My youngest DD is going to start boarding in UK in Sept. We looked at schools that were close to family (for exeat weekends) and also those that weren't huge as all her previous schools have been relatively small. As DD will be studying A levels we also looked at subject s offered. Biggest thing though was we restricted search to UK state schools with boarding - so you only end up paying for boarding not the education.

Can concur with egg! Raffles produce THE best Christmas buffet - don't think there is anything that they haven't thought of to make it such a memorable Christmas.

It is a relatively small school (2 classes per year group) it has been around since the 70's, places importance on the basics of good manners, discipline, good mix of nationalities, fantastic grounds & facilities, integration of older and younger pupils, recently received 'outstanding' from both KHDA and British School inspections and fantastic exam results well above the UK national average, oh and reasonable fees too.

I have just (in last 3 weeks) renewed my 16 yr old DD's passport (had a child's passports and was born overseas). I filled in all the sections, incl all parents details and enclosed the old passport ( don't forget the 16 yr old has to sign form). Received new passport Thursday :)

Why not try Raffles for afternoon tea - from 1st Dec they will be opening a door every day in their floor to ceiling advent calendar, and if you're having tea then you get a gift!

I would agree with scotslass and check jobs on this website as I know of a few teachers who are moving from their positions end of this term - so schools will be looking to hire for january. Either that or put your cv in for supply as man schools are looking for more supply teachers to call on.

Probably my favourite restaurant is Fire and Ice at Raffles. They've had a new chef for a few month and the menu has so much on it that I want to eat, not just steaks, and the setting is so pretty.

Hi FairyPrincess, My eldest went to St Winifred's, youngest was about to start when we left. The island is so small that you really don't have to worry too much as to where you live vs school. Warrens is pretty central area. We lived in 3 different properties but all in St James, 2 along coast in Porters, and then last inland a little,in Prior Park. I have friends who lived right up in St Peter, way inland in St George and St Thomas, or then south in Christchurch, and they all had children at the same school.

We lived in Bim for 8 years, although left 10 years ago. It is an amazing place and my 2 DDs were born there. It is EXPENSIVE!!! Housing, groceries, drink, eating out.... Schooling is ok up to age 16 but then most families send their children overseas. I have loads of contacts still there if you need more up to date info.

I feel for your stress Ginee - but don't panic :) Star Mirdif, as far as I know, have places for FS1 - and regardless of the problem the school may have had ( well documented on here!), the foundation department is solid and they got a good report from the KHDA. ...and so far no news of fee increase either! You could give it a try.

Raffles at Wafi are doing a major event. Like last year's royal wedding but even bigger - in the ballroom so lots more space. We've booked as a group of 19. The chef even called my friend back with all the details of the event as reservations didn't know all the answers. As well as the roast with all the trimmings they're going to have pie and mash, seafood with cockles and jellied eels - a real Brit event, sounds fab!

We bought one from Ikea - you have to assemble it yourself, but not difficult. Also the files run vertically from the front so it's a lot more compact than proper 'office' filing cabinets. edited by flyingfinn on 12/05/2012

If the noun is in the plural, ie champions, and the program 'belongs' to the champions - then it should read " champions' program ". If the noun is singular, ie champion, then it should read "champion's program" . Hope this makes sense :)

I have booked for this year on reccomendation of 3 friends who went last year. I have been to the regular roast on a Friday a few times, and it"s always been excellent - the exec chef is a Brit who knows all the trimmings that are expected for a proper roast, so i have full confidence that Xmas will be fab!! I hear it's getting booked up quickly though.

I had to renew both DD's passports mere months after arriving here, so no chance of knowing anyone for 2 years. Contacted consulate and they said any British citizen could sign it, as long as they held a senior position etc, - so I got the HR director at my DH's work to do it. No problems.

Both my DDs had braces at Nicholas & Asp Healthcare City. Both had retainers and still have the fixed metal wire on the inside of the lower set. Over a year in and both still have lovely smiles with no twisting or moving of the teeth. While sometimes the treatment was annoyingly slow as the students had to wait for the professor to check their work etc, (oh and don't get me started about them talking over both DDs in Arabic and then not explaining what was going to happen in English... ), but at 7,500dhs you really can't complain! Go and have a chat and see what they say.

I have been in the club at Raffles a few times (the one at the very top with the giant statue over the bar - called New Asia Lounge or something like that) - never had any problems to go in (it was over a yr ago though). Friends and I weren't dressed up to the nines either....maybe things have changed over the last yr though. We enjoyed ourselves there, although drinks were very expensive...it is a bit posey though, like many places in Dubai... The old nightclub was New Asia Bar but now it is called People and is run by the company Chrystal. It is extremely popular, full of Dubai's beautiful people, with everyone dressed to the nines! The club is only open Thursday& Friday nights and entrance is by queing up at the ballroom entrance and then upstairs via the lifts. Reservations for tables or the VIP area are available.

[i'>I know loads of people who have sent their kids to BS in the last few months. Sorry to say it but JESS has shot itself in the foot by going the IB route for 6th form and there are so many other cultural and social issues in Dxb for teenagers it is just running out of ideas IMHO. JC is the little ray of hope for us after GCSE but everywhere else...???[/i'> Highjacking the thread but in response .. .. for A levels, why not consider Sharjah English School - only just over the border off Emirates Rd, good results every year - if we're still here tnext Sept my DD will be staying on . edited by flyingfinn on 02/09/2011

I would say that you would be fine living in Sharooq or Gharooq - I know that another school in Mirdif (british curriculum) house their teachers there too, so there is the opportunity to meet other western dare I say, teachers.
