First question is, where are they getting married? There are key things to remember: 1. Marriage requirement of Ireland to be acknowledged as legal 2. Marriage requirement of the Philippines to be acknowledged as legal 3. Marriage requirement of the country where you are holding the marriage All documentation requirements list would be available via each individual's embassy along with the requirements to be completed before marriage. After the marriage, each individual would then need to report their marriage to their respective countries is that's a requirement so that their status could be changed from single to married. Ministry of Foreign Affairs comes to play as a requirement of the country where you are getting married (if such country is not your original country) plus the authentication of your marriage in that country. It's really a bit complicated. I tried to make it as simple as possible but if you have questions, let me know. I fully understand how you and your friend must be feeling now. You could really get lost unless the concept becomes clear.

I almost forgot how it felt to live with AED500 after taking out accommodation, food and transportation. It's possible, and will teach you a lot of lesson about money. If you get by that, along with perseverance, hard work, kindness, team spirit and a lot of professionalism, you'll go a very, very long way. You'll learn a lot of skills and will probably understand how the other 50% of the UAE population lives. When you finally made it to the top, you would understand how majority of your staff lives because you've been there. You will potentially become a great leader because your life learning will help you with your understanding so long as you don't forget the lessons.

We will definitely see clearer picture right after summer, when business is dry, cash flow is an issue to most companies and school term comes to a close. That might break the silence. Some banks are laying off people by the hundreds. Some are preparing now by cutting costs to prepare for the summer. The residue of high seasons are still around. That won't be there after summer.

The funny thing is, staff are getting terminated by the hundreds, sales are very slow and stores are cramming to get business as much as they can but this time, it's just SILENCE. The seven year cycle. It's bad. How bad it could get is still a question.

My then new neighbour came to our villa asking for the madam. I kept on saying "yes, please". It took us three Q&A repetition before she finally got it or had to forcefully swallow the fact of us living in an exactly identical villa side by side. I thought I saw a register of disgust in her face. Oh well, my husband and I had a good laugh.

I have a Volvo XC60 with built-in booster seat. That sealed the deal for me having a 5year old, 3year old and almost 2year old. I bought it because of the built-in booster seat and so happy with it. Just perfect for what I need. We have a bigger secondary car that my husband drives but for school runs, ahhh this one's a breeze. Easy peasy and I could play their favourite DVD to watch while waiting in the car. Makes mums life easy. And yes, very good service!

This September, my 5y finishes at 2.15, 3y at 12.30 and 2y at 1:00. So, I have to pick the 3y from the school, take him with me and go straight to the nursery in another location 15mins away, pick up the 1y, drop them at home, eat a bit of lunch. Go again and pick up my 5y from the same school as the 3y , go back home to drop him. This would take 3hrs minimum. I then need to go back to the office and work extended hours to cover my time away from it. It's tough but as a working mum, that's the only time I get to spend with them. Early morning at breakfast as a family all together and during pick-ups. My quality time with them. My husband does the drop off in the morning.

I love buying her small gifts then giving her a card with money on it. It's not a bonus amount as we give her that every year when she goes on holiday (it is more useful for her that way) a so between 500-1000 depending on my mood. I'm quite leaning on the 1000 at the moment as Christmas gift.

I felt offended hearing her rant. My mum left when I was in primary so that we could continue our studies in a decent school and have food in the table. Because she chose to sacrifice, our generation and hopefully that of the next one are in much better situation. A mother's sacrifice for the future betterment of the children. What is greater than that?

Just wanted to barge in here on this thread and say - it's cultural, ladies :) Helpers working here spend their whole year cleaning up after us so that they can go home and make their families happy with some silly gifts. Remember their world/horizon is different than yours - hence the fact that they work for you! I wonder what maids go home and say about their employers. For me it would probably be "She spend 100 dirhams on two organic chicken breasts, you could buy 10 chickens for that, insane!" So true! And probably in her perspective it is sillier than paying for excess baggage!

I remember when I used to bring my husband cup of tea, 5 days after delivery of our first child, 21 steps to go downstairs, 21 steps back upstairs, trying so hard to be the super woman while he sits in his as* watching TV. Went back to work full time, bled for 6 months. Ignored my body's need to rest. On my second pregnancy, I made it very clear that this time, no f****ng tea from me. He wants one, he gets it himself. On the third pregnancy all rules are solid as stone. Balance is everything. My husband prepares the snack/lunch box of the children, drop them in the morning. I pick them up in the afternoon, prepares their dinner for them. We both work full time. He's happy to help but yes, you have to S P E L L it loud and clear to be understood. I think it's most important to set your grounds early so nobody keeps any ill feelings.

Organics Foods & Cafe: 25% discount this week (until tomorrow) if you pay cash, 20% if you pay by credit/debit card. It's only for their 10 years anniversary, normally it's 20% every 3rd Fri/Sat. Our system in the family is to buy all meat organic. We shop every 3rd Friday/Saturday at OFC, weekly at Carrefour for all other things. We spend just the same when we used to shop at Spinneys. We buy our bread at Park & Shop. They use Hovis flour. Still the best around. We buy 5 whole frozen chicken every 3rd week of the month, price range between AED 60-90 depending on weight. I think it's about AED 57 a kilo. Fresh ones are much much more expensive. edited by farthestpoint on 20/03/2015 <em>edited by farthestpoint on 20/03/2015</em>

Hi Mums, we have been offered a place for our daughter at JPS for Sept 2015, she is an August baby so will be youngest in the year and the 7.30 start is a worry too. Very stressed as I know if I keep her in nursery for FS1 she will miss out as FS 2 in most schools is so hard to get. Any thoughts or experiences of JPS would be welcome. Thanks. Hello Mummycurve1, my son currently attends FS1 at JPS but he is one of the oldest (November born). He partly did FS1 in the nursery as they moved him as soon as he turned 3. When he started at JPS, my worry was actually the opposite of yours, which is, maybe he will be bored. My fear was confirmed when during the first few weeks, he comes home and complains that school is boring. It was further confirmed by his teacher during the first parent-teacher meeting that he is in the advance side and that she will arrange for him to have more interaction with older kids. On the other hand, since the school is more structured than the nursery environment, the kids adapt to this new system. Kids adapt. I would want to believe that if the assessment of your child didn't go well, JPS will surely not offer her a place. I had seen children during the assessment of my son, who had been outright send out and you know that they will not be offered a place. They could "probably" somehow know when the child is ready. However, you as a mum, would definitely know what is best for your child. Please follow what your mummy instinct is telling you. All the best x

Where can I find a good choice of home coffee machines? Seen filter and espresso machines (the George Clooney ones) but would like to see more. I don't have a car on a regular basis so trawling different areas is a bit difficult anni55, There are many, many excellent brands available in the UAE for espresso machines (Saeco, Nespresso, Caffitaly, Jura, Schaerer, Lavazza, Segafredo Zanetti, etc.) and the same goes with the availability of wide range of coffee (coffee beans, pre-ground, capsules). From experience, the initial cost of capsule machine is lower but the coffee capsules itself could vary from AED 1.5 - 3.5 per capsule which could pile up in the long run if you drink a lot in a day. For the fully automatic (with grinder, bean to cup), the initial cost is higher but you could produce up to 142 cups of coffee in a 1kg bag (+/- 7g / cup) which is about AED 0.36 (for the lower end coffee bean of AED 52 a kilo) to AED 1.21 (higher end, 5* quality coffee of AED 172 a kilo) cost per cup. For the traditional type, the cost of the machine is in between but you would need to purchase a pre-ground / freshly ground coffee (unless you have your own grinder) and basically you would need to really store the coffee properly or consume it quick enough or the aroma and overall quality of the coffee is affected if stored for a long time. The servicing of equipment is important as well specially when purchasing a fully automatic machine. If you are looking for filter machines, it is normally available in supermarkets. I personally have a Saeco Aulika at home. I love the aroma released by the freshly ground coffee in the morning. The crema of the coffee is fantastic as well. You may google Saeco Aulika Dubai. These are the known coffee equipment suppliers / distributors in the UAE: Philips http://www.mea.philips.com/c-m-ho/saeco-espresso Moka General Trading http://moka-group.com/store/espressomachine/index.html Nespresso http://www.nespresso.com/ae/en/ Jura https://uae.jura.com/en/homeproducts/machines (also available at Tanagra if I am not mistaken) Schaerer http://www.schaerer.com/adressen-n46-sD.html It really depends on what you are looking for. I hope that helps. Edited for correction: I meant Tavola, not Tanagra <em>edited by farthestpoint on 19/11/2014</em>

I used to work in oil and gas industry and my then company is very strict with HSE. It is mandatory for us to reverse park for safety reasons (I.e. vacating the premises very quickly). I always find it easier to reverse park in very tight spaces. Obviously, this doesn't apply to angled spaces that actually go with the flow of traffic.

Hi Fairy, from my last pregnancy, I was only informed about the gender at my anomaly scan (detailed scan at around 20+ weeks). However, with my first 2 children, I was immediately advised by my Doctor during a routine check-up at around 14 weeks and reconfirmed at 20+ weeks during my detailed scan by another Doctor. I was wondering why my OB Gyne wouldn't tell me the gender and I had presumed and actually suspected at that time it's a girl (my first two were boys and it showed all so wide and clear) and she's being cautious. In the detailed scan, the Doctor who conducted the scan confirmed it's a girl.

Could it possibly be that the technician is not allowed to disclose the gender as only the Doctor is allowed to do that? I remember having the same conversation with my friend and she was told that technicians are not allowed to even make a comment on scan and that the Doctor is the one who will explain the result. I've had 3 pregnancies and I've always been told the child's gender (not Garhoud Hospital though) -- always by my Doctor or the Doctor who conducted my detailed scan.

I had once hired a maid who stole money from us, abused our landline with international calls and outright lied about it even with evidence. It went on for a wee while because my husband and I will talk about it, i.e. missing AED 200 in his wallet and would retract to say he probably had spent it and forgot about it. At that time we were also not checking our calls as the bill is not received (The provider later found out that our PO box recorded in their system is wrong). I just keep on paying the bill in my online banking (I linked it) blindly. After few months, I requested for online bill and saw all the international calls. We confronted her (without showing the bill as yet) about this and all the missing money. She outright, straight faced lied about it. We sent her home in the next available flight. After that, when we hired new maid/maids (we have 2), we explained to them that stealing is not tolerated in our house at all -- not even for a dirham. We clearly tell them that the moment we lose something in our own home, they go straight home without a warning. We tell them about our experience with our previous maid and the course of action we've done. So far they've understood this and had taken the responsibility that even if we are not at home and they have to attend with maintenance people, they need to make sure they are on the guard.

Been 14 weeks now and still no sign of passport for our daughter. No answer to phone calls, no answer to emails, what's going on? Anybody with recent update about the situation? Is it just us? This is terrible, is the for a newborn or a renewal? Polly, this is for a newborn. We finally received the passport on the 21st of August. We paid around AED 1,800 in fines (for late visa and Emirates ID). It's a long story but we didn't face this problem with our two previous children's passport application with which we received their passports two weeks after application submission. Basically, somebody admitted that they do not know the process and our case is something they did not have any experience of. It was very stressful and we're glad that it is finally over. During such time, our daughter needed to be checked due to some heart murmur (which was communicated with them) and we were just too worried that we do not have any travel document in place in case we needed to fly due to medical emergency. Sometimes life's a ***** but thankfully, her heart murmur seems to be correcting itself as time goes by. <em>edited by farthestpoint on 16/09/2014</em>

To add - Cigna Global Health is the company, and the amount for adding myself and the children would be paid via payroll for us Just to add - from the impression I have been given this is one of the best medical insurance companies out there, even better than BUPA - so yes do what you can to get yourself and the children added on to the package, often works out cheaper too if it is part of a group scheme! We're with Cigna and it's very, very good. <em>edited by farthestpoint on 21/08/2014</em>

I did it last July 16th at Al Manara Municipality: -Bring your original DL, Emirates ID, passport + visa page copy -Go and pay for the eye test where the result copy will be handed over to you, there's a sign to follow the location of the eye test -Get a number for RTA -Renewal will be processed after payment and the photo for the DL is taken automatically from your Emirates ID photo in the database -Wait for the new license The whole process took me 45 mins but there were 20 people ahead of me. It's so easy and quite efficient.

I would suggest to breastfeed even for just a short period of time. I had expressed through pump with all my 3 children as I really did have difficulty latching and no matter how hard I tried, it just stressed both my child and I during those times. I am still pumping but with less milk now (my daughter is 3+ months) as it is quite a challenge to manage it while working full time. Always had combined powdered milk and breast milk. It is important that you transfer some of your immunity to your child through your breast milk no matter how short of a time it is. As my two other children goes to nursery, they bring home a lot of virus and thankfully, my youngest had been resilient so far. I wish you all the best in your decision. Goodluck with your decision.

Ember, so sorry for your loss. Reading your post puts a big lump in my throat. When I was pregnant with my first child, I had heavy bleeding (fist-sized blood) at 7 weeks. That was one of the saddest moment of my life. I remember very well not flushing the toilet for my husband to see it. I then lie down in bed and cried. It can't be anything but our baby. My husband didn't lose hope. We went straight to the hospital and my thoughts were already that of the "cleaning process". They put me in a scan, the thought of actually having the truth in my face is unbearable -- only to see active movements in the monitor. A result that i didn't even think possible. We now have 3 kids, all throughout my pregnancy I had occurrences of bleeding although way milder than the first one. I just want to give you a big hug to say I somehow know how it feels. Be strong, the right time will come and when it does, it will be one of the sweetest you'll have in your life.

When I first travelled with my 6months old, I brought the following for an 8 hr flight: Hand Carry for the plane: Disposable bib Disposable plastic bags (tiny) Disposable changer (or big plastic, white garbage bag, or changing pad you get which are sold in pharmacy -- the same ones they use in hospital to avoid blood going in your bed after giving birth) 5 Nappies Nappy cream Wipes Dummy Bottled baby food Baby spoon Bottles (I wasn't breastfeeding at that time) Milk (Full small tin) Pyjama (To make them feel the most comfortable so they will sleep nicely) Extra clothes Clothes for getting off the plane (depending on weather difference) Toy Baby Bag (Lighter for easier access when in the airport / you will have access to the basics even if you split with DH) 5 Nappies Nappy cream Wipes 2 Milk Bottles 2 Container with exact milk portion 1 Disposable nappy changer Disposable bib Baby food Spoon Toy Dummy It's most helpful to make them feel as comfortable as possible so that they will be calm and rested, hence, easier flight. I've travelled when my child's 6 months, 9 months, 1 1/2 year, with two children -- 1 year old & 3 year old (the toughest of all). My next travel would be with 3 kids, all 4 year old and less! Can't wait! What I learned from all those travel is that you cannot rely on places to have what you need (I.e. a changing table or tiny spoon) and even if airline staff are able to give you your request, it usually takes time -- and time is essential when having a child who could scream the place down. Usually when they start getting agitated, it takes a lot of time and comforting to put the situation back to normal. It helps a lot to anticipate what your child/children need as it keeps the situation nice and calm. Enjoy your flight.

I really think I am going to give up buying these books. Yet another outlet dictating what you have to order to be able to use the voucher'AL HALABI' Mall of the Emirates. What is the point of stating "You and your guest are invited to enjoy one complimentary MAIN COURSE when a MAIN COURSE of equal or greater value is purchased. It should read "you can choose from 4 options on the whole menu even if you don't like it." Come on Entertainer please inform us where outlets are only allowing us limited choices. I remember reading a thread about this a while back where Entertainer advised that they were having issues with Paris Group which runs several outlets such as Al Halabi, Rich, etc. Here, I found the thread: http://www.expatwoman.com/forum/topic218958-more-entertainer-restrictions.aspx I experienced the same with Rich at MOE. Never used the voucher there as the selection is very limited.

We first used Maclaren Volo during our travel with our then 9 month old boy. Lightweight (4kg), very practical and easy. We then had another boy and switched to Maclaren Twin Triumph (10kg), bought it mainly because we're travelling (and I was pregnant that time too) with our then 3 year old and 1 year old. We initially thought of getting the Techno Twin but found it bulkier and heavier which we didn't see the point as we were thinking of being able to navigate 2 young, very active kids + 3 full luggages and 2 hand carry bags! We've travelled many times with it and are fully satisfied (including US Disneyland, lots of walking, folding, transporting). It has weathered the cold of Scotland, heat of Dubai and Florida, rainy days of New York, and humidity of Asia. We're still using both. Now I just tell the kids to hop in and out of it. My husband is 6'1" tall and never had a problem navigating it. The downside? My boys like to pick on each other while sitting together, but that's another story! ;)

I always had this issue. I delivered my 3rd child few days back and just got over engorgement, cracked nipples and am now pumping as this is always where it leads me to. So long as the good stuff reaches my baby, am happy with that. What works for me is applying nipple cream (am using medela at the moment, had used palmers as well, both works) every feeding (or in my case, pumping). I do not dry the area, I apply the cream generously so that it will cover the entire area. I just actually had a thought there that if milk has natural healing properties as stated below, the system I do of applying it after every pump makes sense because the remaining milk gets trapped in the area when cream is applied on top of it. You may also express by hand as you won't need much if you are to try the below suggestion by colours.

I always have change from AED 25k a month and we are/have as follows 3 adults (one is a maid so all associated costs along with that), 1 child with nursery paid up for a year, 1 on the way, 2 dogs, 4 bed villa in Umm Suquiem, 2 cars, healthcare for all of us (dogs included) fully fed and watered, holidays when we want them and NO DEBT I do not get ANY allowances but my medical is covered by my work and I pay for hubby, maid and kids and dog Wow! How do you manage this? A 4-bed villa in umm suquiem must cost around 180k per year, plus DEWA etc alone would be 15k per month? Add nursery, maid's salary plus visa costs, groceries, running 2 cars (assuming both fully paid and just petrol/ servicing/ insurance costs), groceries, 1 holiday per year and this has got to be over 25k pm... ETA: this is a genuine question, not trying to be funny or saying i don't believe you! would love to know so I can see where I'm going wrong :) edited by KH on 01/04/2014 Me too, I would be very much interested to know how this is done. We live at Umm Suquiem 2 as well and our villa never increased in several years we've been staying here, always had been at 200K. I also track down by solid receipts. Therefore, it would be much of an interest to know how this is possible.

You just go to the same restaurant over and over again because you can't be bothered checking out the new, trendy location anymore....and because the comfort of the staff knowing you makes you feel closest to home that is so far away. My soul have probably gone old!
