Some time back we used a gel bait that doesn't smell and is less evasive than exterminator spray to get rid of roaches and it worked beautifully. Now I have the same ant problem as you and found the same gel product for ants online. Actually just arrived today and will update and let everyone know if it works. I know this doesn’t help you immediately but might in the future. http://www.domyownpestcontrol.com/maxforce-fc-ant-bait-gel-p-102.html

I applaud you for asking about the sterilization procedures as this is something we should all aspire to do. You can never be too careful. Asking to see the equipment is also a good idea as most will tell you anything to make a sale. Bravo!!! Dubai Municipality may now require the use of an autoclave but very few have yet to implement the use of one as they are extremely expensive. Most salons use a UV light and Barbicide (the blue liquid) which is perfectly ok for non-cutting instruments that can’t be autoclaved. Below is from a salon website that explains how they sterilize. Hopefully will give all of us an understanding and idea what to look for on the next visit to our regular salon. “We use a triple level of sterilization for all stainless steel implements. After each use, they are scrubbed with antibacterial soap, soaked in Barbicide and ran through an autoclave. Autoclaves use pressure to raise the boiling point of water to a temperature that kills bacteria, fungi, and salon-borne infections. This method is the highest level of sterilization available, and is employed in the medical field to sterilize surgical implements. Autoclaves are rarely used in the nail salon industry due to its high cost. However we do not feel a price can be put on your health and well-being and believe the additional cost is justified to ensure your safety. All implements that cannot be used in the autoclave due to its high heat are scrubbed with antibacterial soap, soaked in Barbicide and placed in a UV sterilizer. Once all implements have gone through our triple level of sterilization each set is individually sealed in an air tight pouch to ensure they stay sterile until use.”

My DH is from Kansas and has packages sent by USPS often from his family. Normally takes 6-8 days. From NY I would say maybe 5-7 days.

Wouldn’t you know it he goes out this weekend and buys the items I already purchased. When trying to return the unopened duplicate item I found out the hard way about Garden Centre’s return policy. Turns out they don’t allow returns of any kind…Only store credit if you’re lucky. I think they would have allowed a return if the item was faulty, as per the law. Nice to know...Maybe I should have made it faulty. Sad to think that way but if this is the way they want to do business two can play at that game.

Believe me it didn’t take long for them to push me to my worst and soon had an audience with the manager to no avail. All he had to say is that’s the way they do business and there is nothing he could do but give me credit that's only valid for 3 months. Even after a further embarrassing tirade he barley blinked an eye. Now I have several hundred dirham of credit to a store I have no desire of every setting foot in again. I may try the consumer credit website just to see if it does any good in case I find myself in this situation again elsewhere. But I’ve learned my lesson to ask about the return policy before I make any purchases that have the chance of being returned. It just amazes me how these businesses have such a short term view on their customer base. So worried about refunding a few hundred dirham with little thought to the several thousand they just lost on future purchases. edited by DXB Cinderella on 21/05/2012

stand it outside your gate with a note attached, saying it is FREE.or put it next to the bin, and it will disappear within an hour. My thoughts exactly...I put a broken ironing board and a rusted BBQ grill next to the bin last week. Ironing board gone in an hour...Grill took 2 days but gone as well :)

Thanks so much for this. I've been so frustrated the past few days trying this as our lease ends July 1st. You just saved me a high blood presure call to RERA.

Emirates Driving Institute, sorry for the wrong abrev. Well at least you didn't use IED...Then I might be worried :) At the moment I don't know of any instructor. However a couple of the filipina girls at the salon I use said they will soon be taking driving lessons. I'll try to ask them and get back to you if I have any luck.

Tip-Top Nails JLT is my new favorite. Been using them for several months now and love it. They use a surgical grade autoclave to sterilize their instruments. Their website is very informative on how they sterilize the tools. It's nice to know they take such precautions as I've had bad experiences myself. Not sure if it's allowed to post the website but a google search will find them quick enough.

We live in Springs 3 that has several different sized lakes but if I had to classify the size it would be medium sized to all that I've seen. It does have one fountain in the middle and we are located at the far end so I'm not sure how much affect it has on mosquitos and odor. Never really considered the fish keeping down the mosquitos as dramaqn suggested but it makes perfect sense. You may just want to spend an evening near the lake and see if you notice any odor or number of mosquitos before you make a decision. This time of year will give you a good idea of what the near worst case scenario would be.

Hello Mmmmmm, I was once in the exact predicament a couple of years ago. We moved from a non-lake view to lake view Springs villa. Although the lake view had nothing to do with our choice of villa. It was based on the price of a bigger villa at the time. But I'll do my best to answer your questions. - mosquitos due to the water? Surprisingly I haven't noticed a change in number of mosquitos as I was expecting it to be much worse. - odors due to stagnant water? Again surprisingly really haven't noticed any out of the ordinary odors. The fountains do a good job of moving water to keep odor and mosquitos down…Not to mention look pretty :) - lack of privacy? This on the other hand is something I didn't care for. I like my privacy and everyone that's using the path around the lake can look inside. There were bushes planted along our fence so we just let them grow taller. For the most part problem solved. But not having a villa directly behind you makes things feel more open and less claustrophobic. We also have a cat and eventually closed the open fence with some plant climbing fence from Ace Hardware to keep him in the garden. It is very nice being close to the lake for the ease of using the paths. Taking family walks in the evening have drastically increased since the move. If I had to choose again I would defiantly go for the lake view as the good outweigh the bad. Hope this helps.

I've had the same rant many times so I'm with you on this one. You could advertise a bentley here for 1 dirham and be offered .50 fils and told it wouldn't be sold for what you're asking. edited by DXB Cinderella on 12/04/2012

Check Home Center...I've seen pillows for your legs there. Not sure if they have a wedge specifically but I remember seeing one designed for between the legs for those who sleep on their side.

The time of day theory is new to me. Not that it’s not true, Just never heard of it. However I’ve been told by Expedia that the more hits a flight gets the higher the price gets. I’m sure most if not all online booking agents use the same tactic.

Many of the schools have some sort of camp during the summer. I've sent my 8 yr old to Dubai American Acadamy by MOE and she loved it. If I remember correctly it was 150 dirham a week.

Good that DXB Cinderella has many friends and all recommended a good spa, hairdresser and nail studio. I just wondering that she didn't mentioned all the other new beauty salons in the areas or the new management in Finesse. Anyhow - i still can't recommend Finesse as is still to expensive for their unprofessional service. edited by Gege_DXB on 06/04/2012 With all the salons in JLT it may take a year to get to them all :) I've been wondering what someone is thinking opening a salon in the same building when there is already 2-3 existing salons there already. Obviously there isn't any sort of governing body in JLT that oversees new businesses to avoid this from happening. You would think having an eclectic selection of businesses in each building would help attract new tenants. I am open to any recommendations on a hair salon as this is only a nail spa. Believe it or not I still go back to one of my first UAE salons to get my hair done in….What for it…Sharjah. Guess I know what I like and don’t mind the drive if the job is done right.

Hello Ladies...I live in Springs but I thought I'd mention a nail spa recently suggested to me by a friend in JLT when I couldn't get an appointment with the usual suspects in Springs/Meadows area. Not going to go into a review here but let’s just say I found a new favorite ;) http://www.tiptopnailsjlt.com/ Also like to add the new flyover mentioned earlier is awesome...No need for me to venture out onto SZR :) The JLT traffic can be a mess at times but it looks like there is actually some foresight into the roads being built around the area. Maybe some lessons were actually learned from the Marina/JBR area. edited by DXB Cinderella on 06/04/2012

I was hoping to find something as well. My family always had Easter egg treasure hunts when I was a kid and I'd like my 8 yr old to experience the same. Does anyone know if such an event takes place in Dubai? Worst case I can do it myself in the garden but it’s so much more fun with a bunch of kids going wild to see who can find the most prizes.

I thought this is what the website forum is there for? so hope this is not taken as advertising, i know how frustrating it can be not finding the right maintenance company. I have been using a guy called Armando, referred by a friend of a friend, I dont even know his company's name. he came to do plumbing work and AC things a few times, I always called him last minute and he is available for emergencies too. so try call Armando 0503075545 or 0509372431, he apparently does all sorts of fixing in the house and I also live in Jumeirah so that it clearly an area he covers. hope that helps I thought so as well christelkoko. However I'm new here and was quickly put in my place after a similar suggestion as yours and don't want to make the same mistake twice. Sorry Paddie if my previous post seemed vague but I just want to help out as much as I could without overstepping the boundaries. Thanks christelkoko for the information as I'm sure this will not only help Paddie but many others as well.

Hi Paddie, If you are living in an apartment building you might want to ask reception or maybe a neighbor if you're in a villa. Several companies have been listed on this site so maybe refine your search a bit. Also there are many repair companies operating in Dubai that I'm sure you can find on the Yellow Pages website. I wish I could be of more help but it's not allowed to give out detailed information as it will be construed as blatant advertising.
