Reviving this thread! Somehow, the DNRD renewed my maids visa without giving us a new contract. How do I get a contract for the OEC? And has anyone had recent experience since the online system started? I took an appointment at 8am - what time should I really be there and how long will it take? I work full time so I need to make sure I plan if it will be more than an hour long! Thanks!

We discussed the same the other day. I think the difference is that the 5000+ is taken as a non-refundable deposit and hence has been conveniently excluded from the charges. We used to pay 5000 per year, excluding the deposit which had to also be paid (although from memory was it 2000?). I will take paying 200 a year with more than 5000 deposit as it is cheaper in the longer run.

I departed from T3 after midnight in April and the e-Gate "desk" was closed. I was told the one at the Arrivals would be open 24/7 though.

I haven't read all the comments on this thread, but my opinion is that the school should enforce the following dress code: "dress as appropriately as you want your children to dress". How can parents tell their daughters not to wear mini-skirts or to tie their shirts around their waist showing their midriff if the mothers are waltzing into school that way? How can parents tell their sons to respect women and not ogle if the mothers are giving them so much to look at? Would you be ok with a father walking in to school for pickup wearing jeans dangling around his behind showing off half of his undies? I wouldn't, and it shouldn't be different to having an expectation that mothers will come to school looking decent and setting a good example for the children. I used to do school pickup for my little brother and sister in Paris, and guess what, they were quite decent. Maybe things have changed in the last 15 years, but I have passed by many schools in Paris and never have I seen anything shocking.

I was on DH visa when i started in DIFC but was told by DIFC (not my company) that it was no longer allowed, so had to change to my own visa. Pinkpea, any difference? I think DIFC charge more for Emirates ID and everything else, if so do you have to do it through them?

Thank you! lou86, I'll give them a call. They seem very reasonably priced! Yorky, I thought of the option of letting them clean other stuff but I don't have heavy curtains at home and my furniture is all leather, no upholstery... Anyone with another recommendation on a company that has a quicker turnaround time or a machine I can buy please let me know of your experience!

oh - i had an image of pouring the batter into the chip basket and it spinning...... thinking how ...... mini donuts maybe, cake; er no. it has a little cake tin type thing which you slot in - it's truly amazing. i never use the oven any more. I LOVE my air fryer:) Kelly where did you get the cake tin from? Haven't seen it anywhere. I usually use extra large muffin silicone molds. I make yummy muffins out of my usual chocolate cake recipe. And how does everyone get it really clean from the oil? I soak mine but fine the edges don't get really clean.

Hi AusJor Your son's feet might just be getting cold at night. Put some Vicks or Vaseline on the soles of his feet and let him wear socks to sleep. He should stop coughing at night. Also make sure he doesn't have anything oily before he sleeps, and cut down on dairy after 2pm (maybe give him milk late afternoon rather than before bedtime). It will reduce any chance of reflux. Now about the doctor you want to see, I didn't have a great experience with Dr Fadil. Took DD when she had a chesty cough (she'd had issues with this the year before and it was really bad with wheezing, etc). Dr. Fadil asked for an x-ray after listening to her chest for what seemed like 30sec. I objected but he made a big deal about her chest being really bad and he needs to know whether she needs to be treated at the hospital with inhalers and whatever or if he could send her home. She had the x-ray (I wasn't happy!) and it came back spotless - her chest was clear. When we went back in to see him, I spotted the prescription printed out and ready for signature with the usual meds (inhaler, etc), although he opened the x-ray on his pc and said that he hadn't seen it yet! He confirmed she was ok and went on about the medication to administer. Her usual doc listens to her chest for 5 mins and maps out which areas of her lungs are clear and which ones aren't, so he can compare when I go back to see him a few days later. Too bad he was on holiday at the time. ETA I take my kids to Dr. Syed Ahmed at City and before that to Dr. Ejaz Wasseem at Northwest Clinic (he's too far from us now). Both amazing. <em>edited by DubaiMaman on 13/09/2012</em>

I wish! Our new maid arrives in a week or 2 (through agency). They have been discussing lowering the fees since 2008, as that is when I brought my first maid and kept hoping they would lower the fees before we renewed the visa every year. AED 15,000 later and we are still expecting to pay 5,000 in a few weeks:( <em>edited by DubaiMaman on 07/07/2012</em>

According to the law it's actually 2 weeks per year, with one ticket home every two years. People usually give 1 month at the end of 2 years as they/the maid can't/won't pay for an extra ticket.

Thanks for everyone's input. I've returned it. The manager didn't find anything wrong with it and asked me whether it smelled. However he understood my concerns and was very good at customer service. For me (and the maid) the color was very off so I'm not taking any chances with 2 little ones eating it at home. The smell wasn't completely off but it wasn't totally normal either. I won't report them - I guess some might still cook it and not have a problem with it.

I just put all my questions in one post I didn't mean to turn this into a crusade against C4. I am no expert in buying meat. I was just asking for some advice on what to do if it was spoiled - whether it's a mistake on their behalf or not, it's not really appropriate to just let them off the hook is it? And I also wanted to hear of other people's opinions on that specific C4. I always buy my meat from the Exec Towers Spinneys and have never had any complaints.

Have used S26 Gold for both mine. seashell I believe Progress Gold is for the older kids (6m+)? However all doctors I have seen have reassured me that I can (and preferably would) keep mine on S26 Gold if it was enough for them. I didn't like the idea of the vanilla flavor as it would make a harder transition to cow's milk unless you want to flavor that too when the child is 1 year old. HTH

Yes DH will have to pay for the operation, and it will cost us around 7k (she's just coming out of the operation now so not sure). But the care she got at Rashid was excellent, and they were so thorough. They redid all the tests hence why she is only finishing the op now (policy) but because it is an emergency situation we will not pay for the tests. All in all it is costing us the same as if we had stayed at the Iranian, but even the maid was happy we'd moved her after she saw the level of care and skill of Rashid H. BM, apparently the price list you linked below is old prices, before the financial crisis. Since then they have stopped free procedures for expats and put up their prices for the non-free procedures. Now I just wish this "thanksgiving" didn't involve DH being at the hospital for almost 24hours and me home with 2 sick babies. I am reminded to be greatful to having a husband who usually helps with the snotty noses and a maid who takes care of my children like they are her own. Now to go sleep before I have to wake up in 1 or 2 hours.:\:

Dubai Hospital charges 1100 dhs but Rashid charges 3500-5000 dhs, and more if complicated. Too bad for us...should have called up the hospitals but its been a crazy day. I just hope she gets quality service and she is fine and healthy when all done.

Had to step out..thanks all for your replies. My husband is now at Rashid and has finished registering the maid. Thanks BM for the link - looks like it would be around AED 1100. Or I am just not reading it all correctly. Anything under 7k is welcome. Cornish, I looked into private health insurance back when we first hired her. But it was much more expensive. At the time we got her the mandatory insurance at the time of residence visa, but noone asked for a renewal and we completely forgot about it:( Now I'm kicking myself in the behind not doing the minimum.... Thanks everyone:)

I usually do a monthly shop for everything from Carrefour (except meat), and then pop into Spinneys for the fridge stuff every week. I have a storage room - a friend once toured the house and asked whether I was preparing for a tsunami (toilet rolls went up to the ceiling!). But that means I spend 2 hours at Carrefour once a month with DH (2 trolleys!), and 15 mins each week at a smaller supermarket. I buy some of my meat from the butchers, some from Waitrose, and sometimes I'll get chicken from Carrefour or Waitrose depending on what it looks like. There are cheaper options but I don't have all the time in the world to look for those options. I try to buy meat in bulk, cook it and freeze it in bags for quick cooking throughout the month. A bolognese or a stew will take only 20 minutes to prepare if the meat is already done. Your best bets for the monthly shop are Carrefour, Lulu, Union Coop in terms of price I believe. Apparently Union Coop Al Barsha has great prices and a wonderful selection of fruit/veg, but have never been there and also heard that fruit/veg doesn't last in the fridge. I've tried going to Union Coop in Safa but found that some of the things I get, like Petit Filous for my DD and other "imports," were not available. Whatever I save by going to Carrefour (money and time) is much more than what it costs me to go to Spinneys for the weekly stuff. Would love to hear what others do!

I'm sorry ladies I haven't read the other replies (at work!) but here's what I learned from my experience with DD1 who was like that...till 5am daily! I had learned my lesson by the time I had DD2 and nipped it in the bud at 4 days old! First off, babies need x amount of calories per day. If they are asleep most of the day and not drinking enough, they will need to feed very often (every hour/1.5 in my case) during the night. This means more upset stomachs because they don't finish digesting the milk before they want to feed again, and it creates havoc in their tiny tummies (digested milk, partially digested milk, with another dose of fresh milk on top of it will make them colicky). So make sure you feed your little darling as much as possible during the day, even if it means waking her from her sleep. I did this every 2 hours 15 minutes if I remember correctly. It helped that I expressed (cracked nipples) so I knew exactly how much she was getting, and she didn't drift into dreamland as quickly as she would have on the breast. Secondly, if your DD is used to being asleep all day and awake all night, then even if you get her settled, her eyes will open wide the second your put her down in her bed/cot/.. I read somewhere that you need to teach babies to sleep at night (they are used to kicking and dancing while you were asleep). So if it means carrying them for 2 hours to make sure they actually get some shut-eye, then do so. That will get them used to sleeping in the night time and be more wakeful in the day-time, and adjust their clock. Now I know people say that babies shouldn't get used to being carried etc etc..but apparently babies don't start those dependencies so early on. It worked with me. I'm sorry I can't remember when they start getting "used to" rocking/carrying etc, probably after 6 weeks. So get a bed-time routine going, give her a warm bath and she will soon be sleeping at night and more wakeful in the day-time. Third problem may be over-excitement from her bath, or from her day. Make sure you don't let her get too tired, or have too many people handling her. Also I noticed that long trips (anything more than an hour or 2 outside the house) would get her exhausted. And babies won't settle if they are over-tired. If her bath gets her excited, then move it a little earlier or even to the morning. My MIL - God bless her soul she helped me a lot - would insist on carrying DD1 from her bed whenever she opened 1 eye at 9pm. She would start playing with her and getting all excited. That was a disaster. DD1 got used to playing at 9pm daily so she woke up to play. When MIL left, I would keep DD1 in bed and keep lights low, and within a few days she learned to sleep through until her "dream feed", which was also low-key, low lights, etc. With DD2, MIL again thought that if she was unsettled, it meant she needed rocking etc. I took matters into my own hands. I took DD2 into the room, put her next to me on the bed, held her hand and turned off the lights. She was falling asleep within 15 minutes tops. And I kept her in the room with the monitor while we were in the living room. MIL wondered why I didn't bring her moses basket out - too much light and noise. I wanted to get DD used to sleeping in the quiet and the dark! Thanks goodness I had some sense to push back. And thank God MIL still loves and respects me:p Hope this helps!

They have a t-shirt printing stall in Dubai Mall, ground floor near the ice rink. They will print whatever you want on the t-shirts. They have different sizes, colors, and different fonts and color/type fonts too. By the way that is such a cute idea! I just called them up and blurted it out before my tears started gushing down my cheeks. Wouldn't have been able to keep it to myself until I saw them on holidays!

When DH got my new car, he put it in his name as he could get a cheaper rate on the car loan. However I would get a better rate on the motor insurance because I am "western" female while he is Arab. First he negotiated a really low rate with the insurance company. Then when he got the best rate he could, he told them that I would be the primary driver, gave them a copy of my driver's license and history, and they gave him an even better rate! Car and insurance are still in his name. You can always negotiate with these companies, specially when renewing or adding a car as an existing client. <em>edited by DubaiMaman on 15/11/2011</em>

I'm not sure how many classes they had to take, but I know that they took lessons back-to-back. It may have been 40 lessons. Actually one of my friends was so pressed for time because she wanted to take the lessons while her mother was here with the baby - she finished the lessons in less than a month (but she did take lots of back-to-back and all through the week).

I didn't get my licence here (changed my French into a UAE one) but here is what I know. I'm sure you will hear about how hard it is, and how some people have failed several times before getting their licence. However 2 of my friends, the only ones actually who took classes and did the tests, got their driving licences within 3 months each and did not fail any of the tests. Mind you they were completely committed to getting their licence ASAP and keeping to a tight budget. So don't get bogged down with the negative stories! Good luck!

I honestly don't mind being called m' dear or love. The only expression I hate which is a Scottish one is being called "hen" Having said that my dearly departed FIL called me that but there was a kind of slant to it which made it acceptable. He also called me "flower"!! :) That's cute! I would feel like I'm 5 years old again! I call my 6m old DD flower:) I have been called "love" in the UK which I found so weird - if it hadn't been a woman calling me that I might have taken it the wrong way at 16 years old lol

Buy him a few toys, small things that can keep him busy for a half hour at a time. A small train that he can put together, a little lego-type toy with big pieces, a coloring book and pencils - something he hasn't seen before and which he will open on the flight. A small photo album of his family/friends so he can spend some time browsing and pointing people out. Also get your iPad/iPod/iPhone and load it with lots of games. And get some of his favorite snacks and food, his little blanket and special teddy are a must.
