You should go ahead and get them! I got curtains from France for DD's room to fit her window (took us forever to find THE perfect curtains). After a few months, we moved into a house with windows from wall-to-wall. I ended up re-doing the curtains so they are just for show, sort of like thin curtains hanging on the sides of the window, and I put blackout behind them which we close in the evening. I picked out 1-tone blackout which matched the colorful curtains. They looks great:D

when you find a dummy in your bra that's probably been there all day. I once found a dummy in my purse while at work, and it stayed there for 3 days until I finally remembered to take it out at home! You know you're a mum when..you wake up and find that you've been sleeping on DD's fairy wand [url=http://smileyjungle.com'>[img'>http://smileyjungle.com/smilies/headgear83.gif[/img'>[/url'>

Petrol is cheap.. :\: Sorry that was a cheap joke! It's the same parents who allow their kids to walk around without looking after them. I was having lunch with a friend and our kids at Dubai Mall, outside. A kid, unaccompanied, walked out of the restaurants (he had to open 2 doors) and headed for the fountains. I got up and told the waiter to go after him. THREE minutes after the kid first walked out the door, the father comes out looking for his son. Really? It took him that long to figure out that his 3-4 year old was no longer sitting next to him? [url=http://smileyjungle.com'>[img'>http://smileyjungle.com/smilies/confused12.gif[/img'>[/url'>

You're welcome, hope it all works out for you. Part time would be awesome - on full time pay, of course! I wish! I've taken a few half days off lately, and have noticed I am so much more productive in the morning when I know I have to leave soon, and my days are so much more full as I spend time with my kids, have time for a social life, and get things done around the house! I so hope the company pushes forward with this!

When my staff become part time, we pay EOSB and start a new contract because it is a new job with reduced hours. Request the same. It makes sense. Thanks madolecow - so what else changes in the new contract other than the reduced hours? Is the pay simply reduced according to the reduction in hours or are allowances and benefits reduced more sharply or even scrapped all together? And how is this done with regards to the labor law?

Thanks so much Kelly for your reply. My company is quite good and ethical, but then you have some managers who are really cut-throat when it comes to the bottom-line (we're still hurting from the financial crisis). HR has been thinking of part-time for a while now, as several mothers would love to take that option. But since there is no provision in the labor law as you quite rightly pointed out, HR is not jumping into it just yet. Thanks to you, now I know that if I ever do speak up and say I am interested, I will make sure to discuss the contract and the EOSB from the start. MERCI!

Where is the hygiene of pre-toddler times?! :( ...you carry extra large anti-bacterial wet-wipes in your purse at all times! ...you often forget your phone, keys, and other essential things under the cushions where LO has carefully hid them.

Hi ladies My company may be toying with the idea of allowing part-time work. If they do, I am considering taking that option. Before I say anything, I would like to know how End of Service Benefits would be calculated. I have worked full time for 5 years. So far, I would get 1 basic salary per year employed, therefore 5 basic salaries. If I switch to part time, would my EOSB work out as 1 basic (based on full-time) multiplied by 5 and then half the basic salary per year going forward? Or would the company "win" and be able to cut costs by paying only half a basic salary for every year worked, whether full time or part time? Also, for those working part time, how does it work in terms of visa, allowances and benefits (e.g. medical insurance)? I am sponsored by my husband so it shouldn't be an issue, but what about the rest? Thanks!

I really wanted to get UGGs last year, but was turned off by the delivery cost from the US and Europe. So instead I got EMU from New Zealand which I found to be great and they delivered for free (free delivery worldwide). However, I had them sent to Europe and my mother received them for me a day or 2 before we got there, as I was running short on time. So I don't know if they would make you pay customs here at entry. But you can always "gift wrap" them so price is not included and if you are charged customs it won't be more than a few dirhams (customs is 5% of cost, and they usually estimate on the low side). http://www.natureshop.co.nz/

There's still a whole year left before the iPhone 5 comes out. But if you wait a month or so it should be out officially in the UAE, and the prices should be more reasonable. The iPhone 4 was selling for around 2000 (16GB) and 2500 (32GB) the day it came out (and still is), so you should expect the iPhone 4s to have the same price, and the iPhone 4's price will drop significantly. I'm waiting....and going nuts because my iPhone 3GS is jailbroken and I can't update to iOS 5 yet!!!

. They insist they are from those countries, until I ask where there parents are from. Usually I just shut up, but when an Arab (I am Arab) tells me and insists he is from Canada, I have to ask him "well how is it that you look Arab and speak Arabic?" - then There is a subtle difference; if they migrated to Canada themselves, they shouldnt get annoyed. but why should a child whose parents moved from Lebanon 50 years back have to say they are Lebanese when they themselves grew up in Canada I know quite a few British Asians whose parents migrated from Uganda and Kenya to the Uk Should they say they are "originally from Uganda" ? Arch, my mother's grandparents (from father's side) are from a country in Europe. He was born and bred in the Middle East, and speaks very little of that language. When asked where he is from, he always was so happy talking about his roots and how his parents migrated east (rather than east to west as most people migrate). My mother will always explain that she is Lebanese but has European roots to explain why she is so fair. You should be proud of your roots. I come from the South of Lebanon - my father was born in Africa and lived in Beirut in his adolescence, I have only visited the south on a few occasions and I don't at all share the culture with them, having been brought up in other ME countries and France. I still mention the city in the South when asked where I am from in Lebanon. That's where my roots are. That's where you will find my last name comes from. It's my roots. I still say I am Lebanese-French when asked, as France is my home, my nationality and where my family still lives. edited by DubaiMaman on 12/10/2011

I too don't understand why people are offended. I always say where my roots are from and where I grew up, without hesitation. It just allows people to understand me a little bit more and gets the conversation going. I often find that people who migrated to Canada, USA or UK (from the east, including Arab countries) are the ones to say "I am from Canada/USA/UK" and they get offended when I ask but where are you originally from. They insist they are from those countries, until I ask where there parents are from. Usually I just shut up, but when an Arab (I am Arab) tells me and insists he is from Canada, I have to ask him "well how is it that you look Arab and speak Arabic?" - then he will tell me oh my parents are from xyz. It's always an interesting story. These days, specially those living or born in Dubai, people have roots in one or two (or even more) countries, passports from maybe 2 other countries, born and living in yet another country. The family is a melting pot on its own. From both sides of my family, including first cousins, we have 11 different passports/nationalities!

My DD seems to get them when she's over excited or over exhausted actually. The exhaustion bit I can control but the excitement bit I can't :-) Do you have a bedtime routine to bring her excitement levels down? Now that you said this, I remembered that we did start reading stories before bedtime, and I keep a night light by her bed. My DD is always so hyper but this calms her down considerably. It's really hard but remember that night terrors are more frightful for the parents than for the kids. We still remember the episodes they have but they completely forget about them in the morning, unlike nightmares. Best of luck!

My DD had night terrors for probably 6 months or so at varying degrees. I stopped letting her watch anything that can be half scary, or at least skipping over the scary parts. So for the movie Tangled (one of her favoriotes), I would skip over all the parts that seemed "dark" if you know what I mean. That seems to have worked. Nowadays she watches Dora and only Dora (we're the ones who have started dreaming of boots and the backpack!), she hasn't had a night terror in a loooong time (alhamulillah!).

The best for diarrhea is a BRAT diet - Bananas, Rice, Apples (whole apples not juice) and Toast (you can spread some Labneh without oil). Water and 7-up (not diet) are good for rehydration.

iPhone 5 (or 4s) should be coming out mid October. Not sure when it will arrive in the UAE though! iPad 3 should come out in March so I would hold off Genie until then. If you get the iPad 2 now it will only be a novelty for another 6 months before it gets replaced. My moto when it comes to Apple products is: buy it within 3 months of launch date otherwise you are not getting your money's worth. Why? Because apple products do not become cheaper with time until they are replaced by a newer version...

Etisalat have called me 5 times asking me if I am interested in getting the e-life triple play package instead of the e-life double play package that i currently have. They call EVERY MONTH! And every month I explain to them that I have e-vision through the building, which I do not pay for, so no I will not add e-vision to my package and start paying for it. They keep telling me "but maam it cost you less if you get triple play, and you get xyz channels, and you save xyz dirhams with triple play" - of course only if I was actually paying for e-vision but I am not! They don't get it. First call lasted 10 minutes with my trying to explain why I am not interested. And I don't know why I even bothered explaining why the first few times! Last call went like this: Etisalat: "Hi maam this is Etisalat. We are calling..." DM (with an angry voice): "Is this for e-vision and triple play? This is the 5th time you call me and the 5th time I tell you I don't want e-vision. Why is my number still on your call list?" Etisalat: "Sorry maam I make note you don't want. Have a good day maaaaaam" Haven't heard from them during Ramadan...but that might have just been their summer holidays:(

You can't "secure" a private room but you can book a private room. If they don't have a private room available that day, you have the right to ask for the suite. I had a planned c/s and when I was recovering, they told DH that they would have to put me in the shared room until the next day when a private room became available. DH went ballistic and they quickly said "orrrrr you can stay in the suite but you would have to pay the price difference that's not covered by insurance". He negotiated and got the suite for a small difference. Just recently I heard of the same case but the new mom got upgraded to the suite for free...my DH should have put his foot down! ETA they are fantastic, and the suite was oh-so-wow! Best of luck! edited by DubaiMaman on 05/09/2011

My DD was quite a late talker. By age 22 months her peers were making themselves heard while she barely said anything. At her checkup with the paediatrician, I asked him whether I should be concerned. This is the advice he gave me: "If by age 2 she doesn't say at least 7 words clearly, then come back and see me." subject closed. Actually I told him that she already knew a few words which she used, and she even knew 3 letter questions which she used. He said not to worry and she will start talking soon enough. Now she is 31 months and she expresses herself much better, with a vast vocabulary that gets better everyday. She repeats words, says words more clearly, and tries to put words together to form commands, sentences and questions. Back then, when all the kids called their mothers mommy, mine would never call me and it was a bit heartwrenching. Now she will not stop...Mommy mommy mommy! I have to answer with "Yes Darling" (a simple "Yes" won't do) for her to tell me what she wants to say... Don't listen to people with their stories of how they child spoke full sentences at 18 months! Every child is different. I once heard that late talkers are actually very smart, geniuses even:)

Sorry to hear of the tantrums, but kids have tantrums for several reasons. Either they are over-tired (which doesn't seem to be the case), or when they don't know how to express themselves. Maybe try to change the routine so you get her ready before you get ready yourself? That way she sees that you are "also" getting ready to take her out. Or put on the TV and let her watch an educational show for 15 mintues while you are getting ready. I've notived my DD going through phases of tantrums when she is having growth spurts, and not just physical growth but mental and emotional. Your DD is probably now understanding something in the world around her a bit better but doesn't yet know how to communicate that to you. It will pass, be patient! Soon you will have an 18 month old who runs to you faster than you can blink:) edited by DubaiMaman on 28/08/2011

First time had it done during my holidays back home. It was the one that allows you to wash and tie your hair straight after. It was ok but not great. Second time around I did it in my usual salon in Dubai and it's great. I used the product that you leave in for 4 days and had to come back every day to get my hair straightened again. Right now my hair is straight and so soft. I got it done 2 months ago and have only used the hair dryer twice during that time (needed a fancy look for the night). Otherwise it is straight and straight - no curls or waves. I didn't find that it stuck to my scalp. Yes the hair is dead straight but that's the point of Keratin right? I went to Salon Lemoni in Barsha (near Lulu and Summerland appartments) - Antoinette did my hair and did a wonderful job! edited by DubaiMaman on 14/08/2011

Congrats fedup! Hope you have a safe delivery:) I have delivered in Medcare twice so you might find my list of what you need useful: http://www.expatwoman.com/forum/messages.aspx?TopicID=125666 I see below that some posters said pampers for the baby - you don't need any of that as the hospital provides pampers #1 (you pay for it on the final bill obviously, but your insurance may cover it). As for wipes, it is much better to wipe the baby's tush with wet cotton (which they provide also) as wipes can cause a rash. Good luck!

That's really wierd. I am French and go back home every year. I've flown out of CDG 3 times already with my LO and never have I been asked to sample formula, milk or solids. I've taken dry formula in little forumla containers along with baby bottles that I sterilised and pre-filled with water (3 in my hand luggage just in case) and they just asked to take a look into my bag to see what the liquid was. I explained it was for the baby, who was in my arms. I've also taken home-made food in a little tupperware and that was fine too. Then when LO stopped drinking formula and moved on to fresh milk (3rd trip), I took sealed 200ML milk cartons and they were fine with that too - maybe because it was a French brand so they knew what it was? But seriously, a mother with a baby would carry what other than real formula/food for her baby?!!??

Hi there! I gave birth 3 months ago, planned c/s (2nd baby was too big for a VBAC after an emergency c/s with my first). It was great, better than I expected, and the nurses were very friendly and helpful. The hospital was full and they wanted to put me in a shared room. DH threw a fuss about having a "planned" c/s and noway won't let his wife be in a shared room. They put us up in the royal suite for 1000 per night extra. starsouthern I am so jealous that they got the upgrade for free!! DH really tried to negotiate and thats the best he could do:p I had DD1 at Medcare too 2 years ago. The hospital staff remembered me (supposedly - or they just saw in my records that I was there before, and I did tell one that I remembered her)...they joked about seeing me again 2 years from now;) Believe me I will go back if they keep up the quality of their service. As a side note I had my own doctor who delivers at Medcare so I can't comment on the doctor or the antenatal care.

Thanks JShepherd and granola! That's the vibe I'm getting about Medcare these days too. I was there the other day and was sent from one desk to another because noone listened to my question - they just heard one word and assumed I was asking about one thing or another. Thanks a million! Now she is super busy and always in a hurry but I don't mind as she still answers all my questions, puts me at ease and I've been through it all before. good luck!
