feefnick - I have lived here a very long time and in Australia before that so I am definitely acclimatized. When I go home to the UK I shiver in what is considered a heatwave there and will not remove my cardi let alone break out a swimsuit or anything sleeveless. I sold my car in Sept 2010 and decided to do without a car as a lot of my working life I had lived in cities without the need for a car and decided I should try and do without one here. August 2011 was my undoing. Whereas getting to work was a breeze as taxis are plentiful where I live, any other expidition began to be torture. The breaking point was grocery shopping, waiting on the side of the road with heavy bags in the heat and humidity often for up to and above 30 minutes at a time was a killler. Because of the high humidity here you do not have the normal cooling processes, evaporation of sweat, as it is too humid, the result being that you overheat rapidly. Then when you do go inside a cool building you sweat like a p*g, and end up looking like you have just stepped straight out of the pool... fully clothed. One of the breaking points for me was when a taxi stopped, with someone already inside and offered to share the journey... the Filipino maid inside was going to the same place and wanted to know who my 'madam' was. LOL.. time to get a car again. I suggest you investigate a back up plan of a reliable taxi driver who you can call on the days when the humidity is really stinkingly high. <em>edited by Genie on 09/05/2012</em>

Thanks ladies for the replies. The Shelter looks awesome but they close early. Will check them out this week. I searched the National and found it -- http://makebusinesshub.com/ Will have to call and see if they're open - fingers crossed.[/quot Hope it is the same one... the one I am thinking of is definitely open as they reviewed the food. Perhaps it is in the restaurant review section?

The shelter in Al Quoz is a free business space http://www.thenational.ae/news/uae-news/small-business-friend-shelter-reopens-in-dubai There is also a new one in the Marina ? JBR area that is a cafe with the same function, desks WiFi etc I can't remember the name but it us hoepfully the same one SimoneN is thinking of. Try searching the National archives as they featured it, though their search function is pretty useless sad to say...

Hah we should be so lucky! it is too hot to rain. Now if a nice shamal blew in and dropped the air temperature we might be in with a chance... but as it is we will just have to put up with hot and windy and dusty.:(

How heartbreaking for you, it is hard enough to lose one much loved pet let alone two. Take comfort in the fact that whilst they were with you they were so much loved and well cared for, the joy and happiness you gave each other was mutual. Do not be too hard on yourself, you acted in your pets best interests - accidents are so called that because that is what they are. None of us have a crystal ball, if we did we would all lead perfect lives.. <em>edited by Genie on 09/05/2012</em>

I pay the same as Sue62. During winter, I feel as though it's a donation but during summer he has much more to do....so it evens out. Not sure what maths Genie is using in her calculation. i think she's assuming the 250 is per month.... Errr... yes I am as that is the title of the thread "250dhs a month for a gardner... "

I am just renewing mine for my daughter and I've came to the part where you need someone who has known you here for 2 years to countersign it. I've not been here for 2 years!! what do you do??? Is this a straighforward renewal with no name or status change for a British Citizen (rather than subject)? If so then no need for any supporting documents or countersignature. I thought so when reviewing the information but after carefully scrolling through it all realised it is not necessary. See this thread for more information. http://www.expatwoman.com/forum/messages.aspx?TopicID=176849

Doesn't it really make you respect the Bedouin who have lived here for thousands of years with no a/c though. Respect!!!! I agree (although they had no choice) but still I cannot for one minute imagine it. I used to live in Al Ain which is much hotter and dryer. Every day I had to walk, several times, between my office and the main site. Used to be 5-7 minutes each way in the 50+ degree heat and a wind like the hottest speed on the hairdryer (in August) I found the best thing to do was just walk slowly and not think about it. Same going shopping in the days before the malls, learnt to go shopping like the locals - after 8pm in the evening. Can't imagine having to spend all day out in it with no AC for respite. But still it is more bearable than the lower temps but higher humidity in Dubai.

I lived in Jeddah and used to walk 3/4 mile to supermarket every day when I finished work at 2.30pm. This was in my abaya. It WAS hot but i just went slowly. Wasn't pleasant but i managed. lol Feefmick all these mums who walk out of their air conditioned houses to their air conditioned cars. [b'>What if there were only donkeys and camels as transport what would they do then ;)[/[/b'>quote'> Simple - I would not live here! or if there was no AC either and I could think of other things i would add to that list;)

What about the nespresso. I have one and I love it. You can buy the pods in moe or Dubai mall or they will deliver. Not sure about the pod type, was really interested in the ones that grind the coffee beans. Just out of interest how much is the machines and pods? I have a Krupps and I love it. My 1st one was over 10 years old and I am not sure if it really broke or I just did not load it properly. As it made a huge noise and sort seemed to blow up I did not have the courage to try it again to see. I have bought another Krupps though, the more updated one and it is great, the crema on the coffee makes my morning! I did look at one of the more complicated one that grinds for each cup etc but I think the more complicated the more can go wrong, I tend to distrust any appliance with an LED screen. My brother bought one for over 700 pounds and it has spent as much time back at the manufactuers as it has making coffee. I think, up to a point, the simpler the better. Personally I do not like the Nespresso ones - I think the coffee is awful - though coffee is the one thing I will admit to being snob about ;) ETA I bought the seperate Krupps coffee grinder as after doing a lot of research (based on my brothers experience) the grinder is the thing that most often goes wrong on the all in one types. Also the new Krupps one can take pods as well - though the paper "illi coffee" type ones rather than the plastic Nespresso ones. <em>edited by Genie on 07/05/2012</em>

Defo seen it in several Spinneys. Glas jar. Quite expensive (ca 25AED). Anybody ever made some??? So often craving Cream tea.... yum... edited by MaiTai on 07/05/2012 http://www.wikihow.com/Make-Your-Own-Clotted-Cream I have not made this yet but it is definitely on my to do list .. one day when I don't have to work, have the time, etc etc. On the other hand if you buy the Country Life brand double cream you will find that it has invariably seperated and the top half of the tub is thick and yellow and just like clotted cream. I use that as my "fix" for now.

I often send tissue samples from biopsies to the UK, some are weeks old before they are sent. As long as the have been "fixed" properly by the lab onto glass slides then there is no problem. Sorry to say though that some of the specimens taken here are of a poor quality to begin with so it is difficult for the labs in the UK to confirm or make a diagnosis. Fingers crossed the samples you sent were of a good quality. ETA the ones I send are on humans not pets though it should not make any diffrerence <em>edited by Genie on 02/05/2012</em>

there's a list of comparison sites further down the page.... http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/travel/cheap-car-hire I use this site everytime I book cars in the UK, it shows the best deals both for car hire and insurance, though It usually ends up being a car with Europcar as they always seem to be the one that comes up with the best deal.

Maybe restart your computer to get things normal again otherwise you might have a virus if its not your settings or its time for an eye checkup ;) So are you seeing the font size in the message box the exact same size as the featured links font size? Yes. Puzzled how I am seeing the add message box font size smaller than the other when everyone else sees it bigger. At least I know its not because of my eyesight! edited by Di@DXB on 02/05/2012 It is not just you - I have complained about this before now! The font in the add message box is teeny tiny and is the reason why I make so many typos - I can't see them until I have posted the message and it appears in bigger font on the thread. Usually I only wear glasses in very low light for smal fonts - but I need them even in bright light when adding a message here. Glad admin is going to fix it

I had this done at Al Biraa arthritis center on Al Wasl road. I have looked it up - the total cost including consultation, Ketamine for local anesthetic and the steroid injection was 750 DH. After months of treatment with ultrasound / manipulation/ electrical therapy it as worth every dirham as it worked. I saw Dr Munir Al Amedy on the recommendation of my chiropractor who had been treating me.

It seems that what I thought about this - that the assault did not cause the brian heammorahge - is possibly correct. This girl had an AV malformation and a anuerysm that ruptured. Understandably, the family are insisting that the assault caused it to rupture, though the majority rupture spontaneously with no trauma. I still think the fact that she was complaining of nausea and vomited before the assualt indicates it had already ruptured- especially as one report says that the reason the boys attacked her was because she fell on one of them. Still does not excuse what they did and I pray she makes a full recovery. http://www.thenational.ae/news/uae-news/health/schoolyard-assault-girl-had-brain-condition I guess this makes those little angels less responsible for what they did to her. A gang of boys beating a tiny female child? Wow...I imagine those families must be so proud of their sons. Lets just hope they don't grow up to do worse to the women in their lives or try and run people off the roads in their SUVs. Very very sad. :( I imagine the fact that she had an AV malformation and an anuerysm that [i'>might [/i'> have ruptured beforehand may make them less culpable, although I am sure the family will never think that. I find 4 boys attacking a young girl a terrible thing - whatever nationalities are involved.

Hi Genie Not sure if you are talking about Dr S or Dr P. I saw Dr P, he was absolutley fantastic, I flew back to the UK just to see him. His book is also very good, I would recommend it. It is called How to keep your Thyroid healthy and can be bought from Amazon. Hi Nikki - I was talking about Dr S. I was very grateful for the info you posted about Dr Maclean but it seems according to S&O's post he has left which is a pity. Never mind I will see Dr S when I next go home, I have known him for years and I know he will see me. I would definitely be interested in a support group if I am diagnosed. Interestingly one of the maxim's of Dr S is that the patient will tell you the diagnosis and I do think I have an underactive thyroid.

Just literally had a lady and her daughter knock on our door begging for money. Security obviously let them in, so will have words. Both well dressed. Very polite, but had laminate pages with hand written note as to their reasons. She seemed to have a few of these, so same note written in several languages no doubt. TBH, didn't read it properly, saw something about her having 5 children to support. But was so thrown by it, told them I was sorry I had no cash (which was true), and she seems to put on a cry. Daughter didn't make eye contact at all. Was sure it was a scam, but still felt awlful afterwards. Don't feel bad, the ones with the laminated cards are more likely to be scammers, pity she has to involve a child in it though. I had something similar happen to me. I was sitting in a mall having coffee and was approached by a woman who handed me a laminated card. It said that she needed money as she could not work as she was deaf and dumb. All I did was ask how she managed to get a visa to be here if she could not work and she snatched the card back and dashed off- she managed to hear what I said above the noise of the mall despite being "deaf". Sh e could not have lip read what I said as she stood to the side and slightly behind me!

Sit them both down and knock their heads together - not literally but by giving them both a stern talking to. Tell them youwill not put up with such disharmony in your home and if necessary will let them both go rather then put up with it. Also tell them you dont want to hear any tales but will be watching them very closely to work out the truth for yourself. You do not need their petty squabbles impacting your household in such a way - they are there to help not cause more problems. It is difficult as you only have their word for it - and some find it all too easy to turn on the waterworks. If the one is bullying the other then of course that is unacceptable, but it could be a case of the one maid being upset and sensitive because of her personal circumstances. Just let them both know and then observe their behavoir, the fact they know you will not tolerate it may be enough to stop it. Oh and read the riot act to the one who woke your child up for deliberately doing that!

I do feel in time the parameters will alter and more people will be treated fo either over active or under active conditions. Like everything it takes time and effort to get things to change for the better. [b'>Too often people are either not diagnosed or are misdiagnosed and have suffered for many years. For women it is frequently confused with other conditions as peri menopause is one of them[/b'>. That would be me then - I really think that and have done for some time (years even). Having "normal" results here put me off persuing it. Should have known better from what my neighbour told me but I never spoke to him about it for some reason! did not like to bother him - although I know he would not have minded as I see him socially every time I go home. It is always the way with science / medicine - those at the forefront are often derided - until their views beccome the accepted norm.

I was very interested in this thread. There are many support groups in the UK - this is one of the more informative ones: http://www.thyroiduk.org.uk/tuk/support/tuk_support.html One of my neighbours in the UK is one of the doctors recommended on this site and they also recommend his book. Like the doctor in the OP's post he also fell foul of the GMC but won his case in part due to the number of patients who came forward to support him - he has patients coming from all over the UK and some from as far away as Europe to consult him in his private surgery across the road in our little village. He is a very interesting guy to talk to on the subject, he maintains that so many people are undiagnosed due to the high parameters for treatment set by the UK/ Europe. I have several symptoms but was told here my throid results were "normal". I was going to chat with him about it next time I go home but good to know there is someone likeminded practising here now so I don't have to wait. <em>edited by Genie on 26/04/2012</em>

MonkeyFace you might be right. I feel sad for those guys. I think they are labourers, which often been treated very bad by their employers. They might be just trying to 'earn' some extra cash. I know from my DH that their Office boy in the company often doesn't get the full salary he should. My DH company pays for the office boy to this cleaning company, but they always seem to find new reasons not to pay to the young man. Now they are thinking to take over this guy on their own support. You sound very conflicted. You start a thread with the title "annoying beggars" and then you say you feel "sad for those guys". I also feel sad for genuine cases but do not like to be scammed. So I give to those I believe to have genuine hardship. I always give money to the road sweepers when I see them, buy the snacks of the labourers in the queue at the checkout, give money to the office cleaners and security men etc etc This allows me to ignore the beggars who may be scamming me with a more or less clear conscience - most of the time <em>edited by Genie on 26/04/2012</em>

It is well documented here in the local press that many people come here on tourist visas specifically to beg and they target more affluent areas. I noticed a marked increase in it when the metro opened where I live -I had exactly the same experience on most evenings if I walked around my area. I presumed it was now easier for them to target new areas. The police had several articles in the paper a few months ago about it and how lucrative it is. They said it has increased hugely and have set up a hotline to report cases - 8004483

I can not believe there is that amount of violence at such a young age: http://gulfnews.com/news/gulf/uae/education/scale-of-violence-shocks-family-1.1013270 I read the report of this in The National this morning and wondered if they actually caused this. In that report it said she was complianing of nausea and vomited before the incident and had no bruising etc from the assualt. I wonder if the heamorrhage actually started before the fight and it was just a coincidence? In order to assualt someone so badly they has a brain heamorrhage the level of violence required would leave bruising etc. Also the reason she is kept in a medical coma is that after brain surgery this is normal practice to help reduce swelling of the brain rather than becuae they would be in too much pain if awake. Although the incident was bad and I feel for the familly and this child I can't help but think that all is not quite as portrayed. http://www.thenational.ae/news/uae-news/girl-11-unconscious-in-hospital-after-school-playground-attack <em>edited by Genie on 25/04/2012</em>

why do people need to take the maid for a family day out ? i know lots do...i just don't get it... I don't get why people: Live in villas with gardens they try and turn into lush green paradises when they live in the middle of a desert and then complain about their DEWA bills Buy all their food in spinneys and then complain about the prices Have big gas guzzling SUV's that they cannot park Live in the monotonous suburbs of new Dubai Dye their hair a brassy shade of blonde and then let their roots show Starve themselves till they have no breasts left and then have breast implants that look like tennis balls Stay married to obnoxious and abusive men etc etc etc etc I could go on but you get my drift? the point is we do not have to understand others choices, luckily we have the freedom to make these small or big choices without anyones understanding or approval - otherwise it would be a very boring world :D

A few years ago my husband and and I were at the Westin and one of the female guests was swimming (or floating???) topless - I was so shocked that no-one said anything - they would keep on appearing on the top of the water! :o Did I mention it was during Ramadan!!!! That said I don't have an issue when ladies are lying in their front and undo their clasps (nothing to see!) to get a more even tan! I have been on JBR beach seen women topless and the police patroling. They didnt even glance at them Personally speaking if i see people inappropriately dressed in western countries i could not care less. Who are we to judge? It is their business and it doesnt bother me if people wish to cover either.. As long as people are not physically harming people then who cares :-) In my case I told her as she was providing great entertainment to the locals on the other side of the chain link fence. I also gave her the benefit of the doubt that she maybe did not know this or the fact that she could be arrested - which in those days she certainly would have been by the police who patrolled the public beach next door on an almost hourly basis. Also back then there was reaction to these incidents by a clamping down on some things- which affected those of us who had to live rather than just holiday here. What did she say when you told her? some people just dont care here unfortunately. She did not say a word - just glared at me and covered up - I told her politely that she was in a muslim country and could be arrested for sunbathing topless I also pointed out the guys on the other side of the fence all looking at her.

there is another route you could use that would avoid the problem When you are on Doha street coming from Dubai Mall instead of taking the exit that you do now, carry on to the next exit just past the Marooj rotana - you need to stay in the far right hand lane to take it as this filters right just before Defence RA flyovers. Follow this road - it is currently single track and a bit winding due to road works. It will take you past the side of DIFC and you will join the Emirates towers roundabout at the end of the road, except you will be in the correct lane and just on top of the exit the you need.

Thanks ladies, think this will just take a bit of practice and I should prepare to miss the exit a couple of times lol. Genie next time I will try your tactic although I haven't changed lanes while on a roundabout so that will be a new experience. Problem is that during my driving lessons I only encountered a one lane roundabout so this is all very new! Normally I would not do that but with this one you need to as not enough room/time to get over if you leave it till you exit the roundabout.

If you come from the direction of Dubai Mall, then you turn left at the second (?) set of lights to get to the Difc and there is a roundabout there. You will have Emirates towers on your right, straight is to the Metro and if you take a u-turn you head back to the traffic lights, and on the right just after the roundabout is the slip road that takes you to visitors parking. I hope this is more clear, am not terribly good at describing things like this. OK I know now. Go on the very inside of the roundabout nearly all the way around, as you approaching the exit of the roundabout signal and move over into the outside lane so that you can take the turn for the car park. That RA is only two lanes so it is an easy manouvere as it is never busy excpt at rush hours. ETA - if you go around in the outside lane you will definitely be hit by cars taking the top exit for emirates towers! Edited for typo - put iside instead of outside! edited by Genie on 24/04/2012 <em>edited by Genie on 24/04/2012</em>

Ladies I am a new driver and just don't understand the multi-lane roundabouts here. Today I had to go to the DIFC and coming from Dubai mall, you take the a u-turn at the roundabout at Emirates Towers to get to the visitor parking. First time I was in the inside lane and missed the turnoff for the parking as it comes very quickly after the turnoff and there was no room for me to switch lanes. Second attempt I'm in the outside lane indicating left and I get cut off by a car taking the turnoff before me from the left... So that wasn't very succesful either. Any tips? I don't drive a tank so the size of my car isn't impressive enough to ward of others ;) You know I drive around there all the time and I cannot recoginize what you are talking about from your description. Perhaps if you were clearer we could advise? Do you mean the u turn after the roundabout (as if you were driving straight towards the metro station from the roundabout - or are you taking about coming from the opposite direction?

There have always been people here (used to be tourists mostly) who dress in unacceptable ways. I remember at least 18 years ago at the jumeriah hotel (now le royal meridian) an italian tourist sunbathing topless and in those days in was much more conservative here. She was right up against the boundary fence where all the young locals used to congregate on the other side with their jet skis. I went to speak with her and my friend who was here on holiday was flabbergasted at my behaviour - don't know who was more angry of the two of us... Recently I was in The One on Beach Rd and a woman was perusing the furniture wearing only a long t-shirt that barely covered her crotch with a clearly visible wet bikini underneath. The boob and bum area were making big wet patches on her t- shirt - it was like a wet t- shirt competition. I think if you went furniture shopping anywhere in the world dressed like that you would be stared at. Had me clutching my pearls! <em>edited by Genie on 24/04/2012</em>

It was on a hunting elephants trip in Botswana. He has now lost his position as head of the world wildlife fund for Spain. He also managed to break his hip on that trip. I could not help but think "serve him right". ETA - he has also since apologised for hunting elephants <em>edited by Genie on 19/04/2012</em>

"the finest water money can buy". How pretenious and ridiculous. Should be a big hit then. LOL yes will go down a storm in Dubai Exactly. It reminds me of that 'only fools and horses' episode where Del was bottling the tap water and selling it as Pekhams finest or something similar...
