I needed to lie down in a dark room after seeing the cost of Emirates fares to London this summer! Once I had been resuscitated, I checked on Expedia and booked with Gulf Air instead. Not my first choice of airline, but once I calmed down (!) I was happy with the flight timings with Gulf Air, as they are daytime flights, and the changeover in Bahrain is for less than 2 hours. Also I heard that Pegasus airlines are operating no-frills flights into Stansted, for anyone interested... I'd be very keen to hear of experiences about that route! (visions of Ryanair-esque treatment and paying to use the loo, but I could be wrong!) I looked at Pegasus prices and they are not actually that cheap! If you want to be cheap maybe an Airarabia flight to Istanbul and Easyjet or Pegasus from there to the UK. Not checked it out price wise.

Have you ever thought that most maids get Friday off. So by you giving her a "day" off during the week, she may feel isolated as all her friends work? Also, IMHO you are being unreasonable by "allowing" her only 10 hours off. Really don't understand. Back home most people cope with kids, jobs etc without a maid 365 days a year. Why do you feel you can't cope on a Friday?

These multiple earthquake threads would make very amusing reading to residents of California. (Or even people here in Cyprus.) A tremor is NOT an earthquake. Iran suffered an earthquake, UAE felt a tremor.............not uncommon. edited by Livelytrish on 16/04/2013 So when is a tremor large enough to graduate and be considered an earthquake? Gulf news is saying what we felt would be somewhere between 4 or 5 on the Richter scale. They way my house shook and shuddered, that was plenty big enough for this scaredy cat. I believe that tremors are in fact earthquakes (and earthquakes are tremors). Tremors tend to refer to non-destructive, earthquakes are when there has been surface damage. Just pure somantics really. A 4 or 5 on the Richter scale can cause a lot of damage. I've lived in Turkey where there were regular tremors.

Been a vegetarian for almost 30 years. There are plenty of things to eat other than pasta: quinoa, chickpeas, cous cous, sweet potato, rice, curry, roasted vegetables..... Try this for some ideas https://www.vegsoc.org/ There are more veg websites than vegetarians so try google for some other ideas. Just be warned that when travelling to certain countries it can be difficult

Class size is 24ish, so an extra 6 kids makes 30ish. I'm not keen on this arrangement either--disruptive to all classes rather than just 1 and does make classes overcrowded and probably more unruly... The school seems to find it very difficult to get supply teachers in (or providing internal coverage) so I was wondering if there was a problem with this Dubai-wide, or whether it was just our school. Difficult to get supply because, in the most part, it wouldn't be legal unless they work for a company that provides them. Some schools get the part time teachers to come in, but this is not always possible. edited by Gibberish on 28/02/2013

Used them a few times. I hate paying over inflated prices for flights, so I don't mind budget airlines. And these are nice enough. The queues going through passport control at the T2 are usually fairly long, so get there a bit early.

Some foolish man tried to touch my backside when I was at the supermarket. I suspected he was going going to try something when he got way too close in the tampon aisle. So before he had the opportunity, I 'accidentally' swung round with my metal basket and caught home full on in his meat and 2 veg. Obviously, I did apologies profusely before walking off with a smirk on my face. Dubai has its fair share of creeps.

Do all the ladies who have children never drink, then? Or is it just that anyone else in charge of your children isn't allowed to drink? I'm interested because I left my two with my sister to attend a wedding last summer and it would never have occurred to me to instruct her not to drink while my children were in her care. Big difference between a family member babysitting a couple of kids and a teachers professional responsibility to a large number. I just find it strange that people cannot say no to alcohol for a few days, even when offered you don't have to accept especially when, if something does happen, the school out here may get rid of you. I'm sure KHDA/Ministry Of Education would take a dim view if teachers are drinking on school trips....

Personally, as a teacher, it's a big no, no. Do what you want in your own time, but on a trip is not your own time! Having chaperoned school trips before (especially to Europe) alcohol is often served to teachers at sanctioned socials and dinners, even when hosted by administration. I even heard of a social that was held on campus of a school and wine was served. So it definitely happens. edited by gardenlover on 15/02/2013 Doesn't mean you have to drink it! In my opinion it's unprofessional hence why I said originally "personally it's a big no, no".

You have taken on the responsibility of going on a trip, knowing what that entails and the expectations. Surely a few drink free nights is not too much for anyone regardless of how stressful things are going - and yes there are times when you are tearing your hair out....

[ Eta -[b'> a well behave child is one with parents who can be bothered to parent....[/b'> edited by Gibberish on 14/02/2013 Even the best parented children mis behave at times! I'm so fed up with so many negative comments about children. Does everyone forget they were a child once? More tolerance and manners from all members of society is the way to civility. Babies cry, children cry, life goes on. edited by Lolacat on 14/02/2013 Yes but those who actively parent do something about rather than make everyone else suffer. Also, they would not be taking children to inappropriate events/places. I"m pretty sure that if I went to a children's party boozing and cursing I would get berated because it's not appropriate. Yet there are many parents who belive that their little angle is entitiled to go anywhere despite rules or how inappropriate it may be! I don't have an issue with kids in McDonalds, but why should we, after paying 300AED for a ticket at an event, be subjected to a baby crying when it should not be there in the first place? I understand your point, and i had a child behind me (and my children) who was soooooooo excited by everything he saw he had moments of a very loud running commentary (in a strong accent). I had to laugh in the end rather than be annoyed at his excitement, it was not the end of the world and i was to busy crying with laughter anyway! Excited child I can cope with, screaming baby different story.....

There will be a great 2 hour show or movie or dinner... however, the only thing that some of you will definilty remember AND bring up in this public forum is the crying baby who has not behaved for a few minutes. Is that too hard to deal with? especially in a country with a high rate of children? What is your definiation of a well behaved child? Well if you buy tickets to a show that's clearly not meant for crying babies well yes I'll bring it up - the no under 5s was a TOTAL give away..... Exactly what right do parents have to ignore the rules just because they chose to have a baby and not leave it at home? There are way more than enough APPROPRIATE places to take babies and children, so why expect everyone to be happy about it when the parents turn up somewhere they shouldn't? I total blame the parents - they need to be more considerate when buying tickets. Eta - a well behave child is one with parents who can be bothered to parent.... edited by Gibberish on 14/02/2013

I do not believe that children should be seen and not heard although that comment should apply to some adults! Absolutely! I went to cirque du soleil last week and you'd be surprised how many adults were talking while the show was going on, another woman was having a fight with someone right behind me and screaming while the show was going on- the 5 year old kid sitting next to me though was a little angel munching on her nachos ;-) Unfortuantely you can't restrict the sale of tickets based on IQ ;) (usually I would have said to morons but I've been reading the other thread about having nothing nice to say).

Maybe some adults want to do other things than bars, clubs, pubs and restaurants? Yes, they want to do other things... pretty much everything else. That means overtaking all places (cinemas, shows, malls, parks, etc etc) But certain films and shows have age restrictions which are not adhered to. I went to Cirque de Soleil, a show which was clearly for those over 5 years old and there was a crying baby. Now parks and malls you expect to have kids.

I have always used local agents with a fully managed service. I started off with a national chain of estate agents but have since moved to an independent management service who only deal in lettings. However, I have no family that live near he property. Even if I did I would probably go down the manged route since if you get a bad tenant there knowledge and expertise could be valuable.

All appeared well organised tonight. The queue was long but didn't really take too long to get in. Even getting out of car parking didn't take long at all. The only issues I had were people constantly texting throughout the performance - very rude and annoying. Also someone saw fit to bring a baby who did start to cry at one point - very selfish. Very rude and annoying: maybe the performance was not great Very selfish: I see one selfish person in here and it is not the crying baby There are announcements not to have mobiles on during the performance. And as others have said clearly no under 5s so I assume you mean the 1 selfish person is the parent for thinking that rules don't apply to them! I paid good money to see this show. If I want to hear a baby cry I could do it for free at any mall/cafe etc. if you know it is not allowed for under 5s either get a sitter or don't go. It should not be thrust upon other to have their experience interrupted by this! And the performance was totally amazing as you would expect from Cirque.

I was swimming with my kids in the Ritz Carlton and DH spotted a man taking pics of DD and I. He called security and they brought the camera over to DH so that he could view and delete them himself....and lets just say the pics were zoomed in to certain areas and not innocent at all. In the end the police had to come and take him as he had over 4000 pics of women and children taken in various places in Dubai. He was on a tourist visa but ended up having his stay extended at the Dubai Hilton .... I am sure he was happy to finally leave a few months later. Kudos to you for getting this 'man' put away. Creepy.

Set yourself a monthly budget for all expenses and stick to it! Use cash not cards. No nipping to Costa. Make your own lunches to take to work. Look for free or cheap entertainment opportunities eg picnic at the beach, join meetup groups Bulk buy food, make large meals and freeze for later use. I believe there's a cash and carry type shop opened near the Green Community for bulk buy. Buy what you need, not what you want. Avoid 'western' supermarkets and products. Don't go over the top tho. Saving for a house is a good idea, but you've still got to live. For holidays look at destinations serviced by Fly Dubai/Air Arabia as flights tend to be reasonable. Look at booking.com or airbnb.com for cheap places to stay.
