And yes, there is a lot of poverty in romania but there are a lot of rich people too. It is very hard to find a maid in romania for some reason, so we ended up bringing in filipinos. Amazingly sad considering the amount of romanians working as maids abroad but it's true. edited by Eli1979 on 22/10/2012

I am Romanian and i can confirm there are many filipino maids in romania. They are paid as much or more than here and the law allows them to work part time in their days off. Provided she will indeed end up working as a maid and not something else, than trust me she would be better off than dubai as she will have rights over there. As for the op , i am sorry for your situation and i do believe you should ask her to pay you back if she wants to leave. If you need help with anything , like translating that paper or whatever, let me know.

Bought it about 3 1/2 weeks ago in the Garden souk. Were advised to plant it in full sunlight, water once a day. Did as we were told, used menure and fertilizer, etc. It's SO dying now though and we don't know how to rescue it if it's not too late. Planted it in the grass but made a circle (1 m ) without grass around it. Is it too much sun??? If the leaves are falling it might have suffered a transplant shock. It is normal and most of the big plants/trees will lose all their leaves when planting. Just continue watering but stop fertilizing for now, especially manure as it is not for the plants in the summer. It should only be used in the winter. You should hopefully start seeing new leaves emerging soon. Hope that helps.

I just did this for my mother. It took one hour. They normally don't ask for this kind of proof so you could try without it. Although i did have my birth cert to prove the relationship, they never asked to see it. Please ask your husband to bring his labour contract and a copy or the original labour card. They did ask for this. Also, go to the main immigration office on sh zayed, near wtc , as they are more easy going. DH could not do the visa in the jebel ali one because they wanted the rental contract attested by ejari!!! He tried in the other one and they did not ask for it. Good luck! edited by Eli1979 on 21/10/2012

Thank you so much for your suggestions. We don't have kids living with us (all grown and moved out :( ) . She has already cleaned the entire house from top to bottom, as well as the backyard, windows and everything else. She is really a gem! I really like the suggestion for trying out new recipes. I'll find some for things that can be made ahead of time and frozen. Also the suggestion for washing the glasses, serving bowls etc. that haven't been used for awile. Thanks again. This really is a great forum! may I ask how did you find her? :)

Just tell her you will bring her over but the first two months she will not get paid. It happens all the time and she will still be more than happy to come. That's what we agreen on . I will pay the tkt , she will pay the agency fees. She was even willing to pay for her tkt that's how bad she wants to come..fingers crossed she will be worth the trouble as all this is going to take more than a month...

Al Shorouk Labour Supply will do the whole thing including one way tkt and medical in the Phillipines for 5700. I think that's a good deal..now ..did anyone deal with them recently ? Are they reliable?

I also do not like paying a lower salary because as soon as they come over here and meet other maids it will be the end of it and they will want to change employer or start giving problems. I saw this happening with 2 of my neighbors' maids :) You will let them out? no no no :)

4 k is without the ticket . They charge 8000 with the ticket included if the girl has been found by them. A return tkt from manila will cost abt 4000 aed so no discount for not doing any work really .. Yes, but the agency has to charge this fee, they are obliged to sort out any mess caused by the maid......if she fails medical etc, plus paperwork between here and Ph, and a lot more than you would imagine. They are putting themselves on the line for someone who has not been recruited by their own sister agency in Manila. Why don't you just hire direct from the agency, and salaries are lower too, but expectations from the maids are less. Thanks everyone for the advice. I saw some threads on some other forums where people actually paid 2500 or 3000 only for the paperwork , so I thought that was the case, but it does not look like that at all. I did not know there is so much work and responsibility involved? Anyway bringing someone through an agency is not for me as I would at least want to have a recommendation or something from someone here that I know..I would not even consider hiring someone I have never met but the circumstances just created this situation and I wanted to give a chance to this girl that has been trying to come over for ages without luck. But, if this will cost me so much than I would rather pass and just try my luck again with someone that is already here. I also do not like paying a lower salary because as soon as they come over here and meet other maids it will be the end of it and they will want to change employer or start giving problems. I had the same experience with the ladies i found on the classifieds here! I actually liked one that looked perfect at the interview..so educated and nice.. She even had a first aid certificate. She moved over to my house and since i told her that she can take some time off after lunch , she basically spent 3 afternoons sleeping in her room from 1 to 5, until i told her she has to go. She was getting 2000 as a starting salary too! :\:

Iyet they won't allow their own people to leave the country unless someone has forked over more than 1000 US $ for them! Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't that money go towards some national fund set up in the Phillipines for their benefit? Honestly i have no idea but i really doubt it as i have never heard about it!

I called Ethiopian Embassy yesterday for maid visa question, and as it stands, UAE has been banned from employing maids from there, so they won't be able to come out here anyways. I, too, had someone I was keen on from there but can do nothing about it. To Eli1979: A few years ago, taking on my first maid, I also found a maid who used to work in Dubai, then her contract finished and went back to Phil. She seemed nice and was desperate for a job. Anyways after many months and lots of money (like you, to an agency, to get her out), I brought her back to Dubai. It was not worth the trouble! Maybe mine just had a bad attitude, I don't know, but she gave me grief that entire year. I could not afford to let her go, because we had invested so much money in getting her here, DH was not impressed. So my words of advice, be cautious and make sure she is worth every dirham, because the last thing you need is someone not appreciative of the effort, time and financial commitment you have made. Good luck x Oh, didn't know that. Maid I was referring to was from Ethiopia, anyway. Different countries different rules I guess. All the best. Yes, TD , that's exactly what I am afraid of! She is my neighbor/friend's maid sister in law who is a very decent woman but this ofc does not mean she will be the same! Quite risky , although we did agree that if it does not work out I will deduct the agency fees from her and let her find another job before the 60 days of the entry permit finish. This way I will only lose the tkt money , but i am really having second thoughts now..

Yes, Phillipino maids need to go through an agency, even if you have found one yourself. I learned this the hard way when a maid we found over there was not allowed to board her flight. We lost a lot of money! Ironically, they say they do this to prevent human trafficking, yet they won't allow their own people to leave the country unless someone has forked over more than 1000 US $ for them! Ditto! I was typing the same!

Eli, why would you want to use an agency if you already know the maid personally? The purpose of going to an agency is for the mere reason that you don't have the personal contacts of the maid and so they give that to you at a price. I know a friend who found a maid through an acquaintance and got the maid to send her the required documents via email and processed the visa herself without involving an agency. Please think about this option before you part with your money. Unfortunately, the rules have changed and to be sure your maid will be allowed to leave the Philippines, you need to go through this training and have a contract written up by an agency. We used an agency (don't know the name as my DH did the work!) but the woman's name and number are Grachielli - 04-447-5393. Just called this one too.. they want 4000 too.. I am afraid it is just too expensive to bring her over as there is always a risk things will not work out..Can't believe this agencies though.. more that 1000 USD just to stamp some papers ..disgraceful!!

It has to be done through an agency..stupid, I know..but that's the only safe way to bring her over , apparently

What about doing this as a tourist visa? Not sure how possible this is but there is a number I have of a travel agency that does these. Give me a mo and I will try to find it if you interested I used Al Lujain a few years ago and they were great. I have recommended them on EW and I know a few other posters used them too. Al Lujain Recruitment Services 201B, Air India Bldg., Al Maktoum Road, Deira, Dubai, UAE Tel No. : 04- 228 2000 Think the charge is around Dh4000 but don't quote me. HTH Thank you for that .. I have just called them and they said 4500 dirhams.. anyway i could find an agency that does is for 3 k??? edited by TurkishDervish on 15/10/2012 I was recommended this by another poster yesterday and some of the maids in my compound have travelled this way too, BUT I have done some research and it turns up the risk that she will not get passed immigration in Manila is quite high... If this happens I will just lose the 3000 dirhams as I doubt I will get any of the ticket money back... I just want to give up and just hire someone that is already here but this lady is desperate to come and at least she is highly recommended...

All you need is the maid's passport and the sister's passport. We did it through Kasri Travel and Tour in Satwa, near West Zone supermarket. The telephone number is 04-344-3665. They did everything and even arranged for her to fly over. My maid's daughter has a job but they haven't done her visa yet so I don't know if she will have to fly out or not. If she does, she can either go to Muscat or Kish Island. Both are really easy, they fly in, get a stamp and fly out again, total on the ground time two hours or so. ETA: Not the actual passport, of course ... a copy! edited by drownedinthenile on 14/10/2012 great!! thank you sooo much .. now, since I will have to give the sister in law the money to pay for this may I also ask how much will this cost aprox? :) edited to add- just called the agency and the cost is 2850 with the tkt included...I also just found out my neighbour's maid used the same agency to bring her sister over recently ..I will give them a try.. thanks again edited by Eli1979 on 14/10/2012

Your friend's maid can invite family members (I think the sister in law would qualify) on a tourist visa. Once here, you can convert to a work visa. It is by far the quickest and easiest way but the maid has to do the inviting. We just brought my maid's daughter over this way. The other way takes a month from the time you hand the employment visa to the agency. Thank you so much for that.. can you please tell me where exactly the sister in law has to go and apply for the invite and what documents will she require? We really need her to be here asap.. also , on a tourist visa, she will have to go out of the country before converting her visa on the employment one, isn't it? where can she fly to?

I would like to bring my friends maid sister in law from the Philippines and don't know how should I do this...I was told i could use an agency to bring her on a visit visa which will cost 6000 AED with the tkt cost included. She could be here in 3 weeks. Did anyone bring their maid this way before? The alternative way with employment visa looks very expensive and long as I would have to go through a recruitment agency and the maid will have to do training before being able to travel. If anyone could please shed some light into all this as it looks so complicated .. TIA

Starsouthern, that is very strange. It looks like they don't have any clue either as DH has Been in the rental committee 2 weeks ago and was told something totally different. is it not possible to place him in a British school but a year later? Did anyone do this before? I understand i can choose a school that has a different cutoff date , but that's not always possible or convenient as driving to the other side of the city can be quite challenging . I am just thinking about doing a 2 hour school trip everyday with a newborn , no maid or any other help. There has to be another way.

@Eli1979: Didn't you dig out your garden and move it with you? :D Lol, yes i did... My plants are still in pots waiting to be planted since last feb:) For grass i think the best place to buy good quality bermuda is hydroturf. They are located on umm suqeim road too. I will be using fake grass this time as it is much much better with kids and looks great all the time! For the labour price, i will be receiving a quotation from my gardener on sat, and will let you guys know . My e-mail add is [email protected] . I am thinking to go for the interlock and irrigation sometimes at the beginning of next week. I really need to sort it out now. It's been a sand pit since feb, but we were not really sure about wanting to stay in this house. :) edited by Eli1979 on 10/10/2012

Eli, you sound as if you could set up in business as a consultant garden specialist:) Excellent advice and leads! We spent far too much on our garden and it really was not worth it. We rushed into it and have areas of gravel instead of having more paving. It's very hard to keep gravel looking clean as every leaf has to be picked up by hand.... lol... I actually fell in that trap too and spent way too much money in changing the garden layout way to many times in our previous home. :) I was lucky to find one guy that did garden maintenance and small landscaping jobs for me and he guided me to all those places so now I know all their secrets :) This time, I have planned the landscaping meticulously and took months to decide on what to do as it is a huge corner plot and it would cost us a fortune to do it with a landscaper or redo it if it did not turned out right.

Eli, please give more details to the irrigation place in barsha. Where is seashells nursery? When coming from arabian ranches/emirates road direction on umm suqeim road, turn left like going to LULU and then first left again. on that street if you go straight you will find seashells but if you turn first left again, at the end of the street on your right , you will find these 3 small shops that sell al kinds of garden stuff. I am not good with directions at all so if you did not understand , please ask , i will try to explain better :)

In my opinion all the landscapers are overpriced because they double the price of the materials . The labor charges are pretty good. Try getting quotations for the labor only and tell them you will supply all the materials for them. I can guide you where to buy everything you need for the actual price that the landscapers are paying. How many square meters of interlock paving do you need and in which color? Do you need an irrigation system or not? for the pavers there are various companies in al quouz and the prices are as follows: 21 AED /Sq m for the rectangular gray and red pavers 28 aed /sq m for the yellow and other colors You can buy these from Consent ( http://www.consentblock.com/ ) Juma al Majid or Hussein Modmd block factory (opposite consent). They are all in al quouz and if you need exact location let me know. 65 aed/sq m for sandstone, granites pavers, etc - you can find these in Stone gallery also in al quouz. For irrigation equipment, there is a small shop in al Barsha , behind Seashells nursery. They sell pumps, drippers, times, everything you need. That is the place where the landscapers are buying their supplies. You can also buy this in satwa but they are more expensive. For plants, gravel and sweet soil (red sand) you can go to the plant market in Warsan or to Wahat al Sahraa Nurseries in Kawannej, Again , if you need directions let me know. :) I am just about to start landscaping my garden next week and I am going to visit all these places to buy the stuff. if you want to join me , you are welcome. Let me know if you have more questions.

For which age group is that? Ds is 26 month and have been told tgey do have spaces still. He is 21 month old. What nursery does your son go to? I was actually talking about Willow. I had an appointment to visit them today and I have been told they have spaces for my son which is 2years and 3 months old. After reading your post abt no spaces available I have called them this morning to double check before going there and again they have confirmed availability of spaces. After spending one hour doing the tour and all they have told me they only have a waiting list for his age! grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.. I really liked the nursery but classes are too full and seemed a little bit crowded to me. I have decided to enroll my son in Children's oasis as it was the only one that ticked all the boxes for me. My second choice would have been Kid's Island that had the most amazing caring and capable people. I was only put off that due to the outdoor space and their fees were actually the highest out of all. Children's oasis also offers afternoon classes which may be a better option for me and meals are included. They also have 2 teachers and one assistant per 12 - 14 children as opposed to only one teacher plus assistants for 15-16 kids as it was the case for all the other nurseries.. Maybe CO will still have space for your LO age. Try calling them. hope that helps

reposting here too as i really need a quick answer.. doing school aplications next week.. DS was born in July 2010 so he should be starting FS1 next September..however, comparing to where both DS and I come from this is way too soon. From my understanding he would be in year one at the age of 5. I am born in July too and I did not go to school until I was 7 ! My husband on the other hand was in grade one at the age of 6 and a half. If we decide to leave Dubai I would want my son to be at the same age as his school mates in our home countries. If we follow the British curriculum and enroll him in FS1 next year , he might end up back home in year 2 at the age of 6 with some of his mates aged as old as 8 !! I also do not like that he will always be the youngest in his class and possibly struggle to keep up with the older kids. Is there any way I can hold him back and enroll him a British curriculum school a year later than supposed too? Do I need approval from KHDA or how does this work exactly? will the schools accept my application ? Why dont you just enroll him in an international school or american school? They start Grade 1 the year they are 6 years old and turning 7. I think in the end it will be the best solution... Which are the best international and american schools?

My worry is not so much about dubai but for when we will go back home. There will be nobody in his class even close to his age. I care more about this part because it is likely that most of his academic life will be spent there and not in dubai or the uk. I would preffer the bc as it is similar to the european ones and easier to convert? For us it is very difficult to accept that kids here have to be in grade 1 as much as 2 years earlier than back home. For this reason we do not see it as holding him back but simply following our country's guidlines.

I think your best bet would to be to ask the schools where you are thinking of enrolling him - it does seem it is disadvantageous for many children to be the youngest in their class and that they fare much better in the end by being the eldest. I've no idea as my daughter and I are April born. My husband is September born and was always the youngest in his year. He did fine academically but is emotionally immature still and he's nearly 60, though that might not be because of the school system ;) lol for that :)

I also do not like that he will always be the youngest in his class and possibly struggle to keep up with the older kids. Is there any way I can hold him back and enroll him a British curriculum school a year later than supposed too? Do I need approval from KHDA or how does this work exactly? will the schools accept my application like this?

After 2 years ,2 horrible landlords and total lack of facilities we have finally had enough of The Villa. We would like to move in a more established community and we have a budget of 200 k .We need a minimum of 3 bedrooms with a decent size garden, preferably independent. I have checked dubizzle and so far I am considering saheel and savannah in the ranches..Is 200 k realistic for those houses or not really? What else can you suggest ?[/quot# What about DSO? I heard the don't rent there anymore?

I really, really don't know what to do regarding this situation. We moved into a villa in The Villa in July. We knew before the previous tenant moved out that the pool had a leak - they've tried to patch it 3 times already. The LL lives in Kuwait and he has given power of attorney to someone else there. As yet we still don't have the original signed tenancy agreement back and after them getting several quotes for the pool - they still haven't started work on it! The agent is beyond useless and says he just doesn't want to deal with it anymore - er what do we pay the agency fees for then? We cannot get hold of the guy who has power of attorney, his phone has been switched off for nearly a week now and he doesn't reply to emails. I called RERA and they really didn't seem to want to do anything apart from telling us to file a case in court - which we really don't have the funds to do. I am so sick and tired of agents and LL's shirking their responsibilities. I feel you pain!! We have moved into a Cordoba in February and as soon after that we realized we had a water pressure and ac problem. It is now September and I am still here with my 2 year old in the study downstairs as both the living room and kit ac's are down for the million time. The landlord is a real estate company in Dubai and they are just useless monkeys. The compressor in the living room broke down but has a 5 year warranty on it from York. Their landlord's incompetent maintenance person made a mess with the wires and York kind of refused to grant the warranty. Now, the landlord is asking us to pay for the broken compressor as we have called jim will fix it ONCE as we needed a professional opinion on the situation. They are blaming them for losing the warranty. I am at the end of my patience, pregnant and frustrated. I would move but the rents have become so high that we could not afford any villa here anymore. I was told the Cordobas are renting now for 200 K and I really cannot understand why???? We had MICE IN THE HOUSE and it took 3 months and 3 pest control companies to get rid of THEM. For 3 months i woke up every morning to see mice poop all over my house, including my kitchen counter and my cutlery drawer!!!! and We still have RATS outside as the garbage is being collected so randomly and we are surrounded by construction and workers that do not clean up their leftovers. i do apologize for the rant but I seriously feel like crying right now. :( By the way, before this we were in a mazaya and left because of the landlord wanting to increase the rent or "move in" !

Just an update. I have received a call from the main office of the nursery , inquiring about the reasons I had to withdraw my son. It was actually a very refreshing talk and the lady seem to understand and take very seriously my concerns. I feel a million times better to know that somebody does care and they even offered me a refund of the remaining term fees as I am still decided to find a more appropriate nursery for my son. So, I was promised that they are going to do something about the security and other issues asap. Let's wait and see what happens but this person seemed really professional and determined to repair the damage. So maybe this nursery still has a chance to become a proper one and prove themselves to be worthy of our children. Time will show..

The worse thing is that they actually have a big waiting list !! The location is perfect and being the only nursery in the area makes it a very popular choice for everyone. My son's teacher was changed 10 days ago and we still don't know if it's a temporary or definitive change. We are talking about 2 year olds here.. DS has finally started to bond with his teacher and could not believe today when they told me the old teacher might actually come back and replace this teacher again! I want him to finish the term there as it's a big financial loss for us but his teacher is the only good thing in that nursery. If the old one comes back I will definitely pull him out before the end of the term.
