You audibly laugh that people on the UK think that it is soooooo hot there when it reaches above 28 degrees and weather warnings are issued when it goes above 30. The fact that it doesn't even go that low here in summer, even over night, would suggest that the flesh fest is an over reaction to a bit of sun - as rare as it may be in the UK. I think that's a bit unfair. The fact is that most English homes are designed to keep the heat in, with thick insulation and carpets making it extremely uncomfortable to even sleep at night in 30+ temperatures. People generally don't complain that it's too hot to sit out in the garden or go down to the beach; the problem comes when they have to go back indoors as it can be unbearable. We can laugh all we like about it over here but most of us live in buildings specifically designed to cope with this kind of weather - cool tiles on the floor, reflective windows and, of course, the ubiquitous air conditioning. It's 30 degrees during the day over there not at night. It's around 16 at night which is 10 degrees less than I have my AC set to. The inside of a typical British house will be much warmer than 16 degrees at night after a long day of 30-35 degree sunshine, simply because of the way they are designed. We become acclimatised to warmer weather because we live over here and deal with these sort of temperatures almost every day. They get them over there for several days every few years, so it's understandable that some people might find it unbearable. Me thinks someone is taking a joking thread too seriously and well up on a high horse. Another expat expert. edited by Gibberish on 10/07/2013

Not an urban myth. Been going on for decades! But if it is true and us women know it, then why do so many women go away for the summer without their husbands? Because the wives don't want to get burnt feet when hanging out the washing or melted hands on the steering wheel. Either that or they look at their husbands and assume that even the drunkest of women wouldn't want to go there....... edited by Gibberish on 08/07/2013

It's a feminine thing. Motherhood is in a woman's body from the day she is born! It is our natural occupation. Wow. Motherhood is a choice that not everyone wants to follow. There are some people who really don't want kids. And for those child free people your outlook makes it more difficult. Sorry to hijack OP. edited by Gibberish on 04/07/2013 It's true that not everyone wants children. But it is in a woman's natural disposition to have a fondness for children. children are just adorable! Why do you think that a woman has a fondness for children or that children are adorable? I think you'll find that both of your statements are flawed. I know a fair few woman who would totally disagree with you on both of these points!

Ask one specific question about the landmark, eg if they have the burj Khalifa what is the height, nearest answer wins. Guest could write the answer down during the first part of the festivities, collect in and then awarded later in the proceedings or they could all write it down and the answers could be in a sealed envelope on the table. Each table has a question about the landmark on their table. Hope that makes sense. edited by Gibberish on 31/05/2013 edited by Gibberish on 31/05/2013

"transform a boring household chore into a 'delight'" Not even a semi clad Brad Pitt standing in front of me could turn ironing into a delight. And £1500 for an iron? My entire wardrobe didn't cost that much, so I'd just throw the clothes away and get new ones for that price. Eta the actual answer to the question - the first time she used it, so a couple of hours. That would be enough to see some molten mess stuck to the bottom, albeit a crease free molten mess. edited by Gibberish on 30/05/2013

My first cynical instinct is that he wants to re-rent the property at a higher price as soon as you vacate. If he gives you notice he cannot re-rent for either 1 or 2 years. But if he says you left he will be able to get new tenants straight away.

We are moving to Dubai in August and are currently visiting to sort out a schools and house. DD will be starting Fs1 in September and we have had offers this week from GEMS Wellington Academy - Al Khail and Foremarke. Both are new schools so we can't judge it based on results. Foremarke in the UK is very well thought of. I like both schools, well what I have seen on paper anyway! Foremarke is very expensive compared with GEMS. We need to make a decision tomorrow. Which would you choose? Don't equate schools here with there counterparts back there. They are like franchises and I have heard some none too complimentary things about a school here with a Derby connection....

I can only speak for National Landlords, who, if they took a bank loan to pay for the property/building/construction have to set the rents at what the banks demand. This has always been the case. Could that be the reason why some properties sit empty?

It doesn't matter what any of us think or how wrong you say it is. It is what it is and there's nothing you can do about it. It's not bad news for everyone. A lot of people got stung buying property last time round because the rents were so high. We are still in negative equity so prices can keep going up for us! Surely putting rents up to ridiculous levels - 20-30% increase pa - again will cause another bust which will still leave you in negative equity. Won't it be better to stabilise the market, make rents affordable to renters but also cover the landlords outgoings (with a profit as well) be better all round?

Unfortunately, I don't think this is a bubble this time. High prices might be here to stay. I agree that food and school fees won't necessarily come down, but how can the rental rises continue they way they are going? Some LLs are deluded with the prices they are asking and I have seen several properties sitting empty for months on end as people won't pay the overinflated cost.

I don't know what exactly happened & if I'm honest, I don't want to know as these awful images linger & upset me so much. I'm just so sad that these horrendous situations keep happening. A tragic reflection on mankind that some people think that inflicting pain and suffering on defenceless animals is acceptable. Has this situation been publicized in 7 Days? Not sure about 7days but i know Hayley from DSDP has been busy today doing interviews with gulf news, radio 2, another radio station and has been asked for an interview with Ahlan on the situation. Apparently local schools are also wanting to get involved. It really is such a tragedy but here's hoping something good will come from it. They are talking about it on Dubai 92 this morning. Im not considering her its just an add i found when searching for one i clicked on it and couldnt believe my eyes. :O I bet this "maid" will be the one interviewing the employer, not the other way around loooool. Can you imagine she maybe only wants to work from 9-10 am with Friday Sunday Monday Tuesday and Wednesday as her "off days" Lol loooooool and will only baby sit at 100% extra per hour. The best way for your son to become a pilot, and by best I mean most inexpensive for you and the quickest way for him to progress, is to apply to various airlines that have cadet programs. You son will get the proper training and begin flying in the airlines immediately. If he goes to flying school he will learn how to fly on a single engine, get his ppl then his com licenses. It is very costly. He will only be able to find work flying for small charter companies. however some people prefer to fly for smaller companies so it will be completely up to him. I think Etihad has a cadet program, I also think Cathay Pacific and BA do them too. Good luck I was just about to post the same thing! Very tough to get into the cadet programs. It may be worth gwtting the PPL as people with these appear to get further in the selection process for the cadet programs.

move out then - if you really are fed up with him; stop giving him your money. Been trying to find somewhere but no luck and with the incredibly short notice he gave us it's not looking likely that we will find somewhere suitable. Plus the fact it will p1$* him off that he can't get more money for another year.

Which probably proves OP's point...........people buying Huskies they don't understand/ can't handle and then dumping them. You are right, but I didn't want everyone looking at people with huskies assuming that they are cruel, horrible people who have bought unsuitable dogs to Dubai for their own gratification when in fact they are rescuing them from a life in kennels.

It is abhorrent in the UK that any person could be executed for any crime, no matter how bad. That is why she is expecting the British government and taxpayers to help her out. She hasn't lived in the UK for years. She was in Bali so surely subject to Indonesian law and all that entails? Why should tax payers pay the price? As I said, she is a British citizen so she is hoping her countrymen will be appalled by her sentence. Where was she living? India I believe. According to the media she was well known for smuggling. The UK government has written a letterabout her sentence, but refuse to fund an appeal. A charity called Reprive were talking about suing the government for not funding her. I just can't get my head around why they should be expected to spend Hard working taxpayers money on her. It's made clear what the punishments are...

the issue I believe is that this woman says she was coerced; she was threatened that her kids would be harmed if she didn't do it. now I do not know what her situation was when this threat happened, and why she could not have gone to the police at that stage. Also has she described the people that made her carry the drugs????? some things seem unbelievable really...most people know that this country,Thailand and Singapore are the worst for punishment of this type of crime I'm sure I read somewhere that she had a bit of a dodgy past long before this but dont quote me on that. She apparently was smuggling hash from India. If so then it kind of puts a different slant on the story. edited by summer breeze on 08/05/2013 I'm sure she had convictions in the UK going back 20+ years. It just annoys me that she was caught with £1.6million of drugs, gets busted, expects the UK tax payer to bail her out. Would she have paid tax on her elicit drug money? Me thinks not.

Don't see how mine and DH's financial circumstances has got anything to do with this. Once again, I'm being asked to justify my working when it has nothing to do with my question since baby would be asleep when and if we went out which would be the same if I worked or not. Am I supposed to sit by DD's crib watching her sleep every night because she is in nursery all day? Weird logic. I am hardly baring my soul here - I could dig out threads that would make the most openminded person blush. People discuss their husbands cheating, their intimate gynae problems and all sorts. I was never going to be a mumsy mum who sat in a floral Laura Ashley number, never wearing makeup and tutoring Tarquin and Persephone to get into Oxford aged 10. I'd rather be a fun mum who has a giggle with them. I want to look hot for my hubby, go to work as I love bantering with my colleagues and pulling in the b@con, and go out with my girlies every so often. I also want to take my baby to the zoo, do bedtime religiously, and play with her on her playmat. Being a mum doesn't mean being a martyr to domesticity - you don't win any prizes for being the world's best mum, they come in all shapes and sizes. Now you can catch me and DH having steak at Gaucho in a few months, I may even have a glass of red (clutches pearls). Just make sure the glass is a big one and full to the brim! May as well give the uber mommies something to really rip into you for!

Poor thing is in nursery all day already and you want to leave her at night as well? You need to do what is best for you but perhaps it's your priorities that are wrong? What a horrible thing to say!!!!OP is talking about going out once a month and I think she deserves a night out. Perhaps she does. And anyways, what does she care what people think? I would never come on a forum and ask total strangers - most of whom come from a totally different background than me - and ask something so personal. You want to leave your baby day and night? Go right ahead. edited by Quinn10 on 05/05/2013 edited by Quinn10 on 05/05/2013 Get a grip lady. She's talking once a month not every night.

to be fair to Madonna, she delayed for her dancers to let the temp drop a bit. sure io was hot for us waiting but theybwere dancing in full costume. I was close to the stage and they were literally mopping sweat off the stage withntowels. at least she actually put on a show Maybe they should have thought of that when setting the times for the concert. Lets face it, it is not a shock that it is hot in UAE in June - it wasn't a freak of nature last year. I wouldn't have minded if they said 11pm start - fine I would have arrived at 10-10.30ish. And yes she is does a good show, but Metallica, Iron Maiden, The Script etc also put on a great prformance but managed not to be over 2 hours late. Maybe they are just not as Divaish as Madge and Just In Beaver.....

This is a violation of the tenancy agreement. A business is a trade or profession and since the company's trading address is your property, there is no ambiguity. Personally I would serve notice to the tenant. Once they move out check that your address is no longer associated with the company.
