this may be related to a scam i heard about this week - a colleague newly arrived in dubai was asked to pay her rent cheque to the AGENT rather than the landlord in 1 cheque and to pay a 'holding deposit' in advance. the place seemed like a steal so she gave the holding deposit but managed to contact the landlord before paying the rent. turns out the rent is 30k more than the agent asked but payable in 4 cheques so the agent is effectively running a ponzi scheme that works as long as people are paying in but would obviously crash down as soon as it runs out of lessees. looks like they're also just keeping the 'holding deposit'. don't know how they would deal with the tenancy agreement...tippex maybe! she went to get her holding deposit back this afternoon and was met with a very aggressive man screaming at her. i can't believe people risk running these scams here...it's obviously easy to do it because otherwise there wouldn't be so many people doing it but the sanctions are heavy.

Thank you all :) Sounds like a toss up between Bubblicious or Ibn Battuta :) If anyone's been to both would appreciate comparisons (although I'm with your DH SweetSugar123, the dessert room at Ibn Battuta sounds amazing!)

I always sing the praises of Naomi Seivewright at Up and Running in Umm Suqueim. I'm not sure if she is taking on new patients at the moment but worth getting on her waiting list: www.upandrunningdubai.com 04 328 4600

Bahri Bar!!! Also in the Madinat, great views over the Burj, never too noisy and nice low chairs that you can cosy next to each other. Was there recently with a bunch of friends and one of them actually pronounced that he had no clue why we were there since "it is just a first date place isn't it?"

suze63 replied : Actually I think Bubblicious is one of the best for kids entertainment! Mina a Salam is also a good one (that's probably the one we go to most). I'd be happy with either of those to take guests to. That's interesting suze63, I've never seen the kids area at either of those brunches but have just looked on Time Out - where is the petting zoo and bouncy castle?! Also, has anyone been to Ibn Battuta? What sort of food is on offer (none of the reviews seem to mention that but they do rave about the kid's entertainment). Thanks both :)

yes but only muscat. i've heard salalah is gorgeous and if you like camping there are an abundance of places you can drive to where you'll be surrounded by nature and wadis and the temperature is (even in the summer) in the 20s! so that's my next trip. muscat is easy to fly to with flydubai. be aware that there are not many hotels in the centre of muscat and many are closer to the airport (and so a 20ish minute drive into muscat proper). muscat is tiny and easily do-able in a weekend (or a day!) go to the souk, haggle for everything, wander around the town and meet the wonderfully friendly omani people. then go diving at oman dive centre.

when i have one of those days i call a call centre in the UK to remember that bad service and manners aren't reserved for the UAE or remember the time my handbag got stolen or i flash back to any day commuting on the tube, being shoved and pushed and having to be the one person who asked who would stand up for an elderly person or pregnant woman (and often watch as noone did even then) and watching kids sit with their feet on the seats, listening to their ipods at full volume, shouting obscenities and spraying their fizzy drinks at each other (and anyone else sitting nearby). there ARE so many rude people here but i find the utter breakdown of polite society in the UK far more worrying :/

Get a keratin treatment - even in this humidity my (normally frizzy) hair stays bone straight. And if you put it up it's less likely to get The Kink!

Thanks Valt. I have seen some bad feedback re Posh Paws on here :( mmll03, thank you, I will get in touch with Fiona. In case she is full, I have also had recommendations for Dubai Kennels and Cattery (DKC) - any feedback would be very greatly received! :)

be very careful with any company that does not have a website/registration numbers etc (i don't know if supreme way does, just a word of warning). i had to move at short notice just after Eid last year and all of the big companies were fully booked so used a company recommended by a couple of friends. to cut a long story short, they stole 2 phones (one was my UK one and they racked up over AED6,000 of calls to pakistan and bangladesh before i noticed it was gone), jewellery, clothes, kitchen items. i got most of the AED6,000 back by going to the grandpa who ran the hole-in-the-wall company but the rest of it was history :( i will never use anyone other than emovers again.

they do this at the intercontinental festival city too. again, i'm not normally shy but found it quite jarring to walk into the relaxation area in my robe and find myself face to face with a guy in his robe. sure he felt just as uncomfortable. can't imagine what a local lady would have felt.

Thank you Shamat. I have enquired with Homely Petz because I'm sure they would prefer to stay at home but they insist that animals are kept indoors the whole time. I understand their reasoning but mine like to stomp around my garden and I think if 3 cats were confined to my flat for 2 weeks I'd come back to a very unpleasant scene! So I can't really use them unfortunately.
