I like the idea, especially if it is non-profit, because I think that conviviality is something we should preserve from "the market" - and I will join the group if I will come to Doha next summer. ------------------------ quote=neerus'>Hi, I have a few activities in mind & checking out for new ideas. I am asking for special discounts for the group at: Kids Summer Camp, Face Painting, Kids Gym Ladies Beauty/Spa/Fitness Parlours It is possible to get discounts only if enough members join. If members participate actively then can organize outdoor sports meetups, full day family fun, family parties with dance & music in some decent club/hotel. Please note: I am doing this only to have family fun, make new friends & be socially active, there is no commercial purpose :)

Eleanor it's better to call more than once on the same day I'll try to call as many times as I can, but I have to work too......looking for a school place in Doha has required a lot of energies, time and money, and it has been a frustrating experience. I would have preferred to concentrate these energies and time to my job or to my daughter or to myself or my friends, instead of doing 9 applications more complicated than if I had applied to Harvard or to the NASA, and then emails, phone calls, etc :-) there should be e better system....like, for instance, unifying the admission forms and the assessment procedures....

Hi, I have received a mail from DBS for an assesment for my son, they are opening a new branch in Alwakrah. Just incase u wanna apply Thank you very much, but as far as I understand, Al Wakrah is another town south from Doha, quite far from where we would live and work, because we would be in Education City, north-west od Doha, and live in a compound of Qatar Foundation near Sherborne School (which is full and which will never admit our daughter, not being her English mother tongue - we know it. there in also another school in Al Wakrah, GEM school, which I think it is good, but, as I said, too far :-(

dear friends, thanks for the support. I tried to call SEK but with no result, they don't answer the phone. Maybe they are too busy. May I ask you which are the new two schools which are going to open in West Bay? thank you very much. Eleonor Any way with 2 new schools opening near by in September West Bay will be well served by schools.

The admissions departments at all schools in Doha can be difficult at times (to put it mildly). I'd recommend calling them. Thank you to you all - I'll try to call them, as soon as I find the energy to do it. This morning I am pretty discouraged and I am thinking of giving it up and remain in Italy, as we are finding obstacles after obstacles in this moving project.... :-(

If it is a good choice or not depends on factors, included the age of your son and your expectations. I would suggest you to try to find out for which reasons Newton has not been considered a good option: maybe they are not the same reasons you would consider. -------------------------- We've found ourselves in a curious situation where our daughter has been offered a place in ASD and our son's grade is full. We have been looking for alternate schools and the only option we have found is Newton (the new campus). I've read on multiple threads here that Newton is not a great option, but considering the circumstances is it good enough to ride out this year and hope he gets a spot in ASD next year or should I try to find another alternative? Also, my husband has found a villa in Y Village which he really likes. Will this be a torturous commute for the kids? Thanks!

Dear all, I agree with what kiwispiers says: parents should decide what is best for their children considering the ratio between risks and benefits of taking a vaccine. Unfortunately, the most difficult thing is to get objective and scientific sound information, also because the debate pro-cons sometimes resembles more a religious debate based on "truism" than a scientific debate based on facts. Medicine is not a "science" like physiscs or chemistry, and there is a lack of information about what are the long term effects on vacination over a large population, in term of autoimmune or allergies growth and about the possible loss of immunisation in adult population. Consider also the pressure of vaccine producers towards the medical community. I suspect that some vaccines are not so useful, but have spread because of the pressure from the producers. Chicken pox is one of them. It is true that it is terrible for audults, but in this case, why not to vaccinate only the teenagers who have not had chicken pox? the same with rubella. Not a dangerous illness except for a pregnant woman (for the child), so why not to vaccinate only teenager girls? Our position as parents has been sceptical: we read a lot of papers and books pro and cons, spoke with doctors pro and cons, then we decided to do - delaying them -the vaccinations against the most serious illnesses and not to do others. An information about epatite A: do you know if have there been reported cases of Epatite A in Qatar in the last years? in Doha or outside Doha? thank you very much Eleonor Not wanting to get caught up in a vax debate, I personally have mostly vaccinated my children but not to the Qatar schedule.

We enquired Loydence about the possibility to admit our daughter, but they require the Residence Permit even fot accepting the applications and doing the assessment, so no hope if youe children are not yet resident in Qatar. >Loydence is probably the one that's most hit by the recent shuffling so might be >worth asking them if they have space.

dear Lalala and purpleviolet, may I ask you in which grade will be your children next year at SEK? I am asking because we applied too, we did the assessment (Flying to Barcelona for the assesment from Italy!!), but we have been told that our daughter is in waiting list. We asked to have the results of the school assessment and to know what is the position in waiting list, but we never had the reply, and I did not like this behaviour at all!! I think that, after having paid for the assessment, the least we deserve is a feedback. thank you!!!! Eleonor My son goes there and my daughter will go next year. Very happy with the school (only school my daughter applied to). Do you have any specific questions?

Dear we are In the same situation - about moving and with two cats. I fear that most apartments will not admit cats - maybe the situation is better in compounds. The only thing to do is to check with house renting agencies. about importing: I got some information about importing rules, they are not so complicated apart from the fact that it is not possible to find the request form on the internet - somebody has to obtain it in Qatar and send it to you. I am considering to do the importing bureaucracy with a pet relocating agency. good luck! Hello everyone! Im thinking move to Doha but im worried because i have to cats. Me and my husbund will rent an apartment but i dont know where yet. Can anyone tell me if there is especific places, apartments that accept animals. Thank you :)

Dear AJA I called both schools, and visited the websites. Both schools, like all the others, are receiving a lot of applications, due to lack of school places in all Doha, it seems. We will apply anyhow, hoping that this will give us more chances, but, as well as for the other schools, we will not have a definitive answer until September, I fear. Thanks a lot for your advices. We will arrive in Doha in August, I have a daughter aged 8. We can arrange a meeting then, especcialy if our kids will be in the same school!!!

thank you dear! you really made my day better!! :-) I hope to meet you when in Doha!!! ------------------------- Hi Eleonor Cardiff International School opened in September 2013, I believe. I have personally visited the school and liked the friendly environment. I cannot say any more about the school as we decided not to opt for it due to commuting distance. This was the only reason. My daughter is currently attending Loydence Academy and although it is early days, we are happy with it. My daughter comes home smiling everyday and looks forward to the next day of school. That says a lot about the school for me. I had heard some good reviews about it and it is only about 10 minutes drive from our home. We live in Ain Khaled and the school is in Al Aziziyah. It might be worth contacting them to see what their requirement is with regards to English.

dear AJA I did not know those schools and I have never heard a comment about them in this forum. I will contact them but I will be very happy if you - or whoever has information - could give me a review about the school. Actually, we are not going to accept any school: the well being of our daughter is as important as our job, and if we don't find a satisfactory school, we will renounce. Satisfactory for us means a place where she can find at ease, make new and welcoming fiends, and learn of course. But the main focus for next year will be friendships, welcoming environment for a non-English mother tongue, friendly and supportive teachers and learning a good English. I don't mind about competitiveness or having a splendid facility. Not for next year. She is 8 years old and she has time for competition. Her emotional wellness is more important for accepting such a big change. I will open another thread asking information about those schools. Thank you very much.

Yes, I have searched some agencies but the ones I found are more expensive than the cost of travels, as they ask from 50 to 100 euros per sheet and we have about 10 sheets of paper to attest; moreover, I had bad reports about their being reliable. :-( I'll try looking again. This case seems hopeless !! :-)) Me and my husband are on a verge of a nervous crisis as everything about our relocation is so complicated!! Moreover, we still don't know if we will have a school for September. lots of interviews and visits to the schools, lots of school who told us "don't even try, we don't accept non mother tongue", 6 applications, two already failed, the other ones silent but I have news that the schools are over-subscribed.... We are about to give up. I need a psychological support group! :-))

Thank you AJA, you confirm that it is necessary :-( the problem we have is with Qatar Embassy in Rome: they ask to bring the documents in person and they don't give the documents back in the same day. This results in two working days wasted and two travels to Rome to pay. In our case, 4 days and 4 travels to Rome, as my husband needs his documents attested now while we will have to go back to the Embassy to assess the June school report!!!!! Impossible to ask to anyone to do such a favour!! thank you so much, Eleonor

Thank you very much, I have already written, and I wrote also to all the school I applied, but I had no answer till now :-( Do you mean that UK citizens don't have to have the school reports attested by the Qatar Embassy in the UK? I can have the documents attested by the Ministry of Education without problems, because there is an office of the Ministry in every city, and also in mine, deputed to legal issues regarding schools and legalisation of documents. Oh, if I could avoid to go TWICE to Rome....!!!!! The Qatar embassy in Rome does not accept to send the documents and does not send them back, and does not give the documents back in the same day. The result is that we have to go to Rome twice!!! two travels, two working days spent!! And this in the Era of the Internet!! :-)

Thank you, but the schools where we applied did not inform us, and nothing has been written on their website. What worries me is the "attested school reports". If it means to have the school reports attested by the Education ministry in Italy and then by the Qatari Embassy in Rome, this will cost me a lot of money + two travels to Rome (400 km away from where I live). I would like to know exactly what the rules are: school reports available at the moment of the application (and how many: one year? two years?) or June 2014 school reports? this makes a huge difference for us. thanks Eleonor All schools will be aware of these rules and I have heard on other forums that they have already been implemented. Schools have current seats available but can not take pupils until September, unless they are already being schooled elsewhere in Qatar. Pupils from abroad may only begin school at the beginning of the school academic year from now on. I had heard community schools were appealing for exemptions.

Take a look here, there is one report about schools (pdf file) in English - I have not read it http://www.sec.gov.qa/En/Media/News/Pages/NewsDetails.aspx?NewsId=3462 http://www.sec.gov.qa/En/Media/News/Documents/SchoolsReport2012-2013.pdf ---------------------------- Is there a governing/regulatory body who oversee school results in Qatar (like ofstead in the UK)? So you can look up individual school performance rates? ---------------- The SEC makes the rules and regulations and does inspections but as far as I know the results aren't published, least not in English and possibly only for government schools.

Dear all, a few weeks ago this message has been forwarded to the British Expat, regarding admission to schools in Qatar. I had a look to the SEC website but I have not been able to find any official news. Some of you could please tell if there are updates and where to find official communications about these new rules? thank you very much!!! ----------------------------------------------------- Please note the following recent changes regarding acceptance to schools within Qatar: 1. The Supreme Education Council (SEC) has advised that no child coming from abroad is allowed to start school in Qatar before September 2014; this is a new rule that has just been imposed. 2. The SEC has advised that children are permitted to transfer between schools within Qatar provided the Year Groups/Curriculum remains the same. 3. The SEC has advised that Attested School Reports (in country of origin) are required for each child starting school in Qatar from September 2014. These Reports should also be stamped by the SEC in Qatar and must meet the SEC requirements for transfer from existing Curriculum and Year Groups to English Curriculum and Year Groups . NB: Clarification should be sought from the SEC as to how many year’s Reports attested they require to be e.g. two academic years etc.

I have been told that if you bring your CD and DVDs, you have to write a detailed list of contents....it takes less time to download them in a hard-disk, that is what we are doing. I don't know if they will check the content of the hard disk. If this censorship rule applies, they would also have to check also the content of any personal computer of people arriving in Doha...which would be impossible! But, if you look at advices about what to ship and what not, you will find that also books could be confiscated.... :-((

Thanks a lot for your advice....in terms of food I will try to get used to local food, it is always a good habit while travelling....but from time to time I would like to offer to friends a special Italian dinner. I am a fair good cook, I can made home made lasagne, usually in Italy we make a lot of things like home made bread, pesto, jams, tomato sauce, olives and other vegetables preserved in oil or in salted water ...we also make our own extra virgin olive oil!! I know I'll get a lot of new friends saying this.. :-) and I'll be happy to invite new friends for a dinner. British invite friends for a beer, Italians for a dinner, usually. We socialise a lot at dinner, British at the local pub. I was also wandering if Italian cuisine lessons would be appreciated in Doha!! So, Although I will appreciate that it is possible to buy a lot of Italian food at the supermarket, I'll try to bring with me some specialties of high quality. I will go an meet Carluccio as soon as I arrive, may be we will have a lot to talk about Italian food! :-) And I'll contact GAC. The only problem is that we still don't have a place at school for our daughter. 6 applications, 2 "no", and 4 non-answers till now....and time passes by...may be we will have to renounce. :-( thanks to all Eleonor

dear All I'm looking for information about a way to send our personal belongings to Doha. Any advice about shipping companies from Europe (we come from Italy)? I had a look on the website but I could not find any tip. And one question: is it allowed to bring some food? I know it is not possible to bring wine, but what about other things? I would like to bring with me - or send by shipping - some Italian specialties (of course-things that don't need to stay in a fridge), to offer some good Italian dinner to our new mates. The best post with advices on how to bring / send some food will win an Italian dinner with "risotto" !! :-)

dear Amy maybe we could talk privately about our professions and do some networking....my interests cover several fields of environmental engineering and science. I'll be in Doha in September and able to work as soon as my daughter has settled at school...let me know if you are interested. Bye, Eleonor I'm an environmental scientist and so is my good friend who has lived here for years. Also 22 degrees with AC is "colder" than 22 degrees natural room temperature because you have the "wind chill" factor of the AC and lower humidity. I would need to sleep with a duvet at 20 degrees AC, and obviously you will not be sleeping your baby with a duvet. I found 22-24 degrees AC was the sweet spot for my babies. Hi all I agree with kiwispiers. I think it is better to stay with light clothes on and sleep with a blanket (or with nothing) at a higher temperature, than needing to wear a jumper and stay in the cold with air conditioning on. It also makes sense considering the energy consumption (and related global warming) :-) It is something that I don't understand why many - if not all - public buildings set the temperature too low so that you always have to wear a jumper while entering in a shopping mall, in a cinema, in a hotel.... it is also bad for health. In summer lot of people get a cold (or worse) due to differences of temperatures between indoor and outdoor environments.

I'd try that but how would I get my own breast milk? I don't have a pump, and you might find this surprising, but I have never squeezed my boob. The thought makes me squeamish! Hi to all of you Is it possible - depending from the job of course - to work as a free lance consultant, without daily constraints (e.g. working from home sometimes)? I am an environmental engineer with a degree in chemistry and a master degree in environmental management. We will move to Doha this summer. I have been working for more that 15 years in an Oil and Gas environmental consultancy firm and I was thinking of asking for a job as a free lance consultant, where your job is to deliver a certain "product" in time regardless to your daily schedule....this would permit to organise better the family life. Thank you Eleonor

Dear Newbie we are at the same stage - let's get in touch for advices about moving. We are applying for schools now, and it not an easy process. For us, it is even more complicated for we are from Italy, and we have to get an official translation into English of every document (school reports, vaccination cards and so on) :-( Schools in Doha are private schools and so they are not committed in assuring education to every kid. The situation is very different from our home countries (at least Italy). In Italy, state schools are free for everyone and are good quality schools, and also the kids of illegal immigrants get a place in state schools, and schools institutions are BOUND to give a school to every kid, regardless the position of parents, if they can speak Italian, or if they have money to pay the refectory, or if they have serious health problems or are disabled. This is what I call an "inclusive school" and I think that it has a high educational level for our kids: no one is left behind, every kid has equal rights. This builds a strong sense of community and citizenship. It is not the case for schools in Doha, apparently. Anyhow: you will have to waste money, subscribing to many schools without no assurance that your submission will be successful. The procedure is long, lots of forms to fill, official documents to be required from school and, for ASD, even from the medical doctor. So, my advice is to start in time the application process and do not wait that your husband visit the school....good luck!! Eleonor

Thanks a lot to both of you..... sorry I did not answer promptly, but there are so many things to do before moving... the first to move will be my husband. Me and our daughter will follow a few month later, in summer, and we wanted to bring the cats (two female kittens) with us. Maybe an agency will be helpful: can you write its name or website, so I can contact them? residency: I will not have the residency permit yet when I will fly with cats, but my husband (who will be already in Doha) will, and he will be already employed. Will a letter from HIS employer and HIS residence permit be enough for Qatar Airways? And: no sanitary permit for entering with cats is required? no quarantine? thanks a lot Eleonor I used an agent in Doha to apply for my Import for both my cats, the cost was 600 rials, I then decided to apply for my friends cat and it cost nothing.... Its a very easy process, if you need help, just let me know. As per last year you need a residency to fly in with Qatar Air, I used Emirates from Dubai and the cats went as excess luggage.

Dear Jen, yes you have been very helpful, and what the school says will help me too. I'll wait for your answer in the next days. Thanks a lot. We are Italian and it Italy some vaccinations are compulsory, others are not, and anyway if parents state that they don't want some or all of the compulsory vaccinations, it is accepted, so we decided, together with our medical doctor, and after having read a lot of scientific literature pro and contrary, to do some of the compulsory vaccinations (antipolio and antitetanic) and not to do some others that we deem unnecessary in Italy. Now our daughter is 8 years old and we have to face this subject again, because some of the schools where we are applying are asking, as a normal procedure, the vaccination register, and we fear that missing vaccinations can be a problem for admission, so, before talking to the school about this subject, we wanted to be aware of what is the general attitude in Qatar about vaccination, in order to decide whether it is better to vaccinate our daughter or if it is unnecessary. I've read that in Qatar there are not particular sanitary risks. Eleonor

Hi dear all an information please, if you can help me: how is it possible, and which is the procedure, to bring our cats with us when moving to Doha? Will Qatar airways allow the transport of cats? We are aware of our national procedures: vaccinations, microchip, international passport, but I don't know if there are other procedures to be done with Qatar authorities. Thanks a lot Eleonor
