Arch, this is wrong when applied to Iranians, they have national pride inbuilt, no matter if they are 10 generations down the line, they will never say they are from somewhere else, even if they have lived there for 40 years or so... edited by Alismum on 12/10/2011 So a person born to Iranian immigrants in the US will say they are Iranians and not Americans when they grow up and are asked "where are you from" ? edited by Arch on 12/10/2011 Most probably yes. In Canada and the US, its very usual to hear the hyphenated Iranian-American, Iranian-Canadian, Indian-Canadian, Chinese-Canadian.... and so on..... I can speak for the Iranians. The reason they will say "from Iran", is because the majority of Iranians are quite "in touch" with their culture and heritage. It doesn't matter where they are born and where they live. They speak persian, have persian names, listen and dance to iranian music, eat iranian food, celebrate the iranian new year, follow iranian politics and almost always have some family back in Iran. And that makes them Iranian. Is that because they feel they are refugees from their homeland? SM, I don't know if you are deliberately trying to offend by that comment. But I am not offended. Maybe many still do feel like refugees, I don't know. I was never a refugee, although are hometown was war struck. My father migrated to Canada as an entrepreneur. If one feeling connected to their roots and heritage despite being born and growing up in another country, make them a refugee; then I guess most iranians in the West are refugees. Certainly not intending to offend. Asking out of curiosity and my scant knowledge about political changes that took place in Iran. I know that many had to leave because of that , didn't they but didn't want to? SM, I think there's a political element to it as well. I have met loads of second generation Iranians, and they have a deep national/cultural heritage, despite living all their lives in their adopted country... and they have never referred to themselves as British or American, perhaps IranianAmerican or Persian. [b'> Some Iranian parents would be mortified if their kids said they were British, it would be blasphemy (for political reasons[/b'>). ETA, before the Brits jump on me for that last statement, I am British born and bred and have a posh Scunthorpe accent . ;) Sorry but that raises the question - then why on earth are they living there / bringing their kids up there if they would consider it blasphemous to be from there??

It's a bit sad that people feel they are being judged by their country of origin. It seems that some people have a bit of sensitivity about /aversion to where they come from. It almost seems as if the "prejudice" towards their country is in their own eyes as opposed to that of the person asking the question? People chat I think because they want to - not because it is an Inquisition and it is a base point of reference where people say things like "Oh I went there on holiday" or "Really what was it like living there?"....it is such a shame to live your life being suspicious of people because of this... edited by spongemonkey on 12/10/2011 I agree. I often get asked this especially by taxi drivers. I answer then turn it around and ask them where they are from and we usually end up having a pleasant conversation about their country, my country Dubai etc . I think it depends on who you are talking to - if it's one of your peers and you are chatting in a social environment it's fine - when a stranger on the street, taxi driver, shop assistant etc asks it, it's just damn right nosey and non of their business. I see it as quite the opposite. We live in a country where most people are from other countries and it is quite natural for them to ask that. It is irrelevant to me whether they are a taxi driver or someone who works in a shop. In fact have often been asked this by shop assistants. How boring must it be for some of these people who have to serve some hideous people all day - a little bit of chit chat for them... I agree. I get asked this question virtually everytime I get in a taxi; I answer then turn it around and ask them where they are from and always end up having a pleasant conversation about their country, my country, Dubai etc. I see nothing wrong with it and am never offended. I could answer answer by saying My father is from country A my Mother is from country B and I was born in country C but have now lived away from it for half my life.. But I am sure they are not interested in a potted version of my family history just as if I ask the question I am not asking for a breakdown of someones family tree. I think there is no need to make it so complicated - it is just a simple conversation starter for most people.

I have lived here over 20 years and have never used the tap water for drinking / cooking/ ice cubes. When I first came here the compound thatI lived on used to double chlorinate the water tanks - tap water smelt just like the swimming pool. Then over the years I have seen enough water tanks and their contents to put me right off.. dead birds etc to say nothing of the pipes. The story in the paper a few weeks back of the poor dead man in the water tank for 3 days - unbeknowst to the building residents who kept on drinking and cooking with the water just confirmed it all for me. Never will I drink the tap water here no mater how "safe" it is. I also reckon that if the desalinated water does such terrible things to our hair what effect does it have when we drink it as well? ETA and what about the Legionnaires baccilli that they have found here in water systems? edited by Genie on 09/10/2011

Do you mean the ones that plug into the electrical socket and then dispense a repellent a bit like some of the room fresheners? If so I know my local corner shop has stock of these - so it may be worth trying the smaller groceries and supermarkets

There was a thread earlier today called falling hair or something similar. Anyhow a link was posted to a site on desalinated water which was very interesting. It explained how the chlorine coats the scalp and leaves the hair flat etc Also the silica in the air in desert environments does the same.. I suppose you could try the same remedies as the ones for falling hair - invest in a shower filter, use bottled water to rinse etc and see if it makes a difference. It did to mine which before was really flat and lifeless. Oh and think about removing and cleaning your shower head as a lot of gunk builds up in there. edited by Genie on 05/10/2011

There was a report on Sky News a few days ago about fake goods in China - they even go to the trouble of making fake eggs to sell -WTH?? Dont even want to think about what would be in them after the baby milk saga. Since that baby milk saga I have tried to avoid any food sourced from China but it is difficult. I bought some frozen fish is Spinneys - prawns -that to all intents and purposes were of Spanish origin - but when you read all the details on the label it is just repackaged in Spain - it's origin is China, which I only noticed after I bought them. When I defrosted them they stank to high heaven so went staright in the bin.

I remeber when I lived in Australia I found the cost of good quality clothes and shoes (and books!) so expensive. My brother lives there and finds the cost of the same things still really expensive compared to the UK. He and his wife now order clothes for themselves and the kids online from the UK as even with the postage he finds it cheaper than buying the same things there!

I can't say 100% that you will find one there, but the only shops that sell these kind of things are Jashanmal (Wafi / MOE) and Grand Stores - don't know where a Grand stores is in Dubai though - I have seen them in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain so sure they must have one here. Another outside guess is Salam studios whose home section also sells those kind of things. edited by Genie on 04/10/2011

maybe it's a superstition thing - some ppl believe black cats bring bad luck.. supposed to be bad luck if a black cat "crosses your path"....and w!tches' familiars are always depicted as black... How funny - Ihave always thought black cats were meant to be lucky and if they cross your path even more so! I remember when I was young and people used to give those silver horsehsoe things to brides for luck -some of them had black cats on! (used to see them in the card shops ) No wonder I have no luck - I am always happy to let a black cat cross my path :D

Np - they just want their money back it obviously he doesn't have it so he wants you to take responsibility for it..... unless you are willing to take this risk of owing the company 30K; i wouldn't sign it. No...he *would* have it if he gets his final gratuity (assuming it is more than 30k!) but by signing this it means that the company will get it back from OP instead so he will receive his full gratuity! Don't get your point.... I think BM means that he won't get his full gratuity, or if he's only been there a few months, HE will owe the company that money and not be released until it's paid back. I find all this talk of a gratuity a bit of red herring.. My understanding is that if you do not complete your first years contract you are not entiteld to a gratuity. You only get pro rata for part of a year once you have already completed a full year. I do feel some sympathy for his situation but I think his behavoir (insisting on the letter, going on vacation rather than finding a sublet) says he has no regard for the LL - he just wants out without any regard to his own responsibilities in the situation. edited by Genie on 22/09/2011

ladies, thank you so much. yes it is a complete zoo! staff have been really unhelpful - we went last week and the doctor wasn't even there, they had no medical records, got my friend's name wrong and confused, kept us waiting for two hours...etc etc etc. usual practice i know in so many parts of life in this region but as i'm sure you can appreciate, not what you want when you are seriously ill and scared out of your mind. any more updates gratefully received! May I suggest that you complain to the patient relations department or administration? I know for a fact that they would want this feedback and act on it - ie look at why this is happening.

iPhone 5 (or 4s) should be coming out mid October. Not sure when it will arrive in the UAE though! iPad 3 should come out in March so I would hold off Genie until then. If you get the iPad 2 now it will only be a novelty for another 6 months before it gets replaced. My moto when it comes to Apple products is: buy it within 3 months of launch date otherwise you are not getting your money's worth. Why? Because apple products do not become cheaper with time until they are replaced by a newer version... Thanks - good to know

Anyone know when Iphone 5 is coming out? Soon is the rumour - when I was rading some tech news about it. Now that I will definitely order, I have been waiting for it and no need to justify as I am still on my very old (+6years) scruffy, cheap, Nokia which refuses to break no matter how many times I drop it. I suppose an advantage of the store is that they will have stock!

My puppy once managed to sneak my purse out of by bag, hide under a chair, open it and chew all the money that was in it - in the days when I was a very impoverished young nurse. I dont know if it will be too much of a problem for you. My name is wrong on my visa; first they put the wrong visa in - the expired one again- then when I sent to be changed it came back with my name wrong (spelling but could be taken as a different name). By this time I was fed up so did not bother telling them. That was January last year and since then I have been through immigration (out then back in ) about 20 times and no-one has said a thing - even though it does not match my passport name. As the ID card is not as important as the visa and you use it for so little - I can't see that it will be a big deal.

Sadly, some men just don't do committment no matter how long they have to decide. Some just want the fun side and none of the responsibilities of a growing relationship and will run if they feel that the woman is getting too "serious" *ahem* George Clooney? :) Now you see he is just too good for one woman to keep him all to herself - that would be unfair. He needs to be shared around - it's almost a duty. My turn next

Hi I'd like to attend the meeting on Sunday for EW but unsure how to get to Dusit Thani from Arabian Ranches, new here - sorry to gate crash the thread! thanks Sorry I do know where the Dusit is but have not got a clue about AR having never been there. basically the Dusit is on SZR right next to Defence R/A (interchange 1) It is infront of the Murooj Rotana, acroos the road from Dubai Mall. If you are on a road that takes you on to the business bay Dubai Mall road then you would exit just before interchange 1 onto SZR following signs for sharjah. The Dusit would be immediatley on your right and you would follow the directions I gave below - from the interchange 1 bit. If you are coming from the Garhoud area then you would go onto SZR and follow the signs for Abu Dhabi until interchange 1. At interchange 1 do a U turn onto the other side of SZR and follow the directions below. Sorry- I do not know which road you would take from AR!

Al Ghazal Taxis (the Al Ain Branch iof the Abu Dhabi company) operates a small bus between Al Ain and Dubai - costs about 30dhs. Some of my friends that live in Al Ain use it. You need to telphone the Al Ain Branch for times etc. Unless of course you mean that this is the one that no longer operates - in which case maybe ring the branch and ask for a taxi that is going back to Al Ain from Dubai. I know they do a lot of airport runs and they will take passengers from Dubai to Al Ain at a cheaper price rather than go back with an empty car - it is still expensive though.

You could be low on magnesium. Lack of magnesium is responsible for the smooth muscle spasm which causes tics and cramps. I was having terrible foot and leg cramps for months and also occasional eyelid twitching. Magnesuim citrate twice a day cured it.

Thing is, the other day i was shifting my parrot into his new cage, and as he was climbing in he fell of his new perch and let out a nano-second squeal...three minutes later, my neighbour (four kids, two maids, one of the loudest in that wing), knocks on my door and says "could you please not let that squeal happen again, we're all trying to sleep before playtime). It was 4pm in the afternoon. An hour before their prolonged "squealing" sessions. I was gobsmacked. I didn't even have time to react. My parrot squealed INSIDE, and it was barely a second long. Please -stop - you are doing terrible things to my blood pressure! ;) I think it is time you stopped being polite/ passive and took some action with them. Totally unacceptable - all of it. Do you pay less rent than the ones with children? I don't think so. you are entitled to peace and privacy in your home. Tell the maids to move their b**ts sharpish. Complain to the building management about the rest. Did your lease say BTW the public corridors will be a playground during the hours of 8-11 etc? I am sure you would not have moved in if it had. I beleive in live and let live and kids need somewhere to play but there are limits. I had something similar. The maids and kids from the [b'>neighbouring[/b'> buildings were using the foyer of our building as a playground - constantly tripping over bikes / being run into by bikes and trikes / slipping on spilled food etc. I complained to the managemenet and it stopped the next day.

It is very straightforward Go straight down SZR towards Burj Khalifa. when you pass BK you will go under defence R/A (interchange one). Stay in the inside lane and take the next exit right - after Financial towers metro station and just before Emirates Towers metro station - as you exit keep in the right hand lane it splits into 2) - it curves around to the rt and then follow that service road straight up to the end where the Dusit is. There is an easier way taking an exit on interchange one that leads to the back of the Dusit - but frankly everyday they exits are closed / opened at the moment - it is a constant source of entertainment driving round there as you never know if the exit will be open - so I advise the first route. Hope this is not too late

Lucky you - I love Railay but have not been for about 6 years. When I was there the array of accomadation was very good; everthing from 4* hotels to budget accomodation including wonderful Thai villas at the far end of sunset beach. I have just googled Railay hotels and a lot of hotels came up - perhaps that is your best bet. When I stayed there this is what I did and booked my accomadation direct online. I was not disapointed - it was a really lovely place - as it Railay. I just hope they have not developed it more since then. So nice to go somewhere with no roads or cars and longboat being the only way to get there :)
