabilities in the UK, thank you. Noted. My point is that it is not always appropriate, or fair, to have one's cake and eat it. For example, I am currently paying for expensive medical treatment here that would have likely been covered by the NHS if I were at home, however, is not covered by insurance here. Seeing as I choose to live here tax free and have been earning a living that I couldn't earn at home, that's my tough luck and I have to pay it and have the assets to do so (though clearly I would prefer to keep them myself). I know of other people from this forum who have gone back home for such treatment and just find it a greedy attitude. But, as I said before, each to their own- we all have to live with our own consciences.

Each to their own, of course. My views are with Jewels IF by trying to get "home status" one would not be playing it by the book (this seems in dispute below). As an expat I imagine you have the assets to pay (if not, what have you been doing here?). It irks me when people go home to get free healthcare, education etc by "playing the game". If everyone were a bit more honest the country would be in a better state. I know that single handedly none of us can change it but we can do our bit and have a clean conscience to boot.

Hi My DD is hoping to go to Uni in the UK Next Year, now being new to this as she is the Eldest, Would she be an International Student or a UK Resident student. We have House in UK and pay taxes etc. My husband his working over here on a contract. I have heard there is loop hole for this, by getting a letter from DH company to say we live over here with him due to work purposes. Please any little advise appreciated. Am intrigued... "[you'> pay taxes etc." in the UK though you live here? Do you just mean National Insurance rather than income tax?

Welcome to the area. I would suggest: 1. Tips and Toes at JBR Plaza level or Beauty Within at The Jewels. The latter does special offers you get texted every week which are pretty good deals. 2. Beauty Within. 3. Pampered Pets- same road as the Yacht Club, a little further down in the direction of Abu Dhabi.

Has anyone got any further details on this? We need to move our cat from Dubai to the UK in September but Emirates keep hanging up on me... the usual of putting on hold and then you get disconnected. I found a really useful (alebit c. 2007) thread on this a few days ago giving all the details but cannot find it now. If anyone can point me in the right direction I would be most grateful.

Hi I know there have been several threads on this before but the information seems conflicting... has anyone left Dubai or moved house here recently and can advise as to the whole DEWA deposit return scenario and how that links in with the security deposit on our apartment? I need to figure out the exact schedule so I can ascertain when I need to move into temporary accommodation and for how long and, of course, what I need to do. MTIA

I think it might be possible in a shop on the lower ground floor of Dubai Mall. Helpfully I cannot remember what the shop is called but if you were to exit Waitrose and go left and then left at the next junction it is a few shops down on the left. Sorry I can't be more helpful

Thanks for all your replies. I work for a Scottish University and we are organising the Scottish Highland Games on 12th March between 12 - 4 at Etisalat Academy (near Mirdif). Unfortunatley, we have staff coming out from Edinburgh therefore can't rearrange the date! Miss Balamory: We have already tried him, he played at our Graduation Ceremony last year however he is not available! I will keep looking! Can anyone come? We'd love to...

I agree with the others, they are commonplace nowadays. So I would analyse whether it would really benefit you in what you are looking to achieve or whether there is something (perhaps more focussed) that might assist you further. Good luck with it all!

happened to me with an expensive (for me) silk dress where they ironed out the pleats at the shoulders so totally ruining it. they normally limit claims to c. 10 times the cost of cleaning the item. i managed to negotiate more by agreeing to accept credit for further cleaning instead of cash- needless to say i only used the credit on linens and indestructible items! good luck...

What really gets me about all this is that even though the OP was probably blocking traffic (if only for a few short seconds) they are being put through all of this uncertainty now with their drivers license being taken away and not returned till they go to the police station, in the meantime making them stressed, confused and upset about the situation yet everyday I witness SO MANY idiots on the roads here blatantly breaking the laws IN FRONT OF the police and they get away with it! Yes we all know it goes on. I just cannot fathom how blocking a bit of traffic warrants the punishment OP got compared to what others get away with. I know, I know... the police can do as they wish and we are guests in this country... bla bla bla! *like*

I don't have a problem with the whole "the police gave me a ticket" I have a problem with the OP thinking that the police should speak English and she didn't like the fact that the ticket was written in Arabic when she lives in an Arabic country. I imagine that most of us are not used to being in trouble with the police and so when something happens here I think one of the problems is that to the non-understanding ear, Arabic is hardly the most peaceful sounding of languages. The guttural tones make it sound argumentative and rude to Western ears even when that is not intended. So it can just be a shock thing rather than a westerner expecting everyone to speak English. Give the OP a break.

Did you stop for just a few seconds? Were you not blocking the traffic maybe? Just trying to understand as to why the policemen would single you out in the midst of all the chaos and traffic. It would take more than a few seconds to stop, remove luggage and leave the car. Maybe they were there for 1 or 2 minutes. Golly if only the police here always responded so promptly :) Aren't they normally cruising and looking surly?!

Nancy - I am well aware that this is an Arabic speaking country but its not just that the policeman only spoke Arabic and not English. You can speak a foreign language but at least be polite to the person and try to explain the situation to them. You don't need to grab the license and scream at them to "khalas." In any case I am not sure why I am trying to explain the situation to you further because you seem like an unsympathetic sort anyway. Aylaali- Horrible situation.... hope you get it resolved without too much further pain. I think one of the problems is that to the non-understanding ear, Arabic is hardly the most peaceful sounding of languages. The guttural tones make it sound argumentative and rude to Western ears even when that is not intended (and I am not saying your man in this situation did not intend it!). Good luck.
