My DD had it a few weeks after she was born. Do they screen all newborns here for cystic fibrosis? That is one of the things tested with heel prick test..Normally. http://www.nhs.uk/chq/Pages/818.aspx what was the problem? edited by Goose on 23/05/2012

I bought a few items from Pottery Barn and when I got home was looking over the receipt and noticed the price on the receipt was 40 AED higher than the sticker price said so a couple of days later I went into the store with the sheets and receipt to either get a 40 AED refund or credit towards my next purchase. Get this....the manager told me he couldn't refund the difference as the cause was "human error". Someone had priced the sheets wrong. After laughing, I asked to speak to the country manager - was put through to some "manager" in Kuwait where he confirmed no refund - human error! I was in the Pottery Barn sometime last year in the MCC branch...just as they opened in the morning...and manager was giving instructions to the staff on new refund policy ..I over heard them changing it to in store credit..till then u could get your money back within certain time frame... In the States refund policy is completly opposite to branches here...u can get your money 30 days after purchase...go figure...

Having been bitten a couple of times after moving here, I always ask about the return policy now. Despite this, still had a bad experience in Tchibo MCC recently. I brought a set of those plastic things that keep half an onion and lemon fresh in the fridge. Got home to find that half of the lemon one was missing. Took it back 3 days later and got the third degree as to why I hadn't opened and checked the box before buying and why I hadn't come back the same day!!! It took 30 minutes to get them to agree to exchange it and even then they tried to bully me by having the security guys come and inspect the item (Only 7 dirhams but at that stage it became a matter of principle) My DH use to laugh at me, when I would ask in store, to plug in the device or anything electrical to see if it works....this was prior and/or any consumer rights in my old country.. When we moved to France, I did the same, few odd looks here and there...Then we moved to Dubai to find consumer service and consumer rights to be bit different to say at least... I never buy anything here before checking, and checking again...and always ask for refund policy...old habits die hard I supose... All I'm gonna say, give me American customer service any day...

....DD (7yo) has been playing really well with a girl (9 yo) in the same apartment block since we moved to KL in Feb. Her friend comes most days to play after school. It's lovely watching them laugh, play and be silly together over nothing and everything....they seem to click and share the same sense of humour. Unfortunately, having got on like a house on fire with her friend for a few months, we found that they will be leaving the country (going back to Dubai) end of June.... DD seems to accept this and seems happy to still have fun and play with her friend until she leaves with no holding back...... The other day at the super market, DD thought to buy an extra croissant for her friend, "because she's from Belgium".....when she offered it....."I only like chocolate croissants".....ok, never mind, I thought. Yesterday, DD reminded me specifically to buy a chocolate croissant for her friend because "she likes those croissants with chocolate in the middle......."...so we did....she offered it..."I don't want it.".....WHAT? I thought....then look of disappointment on DD's face....as I observed the conversation between them, I was thinking how ungrateful and inconsiderate..... ...anyway, just sharing and venting....not sure what, if anything, can be done here as a mother....I guess she'll figure most of it out herself and learn what she needs to learn from life's experiences... Thanks for taking the time to read my rambling. Mb you see these things happening now, as u are watching them closely...it can not be that bad if they played and enjoyed each others company so far. Kids react differently to the changes... As for girl comments....[b'>kids[/b'>(boys and girls) behaviour and coping/social skills/language/manners etc. reflects their parents, treatment and behaviour they receive at home.IMHO

I got idea from Pinterest too, make story stones, alphabet stones.. my boy is 3.5 too...he had lots of fun getting a big cardboard box from ace stretching it out , and drawing roads, homes, trees...and playing with his cars..even setting up Ikea train tracks on it.. i'm sure I have more ides..just can't remember all of it now.. edited by Goose on 18/05/2012

Maybelline and Cover Girl are not that common here. Clinique is easy to find but I don't know about the price as I don't use that brand. I do miss going to Target and browsing the aisles for the latest colors of nail polish, lip gloss, or eye shadow from Maybelline and CG. Sometimes I find it at Spinneys here but it's VERY limited. Not like the huge aisles you'll find in the states. Maybelline is actually common IMO, just passed big display table/shelf at Carrefour this afternoon, at the entrance..I believe they have regular shelf in the cosmetics dep. But, agree for Cover Girl, I don't think I ever saw it here... ;) edited by Goose on 17/05/2012 Yes, I meant CG wasn't as easy to find. Hey all, We're getting ready to move over to Dubai from the US anytime in the next 4 months and I just wanted to know what I can expect to see over there by way of familiar US supplies? I normally use Clorox Clean-Up, Windex, Swiffer Wet Jet (not so much the ones that you tuck the wet cloth onto), Charmin toilet tissue. I'm not too picky on laundry soap. Stopped using Tide about a year ago because they want $15 for a 32 load bottle. That's highway robbery! Now I just use Era. Those who have pets....is Wellness pet food available over there? Crunchy or wet. I'm guessing they have the "pharmacy brand" US makeup over there--Maybelline, Cover Girl, Max Factor, ect? Any Clinique and Estee Lauder users...is the price comparable, that you know of? I'm trying to figure out what I should stockpile and bring with me. What is the average number of times a day you guys clean your floors and dust? Thanks all!!! :D Clorox is available here,Windex too..U will find most washing detergents are powder, liquid ones take small portion of the shelves. Clinique and Estee Lauder are available at least in Sephora...don't have dogs, but pet food is easy to find... I would say if u guys do crafts, even occasionally I would stock up with everything u can think of! definitely spices u normally use, even chili mix.. bed linen..especially if u gonna bring your own bed from usa..beds/mattreses are different sizes here..id say good towels are easy to come buy, but you will pay much more then in states...so bring them too..IMO bbq, even garden sets to sit, table chairs, lounge...choice is limited,, and u pay much more here.. even places like pottery barn and crate and barrel charge u more here...i calculated up to 30 % more on some items..but to their credit they have good sales(for Dubai) Clothes for kids, summer clothes especially, even if it means buying size up...weather is good practically year round...even clothes for you... any treats u or your family likes...anything apple. thats all for now :)

agree primrose, good question...why Greece?using the country to set the example?! Italy is in a far worse debt and problems...and to pretend no one knew for decades what was going on in Greece, and how books were cooked(as they claim now, for the benefit of certain creditors in order to borrow even more?!) money was given out left and right, but money was still borrowed and used to grow some EU countries economy's, loans were given to buy all sorts of things, including financing the Olympic Games ...hmm As for nepotism and corruption...in my own country our ex prime minister is on trial for bribe received from reputable companies from EU....hmm..and there is more to come it seems, and involves Germans, Austrians, Finns, Hungarians.... we shall see.. I wish all the best to Greek ppl. edited by Goose on 16/05/2012

I'm from Croatia, and it was pretty much normal when I was born 30+ odd years ago..got mine done when I was 2-3..my Mum did it..with other women present... there are ppl now days who do not allow family traditions influence their decisions and their children, so they do not do earrings, some ppl still do... Impossible to know without being there - but I think it may have been a misunderstanding. I think she may have been being sarcastic. An example: Every time i speak to my father he tells me how much my little sister looks like me. I always say something like "heaven help her", and he will say sarcastically "yes, the poooooor thing!". He is being sarcastic - his reaction is mocking me for saying that she is unlucky because he believes I am beautiful and she is lucky. Possibly the lady meant the same thing? I have to agree, she said "poor thing" rolled her eyes and smiled? It really sounds like she was giving you an actual compliment, as in she was sarcastically saying "poor thing" and smiling to show you she actually meant "lucky wee boy". no she didn't ,she was being class A b****....I was just stunned at the moment and couldn't react fast enough... and to be honest saying anything to her, would not make any difference(when I think back)...it feels like getting down on her level...and that is not what I wish to do...she must have very miserable life to lash out like that.

"Compliment" involved my DS and indirectly myself.....her comment followed after I made some affirmative lines, if not compliments about my DS concerning his blue eyes and his looks in general (we were all talking about kids and "family genetics" that were passed down)...she said and I quote "poor thing" in the sense "to have me for the mother" and obviously my genetic material...the way it was said, the manner, body language and piercing words, did not left any room to be labeled as lost in translation. Not to mention bit of the "awkward silence" that followed. Do you consider that a backhanded compliment? yeah I know... Isn't a backhanded compliment when someone says something nice to you whilst also implying a negative thing? For example: "You look great today compared with yesterday." Isn't what she said considered an insult or have I gotten it all wrong? She said it as "joke" with big smile on her face..does that counts...

Is it really that much different from our home countries? Do any of you come from a country where most of the produce you eat has not traveled several hours? It's a mixed bag, lots of stuff is imported particulary for big cities, but smaller communities still grow most produce themselves, especially in the state of the economy that has hit hard lot of ppl around the wordl and back home . It takes about 25 minuts for me to get stuff from my mothers country side home and farm...I also can and do get fresh meat, dairy and fruit from other neighours.Or just go to the fresh frusit and veg market in the town. I grew up eating with seasons and would love to continue and maintain that.In fact prices in the middle of the winter for certain products make it easy.I have no problem with all year round fruit and veg...just find eating with seasons working better for my family.eg.have no desire buying cherries for whooping cca.70 aed a kilo. It's winter, oranges, manadrines and winter apples and pears work just fine.

Sadly no market here in the villa, there is a supermarket Thomsun at Skycourt towers adjacent to the Al Ain road, I go to Spinneys Silicon Oasis 7 min drive (big fab one at Cedre villas or smaller by Semmer villas) or for a big shop c4 at Mirdif. isn't a spinneys due to open in the villa soon though? those were the rumors last year... yeah, it was suposed to be open this spring...now there is a talk it will be another year...Dubai time I guess. To us is no issue so far, the supermarket is a short drive form the community, like a drive to Marche in the ranches where we use to live....C4 is 20 min down the motorway.
