How is general safety in Turkey? And do they all speak English? Do you need to hire a private guide and/or a car to do the tours?

For some reason I think the price of lamb got up so much it almost doubled from maybe a year ago? Beef seems to be OK though. We went to a Lebanese restaurant the other day and ordered lamb chops. We got 4 tiny little pieces of them on a whole plate of fries. It was laughable. Well I don't blame the restaurant. They must be under the same price pressure as well.

mine bill has doubled in last few months. use to buy vegetables from spinneys and fruits from lulu but now i goto 3 different supermarkets!prices are escalating. and my biggest problem is bread.use to buy swiss cottage but saw fungus in there once and that too in fresh bread so ave stopped buying that. and it doesn't help that i use to cost me 7 AED for small.being only 2 in the family i have to throw bread out after every 3 days :( have tried so many but not tasty enough. Freeze the fresh bread. Take them out and let stand for sometime. As good as fresh!

Spending summer back home would definitely help. Also speaking only the mother tone at home, and get a set of school text book from your home country and give regular lessons to the kids. If you can not do it yourself, then get a tutor.

In Chinese culture it is always a nice compliment to say to someone 'Oh you look healthy and seem to have gained some weight/becoming a bit fatter' LOL. And if they think a person has lost some weight, it would always be mentioned with great concern, followed by questions like 'Are you feeling well recently?' or something like that. The younger generations don't hold this kind of views anymore, but older people may still say something like that.

Just a separate comment. Kids only get to stay home for 18 years before they leave for the outside world. Why not keep them home for the entire 18 years if you could? After that it would be luxury to have them home. Have you had teenagers yet? Not yet. But sending them away does not sound like a real solution to teen problems.

The Japanese bookstore at Dubai mall has a good selection of music exam books. You might give them a call or just go there to check it out yourself to see if they have the book you need. The section is at the back of the store, past the kids section, outside of the cafe area.

There should be a service center for the brand. Ask the place where you bought the machine, they should have the contact info.

You should be fine. Beijing is very cosmopolitan, with large expat population. Lot's of things to do you won't get bored. But summer is hot and air is very polluted. Wait til late Sept. and Oct. for the weather to clear up and by that time it can be gorgeous. Do get to know where to shop, and bargain hard. The difference in how much you end up paying can be day and night. LOL. Also if you don't have a full time job, try to pick up a part time job to teach English. Handsome income to support your shopping trips~~

BM, In the US it's standard that if an item goes on sale within 2 weeks of when you purchased it, you simply show your receipt and you get refunded the difference in price. I think this is the system that the OP is used to, and I'm assuming is what she was asking the store in question to do for her. I don't see then why there are so many people pouring into stores for the "markdown days" ??? If it was as simple as that then they wouldn't give a monkeys, they would just get it when they liked it ( ie within 2 weeks before) then go back and say "Hey I want some money back as this is now on sale" and the shop would hand over................:\: For the simple reason that women are not logical animals:) You see things you like and you buy, then forget about it. Plus you need to spend time and gasoline to drive to the mall in order to get that price adjustment. People either forget or are too lazy to go just for that alone.

In some shops in the UK, if you try to return an item that is now in the sale you only get the current sale price back, not the full amount. I guess this stops people trying that trick... UK store keepers are smart:) The US stores will most likely give you the difference.

I think it all got mixed up with several different scenarios! No return of worn items. Except when it was a defect. But refund the difference for previously bought items, if a sale goes on the next day. That is where I stand. Off my soapbox:\: edited by floppy123 on 29/05/2011

it's not really ethically right though is it.....? They should just give her the refund. If they don't want this to happen, they can do things, such as taking the inventory off sale for say 2 weeks which would let the refund period expire so people can not return previously bought items.

[ She would be returning the brand new pair, not the worn pair. Just getting the difference back. Its not right thou is it? Why? This is only a workaround to get the refunds. IMO the store should just give her the difference with the original receipt, and she does not need to do this complicated maneuver. If they really want to stop people from doing this they should come up with a way, which would not be hard. I know people do things that they really should not do, such as buying a night gown or interview suits and wear once then return. Same thing for shoes. Or even return electronics after 6mo of use. You would be surprised at the length people would go if the stores allow them. I am against these kind of abuse, but in the case we discuss, I really think she deserves the difference back.

Buy again and return with the first receipt. :\: People do this all the time in the US. Actually people don't really do this. Only the reasoning of this is enough for the sales to give the diffrence back to the customer. But since they don' t do reasoning as well in here... There you go:)

Just a question- if you buy an item, and notice within 5 days that it is on sale, and you have started to use it, but now it is cheaper by say 40%( within 5 days) what would you do? Would you go back? I went to sun& sand- bought shoes for my daughter- this was last friday- 22nd. on 27th I went back to the mall and incidentally my daughter was wearing those shoes- I noticed that the price had dropped by 30%- i asked the sales lady, if she would let me return the shoes and buy the same at the sale price and she disagreed- she said they were worn already and she couldnt do so anymore. Was very upset as if she had done so, I would have saved 70aed. Can I do something about it as this thread brought this back to my mind.. Buy again and return with the first receipt.

This is maddening, but I also feel sorry for the sales people. They are not any more stupid than others working say in a US store. It is really the store policy that is causing this kind of problem. In other countries they give refund or exchange without fuss, only because the store policy allows them to do so. Given the huge markup they have here on everything, it is really a shame that customers get such treatment. edited by floppy123 on 29/05/2011 edited by floppy123 on 29/05/2011

One advise is to google for the real branded bags, I checked for LV, they put every tiny bit of details about the bags with pics from zipper to leather so u can know how the original looks Like Also I got LV sunglasses for around 80 dhs (I'm not that good in bargaining), actually it's very nice and the glasses are clear Wow that is great advice! Be careful about sunglasses though. If the lenses are not good quality (UV prove or what you have), they could actually harm your eyes and you may not feel it.

Makes you think: 1. Who in the world is willing to pay full price to get a real designer bag when a fake is every bit as real? 2. Why assume anyone is carrying a real one afterall then?;) I admit when I see a nice bag, first thing comes to my mind is 'real or fake?' I just can't help it.

Funny someone posted this here. I've been wondeering the following.... i believe to get a visa for china from here you have to be a resident. What happens if you were to get a tourist visa for china then have your Dubai residents visa cancelled? Of course I'll call the consulate and fine out but wondering if anyone has done it. Don't quite understand the question, but I remember that UAE residence visa was one of the document copies they requested for Chinese visa. Also when you go through immigration, they always check your UAE visa, isn't it? So you really need both (UAE and China visa) in order to get on the airplane. So you will need to have some kind of document to show that you are allowed to stay in UAE legally at that point, if not a visa. Am I making sense here? edited by floppy123 on 21/05/2011

It should be easy and straight forward. Get the form, put on the picture, take all documents and copies with you. Once they review the docs and decide everything is great, you pay the fee. They give you a ticket. You come back in 4 business days to get your passport with visa. You can also pay more (like double) to get the visa the same day.

floppy - yes, the law should be introduced and I fervently hope that it shall be introduced soon. How can a law be introduced to enforce car seats in cars when local are being actively encouraged to have 5+ children? the two are not compatible. While it is ideal, it is not realistic. Business oppotunity! Some one should make special carseats that have 4 or 5 slots and fit into the back row of the car:) Let them squeeze but it saves their lives! http://www.multimac.co.uk/home :) Darn it! Why do you think kids in the US can tolerate car seat better than kids here? Because the cops said so~ Or mommy will get a $200 ticket the minute she drives out of the parking lot~~~ The police don't approach you and give you a talk, they just give you the ticket~ edited by floppy123 on 19/05/2011

The rear setbelt isn't yet law and so the police won't stop people for not buckling up - my hope is that the law will be introduced and then ENFORCED! If it is not law yet, then the first step would be to try to get the law set up. As of now, people who do not buckle up in the back seat would be doing so legally. So if someone tells others in their face and argues that 'my way is better than what the law says, and you should listen to me to save your kid's life!', it would be a bit too much. General campaign might be better approach. No one will refuse a flyer with general information. Also in the western countries, if the laws are not so stringent, I bet there would be way more people who do not buckle up, and do not put their kids in car seats. It is the law that really matters, and really works. If the police here really clam down and hand out hefty fines, like the parking situation, I bet all those bouncy kids in the back of the cars will be buckled up and behaving nicely in no time~~~

Ok, so having thought about these comments today since seeing my fellow class-mum with her baby being held (as per posts below), at pick-up time I braved it and approached her while waiting for class to break. I took the suggestion and complimented her on her beautiful baby girl (about 3 months old) that we all saw this morning and said how gorgeous she was and how important to keep them safe. I then said that I noticed this morning that the housemaid held her in the car and asked her had she considered using a baby car seat (asked in a polite kind of way). Her response was "oh this is my husbands car, not my car. I have a baby car seat in my car". Now I have seen her in both cars so I asked her "can you not take the car seat out and put it in the other car to keep the baby safe?" I went on to explain that if she was involved in an accident then maybe the housmaid would let go of the baby, the baby would get hurt etc. Her response was "yes, you are right, it is very dangerous". End of conversation..... So I feel I did my bit and it is up to her now. Maybe it is a cultural thing, I don't know but I know she had enough English to understand what I was saying. I don't want her to feel like a bad mum but if maybe it shames her into putting her baby into a seat tommorow, then just maybe that baby's life is a little bit safer than it was today. Actually I think that woman was trying to be polite, since you approached her in a nice way and complimented the child first. Otherwise she may not even be this nice. See they are not stupid, of course they know they should put the kids in car seat etc. They do not need to get unsolicited (and not professional, shall we say) education from others. They do so by choice, not out of ignorance. That is why there has to be laws and there are police officers out there to catch the offenders. Honestly, if you approach strangers and start to criticize the way they care for their kids, most people will become defensive. Unless you think they are TOTALLY ignorant and do no know anything about car seats/seat belt, then by all means tell them and let them know. Otherwise it is better not to just approach and lecture strangers. Also people may not realize, oftentimes it would come across as condescending, 'I know better than you' kind, even if you did not mean it in that way.

I am sure they all know what safety belts/car seats are for, and just choose not to use them. That is why there are laws and law enforcement officers out there (supposedly), to force people to comply. So I would say it is not your job to approach strangers and tell them what they should do. Doing something to raise general awareness might be a better approach.

You make friends among parents who have kids in the same activities, or neighbors who live in the same compound. sorry but neither of those has worked for me.... great if it does, though... yeah, location coincidence and kids in a common school as a criteria for friends? great if it works for you, but not for me. Not that these are prerequisite or something, just that it increases the chance for personal contact, and therefore possibility to make friends. Also putting off guard and not taking one self too seriously could help. But really, one needs to invest time and effort and energy if really wants to find a 'real' friend, not too much unlike dating~

D&C is relative common procedure to 'clean up' the linings of your uterus. It is done for people after miscarriage, or with polyps etc. They do biopsy afterwards so they will know what was causing your bleeding. You don't have to worry too much. Should be fine. Your periods should not be affected by this procedure. Your spotting might stop because the polyp or whatever was causing it has been removed, which would be the purpose of the procedure. Best wishes~~

You really all think you should pay for the maid to sit down and have the brunch with the family? It is not cheap. Probably more than 1/10 of her monthly salary. She probably would prefer you just give her the cash. And being maid is a job, just like being a waiter in a rastaurant. The waiters don't eat along with the customers. So come to think of it, it may not be as bad as it looks IF the maid had had her meal already before they went to the brunch, and was just performing her job duty while the family eats. Of course she should be provided a chair for sure.
