Is it good for ordering clothes as they do not weigh too much? TIA Sadly yes, as my credit card would tell you. The shipping is usually only 42 DHS but the cost of the clothes... I have forbidden myself to use it for at least 3 months. I am afraid for my card. I try the clothes on here and order them from the UK as they are over 30% more here! plus the sales are amazing back home. I shall try and be good though hehe - That was my mantra as well, but the problem is sooo many shops to choose from and a range of clothes not seen here...But good luck anyway ;)

So if i go onto say a clothing website which says they only deliver to an address in the UK can i get around it using Shop and Ship? If so, what delivery address would i use? Sorry to sound so dumb Thanks Once you open an account they will give you an address in the UK/ USA / China which you can use for delivery in those countries - Aramex pick it up from there (it is their address but with your customer number on it).

OP - with all due respect to other posters, you should be speaking to your doctor about this and getting all the pro's and cons of a normal delivery. It is good to express your fears here and hear of the experiences of other women, but you cannot compare your situation to anyone else's; and borderline GD is not comparable to diagnosed GD. Just because you hear of others that have been fine in similar situations does not mean you will be and that would be false reassuarance. An informed opinion is based on medical fact and not anecdotal evidence. There are so many variables that will determine whether it is medically advisable to have a CS including the GD, your age, reason for your previous CS, your size +pelvic girdle diameter, the polyhydramnious as well as the fetal weight and many other factors that make up the biophysical profile. Your doctor will be the only one in possesion of all these facts and has presumably made a decision based on these facts. Having looked after many macrosomic babies born to women with GD and attended their deliveries I can tell you that there are many complications. These range from just being large, hairy and sleepy to having dangerously abnormal blood sugars or many other complications due to injury during delivery, from shoulder dystocia to being stuck in the birth canal. That does not mean that you will have any of this complications nor can you assume you will be free of them. Your doctor should be able to tell you your risk having weighed up all the factors and taken their own experience of managing 100's of these pregnancies into consideration. My experience is that it is fairly normal if the risk is moderate to suggest a CS a 38 weeks in order to avoid them. In fact 38 weeks is the cut off for elective CS when they are performed due to any risk factors for all sorts of conditions in order to prevent an unplanned SVD. The only one who can give you all the information about your particular situation is your doctor who has all the facts. Speak to them and find out what your risks are and get a second opinion if necessary. ETA - of course I have seen many GD babies who have delivered normally and been fine. The point I am trying to get across is to make your decision based on knowing [b'>all [/b'>of the facts about GD deliveries after discusing your risk factors with your doctor, rather than relying on anecdotal evidence. edited by Genie on 09/02/2012

I have never seen it here but I did buy spring greens last night in Waitrose - I was delighted as I love them, have never seen them here and always miss the season for it when I go back home. The are classified in the same group as kale. Young cabbage - dark green & leafy not to be confused with spring cabbages or savoy cabbage).

If it gets to the point where these dogs need new owners, we will in all likelihood take them - we're looking at the mo, live by the beach and are far more responsible with our pets than this turd of an owner. I don't know how you would contact me as I just read:never post and I am not sure how contact details work but [email protected] is where you'll find me if a situation with the dogs transpires and they need homes (I do photos for k9 friends calender and love doggies, especially beagles!) edit: and I don't think reporting them is harsh although it is a difficult predicament - don't envy your decision but whatever is best for the beagles even if it is the difficult thing to do has to be the right thing. This is why I never drink the tap water or use it for cooking here. I know it is perfectly safe when it leaves the source but it is what happens to it in the water tanks here that worries me, especially in the summer when the water is heated to the perfect bacteria growing temp. The tanks in my building were cleaned this year... that is the first time they have been done in the 5 years I have lived there, a scary thought.

We have broken the glass jug in our cafetiere AGAIN. Does anyone know where I can get an 8-cup replacement, that is the glass jug rather than the whole thing. This happened to me and I could not find a replacment here. What I ended up doing was buying a cheap one from C4 - the ones with the plasticy frame rather than the chrome one- and just using the glass. It is pyrex glass and the right size etc. I just threw the plastic frame away.

Over the years I have had several friends who have left, leaving their car behind to be sold for them. There was not a problem, although I think they transferred the ownnership first to the friend selling it for them (obvioulsy someone they trusted!) They all did, however, own the cars. I am not sure if you would be able to do this if the car in question has an outstanding loan on it.

In the Phillipines a maid earns between 3000 - 5000 pesos a month, dependent on the type of work required. That is [b'>250 - 420 DIRHAMS [/b'>a month. No wonder then that some will work happily for 800 AED. Check it out http://www.philippinesinsider.com/expat-life/finding-the-right-maid/ In Australia they would earn minimum AU$2525 / 9345dhs. But Australian salaries are not relevant to Dubai. And neither are salaries in the Phillipines. I disagree. Of course they are relevant - most people's salaries here compared to salaries in their home countries are relevant, whether they are a maid or a CEO, after all that is why the majority of expats are here, because they can earn more than in their own country. To say it is not relevant seems ridiculous, quite frankly, as this is the main reason expats work here. Of course there are those, I include myself in this category, who do not earn a lot more here but are here for other reasons and there are those whose company have moved them here, but I would say they are in the minority. Just look at the number of posters on this board who dislike living here but stay for the money. For most expats working out the comparative salary they can earn here is the first thing they do when they consider a move to the UAE. All I was pointing out is that may be a reason why some happily work for 700 -800 DHS as it is 3-4 times what they would earn as a maid at home- unless of course you [b'>assumed[/b'> I was saying that is all they should be paid? which if you read my post I did not. ETA - and I do not know of any Australians who come here to work as maids - do you? edited by Genie on 17/01/2012 edited by Genie on 17/01/2012 Not sure why Australian's working as maids in Dubai is relevant to this discussion about salaries for phillipino's working as maids? The amount I gave was what a phillipino would make as a miad in Australia. Not what an Australian would make (actually they would both make the same amount regardless of nationality). But now that you mention it - I DO know Australian/Western [i'>nannies[/i'> over here who earn the same or above rates of the Australian one I quoted. But I still don't see how that is relevant to the discussion of phillipino salaries in Dubai (aside from the fact I dislike the way salary here is based upon nationality). The point was that - Dubai is not the Phillipines. Dubai is not Australia. It is as pointless to compare Dubai salaries to other countries as it is to compare one maid salary to another when their entire situation, experience, package is completely different. The minimum that has been set in Dubai is 1400. It is pointless to argue that people will happily work for less, or people work for a fraction of it in their home counties. Regardless of whether 800aed is more or less than other countries - The law here is 1400aed minimum and 800aed is illegal. Its as helpful to point out that 800aed is a good deal compared to Phillipines as it is to say 1400aed is a terrible deal compared to Australia. It is Dubai - and you have to pay 1400aed whether they would be happy with less or not. I still disagree; for the majority of expats - but especially the lower paid ones - the salary they earn here compared to what they would earn at home is the reason they are here in the first place. Just today in The National there is a story about a guy from Bangladesh who says he is the happiest person in the world becuase he wil earn upt to 2000 AED a month which is what he would earn in A YEAR in Bangladesh. Ask him if it is relevant. And the 1400 AED is not the law - it is what the Phillipine Goverment require their Nationals to be paid as a minumum - but they cannot stipulate the law in the UAE. You seem to be conflicting. You feel it is relevant that a maid would be paid a certain amount in the Phillipines when determining how much you pay her here. But you then think the Phillipino government requires on salary for its nationals is completely irrelevant. ETA: The fact that the 1400aed minimum is coming from Phillipines and NOT Dubai, would make it more relevant to what is acceptable in their country - not less edited by SlobberKnocker on 17/01/2012 SIGH- My point has always been from the start that is why some maids accept 800 - because compared to their home countries it is far more than they could earn there. Not that they should be paid that. Nor did I say that the Phillipines Govt requirements are irrelevant -please don't write things that I did not say. You seem to assume a lot as you are telling me what I "feel" and "think". You said 1400 was the LAW - I was merely pointing out that it is not the law here - hence why some people are able to pay what they want and some maids accept it. ETA - I see you have written another post to me but I am not going to even read it. I have not posted on here to get into a slanging match with you. My only pont all along has been that many expats work here because they earn far more here than in their home countries that is the only opinion I have voiced. I have said othing about the fairness or equality of the situation or said that the Phillipines govt is irrelevant. The rest you have "put in my mouth" so to speak - and accredited opinions, feelings and thoughts to me which I have not expressed. edited by Genie on 17/01/2012

Ginnee - do not let anyone underestimate the effects of insommnia, it can cause all sorts of things from physical illness to depression, anxiety and stress. Google it on a reputable medical site and show your husband. I strongly recommend that you seek medical help - taking the kind of antihistamines that make you drowsy can leave you feeling hungover and less able to cope the next day. I know a lot of posters here say that you cannot be prescribed sleeping tablets here, but that is not my experience, I have had them (for a bout of insommnia) and I know of several others who have too. You may find that just taking them for two or three nights is enough to break the cycle and allow you to get back into the rythm of sleeping at night. My expereince is to avoid something like xanax - too heavy left me feeling like I was drugged the next day. I was then given xopiclone - which was excellent - I fell alseep in 30 mins, slept for 8 hours and woke up totally fresh the next day. In fact I only needed it for 2 nights to break the cycle. What you need most is a sympathetic doctor who will listen to you and help you. There were one or two I would have suggested but they have sadly left, Hopefully someone will be able to suggest someone. Edited after reading your post re no insurance. I recently purchased in Life Pharmacy some very good herbal tablets for sleep - made by solgar. I think they were called sweetest dreams of something - it is worth looking at them, they have an interesting ingredient edited by Genie on 16/01/2012

Arabian Keys - 055 758 2123. Used earlier today with excellent service. 250Dhs is correct and that includes 5 laser cut keys and a german lock. Not quite the same as a Satwa lock but I guess there is always a choice! I always buy the good deadlock bolts not the flimsy ones - and they are only 30dhs or so, they come with several spare keys and I have never had a problem with the locks or the keys... Might set myself up as a locksmith on the side at those prices :D

I see recommendations for Arabian Keys - they were actually the company sent out by RSA when my dh locked us out of the car and he was very good...has anyone used recently and is the number working? any other recommendations, please as want to get a new lock for the maid's room as there is only one key and that spells DISASTER! TIA Can't you just get a new key cut? you can just go and get a new barrel and put it in very easy. I second this - I do it every time I move - I change the locks on the doors myself. All you have to do is unscrew the retaining screw underneath the barrel, put a new barrel in and reinsert the screw. It is a 2 minute job, locks cost about 30 DHS from hardware stores.

Thank you! All this help is making me teary eyed. No help that I'm mad at myself and hormonal. Great tips on the gifts, thanks all. Might go the voucher way to be honest, though its a bit impersonal, its what I love receiving :). Will get my husband to do a Spinneys run. And maybe do a trimmed down version of my original ambitious menu. Looks like most places are the whole deal. Will make a few calls based on the links and see if they can do individual sides and starters. One more question, anyone know where I can get the really small pre baked tart cases? That might be an easy one if I get help to do a few fillings. Marks and spencers

Know it won't help your cause right now but another suggestion from Lakeland is their "poachpod's". It's a silicon mould that you pop your egg into then float in a pot of simmering water...perfect every time, luv mine! funny that, I got no luck at all out of these. Each to their own I suppose! I did try many times, and after going on Lakelands review site, I realised I was not alone. We got these as well but they are not very good..like the sound of the little packets though BUT the microwave one is perfect! I really struggled with the poach pods when I first used them - they kept tipping over or getting water logged. I now have worked out how to use them... put them in a saucepan that is just big enough so that they sit snugly side by side and have no room to float about and only use about an inch and a half of water - just enough so that they do not sit on the bottom of the pan but not enough for them to float about or tip over in. Now works perfectly every time.

PS -I also have a BIL who does this to me - talk about history repeating itself- he tries to make me very uncomfortable when I stay there as basically he is jealous of anyone who spends time with my sister - and her and I are very close. We spend a lot of time out of the house, go away for short breaks together etc and when I am in the house with him and he behaves like that I just ignore the behavior (although insde I am fuming) as I do not want to cause a problem. So I know how it feels to be treated like that as well. There seems to be a lot of jealous childish men around who behave this!

I am sorry you are having a hard time. Really as you say he will be fine when they are gone it is just manipulative behavior rather than caused by the stress of his job etc. Is there a history of your parents treating him badly? If not then they do not deserve to be made to feel uncomfortable whilst they are guests in YOUR home. Nothing worse when you are a guest - especially for 2 weeks. As you have said this is a pattern of behavoir with him you need to change the way you handle it. In my experience people do not change bad behavior unless there are consequences for their behavior. Only you know what consequences you can enact that would maybe make him think twice about behaving like this. In the meantime keep your parents out of his moody, badly behaved way and take them somewhere nice for the day without him. Hugs to you - I can remember how this feels - my father kept this up until we well into our 20's (when my mother finally divorced him0

No but I had a father like that. Every Christmas (or other time) my mother's famil visited he would behave like that and make it miserable for everyone. Of course when his family visited he was totally different - I would not mind but 9 times out of 10 we would have his parents and only rarely my mum's family. I would say take him to one side and give him an earful. He is behaving like a child and a manipulative bully. Warn him that if he does not cut it out you will show him what really bad and rude behavior is next time you either visit his family or they visit you. Soemtimes you have to fight fire with fire as reason and asking nicely does not work(you already spoke with him in the summer). Failing that just take off somewhere nice everytime with your family when he is home - tell him you have no intention of letting him ruin xmas and their holiday and unless he gets his act together he is not welcome to join you.

Poor you! there have been a few warnings on here about that company both this year and last year - if you search you may find the threads. I hope you get your money back - as the police are involved you may have better luck than other people have had with them and I would not hestitate to use them if needed. edited by Genie on 21/12/2011

Oh well - I can just picture it then... HB empties out 'fridge and very carefully and gently lays yule log on floor behind the open 'fridge door Dogs immediatley smell a treat, sneak over quietly, pick up yule log and slink off to devour in a dark corner whilst HB's head in deep inside the veggie crisper.. HB finishes cleaning, goes to get yule log and is shocked to find it gone.. Horrified HB cleans up crumbs, washes plate, puts it away and hopes madam does not notice OR something very similar :D

i find definitely one of those words i really have to think about how to spell, along with professional. and as for wierd i don't even know how to spell that - seriously - is it weird or wierd?! weird - it is one of those irregular (weird :) ) ones that does not follow the usual rule of "i" before "e" except after "c'

Sometimes I think so as some of the things that have gone missing defy explanation - when I try and explain it to friends they think I am mad. Other things I can see that I MIGHT have accidently thrown away... JS - I think as you do not live alone someone who really fancied your chocolate yule log (very tempting) is the answer rather than you losing it :)

To the UK or from the UK? The strangest thing to the UK was when my brother was here recently on a business trip and bought back a huge container of Ravis Dhal for a friend who begged him to ( they both lived here in the 80's early 90's and Ravi's was a regular feature) I bought the largest tupperware container I could find, Ravis filled it with Dhal, and then we sealed it up with duct tape and several layers of plastic bags - it stayed intact but his suitcase reeked to high heaven - his friend was delighted though. :) Edited to remove my miscellaneous apostrophes after being reminded by the should have, would have, could have thead :D edited by Genie on 13/12/2011

Basic health insurance is included. I forgot to say that. Isn't is mandatory in the UAE? The reason a car is necessary is that the work is in and out around the UAE, not based solely in Dubai where public transport is enough. The estimated cost of 1,000/month is assuming the total cost around 2,000 is split with another person (which is an option for the person in question). The reason there is not more offered by the company is because this is a position that is part of an environmental project funded by a grant, so the budget is limited. It is looking like it would not be possible without at least a slight increase in salary to make living comfortable and not barely scraping by. Also, 700 a month on food seems amazing to me! I try to live frugally when it comes to food expenses and I estimate its around 10 AED per meal at home, which is where I got 1000/month (30 a day, 900 a month plus an extra 100). And do you never ever eat out? I suppose the anwser may be that I do not buy meat (don't eat it) and very rarely fresh fruit - as over the years I have gone off it after buying so much tasteless cr*p here.(I do buy M&S frozen fruit though for smoothies etc) I do buy lots of veg and salads and I cook in bulk because I am too lazy/ tired to cook for myself everyday -so will eat the same thing for 3 or 4 days on the run. As I am a vegetarain I cook everthing from scratch as very little in the way of frozen meals etc is available. I have forced myself to get out of the habit of buying too much food and then throwing it away when it has rotted or expired. I do eat out occasionally and but that counts as a treat not part of my basic budget. PS and this is because it is just how I live not because I am forced because I cannot afford it. I have to say that some of the sums people say they spend on basic food shopping here makes my eyes water!;) edited by Genie on 13/12/2011

3,000 one flight over ? startup costs (furniture/house stuff, drivers license/other paperwork fees not covered by company) 2,500 rent /month ? utilities/month 1,000 rental car + gas + salik /month (if costs split with 1 other person) 1,000 food/month (minimum - no eating out) What other necessities am I probably missing...? Again this is not for me. Looking to convince overseas people to come over for this package, trying to see the reality in it - is it enough for someone to move here. Thanks for your help! I don't think it is possible to rent a car for 1000 a month - the cheapest I found was with decent insurance was 1800. But then again why would they need a car - public transport is good and cheap as are taxi's if there was the odd occasion when one was needed. As a 20 year old living in a city public transport should be fine. I lived in cities in my 20's and never owned a car. ETA - I live alone in a 2 bedroomed apartment - my DEWA is between 100 - 150 per month (without housing fee) and my food costs are around 700 a month - and that includes being extravagant with imported things like good coffee and cheese and organic soy milk expensive yoghurts etc etc . It would be cheaper if I lived on the basics. edited by Genie on 13/12/2011

They advise that you may need the next size up when you buy the sandals so possibly the same applies to boots. I always buy the next size up when buying boots to allow room for socks. I always think that the next size up with boots does not matter as they will not slip off and a style like the fit flop ones should not rub either.

There are haberdashery stores on the main materials street in Satwa - there is one just up from Regal textiles. There is also that craft type shop in the pink shopping centre on Beach road (can't think of it's name) They sell buttons and trimmings and material - although I think the material is more cotton for crafting than blingy. ETA the ones in Satwa have loads of bling :) edited by Genie on 12/12/2011

I have never been able to understand this scam, surely anyone spending 5k would want to try the goods on! I won't even buy a 50 dhs T shirt without. Hi, After meeting with them at the car park, they went into the mall and he tried them on in Ibn Battuta. He liked them. He really struggles to find suits that he likes so he thought it was a good deal. You know if he likes them and he thinks he paid a fair price for them then has he really been ripped off? unless of course the quality is shocking and they fall to bits - but if they were that bad it would have been obvious when he tried them on. So unless he paid over the odds that he would normally buy two suits for thinking that they were designer and he thinks he paid a fair price at the time for the quality and he likes the design and fit then what is in a name?
