http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flour mb this will help you, there is a table comparing different types of flour. In all the years here I haven't seen "numeric flours". British brands help by listing the protein% content. In my home country we call 00 soft flour. Numbers range from 400-550, 700-850, 1100-1600...depending od the grind, type and protein content. ps. I think spinny or even c4 have withworts (sp) pastry flour, check the protein content, but I think it should do. edited by Goose on 12/09/2013

On the other note, my oldest one came with questions yesterday. She saw front pages on the internet and TV tributes. We ended up gong through the videos, news articles and trying to be as factual and to the point as possible. While going trough the you tube, came across documentary called "The Falling Man".(named after the photo taken by Richard Drew) ..absolutely hearth breaking. It was gut wrenching to watch, and I went trough a 5 years of war once. I wish eternal peace to the souls who felt there was no escape, no hope, no help coming. Almost 200 hundred of them, they say. RIP to the all victims. edited by Goose on 12/09/2013

It happens in every City, people will settle for less. Even on this thread the OP dosent like paying more for less, but its better for her to be here than her own country so what choice does she have other than downsizing or paying more rent. There are thousands of people who can do the middle income or low paid jobs they will just replace the old with new. but how low can one go if they cannot afford to save or send money home, or even make ends meet. with current prices. As I mentioned diesel fuel price went up 25 fils. That means price of everything retail is going up, including food. As transport price is going to be recalculated. edited by Goose on 10/09/2013 I dont know. Some people seem to think going home is purgatory but if you cant afford to live in a place like Dubai then there is not much point staying. I know a few Oxbridge graduates who cant find work in the UK, are looking to move to the UAE just to get work experience they are willing to work for peanuts so I assume that there are lots of others willing to do the same. With regards to fuel price I wouldnt worry about a few fills increase, in a couple of years America wont need foreign fuel due to fracking prices will rocket globally when they are self sufficient I see your point, but i'm talking now. Fuel price here will have effect on us all, now. It will get harder for low income expats. I guess time will show. I just find this conversation sign of times. Reminiscent of similar back in 08'. edited by Goose on 10/09/2013

Super wealth spread their cash and investments around, Dubai is an obvious choice for Arabs who want to take their money out of their own country. Also buying property is a no brainer if you need to get away from unrest. Not all Libyans or Syrians can leave especially business owners. Not all properties brought are for the people they are sold too, a little google will show whos buying and who brought before. Dubai have always marketed themselves to the rich. Property prices will go up like every other city in the world unfortunately. But there are just that many super rich and rich Arabs. That money will not flow for ever. If the middle class and low income ppl are squeezed out. Who is going to pay for all those properties laying around where "rich" foot will not step in, eg. Karama or Mirdif. Imagine what real estate , transportation and food prices will do to the small and medium business. Who are making the bulk of money in Dubai and generally in all of the UAE. edited by Goose on 10/09/2013

i mean cheaper products ie, you don't see those on low incomes buy the fresh organic imported chickens at 100 aed a pop. And certain foods are control by the ministry as to what can be charged for them . edited by IzzyOnTheSeat on 10/09/2013 100 aed..lol..I buy local(dhait sp. and some other farms). contemplating buying the whole box of fresh and freezing(use to do that back home). I cook lot of local and indian food, mostly bc it is cheaper to buy those ingredients. Going "local" food wise is better for the wallet.imo edited by Goose on 10/09/2013

Regarding Arab Spring and recent influx of ppl, there is just that many ppl and/or cash, most are here, rest are gone elsewhere. What is worrying is price of food increases and inflation. It would be interesting to see how are the lowest paid expats faring these days, those who work for 600-1500 aed range payslips. Food prices must be hard on them on top of sending cash back home every month. There must be numbers somewhere showing how many ppl from subcontinent still coming over for work. It would be pretty good indicator of general state..imho. And price of disel fuel is up again, 25 fils...I imagine this will have some effect on transport and price of goods .price of food. edited by Goose on 10/09/2013 But those in the lower income brackets tend to buy cheaper food / food that has price controls on them; where? I shop at my local supermarket(not paying those spins tomato's), together where low income locals and labourers flock daily...spinneys sees me once or twice a month, C4 once in two weeks. And I live in province. Where C4 is "empty" till checks come in, be it from local employer or government. On "high" dates(which btw.I haven't seen this phenomena since leaving my home country) store has 20 ppl on a good morning in it, and one or two tills open.C4 offers bulk these days prices are up and going up. edited by Goose on 10/09/2013

Easier these days. When I came here I had to provide my parents marriage and divorce certificates to prove[b'> I wasn't illegitimate[/b'>. What happens if one is born "illegitimate"? What status that person has? just being curious... Now, it is no different between a legitimate or illegitimate child. But then, they were saying I would not have been given a visa at all. If I was born out of marriage, I could not have residence here. Once you came on your own visa, it was irrelevant. But when coming sponsored by a parent it was a no go. thanks AA.!

I grew up on this stuff and (I think) I turned out fine. And not hyperactive. These warnings always sound like fads...next week it will be something else that harms children, be it food, cleaning products, or life in general. edited by Sakhifa on 26/08/2013 I have a friend who raised her kids on the stuff too. All are overweight. On the other hand, one friend put himself through college eating the stuff and feeding his kid the same and are fine.

OP needs to ask herself why is it such a problem for her to see her husband of 20 years, going out, dinners, coffees and such, all off the suddenly, with another female. I sense overwhelming "threat" feelings, the way OP describes the situation of her DH's encounters with this female friend, and I sympathize with her. on the other hand, one doesn't wake up one day(20 y of marriage) and realize "I really really dislike my husband having female friends". Especially if he never engaged into friendships with opposite *ex....and yes IMHO, it all has to do with major trust and insecurity issue.Male-female friendship aside, something is seriously off tangent here. Intuition, the guts sounds like OP got her alarm bells going off.

I don't believe for one moment that humanity has changed that much in past 30 years and that there are more or less sickos out there, paedophiles, child abductors, rapists, abusers. They were there just as they are today. "back In the good old days"...simply it was not acknowledged, victims didn't come forward, it was swept under... As we seen from recent years and CC scandals or Magdalene laundries to name the few. And I am for one, glad we are "in your the face" with the abuse. That is the only way to fight it. And tell the kids they haven't done anything wrong and have nothing to hide. And parents have a chance to be informed and do something about it.

One day you hear how parents are overprotective nowadays, and how lives were so much carefree "back then", and how kids brought up in a carefree life grew up to be perfectly good adults And then you hear stuff like this..... the problem with "back then in the day" at least for me, is no one was talking about this, it didn't "exist "or it was swept under...only now, in my adulthood, we can openly talk about these things...and to think this went on, back in the day, and kids suffered in silence...

I think you will find that someone [i'>could[/i'> be charged, if their untrained interference was directly connected to the death, without which the person would not have died. So, giving water to a person who ha been hit by a car, dragging them somewhere etc could have the outcome that they die. It is not a case of you [i'>will[/i'> be prosecuted. First Aid training provided to the larger public teaches and fights exactly these kind of things... Sitting ppl up, giving water or moving ppl out of the vehicles...recognizing injuries etc..

Coming from the country where u can not graduate elementary school without Frist Aid training, or gain driving licence without passing Red C/C standard First Aid in front of three Dr. panel, I find this very disheartening. Children participate in First Aid competitions every year. Of course there is Good Samaritan law, so much so, that if u don't help, even if all you can do is calling ambulance, police or fire fighters, u could be held responsible for not helping, completely opposite it seems. I guess one can do so much, as one of the posters said at least be with the victim, call ambulance and protect from the rubberneckers.

as a landlord, property agents / real estate brokers / or whatever it is that they like to call themselves are in it just for the money! apologies if i've offended anyone with this generalisation but for a person who has been burnt once already i just haven't, in my five years as a landlord and ten years as a tenant, met a single honest agent/broker yet! I never thought I will be defending the real estate, but really, they are in for the money! And you are in for what exactly? That is not to say there are some less then savoury types out there, scams, money down the drain loses, and how the whole thing(property market and renting) is regulated, leaves a lot to be desired... I guess there is always the choice of letting the property yourself or/and using agent/agency. It's not like LL's have no other option. Part and parcel of running the rental property.

If your maid has absconded and has taken her passport with her (this happened to me once) you can still report her to immigration and place a ban on her. You will, however, receive a nice lecture about keeping your domestic staff's passport secure. I had removed my maid's passport from my lockbox because the following day I was going to immigration to renew her visa, meanwhile, she found it, took it, and during the night, ran. so, one will get earful and a lecture, but u can nevertheless, report the absconding of staff to the immigration..

Immigration will always tell you that you should keep a hold of your maids passport. If she absconds and you dont have her passport when you report her, get ready for an ear bashing at immigration. then my next question is, can u still report staff of absconding, even with a copy of the passport, (a maybe certified copy of the said passport) and have immigration process the request?

we all talk about this on the board , and it is being repeated "it's the law, immigration says," . All I'm asking to point out the article of the law...that's all. For years, we all read on the EW, how one should confiscate the staffs passport and keep it. I'll try looking it myself for time being, if anyone can quote the specifics, that would be great!
