I don't have a maid. I have seen families with nannies at fast food / food court and they typically buy a meal for the nanny as well. I don't know about brunch situation. It is probably too expensive to pay for the nanny to have the brunch. If it was up to me, I would probably just take the kids and leave the nanny home.

You know what people can do to get back to someone they don't like? For the same reason I never openly question or challange a waiter in restaurant, at least not before I finish my meal~~~ I never had a maid in my entire life. I don't trust people that much... Oops.

Something I never understood is this: who on earth would dare to treat a maid in such way? Afterall the maid is in your house, has access to your kitchen, toilet and bedrooms, takes care of your kids. I would be afaid to think of what the maid might do in return to such treatment:\:

Does she have a car? Many kids drive to the new place and take stuff along. If she really needs to ship stuff, UPS is OK. I shipped two big boxes years ago. I remember it was about $95. Maybe post office is cheaper, I don't know.

I love what Condeleeza Rice said when she got attitude in an expensive jewellery shop. 'Let's get one thing clear. If you could afford anything in here, you wouldn't be behind this counter. So I strongly suggest you do your job.' She really said that? LOL. Wonder what kind of service she got after this~~~ Can' t be really good!

I'd second the great service in Karama! At least they actively encourage you to buy. Was out with my fake channel today. Sitting in Mercato mall and this sweet, dressed to the nines Emirati girl came up to me with an identical bag in another colour. She said "oooh, I love this colour. I wanted one of those." I smiled and said hers was very pretty too. So she sits down and we compare the bags. No joke mine was identical. Totally identical apart from the colour. I looked inside and everything - we were comparing make up at that point. I know there are many women who claim to spot a fake at 100 paces but Ms designer Emirati couldn't... I asked where she got hers and she said "oh Paris... you couldn't get this colour here." Hilarious. I did ponder whether she had actually got hers in the same shop as me in Karama but I figured everything else (jewelry, watch) looked pretty real that her bag was real. LOL. What I get from this is that you have to dress the part if you carry a designer bag- real or fake!~

My friend sends her kids to Choueifat AD. From what I know, the school is definitely not to the taste of typical US/UK parents. But then again, it is not as horrible as lots of people believe. For example, they do have tests even for 3 year olds in KG1. Then again, it is more of a formality thing than actual hard testing. If anything, it is more ridiculous than difficult. And even for higher grades, the tests are not super hard for most kids. Also the kids do not sit straight for hours without break. Actually they spend too much time outside during lunch break that parents complain about kids getting too hot out there. I think they have about 1.5 hours of lunch break. Kids get to play and some go to activities such as choir and ballet etc. And the classrooms walls are not bare, they do have art work, posters etc. The real problem with the school, in my opinion, is that they feed too much and do not let the kids to enough of free thinking. There are lots of requirement on memorization, not enough training on writing and presentation. Also the school has been around for so long, the facilities are not in the best conditions any more. With all the new schools coming up, lots of people who can afford are transferring their kids out. Overall, the school provides decent education especially in science and math. But lacks good training in areas that require original thinking.

Why does it have to be girly? The important thing is quality of the set and the lengh of clubs that fits your height. Sun and Sand has some decent selections.

She is very much her real person. I like her just for that. But why on earth does she need to lose weight? She was not fat to start with, and now she is a little too skinny. Her waist was so tiny it was a bit scary~~~ And it made her face look older than her 29 years of age.

She really did her own makeup? That was courageous. But really she should probably let the professionals help her. The makeup could have been a bit more subtle and natural. The chest portion of the dress and the evening dress were indeed a bit strange. I thought that was the 70's style coming back.

Interesting topic. Not an expat kid myself but obviously a mom to expat kids now:) Do you think having grown up as an expat kid, it would be much easier for you to take up a job overseas and become an expat yourself later in life? I am thinking it may not be a bad thing, as the world is now so integrated, it would be a nice plus if they have the capability to chase the best opportunities around anywhere in the world:)

I think regardless of the school's curriculum, whether a child might be discriminated (or better use the word alienated) would probably depend on two things. First of course would be the make up of the student body. If 99% of the students are from the same country/background, then the lonely outsider might be sidelined quite easily. The second thing would be the individual child's personality. If the child is naturally friendly, funny, and also firm with leadership capabilities, he or she can easily fit into any kind of environment and be happy. That being said, second to a mostly multinational school, it is probably easier for a child to fit into a mostly American system than a mostly British system.

We went to HongKong and visited Disneyland when my DS was 5 years old. We did not stay in the resort hotel, rather there is a train line you can take anywhere from downtown HK, and it was quite easy to reach the Disneyland, about 20 min or so, very nice, clean and fast train. At 5, my child really enjoyed it, we cramed everything into just one day. If you want to be more relaxed, two days should be enough. You might want to save the extra day to visit other attractions in HK.

And if you did know, what exactly would you be able to do about it? By the time we'd find out that it has managed to reach dangerous levels around the world, we won't have many options as it will already be in all our necessities (food, water, air). Like buy milk and wait til 3 days after expiration before drinking~~~ The half life of Iodine 131 is 8 days~~~Really nothing much we can do. But I still want to know.

They dumped tons of radioactive water directly into the ocean. And fish of course swim... Do we (the world) really know exactly how much radiation was dumped? I don't think the Japanese government is telling the truth, actually they probably have no idea neither. And some of the stuff will be there forever as far as human being is concerned. And accumulative once it gets into the food chain. Only thing comforting is that it will be 'tiny amount'. It is scary that they now use Chernobyl as bench mark for comparison, as if if it is lower than Chernobyl, it is not that bad... Good thing we are very far, probably as far as possible (as population centers) from there!

I believe there is a protection plan you can buy from the bank that will guarantee a 48hour window before you are liable for any of the charges in case the card is lost or stolen. I do not have the plan as of now, thanks to DH's procrastination. But I am keen to get on the plan asap. Does anyone know how much it costs and how exactly does the plan work? Also it seems from what I read here, the bank is actually refunding to you the fraud charges? I thought here in the UAE you would be liable for any charges before you inform the bank and they freeze the card? I read that from local newspaper sometime ago.

We're coming to Dubai (from Doha) for a long weekend, and I'd like to book tickets to go to the top of the tower. Any thoughts on what time of day/eve/night is the most spectacular or interesting viewing? Also, what's the best (and not crazy expensive) option for seeing the fountains? I'll be traveling with my teenage son, so not looking for fancy or romantic dining. Thanks! edited by RachelA on 19/04/2011 The fountains are free actually. You can just find a nice spot outside and watch all you want.

Its a minimum spend of 200AED and for 200AED you get quite a few Mocktails or wine/beer etc, even snacks. Far better money spent than going going up to the observation deck IMHO How much is regular ticket to the observation deck?

The new Radio 2 morning pair - British girl paired with the new, very American guy, is kind of interesting. It certainly takes getting used to, adjusting one's ear to the different accents constantly. But it can be kind of fun.

Guess it all depends on whether wearing it would get you into trouble or unwanted attention. If nobody minds and you don't mind, then by all means wear what you like. Otherwise it probably would not worth the trouble.

I saw some gluten free bread items in LuLu Supermarket. In the same area with all the other bread items, but on separate shelfs. I don't know if all LuLu's carry the same products though.
