afraid you'll find that expats think they are better than everyone. Unfortunetly, probably because they come here, have a different life (better) to what they live back home and it changes them. I've chosen to cut off many people I've met here just because the way they insult muslim, indians, black whatever makes me cringe and how much can I as one person defend all the other cultures.

Just reading the various threads over the past few months I find that people are so judgemental about everything...taking kids to the movies, what time other nationality kids go to bed, screaming kids in malls etc etc etc. I know most of my references have been to topics dealing with kids but those were the first that came to mind since I have three of my own. Why are we so judgemental? Of course we all have opinions on matters but to strongly condemn/dislike is just beyond me. Shows a degree of self centredness that we cant look beyond ourselves, our own cultures and just judge others different from us in a negative manner. Sad!! :) agree

promise to take note of the street. I found it by accident near Al-rigga street when I got lost avoiding traffic. It's a long street and you'll find it if you go for a drive but realistically i know thats terrible advice lol. Ok, so point noted, will note down which shop its near and the butcher shop name itself.

yes - I'm pretty sure that most supermarkets sell frozen/defrosted chicken you can't freeze. It probably took me 6 months to find a butcher. I buy fresh chicken from this butcher just so I can freeze it. OH and the skin it for me - i hate skin - yuck! :) happy days

Another opinion ;p I had him too, I think he is BRILL too, his blog is wonderful. However, I didn't see him through to the end - I changed to Dr Raj as just felt more comfortable towards the last trimester with a woman (didn't expect to feel like that, but I did) and also he was a bit of a worry wort - everything concerned him and was a 'worry' and that made so uneasy. BUT these two are purely personal feelings specific to me and not on Dr George. He's a good doc.

does it have to be satwa? i bought really amazing fabric, trendy - what you see in the malls type from Karama. Can't help you with driving instructions but I just said to the taxi driver to go to Meena Bazaar as advised by fellow EW's when I hit the search button. Lots of shops, latest trends. You can ask for 'English style' if you want to be more specific and they have it all.

paste stuff seems to be everywhere but i don't like the additives and preservatives in them. Especially as I use garlic everyday (I cook mostly Mediterranean/Italian dishes). hmm so I guess its not so bad being able to get those ready peeled garlic in those tubs, at least its fresh.

ditto - its what i do now - blend them, put them in a jar, add some olive oil to the jar and i have a nice jar of garlic paste. BUT wanted an easy way out from cleaning the blender and doing this weekly. Never mind, will stick to doing it. btw for onions, you know in c4 you can get ready chopped and frozen onions in the freezer. They are in c4 branded bags. Much better economically.

Agree. Such a stupid article. Written out of nothing. Fear surrounds men hanging around parks and play areas; Emaar to launch ‘undercover’ security patrols By Shuchita Kapur Published Wednesday, February 02, 2011 If you live in the Springs and face a problem, Security Control can be contacted on +971 4 3089555 round the clock. (FILE) Another parent complained that one cleaner had the audacity of coming up to her to ask her if he could carry her two-and-a-half year old son. “I was walking around the lake with my husband and this cleaner comes up to me and said – ‘can I carry up your child’? I was disgusted and told him to keep away,” said this parent. http://www.emirates247.com/news/parents-in-the-springs-complain-of-oglers-and-strange-men-2011-02-02-1.350446 Yeah, because your average child abuser openly asks to play with your child. Why does the guy's occupation have to be mentioned? Gee, the other day a billionaire CEO of a large local business stroked my daughter's cheek (without asking). I was not disgusted and I did not tell him to keep away, much the same as if anyone asked me to touch or speak with my child - I might even (shock horror) put myself in their shoes and think that maybe they haven't seen their own kid for 3 years, because they have been busy making sure I can live in my sanitised bubble picking up the cr%p that my children leave around. Rant over

Not sure if I agree with suggesting that you buy all the baby stuff and you are just 8 weeks. I wouldn't (and I didn't..when i moved here way back when i was pregnant too, like you a few weeks). The sales here are very good - you can get good baby things from cots to clothes in the sale. Granted, sale means nearer UK price rather then cheap. Also, what is likelihood that you'll be going back to Scotland during your 9 months? if you are sure you'll be going back, I'd hold off and do baby shopping later.

Ok, thats it then - I'll need to find and take a taster/trial course in Arabic and or Spanish. See what suits me, what I find easy. I'll get DH on board too. Then we'll just try with the little one as suggested - cartoons, tv, dvd's, music etc. wish me luck!! btw - do those Rosetta Stone Language DVD's work? anybody tried them with good results?

Gosh, seems so hard, I just hope I don't want to give up on trying just because we only speak English. It doesn't mean I can't make an effort for her right. Hmm never thought about an au-pair just for language. I'm someone who doesn't have a maid let a lone an au-pair but I see your point, its quite clever. She's a tiny baby at the moment, so have a wee while before she starts speaking but I understand what you are all saying and the sooner the better. Quite hard being in Dubai - I mean the language choices (when it comes to learning and learning very well is difficult). Say Mandarin for example - God knows how i'd get her into it. Is it too ambitious to aim for one Asian language and one EU language?

No, can't be based on me as she'll just end up with a messed up brum accent. i LOVE both French, but it comes second to my love for Spanish. Only thing though - doubt she'll be growing up with a need for either language. I'm thinking Arabic - but such a hard choice here in Dubai.

...speak? I REALLY want to teach my baby another language. Two questions for those of you who speak two languages :- 1. What second language do you speak? 2. How do you/did you teach your child/children? Final bit - your opinion - how shall I choose a language? Or rather what should I base my choice on? Thank you!

Yea I'm sure it can't be good for you, I saw the same programme as you. But I've seen so many of these products by 'big' names that I'm considering trying it. But to be honest I am doubtful as I think freckles, although a pigmentation issue might be in a different league. I've seen Clinique do one - its apparently guaranteed to take away brown spots. The other's are SKII, Shisedo, Loreal, Ponds, Dermalogica, Prescriptives. These are just the ones that I've come across in Malls. I'm sure there are lots more. All useless I should imagine. I could be wrong though.

You could always get the name from a shop or stall in the mall then just pop somewhere else to buy it. Having said that, I didn't spend a fortune ( I don't actually know what I bought though, its smells amazing, its like soaked wood pieces) and was about 40dhs for the size/weight I bought. I know in Dubai Mall at LG floor, Arabian Court there are some really helpful staff at that oud stalls. I also found the stalls in MCC really helpful. Never been to the Oud shops though, just because like you - don't really know what I want and find it easier to walk away from stalls.

its fine and dandy. especially now, they should go for sure as its DSF and the whole area is flocked with tourists. Most seem to be Russian tourists, but i was there at 10pm and can say there was a heavy mix. Lots of women too in the cafes a long Al Rigga St. No issues, or worries. yes, you're right, i do cover up all the time, but maybe i've been a little lax with my sunscreen. saw spf 100 the other day - but think spf 50 should be ok. I have weird skin, very pale, freckles, dark brown hair but I don't actually burn or tan so not very common.

Final question then - where can I buy coal suitable for matches? Thanks - big big help :) Sorry - tried and tried and tried with a lighter - doesn't work :( edited by Dxb.Fairy on 31/01/2011

*LIKE* why IS everyone so flippin miserable here ? lol Lol, don't know. Maybe it's the rude amounts of cash being earned, the constant sunshine, someone to wait on you hand and foot, the never-ending array of shops and restaurants, too much beach time, stunning desert scenery? Enough to upset anyone ...;) super like!

Asthma is one of those strange things, I had it all my life with eczema and allergies I was on Ventolin and nothing for the allergies back then, just suffered. One day I turned 16 and everything vanished. Its tough, feel sorry for your poor little chap. My eczema and mild version of Asthma returned when I fell pregnant with my little girl. From experience (re dust allergy) is that those mattress and pillow protectors really do work. They help, even if just a little, but when your small and itching like mad, even a small relief is worth it. Good luck, hope you find them. Just as a last resort, I bought my allergy mattress protector from C4. Its double, but I was just thinking if all else fails, buy a double and just tuck it around the single bed. Could work.
