for Music Lessons ask the Music Accedemy in Katara drivers to / from schools: its'a a lottery, I have heard good and bad stories. you will have to try where to relocate: try Gharaffa area, it's in the middle, it is a quite area with no much traffic, there are lots of compounds, there are some supermarkets close by, there is a Lulu Hypermarket which is not bad and convenient for prices Sherborne: I have heard that Doha college is better but you will see. Next year you will have a better idea. My daughter is in ACS and it's fine.

it depends where you live, you would look in your area mainly there is the Music Accademy in Katara which is said to be good but with a huge waiting list otherwise take a look on advertisement on line, I found many piano teachers also ask your school teachers: usually they know someone

do you mean "take lessons" or "give lessons"? I suppose Take lessons. There are two places in Doha, One is in Rayyan and the other is in Education City. Both are said to be very good. As I am not in horse riding I cannot give you further information but you will find them. Qatari are very fond of horses and Qatar hosts competitions at international level, I have heard.

Well, for my experience the Finnish curriculum and the British one are very different. So it might be necessary that you think well about the kind of education you want for your kids I visited the Finnish school and our result is: - the facility and the labs are very good - people seem to be very nice, teachers speak a perfect English even if they are Finnish - the programme seems to be very innovative - the Finnish system is known to be a very good one - the school is in the middle of nowhere north of Doha - the admission test for my daughter was easy - too easy: she is in 4th grade now, she said that in Math she was asked for things she did in third grade in Italy (last year) - they have not been able to give us details about the programme in Math and English that they will follow for 5th grade next year - and they still don't know which kind of final diploma the kids will obtain at the end of 12th grade - the school principal told us that he considers the IB curriculum too demanding - so at the end, despite all the positive things, we decided to remain where we are (IB school for middle years) as we were afraid that the programme would have been too easy and not so intellectually challenging

Why don't you ask the math teacher of your school about the need of additional help for your daughter?

The distance from the school has a great role in the quality of your life in Doha. I would go for DBS, if Park House did not give you a positive response. Remember that next year it will be by far more easy to change school, in case you are not happy. Last year, from abroad, to find a school has been a nightmare. This year we had so many positive responses and offers....from schools that seemed completely impossible.

You can do part of the relocation by yourself but there are some documents that need to be done here in Qatar and if you are not in Doha it is virtually impossible to obtain them in another way different from hiring a pet relocation company. Also check QA policy, as some breeds of dogs are not admitted. I know it is expensive to go with a relocation company, but we tried to bring our cat by ourselves and it has requested a lot of energies only to try. At the end we left the cat in Italy with a friend. Consider to shave the dog as it is so hot here, dogs suffer a lot. Once I have seen a Siberian Husky in Doha. I would never have the courage to keep such a dog here, poor animal.

Beduins cover themselves completely with wool in the hot desert, to prevent hot reaching their body. the same concept of covering to prevent cold enter your body. At least, your body tays at 37°C and not at 50°C. Said that, covering or not much depends on which environment will you be in. But it is always a good idea to cover at least shoulders and knees and not to wear tight or revealing things. Amazing, I saw a fashion show a couple of weeks ago where students of VCU presented very provoking evening dresses. Lots of Qatari attending.

definitively come later at the middle of August, in time for having the RP for your children for the beginning of the school. Don't come here on tourist Visa: come when your husband has managed having the Family Visa ready to be converted into a RP. ask for an international driving licence before coming here, it will help you while you will be waiting for converting you driving licence into the Qatari one, and is useful if you want to rent a car in some countries around here. I did not dare to come without a school place assured for my daughter: I found it too risky. Kids cannot go to school, even if regularly enrolled, without the RP. I know kids who had to stay home for one month. There is a new school opening, the Finnish school. The Finnish school system is reckoned to be very good. it is in North Doha though, close to IKEA

dear Leslie thanks a lot for your message I might suggest you that the best way to remember your cat is to donate its things to an association that takes care of abandoned animals here in Qatar. I have a neighbour who volunteers in one of those associations. I'll email you privately and ask you if you like this idea.

Both options are possible. In case you are on the RP of your husband, he will have to sign his permission to let you work. The same with the driving licence. He will sign his permission to let you drive. I find this frustrating and humiliating, although it is just a formality, but this is the law of the country. I have seen employers (also US employers) that make the most of the fact that a spouse (generally a woman) is on the residence permit of the other one for not giving the benefits, i.e. a house allowance or travels home. So in this case at the end women are strongly discriminated. Good luck, don't be discouraged anyway.

If you enroll in a gym, they will tell you what it is admitted. There are gyms that have ladies only time. in general, a long t-shirt with short sleeves and leggings that cover the knees are admitted in gyms. outside, long leggings and nothing tight and revealing.

Aveeno products are very good and they are worth their price. I found them in the farmacy in Kalifa street, you find it on your right coming from the city centre, before the bookshop which is before the roundabout where there is Kalifa petrol station. (maybe called the burgerking roundabout, as there is a burgerking shop). Also Mustela products and Eucerin are very good, and you can find them. Seem like quite an popular brand, thanks for all the good sharing....

Again: I also know a couple who married before coming here and had previously two kids, who are here too, and they had no problems because they had kids before the marriage. for sure ask your company and be 100% sure that you can do it, but I would be optimistic, if you can have the father's permission for your child or if you can demonstrate that your child is 100% under your responsibility and that the biological father has no rights upon her.

I know some cases of divorced parents who came here with children and without the other spouse, but without another partner, and of course had to provide the permission of the other spouse for bringing the children here. For your case I have no direct experience but the best thing will be to explain the situation to the office of your employer that will have to help you to obtain the residence permit and ask them to clarify with the immigration office.

in that week most schools will close and so lots of kids will not be around. There might be some sport club that organises holiday camps, due to the fact that most parents will be at work. Where to inquire depends mostly on the area where will you stay. Anyway: things to do and see: - go to the beach - rent a kayak - visit Katara cultural village - usually they have activities for kids - visit the mangrove area near Al Khor - go to the Souq Wakif - visit Aspire park - visit the Museum of Islamic art and the park nearby - go to one of the two ice rinks (one in Villaggio shoopping mall, one in City Centre shopping mall) - visit the Sheik Faisal Museum - try also this: http://www.smartit.qa/events/aprilcamp - there is also an aquapark - check if it is open for easter. have fun!

heath card: if you mean the health card for the national service, you can re-do it on the spot at any health service. just bring the needed documents. here you find the list of the location of the health centers https://www.phcc.qa/portal_new/index/index.php?limit=AlGharafa for vaccinations: you can go to the vaccination centre I think. Ask for information at the info number of the phcc service (link above). othewise try to inquire the Al Ahli hospital. In this case, if you are not covered by an insurance you pay. the cost varies according to the type of vaccine. Be careful: it is unlikely that a vaccine can start covering you in a short time. Moreover, taking too many vaccines at one time is not recommended. The doctors will tell you.

I moved from Italy so I can't suggest companies from the UK, but if you search the forum I am sure you can find some names. About what to do: you did not say if you need to relocate all your things, included forniture, or not. We moved with our luggage + shipping via cargo of six big boxes with books, games, light home supplies, linen, towels, etc in a "fully furnished" house. I used "" because it was "basic furnished" and not "fully" , from my point of view :-) - anyway it has not been stressful: somebody went home to pick up the boxes a few days before our departure, and we said we wanted it to be delivered the week after in Doha. When in Doha, at the airport you can find local companies that help with custom and home delivery. Cost: 600 euros.

I think that medicine is not a "science" but a "praxis"....and orthodontic care is not different.... there are several theories and several pros and cons. They say that to intervene on younger kids makes the treatment quicker and easier....I agree, when we were children they used to intervene later than they do now....it is difficult to say if they do it for money, but it is likely that they do. Also with adults...

Code of conduct depend much on where you are. I have seen girls in their shorts or in bikini on private beaches and inside compounds, considered a sort of "western environment". Holding hands is not a problem, I have seen local couples doing it, kissing on cheeks for greeting should not be a problem in restricted environment, but maybe I would not do it in a public square or in a shopping mall. I sometimes go for lunch at the university bar with a male colleague just because we work together and we have to discuss about our work, nobody asked us anything. Sometimes you will meet qatari men who will not shake hands with you when introduced, as a sign of respect. Sometimes they will do as they know that western women do. Just wait to see what they do.

what happened to us: daughter born in Jan 2006 In Italy, admission go with the SOLAR year, so kids born in 2006 start primary school at 6 in september, but some - those born from september to december, are still 5 when they start. For kids born from Jan to April parents can choose if to enroll them when they are still 5 or wait another year. we have chosen to enroll our daughter in advance, so she started 1st grade in Italy together with kids born in 2005. When she came here, in sept 2014, she finished 3rd grade in Italy. The school in Doha wanted to let her join 3rd grade, because she is born in 2006, but we talked to the school comparing the school programmes in Math and Language for the Italian school and for the Doha school, so we agreed that 3rd grade was too backward for her and so she has been admitted in 4th grade, which is still a bit backward for math :-) but is ok. She is together with kids born in 2005. So our school has been flexible in her case and we made a decision based on the school programmes.

I would talk to the school principal about the school programmes for the various disciplines, and in particular math and language, in order to understand if you son will have some gap and if the difficulties will be to hard to overcome. I did this last year while I moved from Italy, because I needed to decide in which grade my daughter had to be enrolled, to a slight difference in the Italian System with respect the American one on at which age to start school.

the cost depends from which kind of braces, they are not all the same. Anyway here my daughter will spend 16,000 QR, for a treatment that is supposed to last one year, which is almost double than the price in Italy. 50% will be reimbursed by our insurance, so at the end the cost will be about the same.

The normal case is that your husband will come to Doha first and then will ask for a visa for the rest of the family. In this case he will see the house and he can check what is missing. We - for example - are in a furnished house but it was provided with very basic furniture and kitchenware. So my husband checked at his arrival, and just 2 weeks before I left we decided to ship the missing little house-ware and to buy the rest here at IKEA (e.g. some furniture but also some heavy or fragile things like wine glasses or mugs). Here you can find everything (almost: we could not find an Italian "caffettiera", even if you can find italian coffee brands) so it is your choice to decide what to bring and what to leave. Consider that here the voltage is 220V, like in Europe. So if you don't want to use transformers, you will have to buy here the electric appliances.

I did not know that there is a Sidra School and a Sidra Compound. What did they tell you about this? We are in Education City Compound and Sidra Hospital is very close to where we live - Al Rayyan area. Usually life for family is not bad here. you may find a lot of things to do with kids and after school activities. But: - schools don't provide after school activities, usually. So working mothers have nannies but they usually don't drive. - during summer families escape and it is not so easy to keep the kids busy, also because you have to stay inside: it is too hot outside. Hey, I am looking for some information for family life in Doha. I will be moving to Doha with my husband and two children. I have a position with Sidra. Is there anyone living in the Sidra compounds with their families? Is the Sidra school a good school? Any contact with a family who is already there (preferably with someone who works with Sidra), would be greatly appreciated. ;)

Which ones in the book interests you? the ones regarding the road from Nakhal to Nizwa via Wadi Bani Awf, and then the surrounding of Nizwa for the following days. the book I have is the Explorer oman off-road, the "maps" are essentially satellites pictures where they highlighted the road. descriptions of the route are fair but not fantastic, I think. When we go mountaineering and trekking in Europe we usually find much more detailed maps for off-road tracks. Maybe this is the best we can find for Oman and we will manage with what we have! :-)

Please make sure you check the weather up the mountains and get one of the offroad books (3 publishers available) for Oman and read the advice in there first. Yes, we have the Oman Off road book, but even there maps are not detailed as I expected. We will check the weather, we are aware of the difficulties and we will rent a proper car. Actually I was for not trying it but the pictures I saw are spectacular and so e are very tempted.

Thank you dear. A neighbour told me that she could not find the maps neither at Jarir or Virgin Megastore. I'll have a look anyway. We will go by plane and rent a car. we will check at the airport if we can't find a map before. Mountains: Yes, we would like to go to Jabel Sham, north west of Muscat, and cross from Barka to Nizwa on the mountain challenging road. Is there a check point at the beginning of the road after Nahal? We just went to Oman for 8 days in December; its a beautiful country. We drove from Doha to Muscat and I happened to find maps of Muscat at the border office while we waited for our visas. If u are referring to the Jebel Akhdar mountains then the police at the check point before the ascent stop and give u instructions as well as provide a detailed map. Have a good trip!

We attested the last 2 years school report in our home country, then brought them to SEC. I would not dare to attest only one. The problem is that you never know who you find at the SEC office and which rule he/she will apply. The whole problem has been very painful, we had to go so SEC at least 6 times before we could complete the process, and I know of worse (but also better) stories. Thanks Eleanor I was not sure so now getting the reports for the last 2 years attested.

I have read that reports for the last 2 years are required and the most recent one has to be attested. I have also read that the report from Nursery (for a 4 year old) don't need to be attested. Thank you for helping me out! My child is not accepting breast milk and i am worried because my pediatrician warned me about cow milk because it is high in fat and recommended an infant formula because it's the most similar to breast milk. But I don't know which formula to give him... what do you recommend? HELP!! From your message you seem very worried and I understand it. I agree that you need the consultation of a good pediatrician of lactation consultant who can reassure you about the needs of your child and listen to you. Can you explain us what do you mean by "my child is not accepting breastmilk", and what does he eat normally? I also might recommend a book that is very helpful in preventing problems related to food and in stopping the anxiety of many mothers: http://www.amazon.co.uk/My-Child-Wont-Eat-mealtimes/dp/1780660057 any of you know if there are lactation consultants in Doha (e.g. La Leache League or similar)? there should be. good luck! Hi dpyn22, actually the 2 answers you received are correct. At 1 yr there is no need of special milk if the diet is balanced. It is true that companies try out strategies for selling special milk even if it is not necessary. You can check the IBFAN website (www.ibfan.org) to get information about unfair advertisement about baby food, included milk. (IBFAN = International Baby Food Action Network). If you feel the need of stopping breast-feeding you can do it passing directly to normal cow full fat milk. But if you still want to give a very good quality milk to your child, the best choice is still breast milk! :-) First of all, because it contains your anti-bodies, and this will protect him/her for a longer time. If it is not too difficult for you, why not to try to preserve at least an evening breast feeding before going to bed? It will be also a good moment for cuddling.... :-)) I myself went on breastfeeding until my DD turned 23 month old, and the last year was very easy because it was complementary and not so demanding. A pleasure more than a need for both of us. And tender moments spent together in our intimacy, to be remembered forever! Good luck!!! :-)

Hi, I am interested too as my daughter practised figure skating on wheels for 4 years and she does not feel like to change into ice figure skating. But my searches did not bring any result. The only chance could be to try to recruit a number of family interested, then to contact a sport club or a school and see if they they are interested in recruiting a coach and start a club. Or advertise for a coach first and, after we find one, organise a club or similar. But this requires time and patience. let me know what you think and please get in touch if you find any coach / club. Have a nice day, Eleonor Hello everybody, I was wondering if anybody can give me any information as to where roller skating for kids is taught in doha. Thanks.

JillMV is right. We live in a Qatar Foundation villa in the QF compound, and despite the fact that QF is considered a good employer, the "furnished" house was "furnished" very basically and we had to buy a lot of stuff, included furniture, sheets, towels, kitchen tools, pans, etc. Anyway, unless you have good reasons for bringing these things with you (from where?) you might appreciate to know that here you can find all you need. Also, there are a lot of expats who leave Doha and try to sell all the things that they cannot bring back, so you really can find all you need at a reasonable price. Consider that yes, all goods are imported, but there is no VAT. I find many things more convenient than in Italy. I don't know how prices are compared to the US.

you can bring your cat but be prepared quite in advance for all documents, microchip, vaccines etc. In advance means now, because it takes time before you can get the documents done. E.g. in Italy they release the "passport" for cats only after 20 days after the anti-rabbic vaccine, and the passport is necessary for beginning any other bureaucracy. Also, spend some money for a pet relocating agency in Qatar as they will provide you with the necessary documents that you cannot download. Check this forum as you will find valuable information about how to do. Good luck!

Hi Ladies, II can't find a school that has a waiting room or activity club that could keep my daughter until I come and pick her up. Tx Unfortunately, I don't know any school that finishes late. Moreover, I know it is quite difficult to have a place in a school - any school - for small kids. I would opt for the best school you can get + a driver and a nanny. Taxi companies do this service - you can share it with other families eventually - we do - and a nanny will allow you not to quit the job.

dear Fakan, good luck for your move! I came from Italy and we decided to ship extra luggage, because it was more easy and also less expensive (from Italy, at least). We prepared 5 cardboard boxes, the shipping company went home to take them one week - some days prior our departure. When we arrived in Doha, our bags were at the airport and we hired a local company for custom clearance and bringing them home. I found it more easy than to handle lot of luggage at the airport, but we decided to do so as we are three, included a young kid, who could not help much and who had a lot of stuff (games, books, clothing..). Also, how much stuff you want to bring depends on if you leave a home where you want to come back or not. Here you can find all you need except your favourite books, I must say. Some people said that books are checked at arrival, we had normal books (novels, essays, school books, our professional stuff) but no one checked the content. It might happen anyway.
