Hi there! Have you had a tour of AH yet? They have an excellent NICU. It would be worth going in for a tour and asking for more info regarding how early you could deliver there and if they would be able to accept the babies. Good luck!

Oh how ive missed sushi! It's definitely on my after- delivery wish list! Apart from the usual concerns surrounding eating sushi whilst pregnant, it's important to remember that the rice used in the rolls can actually be the biggest cause of food poisoning. Uncooked rice frequently contains bacteria called Bacillus cereus. These bacteria can form protective spores that survive the cooking process. If cooled slowly, these spores can germinate, grow and produce an emetic (vomit inducing) toxin. Reheating rice before serving will not inactivate the emetic toxin or kill all the bacterial cells, so the rice may not be safe. If you consume cooked rice that is contaminated with Bacillus cereus toxin you are likely to experience symptoms of nausea and vomiting within 1 to 6 hours, occasionally followed by diarrhoea within 10-12 hours. The illness is short lived with recovery within 12-24 hours. Sorry to be a buzz kill but it's something to think about.

Hello Fellow Incubators! How is everyone feeling? After a couple of weeks of awful 24/7 morning sickness and a dose of laryingitis, I am feeling great! I'll be 37wks on Friday so the countdown really has begun. Despite having terrible back and hip pain throughout the pregnancy, I still have a good amount of mobility and energy (thankfully as my 2yr old DD moves at the speed of light!). I've gained minimal weight although I was carrying a little excess before I fell pregnant due to my PND (I tend to eat my feelings!) but am planning to get stuck into the exercise once I've recovered from labour. This really helped with my PND and I'll need to be fit to keep up with the demands of 2 munchkins. Hubby is away working a lot but I have some great friends and awesome neighbors who are always there when I need them. My mum arrives next week to help me get organized but I'm determined to have it done before she arrives. This pregnancy has been a bit of a battle compared with the first but I'm trying to savor every moment of it in case it's the last (discussions for a third are definitely active but we'll see how we go). Both of my pregnancies occurred earlier than planned but we are super happy and extremely blessed at my ability to conceive by my husband just looking at me!!! Look forward to hearing from everyone. xoxo

Dogcatcher, that's some really good advice you've given. I moved over here 2yrs ago with a newborn to join hubby and was shocked with the negativity I encountered from some expats here. Hubby and I did the long distance thing for a while so he could focus on settling in here and do his training so I was lucky that I missed that settling in period. I also had our DD in Oz and he did all of that associated paperwork so it was an easy arrival for us - what a gem! It's great to get people's opinions on life here, both positive and negative, but you are spot on, it is ultimately up to the individual to make the most of this opportunity. As I mentioned, the negativity I faced on my arrival was devastating but I rose above it and am so much better for it. In a nutshell, I came here with a brand new baby, not knowing ANYONE and was determined to make friends for myself and my baby. The apartment building we were in had a Facebook page with a mums group which I quickly joined and attended one of the playdates at the pool. I put myself out there and introduced myself to some ladies and all was going well until they discovered through conversation that I was married to a pilot and BANG!!! Without a word of a lie, they literally turned their backs on me and wouldn't speak to me!!! I discovered later that they were all engineer and IT wives and felt that I had no right to live there and should be in a villa spending my days sipping coffees with the JJs! Needless to say, I didn't interact with them again and we are fortunate enough to now live in a villa in a great area with amazing neighbors who have become great friends (both EK and non EK). Hubby works very hard to provide for us so I've ensured that I've maintained my independence and have figured a lot of stuff out on my own. I try not to bug him for things or dump chores on him on his days off. Except maybe for today as he's just returned from a 9 day trip and I've been nursing a very sick DD for the last week (I'm also 36wks pregnant) so he's promised to amuse her this afternoon so I can catch on my chores (although I'm sure he will insist I have a nap!). I might just take him up on that! Anyway, good luck to the newbies joining us here. There will be ups and downs but try to stay calm and take it one step at a time. Ask your neighbors and the lovely ladies of EW for advice. You will find your feet and all will be well! Best wishes!

I just got back from registering at my choice of hospital and asked the staff about calling an ambulance if I'm in labour and my husband is not home. She said that they will take you to your hospital of choice for a fee so she suggested going to the nearest ambulance centre and asking in advance what the fee would be. Luckily for us the ambulance centre is right around the corner from us so hopefully if I need them, they will get to quickly!!! I'll come back to this question if I get any useful info from the ambulance station.

Definitely take her to see a doctor/specialist. Usual causes for ear pain whilst descending are teething, colds and flus, nasal congestion due to allergies, etc so she appears to have problems equalizing her ears. it's not normal for children to have ear pain on take-off so anyone with children who suffer from this need to seek medical advice. Good Luck.

This reply probably comes too late but you should fast for between 10-12hrs before the test. Water is allowed. 12hrs is the maximum you should fast but if you go longer, just make sure you tell them as this can impact the results.

total rubbish! When I was a trolly dolly though, they did tell us to avoid garlic as it made you a bit gaseous :) didn't stop me having a curry the night before a flight! It was essential to eat those gas inducing foods prior to certain flights to enhance your crop dusting capabilities!!! Evil!!!

Dubai security are great in regards to babies needs. Just tell them you have baby food in the bag before it goes through the x-ray and they wont even blink. I've been through many times with bottles of milk and water (more than 100mls in each) and they have been fine. Don't rely on getting milk onboard. Catering only supplies them with a couple of litres of fresh milk to serve with the tea and coffee so I'd hate for you to get stuck. The crew get asked for milk for their children ALL the time and they hate saying 'no' but they simply don't have it. I haven't seen it in Duty Free either but to be honest, I've never looked.

You need a letter confirming you are fit to fly after 28wks with Emirates for a single pregnancy. You can download the form from their website. It's best to have it as even if you are not asked at check-in, the cabin crew may ask you onboard and they do have to power to offload you. http://www.emirates.com/ae/english/plan_book/essential_information/health_and_travel/before_you_leave.aspx

We have the same problem with ours. DH pulled it apart and found a crack in one of the pipes, most probably caused by the weight of the bottles when put in. After we washed the slime off the parts (our dispenser is only 6mths old!), we put it back together, kept the power off and left it overnight to confirm where the leak was. It seems that the leaking pipe is in the refrigerator unit as it doesn't leak when switched off. If yours is the same, it's probably going to cost more to fix than it would be to purchase a new dispenser.

It's usually advised to avoid coloring your hair during the first trimester but after that it should be fine. Loreal have an ammonia free color range so if you find a salon that uses Loreal products, give them a call and see if they have your colour available. I have a semi permanent colour done on my hair and it's ammonia free (I generally get my hair done in Oz though but I'm sure they'd stock it here too). I have coloured my hair during both pregnancies and no harm done. Also I haven't looked at their home colour kits so I'm not sure about the ammonia content there. Otherwise Zen Beauty Lounge in Discovery Gardens use ammonia free products. Good Luck and enjoy the wedding!

With my last pregnancy I flew from Oz to Singapore and back at 28wks and was fine. My doctor OKed it and I stayed hydrated and ate lightly on the flight. You may still feel the usual after flight niggles (swollen feet and gassy) but if all is well in your pregnancy then it shouldn't be a problem. Listen to your body though!

Hi! Sorry for the late reply. In regards to positioning differently, I meant what kiwiwhispers said in that you reposition the handheld unit to an area where it transmits with the one in the baby's room. Just turn up the volume and you will hear it for sure. I can't recommend using the sensor pads enough!!! Especially as you are using video surveillance, the sensor pads offer such peace of mind particularly when you are sleeping.

I am planning on giving birth at American hospital in March so thank you to the OP for posting this thread and to everyone for their responses. It has certainly put my mind at ease. Was just wondering at what stage did you do a tour of the hospital and it's facilities? Do you need to wait until you are a certain number of weeks or can you just call up and book in? Thank You!

Our second baby is due in March and we wanted to get DD used to her new 'big girl' bed before then. She was more than ready so we put her in it at 21mths and she loves it!! We got a toddler bed (with the side guards built in at the top end) so she can climb into by herself and she jumps in and pulls the blankets up over herself. Originally she would stay in all night and come into our room at her normal wake up time but lately she's trying to bed hop a little (she's teething and wants cuddles) so we are having a few restless nights trying to resettle her in her bed. We have a night light in the hallway between the two rooms so she can see when she needs to come to us and of course we have put safety gates on the stairs and we close the doors to the other rooms upstairs (especially the bathrooms). To encourage her to make the transition, I took her bed shopping to allow her to try out and choose her own bed and bedding. We have been very lucky that she has taken to it so well as I have friends who almost resorted to putting their LOs back in their cots!!! Good Luck!

As mentioned below, it's totally normal. If bubs does start to show discomfort, try giving her a warm bath followed by a gentle tummy massage with some oil. Rub baby's tummy in a gentle clockwise direction and that should help move things along. I think it's more stressful for the mummies than for the babies so hang in there and good luck when she finally does let it out!!!

Is it the one with the sensor pads under the mattress? We have that one but haven't experienced any problems with it and we are in a 2 story situation too. Have you tried relocating the monitor you have downstairs to different areas. Our villa is old too and the walls are quite thick so we have positioned the monitor almost directly under DDs room but it also works near the stairs. I hope it didn't get damaged in transit. Sorry I don't know of any other brands you could try. Good luck.

I worked for Virgin for 6yrs and loved it!!! It's a great opportunity for anyone wanting to travel around Oz and meet some amazing people. It has it down sides of course but that's true of most jobs. I left just as the new EBA came into effect so the pay is a little lower than when I was there and some of the conditions have changed but all of my friends are still there so it can't be that bad!!!

Hi Mummies! How is everyone feeling? I am 21+1 today and feeling great! Baby is doing well and I'm finally getting my energy levels back (although I'm exhausted today after hosting my DDs 2nd birthday party yesterday). I was diagnosed with Placenta Previa early on which forced me to cancel any trips back to Oz but thankfully it has moved now so I am out of any immediate danger but am still taking it easy. My DD is very excited about the new addition coming (although I'm sure there will be some issues once the baby actually arrives. She loves to give the baby drinks and her dummy via my belly button and is always kissing my tummy which is adorable. Would love to hear how everyone else is going! xoxo

If they don't want to eat, it's ok as long as they are taking fluids (and not just the electrolytes). Sounds like you are doing all the right things for her. Try small amounts of banana, rice, apple and toast. Bananas and rice are binding foods and will help with any diarrhea. Try mashed banana on dry toast. Or grate an apple, allow it to go brown. Mix in a little sugar and cinnamon to taste and eat slowly. Both of these have natural pectin in them that bind the stomach and intestines. Hope she feels better soon.

OK ive put the rake down....for now. We have the same deal with our gardeners (re: replacing grass for free) but we'll give it some to recover from the summer and hopefully it comes good. We've been extra patient and understanding during the summer especially seeing as they are supposed to come by every 2nd day and they've only been coming once a week. Hopefully things improve when the weather cools down. Fingers crossed!!!

As an ex-flightie, i found it was a common misconception that all children's ears will hurt when they fly - this is very untrue. Unfortunately there is a lot of false information out there which leads parents to being overly concerned and anxious (totally understandable of course) when it comes to flying with children. It is important (especially if your child has not experienced ear pain on flights before) to remain calm and not give the child reason to worry. You will know as soon as the plane begins to descend whether you will have a problem. If your child has an ear infection, cold or flu or any type of sinus problem, then they may experience pain on descent. Your child should not feel any pain on take-off at all. Their ears may lightly pop but there won't be any discomfort As the aircraft descends in preparation for landing is when the ears begin to equalize. Some children have no problems at all and often sleep through the entire event. The pilots will usually make an announcement prior to descent so you can get yourself organized with your "tools". You have all the right ideas for helping the little ones ears but unfortunately sometimes the pain cannot be prevented, just like when our ears hurt. It's one of the worst pains ever! I hate it! If he rejects all your attempts to assist, sometimes you just have to cuddle them and let them scream it out, no matter how distressing it is for you and him (don't worry about anyone else on the plane either - they will either understand or have a whinge which you won't be able to hear over the screaming!). If he will let you, lightly press your hands against his ears as if you are blocking them and then release. This may help relieve the pressure but is also a distraction technique! Good luck with your flight, I hope it goes well for you.

Definitely start looking at changing the flights. They will not permit her to travel if she is still in the incubation period, if any of the spots are weeping, or in some cases, if she has a lot of visible spots which other pax can see. This last one is tricky as even though she might not be contagious anymore, they need to consider the comfort of the other pax and the hygiene factor (scabs falling off or weeping) and may deem her undesirable to travel. The airline will most likely need notification from the doctor stating that she is unfit to fly due to her illness in order to amend your flights (hopefully at no charge) and then another letter form the doctor giving her clearance to fly when she is well. There is a medical clearance form on the website as well so it might pay to print it off and fill it in just in case. Some airlines insist on having the this form along with the doctors letter so it can be passed onto the crew so they are informed of the situation. Good luck!

For DDs 1st birthday we had 2 parties on the one day. First an afternoon party for the kids and their parents and then our adult friends came over for a nighttime celebration. We had the BBQ running all day along with the party food. I just decorated with heaps of balloons and streamers and the kids played with DDs toys and the ever-entertaining wrapping paper! We did the birthday cake part at both parties although after DD launched into it the first time, some creative photography was needed for the second time. I'm sure whatever you will do will be great. Enjoy the day and remember to take lots of photos!

Nothing wrong with having a glass of wine after a long day. My hubby travels a lot too and I used to be quite paranoid too. If bubs is sick I won't have anything, but if she was to get sick unexpectedly and id had a drink, id just jump in a cab. If I had to take her to the hospital, I'd be sick with worry and preoccupied with her so it would be best for all if I wasn't driving! <em>edited by Giggles on 13/05/2011</em>

Congratulations on the birth of your beautiful baby girl! The fact that you are able to produce enough milk to express and feed your baby is fantastic! Not every woman can do this. I was fortunate enough that my DD took to BFing well but like you are doing now, I still ensured I had quality bonding time with her away from feeding times (skin-on-skin time, quiet time with just the two of us where I talked to her and read to her, baby massage, etc) and I believe that really cemented the inseparable bond that we now have (I know this even though she is only 18mths old). Your baby is getting all she needs from your breast milk and that's what's most important. You need to trust your motherly instincts and gut feeling and do what you believe is best for your baby, and for you. If you are stressed/anxious, your baby will feed off this vibe and will be unsettled too. If you really want to BF, by all means get some professional guidance and be open to their advice but don't let them overwhelm you and ensure you stay in control. If it doesn't work out but you are still able to provide her with the breast milk via expressing, then great! Don't beat yourself up over it. The fact that you are asking for help shows just how much you love your baby and want the best for her. Wishing you all the best.

I gave up flying with EK years ago. Cramped economy seats, surly bored crew and bumpy bumpy flights to Europe all the time. Last year by a fluke went BA and now a total convert, in spite of the strike threat. Comfy flight, cabin crew were not glam but at least you got the impression they were competent, and a [b'>smooth turbulence free flight[/b'>. I don't just look at cost, value for money is more important. You really think TURBULANCE has anything to do with the company you fly with??!!! [url=http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys.php'>[img'>http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-laughing021.gif[/img'>[/url'> I love your little mocking avatar you are really clever aren't you? [b'>[u'>Some planes ride out turbulence better than others[/u'>[/b'>. Could you please explain then? Which aircrafts ride out turbulence better? There are many factors that contribute to the aircraft handling turbulence. These include but are not limited to: &gt; Aircraft weight (inertia) &gt; Centre of gravity (loading) &gt; Density of the air &gt; Type of turbulence Also your seat position from the centre of gravity will dictate how you perceive the turbulence. The closer to the centre of gravity, the less you will feel the turbulence. <em>edited by Giggles on 07/05/2011</em>

The poor kids. What a horrible woman! We went to an Easter party at the Westin recently and as we walked to the egg hunt area, there was one particular mother who was barreling through the crowd yelling for her kids to get to the front. As disgusted as I was, I was impressed that she didn't spill a drop of her drink as she elbowed the other parents and kids out of the way!!! I was pleased to hear the staff announce that only children were allowed to pick up the eggs and that only parents of small children were allowed in and could help their LOs. My DD is 17mths old and quite small so I knew she wouldn't stand a chance against the bigger kids so we just played in the sand tisit finished. As we walked in, the pushy mum was yelling out directions to her kids so the staff ushered her away from the gate telling her she was scaring the other children!!! What really made me smile was when the staff came around and made sure every child had an egg card so they could collect some chocolates. My DD was so proud as she handed her card over and took her prize! What a great day and very well organized!

I had the same problem with DD and found the following to work well. - Gently massage and rub baby's tummy in a clockwise direction.  Place your hands at baby's navel and massage in a circular motion, moving your hand(s) out and away from the center of baby's belly. - Place your baby on back and lightly hold legs in a half-bent position.  Gently begin to move your baby's legs as if they are riding a bicycle. - Alternate "Bicycle Legs" with Tummy Massage. Bicycle Legs may also offer relief if baby is gassy. A warm bath may help relax DS and "get things moving" again.  Give him a tummy massage as you are drying him. Hope this helps!

Our babys room temp varies from 19-23 (stupid thermostat!) and she sleeps in a long sleeved onesie and a sleeping bag. She is a turner and kicker so the sleeping bag works for us. When her room is colder, we put a sheet on her and a blanket on her bottom half which she can kick off if needed. She sleeps through the night without a hassle but on the rare occasion that she is uncomfortable, she wakes up and yells out so we can go in and fix her.

There is so much conflicting info regarding this issue. If you are using only small amounts in your cooking, is should be fine, especially as your baby is over 6mths. Just monitor your baby for any reactions (excessive gas, nappy rash, etc) and if this occurs, perhaps switch to organic soy milk.
