The reason why a lot of diets limit coffee is that caffeine stimulates insulin production. As well as controlling blood sugar one of insulins "other jobs" is to promote the storage of fat - so any excess insulin will do just that. Also the more insulin you produce the lower your blood sugar will go, which leads to hunger and cravings.

If your balcony is not sheltered and gets a good breeze then hang a few long plastic strips from the roof (if it has one) or put them on sticks in pots - the fluttering of these will keep the birds away.

I know the N.bar salon in the Grovsner House Hotel uses Lycon wax, perhaps their other salons do as well ( green community and Ibn Battuta? I think) perhaps you could ring them to check.

In his defence he says he didn't cross the red, but it must have turned red before he got to the other side (so he must have crossed orange...). I think you get caught when you leave your side orange, but don't get to the other side before it turns red! How do you know though? Do you get a text? Something similar happened to me twice last week! Was slowing down on flashing green when big SUV behind me honking and flashing lights so i had to carry on or risk being rear ended.. it was amber as I was going through but not sure if it changed before I got through .. I absolutely never do this i always slow down when they flash green but BOTH times I was in a single lane with a fast impatient SUV right on my tail, I do not know which is worse being rear ended by one of those in my small car of going through on amber, difficult to make the call in that situation. To get a text, you have to register on the police website, otherwise you can check for fines on the police website Thank you - will go to check with some trepidation I have to say Yay- no fines :)

Try Greenscapes - they are a reliable company and I know they will remove the palm trees. Call Nasser on 0 5 0 1 0 01 0 0 9 As for selling them presumably they are yours to sell and not a LL's - I think it will depend on the quality of the palms(age - disease free etc) and whether anyone can utilise them straightaway <em>edited by Genie on 10/04/2012</em>

Now the question is.....why do they feel the need to do a mock practice? I agree..... There is more to this than meets the eye ;) These are regular drills for emergency services / hospitals usually run as a combined drill as the hospiials go into major incident mode. They are absolutely essential to practice for all sorts of scenarios - plane crash/ toxic spill etc. so that the emergency services / hospitals have practice in dealing with these occurences. I was involved before in planning / observing and giving feedback on these drills; each time a drill is held flaws/ areas for improvement are identified and then built into an updated plan. Major incident plans and drills are conducted in most countries.

The average cost for NICU care in the UK is 1200 pounds ( approx 7000 AED) per night - that is not the charge but the costs of delivering the care. I worked in NICU for over 15 years - some of the medications needed cost 1000 pounds for just one dose .. Then babies born at this gestation need on average 2-3 months care, add in any complications that develop and the stay is longer and the care gets even more expensive.. I think 1 million for twins delivered at that gestation is probably about right as it would cost nearly half a million a month for both if their care was "straighforward" with no complications. I know of quite a few cases here where the government has waived the bills in such cases as a humanitarian gesture <em>edited by Genie on 04/04/2012</em>

OP - I have recently done this and it is very straightforward. If you are a British citizen and this is a renewal with no name or status change, then use the smart form as it is simple and speeds up the process http://www.fco.gov.uk/en/travel-and-living-abroad/passports1/apply/new/ and the notes for helping you fill in the smart form are comprehnesive and easy to understand, I suggest you print them off and refer to them as you fill in the form http://www.fco.gov.uk/resources/en/pdf/travel-living-abroad/passports/passport-smart-form-guidance.pdf Basically if you fufill the criteria above there are very few sections you have to complete, each time you answer no to a question (are you changing name etc) whole pages are then blanked out and you move to the next section. Basically I had to fil in the name and address section, the details of previous passport section and the next of kin. Once completed print it off and sign Also print off the creditcard form and fill that in. You do not need documents (if straightforward renewal) just the phots that do not need to be attested. It is useful to print off the photo guidelines that are on the site as apparantley a lot of applications are rejected because the photos do not meet the guidelines. Put it all in an envelope with the Dsseldorf address and take to a DHL office. You can pay an extra fee for fast next day delivery. You can also pay a 10 DH fee which means they will send you a text once your passport is delivered and signed for. The whole process took just over 3 weeks for me. HTH ETA - sorry mant to say that the only document you need is the orignal passport of course <em>edited by Genie on 04/04/2012</em>

The Daily mail is the worst paper it sensationalizes everything, I don’t know why anyone even reads it. I agree - for me it's the online equivalent of Hello magazine that I flick through when in a salon- I don't actually read it just look at the pictures in the sidebar. Though I have to say this article yesterday caught my eye and I did read it but am convinced it is a Daily Mail special windup to increase viewing figures or something.

I read the original article yesterday and I can't help but think the whole thing is some sort of wind up or social experiment. I know beauty is in the eye of the beholder and maybe she looks better in the flesh, but to me she cannot be described as beautiful, fairly attractive at best (unless she is just not photogenic). I cannot imagine anyone talking about themselves and criticizing their friends and neighbours in the national press because of their negative reaction to their beauty. Imagine having to face them again!! Nobody could be that thick skinned surely? I am sure in a few days we will see an article analysing the whole thing. <em>edited by Genie on 04/04/2012</em>

Yes it is next to Carluccio's , right infront of that purple gelato place. I saw it on Saturday, it looks like one of those brow bars in the UK but more upmarket. How do you unsubscribe from Groupon. Please help!!! I also want to unsubscribe but don;t know how to. They flood my emails with junk every day I tried unsuccesfully to unsubscribe - twice. So I identified their emails as spam and now they just go straight to my junk box and get automatically deleted after 30 days so I don't have to see them anymore.

My standard reply is "yes I am married with 6 children, 3 boys and 3 girls and yes my husband is here with me in Dubai" None of that is remotely true but it stops a lot of questions and insulting (to me) comments. Not that I don't chat with taxi drivers, I do - some are very interesting - but as soon as they as they start that line of questioning that is my standard response.

LOL - no worries, no assumptions assumed :D. I need a hernia repair and an abdominoplasty to repair my tummy muscles for various reasons. If a doctor tells me I need a tummy tuck, I'm not complaining! This would fall into the category of essential I would say .. and in a weird sort of way lucky you!! *despertely trying to think of reasons my doctor would think it is essential for me to have a tummy tuck* :D

It could have changed of course, but to my knowledge no, as it is considered un- Islamic to do purely cosmetic surgery. Some have surgeons for "essential" surgery, burns vicitims, reconstruction, cleft palate repair etc. If any surgery was considered essential rather than purely cosmetic then they would. I do know of one were they had good western plastic surgeons who persuauded the hospital to let them operate on the staff otherwise they would be in danger of losing their skills and would have to leave . The staff list was a long one as SOOO many people took advantage as it was all free! they stopped the free bit but not sure if they still do the cosmetic stuff. ETA To simplify - if essential yes if purely cosmetic, theoretically, no. Sorry not trying to make any assumptions about which category you are enquiring about as my post may look like that. <em>edited by Genie on 29/03/2012</em>

Lakeland sell extra racks for ovens, although it would only be one extra as they do not slide in but sit elevated off the floor of the oven. They are a size that would fit in virtually all ovens.

She's been vomitting and has loose stools now for 4 days - today is day 5. Took her to the doctors and he said to ride it out - that was 2 days ago. The issue is she's not getting any better and she's vomitting everything up, including water so I am worried that she's becoming dehydrated if nothing is staying in. I went online to see the signs of dehydration but I really can't tell. Despite the doctors advice, if you were in my shoes would you take her to hospital? I suppose I wouldn't be worried if she were keeping liquids down but she isn't.... edited by xmasbaby on 13/03/2012 You could look for signs of lethargy, lack of interest in surroundings etc but basically don't wase time doing that. Either go back to the doctor or to a good hospital where a paediatrician will see her in the ER. Dehydration in young children can be very dangerous. <em>edited by Genie on 13/03/2012</em>

I am curious, can anyone tell me what is special about red velvet cake? I ask because I have never tried it and everyone seems to rave about it (not just on here) Looking at the recipe it appears to be a chocolate sponge that is red or is there something that is special about it that I am missing? genuinely interested to know - thanks! The few times I've tried it, it's somewhere between the rich moisture of a mud cake, but light in texture like a sponge. Nothing to write home about though. ;) Thanks Green-ish. As I only have cake about once a year I will cross it off my list of "hmm should I have some of that?" No offence to those who love it. ;)

..but not with money :( Hubby just came home with the ID cards. I now have (for me and the kids) 3 sets of ID cards 3 sets of medical Insurance cards 2 Hospital cards 2 fun City cards 1 Magic Planet card 2 driving licences 1 MMI card 1 loyalty card (pet food shop) + bank cards! Mine is full like that too but for different reasons. Nearly had a heart attack when I lost my purse and realised all that would be lost too - worse than losing the money. I now have a seperate card holder with some cards in that and some in the purse, so if I lose one it will not be too bad.

I love all products by Redken.Body Full seems to be my favorite shampoo and conditioner.Of course it depends on the hair type, but anyway can't go wrong with Redken I second this. I have been using this for about 6 months on the recommendation of my hairdresser and it has made a big difference to my hair. It now looks salon styled everytime I wash and blowdry it and is really shiny and managable. <em>edited by Genie on 26/02/2012</em>

Dubai Cat, Cobone are doing an offer today for upper lip (99Dhs per session) thought I'd let you know ;) they have regular offers so no hurry ;) it says for men & women ( though why would men want it done?) I had a male friend who had it done as he had very sensitive skin and every time he shaved came out in a terrible rash no matter what products / razor he used, he also found shaving painful. Besides which he was not bothered about looking too manly...

We called one from JLT last week and of course it never turned up. When we rang the operator he said we are still trying to send one to you!! The irony of that was that we could see hundreds of them all with their lights on sailing past other buildings. When we informed him of this he just laughed??? I used to have this problem on a Thurs evening. The operators saying no taxis available but when you go out lots available on the street. I complained to the RTA about it and they said that it is because only 2 of the taxi companies (different coloured roofs,ID's) are on their booking system, the rest are not so even if they are in your area cannot be booked through the system. That is why the ones you can prebook are so scarse at peak times.

Yes it is. I quite often dye things, usually black clothes that seem to fade to a dull shade here quickly. I also dyed a mid- brown skirt to a rich chocolate brown. It is easy - just get one of the washing machine dylon dyes, stick it in the machine with a load of salt and follow the instructions. I have never had anything shrink on me as you dye at a cool temp. BTW you cannot dye anything white, just go for a darker/richer shade and you should be fine. I find the dyes in Magrudys, Spinneys and Al Maya supermarkets. Thanks so much, it sounds so easy, can't believe i didn't even know if it was possible!! Will have a trip to Spinneys tomorrow! You will find the dyes in the laundry section. Good luck!

Another scam?! We should have a sticky thread for all the scams in Dubai. This one has been going around for a few years Appletiser :( First time I have heard of this one. Me too. Have heard of the ones where they tell you that you have won money which in order to receive you need to send them phone credit - even had those calls - but this one is new one to me. Mind you anyone who phones up out of the blue telling me I've won lots of money gets very short shrift from me.

Or do you mean to avoid hoardes of children? Nothing wrong with that btw as I had heard about this brunch h but wouldn't go if there were loads of kids there. Yes I do.. Horses for courses and all that. I am very glad that there are places where children can run around freely, get their faces painted and be entertained by a clown etc.It is just that I prefer something with a bit more of a sophisticated ambience and I would have thought that the Ivy would fall into that category. I cannot imagine the original in London having face painting activities etc. :) Edited for typos edited by Genie on 20/02/2012 Its a shame because we were so pleased to hear that there was another friday brunch available that was not a dreaded buffet, but then when we heard there were children's games and activities we decided to just forgo lunches and continue dinners... But are there? the question has not been answered... we are just speculating, although children under 10 eating for free is not a promising sign. <em>edited by Genie on 20/02/2012</em>

Complain. As you say soft openings are to iron out glitches so they need to hear your feedback. They should offer you a free meal to retest their services and see if they have improved. Why should you pay for things you did not get? though I think it happens regularly here. I often get food that does not bear much resemblance to what it says on the menu with items either missing or substituted - often to things I do not like! I always complain and get the item deducted from the bill (As I usually do not eat it).
