I have been trying to get smarter on this topic to protect myself from landlords who think they can take advantage of Westerners and claim "the market is back up" when I think it is anything but that. I have found this government website to be helpful with information for understanding the laws. What I am unsure of is how easy it is to get these laws enforced when fellow Westerners are taken advantage of - but I hope some find this helpful: http://www.dubailand.gov.ae/english/Tanzeem/Rentals/rental_process.aspx

Thanks so much Sanddy_Dogg, although I am a short timer, the one lesson I have learned already is to do everything you can to avoid having to go and wait in a government office! Not fun! MMI and A&E won't issue the licence but they will do everything for you. They hold the forms for you to fill in. You hand it in to MMI or A&E, they will send it to whichever govt. department deals with it, and you collect from them again when the licence is ready. Be sure to tell your friend, it will save them time having to visit the government office (and of course, one would need to make sure they applied at the correct government office).

Can someone recommend where to buy a used car? I was looking for a Honda preferably, but don't need a new one, I am only here for several years. I thought the Honda dealers would be the best place to go but they all told me that they only sell new. I heard that there is a part of town or neighborhood that has a bunch of used car lots, but I'm not sure wheer to begin? Does anyone know where the used car neighborhood in Dubai is? And is it safe? And how do I know where I can find a good and trustworthy bargain?

I had a friend tell me that you had to go to a government office to get a liquor license. Isn't MMI a private business?
