I live in Doha, but will be in Dubai for the weekend. The choices (and prices) are far superior in Dubai!

Hello all. Need to get some Eid shopping done, and was wondering where to go for unstiched Pakistani suits - both fancy and for everyday wear. Any specific stores in Dubai/Sharjah which sell brand names such as Sana Safinaz, Gul Ahmed, LSM etc? Thanks

Both my daughter and I donate to an organization called 'Locks of Love', You can get more details from their web site: http://www.locksoflove.org/. Not sure which salon can help you here though.

JoyceB I am Muslim and am not at all appalled by this. We all make mistakes, and the best among us are the ones who learn from our mistakes and vow never to repeat them. Think of this as a learning experience, and don't beat yourself up. You are very fortunate to have a husband who is so kind and understanding, and in a short amount of time this will be history.

I was there as well, working my way through college in the city, I finally got home at 2 am, due to the kindness of a stranger. Yes it was devastating, something which bay area residents remembered for years.

You're welcome RachelA. Btw if you're looking for expensive material, Souq Al Diera has a wide variety. Souk Al Asiery next to it is good for cotton and other less expensive fabrics.

Yes. The official closing time is 1-4 pm, but many of the stores start closing early 12-12:30ish.

My 2 cents: I have children in both Primary and Secondary schools at QA, and am extremely satisfied not only with the quality of education, but also with the general culture of the school. They offer the IB program, along with PYP and MYP. In regards to Qatarization, only the Primary school is going through this, and am told is temporary. ESL is also not a problem, all children are required to have a good command over English when they enter. As far as the Secondary school is concerned, I know several students who were accepted into Ivy League colleges upon graduation - which speaks for itself. I agree with RachelA, both ASD and QA are excellent schools. QA is more affordable if your company does not provide 100% tuition.

There are several agencies in Souk Ali, located opposite the immigration office. I know a few people who got their maids through them, and are satisfied.

I usually use one of the cheap pillows. You can find them in places like Rownaq for about QR 7 apiece.

Qatar Academy has both PYP & MYP, but getting accepted there is like finding the holy grail. The British School & Gulf English School also have recently started to offer IB.

I have purchased similar furniture from Souk Haraj in the Najma area recently. Its a bunch of shops selling basically everything in a large courtyard. Here are the directions to it. Sorry if it's dicy, got it from Qatar Living: Souk Haraj Najma: Ok when you go down C ring road towards the airport. At the traffic light just before Gulf Cinema, turn left. Go straight at the rdbt, at the traffic light turn right. Now you are in Najma area. There are a lot of cheap furniture shops there. But you want to go to Souq Haraj. So after you have turned right at the light, turn left at the first or second street (sorry am not to sure on this) This is a small street and then after about 50 meters you will see gates on your right. Go in there. This is souq Haraj. Drive/walk around and look if you see anything. Best is to go in the morning. It gets pretty crowded. Also go in daylight as lighting is not too good. http://www.qatarliving.com/node/135324#ixzz1aL0kYQ6p

The Gharaffa health center is the one closest to EC. You need to go there and get the application forms. If you are on Al Luqta st and QF is on your left hand side, go right at the next roundabout. EC housing will be on your left hand side. Go straight on this road past the Al Meera grocery store. The health center will be on your left hand side, right at the roundabout. After you get the forms, you need to take them, along with all other documents, pictures etc, to the health center in Madina Khalifa - close to immigration r/a to obtain your health cards. There is a separate window for women, and service is efficient.

You should surrender her passport to the police station at the holding jail, which is on Salwa Rd, past the industrial area, on the way to the Saudi border. From then on she is their responsibility. The police are very efficient in such cases. When they find her she will be held there until either you pay for her deportation (ie plane ticket), or they will keep her until whenever. Once she is deported you can apply for another maid. This is not uncommon. When I first came here, my sympathies were always with the maids, but now I know better. There are many maids who are wonderful and come here to better their lives, yet there are others who leave much to be desired.

There is no equivalent of Ravi's here, which is mainly a Pakistani restaurant. The only decent Pakistani here is Shezan - opposite Al Ahli hospital. Their grilled items are great, but I wont recommend their buffet.

Update - the cat has been taken by a nice family with children. A word of advice for others who may have a pet to re home in the future. This is something that I found out through this process, of which I was naively unaware of. I had posted this on other web sites, and I received a tremendous response, mainly from men. I started to get suspicious and ask them why they want this cat. They tried to convince me they just wanted a pet, but one eventually blurted out he wanted it for breeding. From then on I told everyone the cat has been neutered. Sadly it seems pet mills are quite rampant here, specially for the most 'desirable' animals.

You can find it in Lulu in the personal grooming section (don't know why). Its called boric acid powder, just ask one of the workers for its exact location.
