Thanx genie, i think she does have an appt next week, but she was also asking for personal recommendations. Think she just needs some reassurances as the move and transition has been quite hard The Royal Melbourne Childrens Hospital is a centre of excellence, very well known and regarded. I know people who have worked there and my niece has been treated there. Sorry don't know any ENT's but I am sure they would only employ highly experienced docs, she is probably going to the best place.

The one in the Wafi closed down a few months back. A guy in the jewellers next door said that they had closed all their shops here - though I don't know that they had any others.

I bought oven hood filters from Lakeland in MCC. Sorry I don't remember the brand, it looked similar to the one already in the hood, I just cut it to size and it has worked fine. I seem to remember that they had more than one brand - perhaps you could give them a call.

I travel quite extensivley international. It is basically a matter of discipline and manage expectations.... a few people, my [b'>wife,[/b'> my secretary and my boss know the schedule and my hotel/emergency number/home number....and that's where they can call when it is URGENT !! The rest has to wait till the next day....:-) Are you a man lenochka? I used to get these mystery calls all the time on both my work and personal phone. I never anwered them and eventually after several months they stopped. In my experience they only let the phone ring once, so I put the phones on silent and night and was never bothered by them again.

I am curious - I think a lot hinges on what you possibly did or did not say when you rang him as his reaction sounds like that of someone defending themselves. Did you tell him it was his fault and that he would have to pay? Did you imply - as you have in your post - that his actions were stupid? and then go on to list all the things that were broken becuase of his actions (is that why he call you a liar?) IF so then that would explain his reaction after doing something he thought helpful. I am not saying this is the case - only you know that but his words sound like someone defending them self from accusations. He is right - accidents do happen and most of them caused by unthinking actions- they are not deliberate. But I think you have bigger problems that a few smashed vases. The fact that household items are not a joint financial responsibility and you argue over who is responsible for paying should give you more to worry about than the breakages. ETA - Is your attitude also not contibuting to the arguement. You say that you are glad that you have a photo as "evidence". Come on - this is your home and your husband not a court of law! edited by Genie on 11/05/2011

I feel for you Chickchick. It can't be easy for either of you. I think that going away for a weekend would be a good idea. Maybe to a desert resort so you will have a very relaxing time. I wish you all the best and hope that your hubby soon realizes how much he is missing. It reminds me of a song: Hey, little girl, Comb your hair, fix your make-up. Soon he will open the door. Don't think because There's a ring on your finger, You needn't try any more For wives should always be lovers, too. Run to his arms the moment he comes home to you. I'm warning you. Day after day, There are girls at the office, And men will always be men. Don't send him off With your hair still in curlers. You may not see him again. For wives should always be lovers, too. Run to his arms the moment he comes home to you. He's almost here. Hey, little girl Better wear something pretty, something you'd wear to go to the city. And dim all the lights, Pour the wine, start the music. Time to get ready for love. Oh, time to get ready, Time to get ready, Time to get ready For love. Good grief. I can only suppose that a man wrote that little ditty.

You can order from strawberry.net. I am about to place my first order, the shipping is free and when you go online you can view the prices in Dirhams. I checked out the prices and compared to here I am saving 80-100 Dhs on each item! I found about it after seeing the site mentioned on several threads on here. This is on the Hong Kong site as it is the nearest to here according to the information I read on the different threads If you do a search you may find them - I say [i'>may[/i'> because I sometimes have trouble with the search function.

Calpol 6+ has 250 mg per 5ml so you have given 500mg. The dose of paracetamol, is 15mg per kg of weight regardless of age. The dose you have given would be suitable for a child who weighed between 33 - 34 kg, so possibly double the dose she should have. Best to check with the doctor.

It sounds like you are letting your heart rule your head on this, understandable but not always the wisest choice. Your heart also seems to be skewing your thinking on this. You talk about not wanting to go back to the UK because of crime rates - according to the UN 2010 report on crime, South Africa tops the world crime rates for murder, rape, kidnapping, minor and major assaults. The only ones it does not top the crime rate for is burgalry and car theft, but it is still pretty high - and these are the only 2 the UK comes close to SA in terms of numbers. My point is that your longing to be back in SA maybe stopping you from seeing things as they really are- and you may not like the reality of it if you back there. SA also has tax and there are plenty of lovely rural locations in the UK without the very high crime rate of SA. Your husband's statement of not finding work in SA also may be him not seeing things clearly - has he tried? If he has then he is being sensible about your finacial situation a serious consideration at any time but particulary with the current finacial climate. If not then he needs to look into it properly and not just dismiss the possibilty out of hand I think you both need to sit down and look at things as objectively as possible rather than just throwing things in to the ring that may not be true (crime / jobs)

so this is not the thread to announce that the car park there is finally finished and we no longer need to constantly drive in the direction opposite to the arrows marked on the floor? lol! That's what I thought too! I think it should be made into a Kyrpton factor type game: Third prize: If you find your way out in under 15 mins Second prize: If you find your way out in under 15 mins and on a road you actully want to be on. First Prize: If you find your way out in under 15 mins, on a road you actually want to be on and in the direction that you actully need to be going in. :D

Sorry not been on here for a few days. Thanks for the answers to my query, as I was really curious. I know that in all my work experience here in 20 years I have always worked under the use-it-or-lose-it-system for both flights and holidays. Seems that every sector has it's perks then! ;) I agree with Aryanwyn - I think local leave as a minimum is essential for anyone's physical and psychological well being, with return home even better. 2years is too long to be away from family; I know I did it once when I lived in Oz and really regretted it.

I am just curious about this - and not at all suggesting that it should be the case - but is there not a case to ask as to why the employer should have extra expense if the maid CHOOSES not to take her holiday? I understand that some employers would be delighted if their maid did not go on holiday and more than happy to pay the extra month, but this is not true for the OP I know if I chose not to take any holiday my employer would not pay me any extra and I would lose the holidays and my flight home if I did not take them in a contract year - I cannot carry them over. I suspect that this is the same for many employees here and genuinely wonder why it is different for maids? Is it because they are part of the household? I know my employer, and I myself as a manager, insist that employees take their allocated leave each year as someone who does not have any leave becomes very stressed and much less productive, especially living here IMO Can the OP not insist the maid takes her leave if that if what she wants? Not trying to stir the pot - just really curious about this.

A few nights ago in the middle of cooking I realised I did not have any oregano, called the local grocery to deliver: me- Can I have a jar of oregano please shop- HUH? me - slowly - a jar of o-r-e-g-a-a-h- n -o (using UK pronuciation) shop????? Personally I would not use a mobile service - did once and never again for me. Nothing to do with the standard or legality - i just dont enjoy the hairdressing experience. I find it bad enough going to a salon (although I do go regularly) but having to clean up the hair, have my hairwashed leaning over the front the sink and then move the chair around to get near to a electricity point that is not in the bedroom, find a mirror to sit in from of (I HAVE to see what they are doing) etc etc is just not worth the effort IMHO - although I can see why for SAHM with small kids it may be great. ETA - But when I asked her if she wanted a drink and she said "Yes a glass of red wine please" BEFORE she cut my hair was the biggest thing that put me off! - (this was no- one in Dubai BTW) edited by Genie on 04/05/2011

Since then, 3 weeks ago he hasn't made much effort unless I decide where I want to go and plan it. Just so frustrated. Then why don't you just take the bull by the horns and plan lots of activities - why wait for him to do it? You also quoted him as saying "If you want to go out you have to know where you want to go... So go pick something." Seems like he will do it if you make the effort of planning; nice if he suprised you with a plan but as it seems obvious he won't - just do it youself! Better than going off on your own in a huff. If he won't go along with any plan you have made for the day THEN go off by your self - for a loooong time - which would include spending lots of money. That should get his attention. ;) edited by Genie on 04/05/2011

Possibly of no use for this time, but keep some lavender oil in the house. It's one of the only essential oils you can use directly on the skin (I've trained in aromatherapy in a previous life), and if applied to a burn [b'>(only if the skin is NOT broken)[/b'> it will stop the burn from blistering and apart from a little soreness, it heals amazingly fast. As previously mentioned, with unbroken skin, get the area cool as quickly as possibly, generally under a running cold tap, and then apply. Hope it feels better soon! I second this - it was how aromatherapy was discovered - using lavender oil on a bad burn. I always keep some in the kitchen and it work so well. Takes the sting right out and stops any blistering or scarring. It also works great on sunburn, I mix it with some body lotion, used neat it is also the best thing I have found to stop the itch of mosquito bites.

Difficult call as spicyness is so subjective! What to one person is blow-your-head-off-hot will not register as being remotely spicy to someone else who prefers food with a "hotness" factor that is off the richter scale ;) I fall somwhere between the two and did not find them very spicy. Why don't you just open them and taste? if they are too hot for your palate you could always just rinse the sauce off. Ha fragglexx - great minds think alike edited by Genie on 03/05/2011

Could be the flight has "gone tech" - which means there is a technical fault with the aircraft, last time this happened to me I had a delay of 22 hours - not as bad as my brother, whose flight was delayed over 30 hours. Once it has gone over 4 hours they are supposed to get another aircraft. Which should be easy to do as the flight is from the Etihad hub. The reason for the long delays is when this happens at an overseas airport with no replacment aircraft readily available - and they never usually offer any explanation until it has become SO obvious that the flight is not going to leave..

Philly most of us come from countries where cancer treatment is not free. If I were in the US, my insurance would cover a small small portion of it, then the rest would be out of pocket. [b'>The UAE has NEVER offered free medical treatment for expats.[/b'> This is not true. It did for many years. I have nursed plenty of patients who benefited from this, including one premature baby born at 26 weeks to a family that were on holiday; his 3 month stay in NICU cost hundreds of thousands of Dirhams and the family were not charged one fil. That was only one of many similar cases, including many patients from MENA countries who came here specifically for free oncology care. This all started to change about 7-8 years ago.

Thanks Genie, that was easier than I thought. I just phoned the general RTA helpline and they actually have a department that deals with road hazards, so they are sending someone out to sort it. Somehow I expected it to be a much bigger drama than that! Good - glad you got it sorted. I find that the police / RTA / municipality are usually more responsive and helpful then people would imagine ;)

I don't see the harm in asking someone in the know how busy it gets rather than paying 150 dirhams or however much it is to go and find it packed. And for anyone else interested, the club is open from 7am to 10pm. I am looking out of my office window and watching a workman trying to clear a flooded road with a bobcat. He pushes the water up the road with the shovel thing then reverses back down the road... needless to say all the water flows back with him. Talk about an excercise in futility! Especially as it has started to rain again... Is this the big boy version of playing in puddles I wonder? ;) BTW this is on a narrow, single track, one way road - he reverses at speed without paying any attention to the oncoming traffic, in fact twice he nearly upended the thing whilst reversing in a wavy line.. Hi Muurtje, we don't call each other as he doesn't have roaming on his BB as he thought it was a waste of money, so it stays off while he's away. Originally he would use email and Skype to talk to me if away for more than a couple of days, but now every time he goes away he insists there's no net in the hotel or it's too expensive. I have asked politely and not so politely that he at least gets in touch once as to me it's important, but nothing's changed so far. I do miss him, i get lonely though i go out and do my own thing...and i don't understand why he doesn't feel the same way. He also comes back with loads of pics of the interesting places he goes with his colleagues in their time off, and i sort of think they must just be more interesting than me. Sorry i'm really moaning now! GA - If this were me I would make sure I was out for a very late girls night out (straight from work if he comes home during the day) when he got back. I should just add that some of them want long dresses, and some want short. Any ideas? If you are having difficulty trying to get dresses in a certain colour for BM's in two different countries why let them complicate it? You decide whether you want either short or long and tell them that's what you want. It is your day after all and you are having enough difficulty as it is. There are several bridal shops in Dubai - I know of one in Dubai mall and one in the Jumeriah Centre but there are others. How about ordering online from a well known brand like Pronuptia etc and they can be delivered to both places? edited by Genie on 24/03/2011

I am no expert either but there are several things that look wrong to me: "how best to manage matters such as this." Should surely be matter[b'>s[/b'> such as [b'>these[/b'> as matters is plural. Or it could read how best to manage this matter. "about these issues and others " might be better as " about this and other issues" Also agree with previous comments on punctuation etc There are other things that make me think this was written by someone whose first language is not English. edited by Genie on 24/03/2011 Edited for my own typos ha ha edited by Genie on 24/03/2011

Why iron? Put it in the dryer and straight back on the bed!! What? It would come out all creased to heck. Put one piece at a time in the dryer. The Duvet alone is ENORMOUS (225x225). I have exactly the same size duvet - I wash it myself and then send it out for ironing, One thing I have decided though is when I need new bedding and / or I have to iron them myself I will be throwing away the duvets and replacing them with blankets!

I find it sad that at times this is almost like a brainwashing on this site. Everyone trying to force those who don't like Dubai into a forced love. The relentless attack on those of us who don't like it is amazing. I think it works both way, no? There are ppl who hate Dubai and look at ppl who love Dubai as desperate, probably come from an awful country to begin with, materialistic as they chose to be here instead of with family back in their country, etc. Like I said, I neither love nor hate Dubai. [b'>The thing that I don't get it is ppl who hates it and had left and enjoying their life in their home or new country but still keep on coming to bash dubai. When my time come, I just bid goodbye to friends, leave and that's it. Like everywhere I had been to, somethings are good, somethings are not.[/b'>edited by blimey on 24/03/2011 *Like* and agree!
