. edited by WaxMuch on 22/03/2011 [color=#0000CC'>Can I ask if mineral powders make your skin look at all dull or dryor too matt? I never use powder as I find even the superfine ones with added ingredients to make your skin glow just make my complexion look too matt or dull (compared with just using foundation alone). I have heard a lot about mineral make up but the fact that it is powder puts me off. I think it depends on both one's age AND where one applies the powder. Me? Frankly, I'm approaching my mid-40s, so applying the powder too heavily around the eye area can make the very fine lines I have there more ... prominent. ;) But that's just me. And I think on a younger person, this would not be a problem. I certainly wouldn't discontinue using the powders because of just one little issue though, and with practice, it is just so easy and quick to apply, looks very natural [and most 'un'-powdery!'> and not dull at all. As Diamante pointed out below, removing the make-up isn't necessary either. There are -- I'm going to sound like an advertisement here!! -- [i'>allegedly[/i'> all sorts of good things in the Bare Minerals which actually improve your skin, and I would agree with that. And I really can't stress enough just how fantastic the coverage is; blemishes, freckles, redness, you name it, all disappear, leaving a really beautiful light look. That's the other thing: this stuff just feels so light, like you're not wearing a foundation at all. And I love that! :)[/color'>Many thanks WM - I think I will give it a try after reading that- especially as one of my biggest 'sins' is not taking make up off (blush) I think I might do as Diamante suggests and have a makeover done at Sephora edited by Genie on 22/03/2011

Bare Escentuals mineral makeup Ditto. Adore it. Used to use Chanel Vitalumiere but switched to Bare Escentuals last year, and it's proven a fantastic coverage in the Dubai humidity. Even when it feels like you're dripping like mad [!!'> the make-up stays perfect; it glows. I would advise going for the whole kit though; the base gel, then the powders and then the bare minerals 'top coat'. Makes for a longer-lasting look. ETA: The gel to use before applying the powders is called Prime Time, and the 'Illuminating Veil' is what I use to finish off. Looks gorgeous, a tiny bit sparkly, but not like you're about to hit a dance floor. :D . edited by WaxMuch on 22/03/2011 Can I ask if mineral powders make your skin look at all dull or dryor too matt? Yours is a common story. You will find just the threat of having to pay for damages will be enough to cure the problem without actually having to carry through on it. Accidents happen all the time and can't be helped but there is a difference between that and constant damage / misuse of items. I had a friend whose maid ruined every single item of new clothing my friend had bought herself after losing a lot of weight - until the maid was told she would have to pay the full price for the next ruined item. Overnight the boiling to bits/ shrinking/ burning with the iron stopped.

If your lips are dry and lick them you just make them worse, saliva contains digestive enzymes which irritate and dry out the skin (ever seen those kids with dry red areas of skin around their mouths from constantly licking their lips?) Licking just makes them more irritated and dry but it become like a viscious circle as the drier they get the more you feel the need to lick them! So stop licking your lips and try a really good lip product. I recommend boots intense moisturising lip cream - it is part of the protect and perfect range and only needs to be applied once in 24 hours to keep your lips really smooth - though you may need to apply more often at first if your lips are really dry.

I was there only one time about 2 years ago and spent the afternoon worrying about the kite surfers as some of them came in dangerously close. Not on purpose I would say - more a case of being blown off course or not being able to control the kite. Some of the swimmers looked close to getting landed on. This is the reason I have not been back since so don't know if it is still the same but I would say even if they have seperate sections for kiters and beach users there is always the danger of the unexpected gust / loss of control.

I can't get my head around asking a 100 people to a house warming never mind then asking them to pay. Why a 100 people? Are they all expected to bring a housewarming gift (as is the norm) ? Then they have to pay so that it has cost the hosts next to nothing and they get a 100 presents??? Or am I wrong? I hope so. I have to say that I have never come across such stingyness / freeloaders / users anywhere as I have in Dubai. It seems to attract them but this one really must come close to taking first prize. Look I haven't been to a house warming, but my initial thought is how many people actually take a gift? I automatically take beautiful flowers (at the least) when going to a friend for dinner. Don't know if I would actually go and get them a gift though - maybe I'm the socially numb one now? If I go to house warming, or even if a friend / relative moves to a new home I buy them a gift ... maybe it's me but I thought bringing a gift to a housewarming was the norm. I am happy to be corrected though - although I would still do it ;)

A very powerful advert is running on TV in the UK today to mark the 100th anniversary of International Womens Day and it contains some very sobering statistics. Women perform two thirds of the world's work but only receive 10% of the annual income and own 1% of the world's property Women make up almost 75% of illiterate adults A women dies because of pregnancy complications every 90 seconds 70 million girls are deprived of an education An estimated 60 million girls are sexually assualted on their way to school 1 in 4 women are vicitims of domestic violence Every week 2 women in the UK are killed by their current or former partners A sad and sobering list. The first statistic makes the Grameen foundation on the charity thread worth another look.

Then does this really count as true hospitality? My idea of true hospitality is that expects nothing in return -especially if it is done as a sacred duty. A story is told of an old man who came stumbling one night into a Bedouin camp, thread bare and exhausted. The people of the camp obviously knew him and greeted him warmly. A visitor to the camp wonders aloud why such a tattered old creature would be treated with such respect and affection. A Bedouin leader explains, “‘He is of the Bait Imani and famous.’ I asked, ‘What for?’ He responded, ‘His generosity.’ I said, ‘I should not have thought he owned anything to be generous with,’ and bin Kabina said, ‘He hasn’t now. He hasn’t got a single camel. He hasn’t even got a wife. His son, a fine boy, was killed two years ago by the Dahm. Once he was one of the richest men in the tribe, now he has nothing except a few goats.’ I asked, ‘What happened to his camels? Did the raiders take them, or did they die of disease?’ Bin Kabina answered, ‘No, generosity ruined him. No one ever came to his tent, but he killed a camel to feed them. By God, he is generous!’ I could hear the envy in his voice.”. [b'>There are also numerous stories of families selling the last of their possessions in order tofeed their guests[/b'>[/b'> [color=#000000'>As there are in many religious texts - in fact in all of the religions I know. However I do not see what this has got to do with generosity expected to be returned. I will leave it at that as I do not want this thread to turn into this religion is more generous than that etc - which is where you seem to be heading.[/color'> Edited because the quote thing gone mad edited by Genie on 08/03/2011

I fee like some people try to show off, something like, in my culture or social circles this is how we do it and clearly we are more generous and accomodating than you people. In reality, I am sure these same people, who are so out of touch with reality, probably treat their help like slaves with the lowest pay (as they are always the first to chastise westerners for spoiling them by paying them a decent salary) and expect everyone to cater to them and their kids, pick up after them and just thank our lucky stars to be around such greatness, class, culture and sophistication. Right. Dig a little deeper and you will find that many of these are novous riche that have no clue and if you knew who they really were or what they came from before making it big, ie: living in serious debt, you would understand why they feel such a need to prove how wealthy or sophisticated they are...really lame. There is a saying arabic which I love...rough translation so bear with me..."Dressed to nines and ready for a big night out, and your fridge is empty..." Probably the most outstanding feature of Arab customs is that of generous hospitality. To the Arabs, extending good hospitality is more than just an admirable thing to do--it is a matter of honor and also a sacred duty. Hospitality is shown regardless of personal cost [b'>and is expected to be returned[/b'>. Then does this really count as true hospitality? My idea of true hospitality is that expects nothing in return -especially if it is done as a sacred duty.

There is a lot I could say but I will limit it to this: Not everyone will require the same treatment, a lot will depend on the age of the child, whether under 5 or older and the severity of the disease - whether there has been damage to the femoral head or not, what type of surgery(there are several), if any. is possible. For some cases braces are still used. Even with a parent who is an expert in their own child's illness one cannot take their expereince and apply it to all children with the same disease. There are many variables with this serious disease. The family need to take the advice of the the specialist who has examined the child clinically. And a specialist who is that, a specialist who has seen and treated hundreds of cases with a team of POS who can combine their knowledge and do the best for every child based on experience and expertise. Agreed; but are you saying with 100% absolute certainty based on your OWN experience (rather than someone else's) that the diagnosis and treatment they will receive here is incorrect? Otherwise how does it help this family? They need to go with the treatment they have been given here by the clinical expert who is available to them - until such time that they are in a postion to seek another opinion elsewhere should they choose to. Nothing else will help them at the moment. Ignoring the clinical opinion and treatment option they have been given in favor of a secondhand experience will not. edited by Genie on 06/02/2011

So every since i came off the pill my periods have been quite irregular and now ive almost at day 50. My gynae has recommended a pill which will induce my period - but im nervous about taking it as i think i will just end up having same problem next mnth. Any thoughts? Anyone tried it? The same thing happened to me when I first came off the pill years ago - I went more than 60 days without a period. The doctor prescribed a similar treatment - she explained that going so long without a period can cause fibroids to develop. The doctor did arrange for me to have an ultrasound first though in order to rule out any other cause for the lack of periods. Once I had the treatment - it was a one off injection - my periods came back and were regular.

Poor Queenslanders. I can only imagine how terrifying this must be. My thoughts and prayers are with them all and especially for those here who have relatives caught up in this. Australia is having it so hard lately - yesrs of droughts, the terrible fires last year, devastating floods and now in the south record heatwaves and the risk of fire again. Good job you are a such a resilient lot.

I had a lease car and had a police report from someone who kindly damaged the fender and then drove off.. Anyway I had it for about a year and it was not a problem. I am sure the care hire company would have told me if it was and would have undoubtedly come after me for money or something! Wwhen I reported the damge to the care hire company they said just bring the report when you bring the car back... and as it was only minor damage I left it quite a while!

Good lord the UK has plenty of trash on tv. And nothing is more trashy that that UK show my big fat gypsy wedding. I was at friends a few years back and they were watching a show called [i'>Celebrity Mingers! [/i'>[b'>[/b'> which was British. Totally trashy but very enjoyable. I would watch Big Fat Gypsy wedding if I had access to it as I would be fascinated by the gypsy lifestyle... but I have no time for most trashy TV, American or British as I feel they are all just playing up and exaggerating for the cameras - particularly the American shows - if I am allowed to say that!

can you have 2 jobs in Dubai ie be employed by 2 part-time companies? someone said the law has just changed so you can be now? I would be very surprised if you could have two jobs. Usually you are only allowed to work for you sponsor. It has taken them all this time to allow part time work - don't think they are ready for the next step yet. There is an article in the National on this today but it does not mention being able to work at more than job. "Josef Fritzl has been writing letters to his daughter begging for money so [b'>he can study law and defend himself[/b'>." Please tell me I'm not the only one who finds that the most unbelievable bit of the article. It was. However it is just a ploy - I am sure he has no intention of studying law and has already been tried so what is there to defend? As I said before I feel it is just his way to try and exert some control still over his daughter and should not be allowed.

I call it cabin fever. Caused by the accumalation of the small (and not so small) daily stresses and frustrations. My cure is to make sure I get out of the country every 4 months or so otherwise I develop a bad case of it. I think it is worse if you work as you get exposed to far more of it - as well as the ones that everyone gets - roads, poor service etc etc.

OOH, I just had the chance to catch up with the debate here. My worry is, I don't want other children to laugh at her accent when she goes to school back home. I prefer no accent to an strong accent of some sort (be it aussie/indian/german/whatever). [b'>It's very likely we will be going back to the UK (DH is a brit), where Indian accent might give her a disadvantage. Whether I like it or not, it's not very acceptable in the UK. I wish it was. [/b'>CA, as a parent, I want to give my child the best of what I can. I want to make sure I give her the best start in life. There is nothing wrong if I don't want her to pick up a certain way of talking. I take exception to that statement - as I am sure you aware many would when you posted it. Not sure of your motives for doing so. I can only say that I have worked with people in the UK who are leaders in their field - Professors / well known and respected Doctors/ researchers etc and yes they have an Indian accent and it has never been a hinderance to them.

vjdubai - sorry for your loss i fully sympathize with you. I lost my mother 5 years ago and not many days go by when I do not think of her and miss her but now without the pain I first felt. The pain does get easier but it takes time. For the first two years I could not think of my mother without getting tearful. Now I can - although I still get tearful at times. As for your friends- some people just cannot deal with the pain of others loss and grief. I think for some it scares them as it makes them consider the fact that they too, will one day be feeling the pain and grief you are going through. Others do not realise how long it takes to come to terms with such loss; they expect you to be " better" after a month or two. I think the world is divided into two - those who have lost a parent and those that have not. Of course there are those who can empathize and support you even if they have not been through it. I had friends in both camps- I went to the ones who understood and sympathized when I needed it. You may also find that people are scared to bring the subject up in case it upsets you. Why not try opening up to them - they may just be waiitng to take their cue from you. If not then there is a grief counsellor who has been recommended on many other threads - she works out of Dr Keith Nichols Clinic on Beach rd. If you do not have friends willing to listen then maybe try her as talking things out is a good way to release the pain. I hope you find a sympathetic ear soon. GGP - I am so sorry for you loss also - how terrible I hope you too find a sympathetic ear and some support as unresolved grief can be an awful thing as it never goes away; it sounds as if you are too busy taking care of everyone to even start to come to terms with your own grief. Look after your own needs as well.

Does the cream get rid of the hot flushes? Yes it has - that was the last syptom to be controlled though. If you read the website it tells you that you may initially get a bit of a surge in symptoms and if so to cut back on the cream and increase again gradually. That is what happened to me my flushes initially increased slightly but are now mostly under control except for the odd minor one - nothing like they used to be.

It has worked and very quickly, although not all of symptoms have gone 100% but that is probably because I forget to use it some days.

I had the same problem and heard and read on here many people say add some bleach to the rinse. Did just that with the special chlorox clothes bleach only to have some very expensive bedding come out of the machine with yellow splotches on it. I THEN read the instructions on the bedding which said DO NOT BLEACH (note to self always read instructions first) I then very bravely tried it with some white sheets that did not have that instruction and they came out sparkling white. So you could try that but read the instructions first! ;) edited by Genie on 23/01/2011
