Ron Paul is the only credible person there. He was the only one in the recent debates who basiclly said no new wars, rest would jump at the chance for a new war.Don't particularly like warmongers.

1. I agree with Simples. You can't keep germs away from a toddler....they attract them like magnets. They need them to build up their immune system. 2. I also agree that I find wearing someone else's slippers pretty gross. 3. I would also never be so rude as to ask my friends / guests to remove their shoes before entering my house. If I was so precious I wouldn't have invited them round int the first place. but u see there is no[i'> right[/i'> or wrong here(at least I like to think there isn't), It is a clash/mix of cultures I supose..I grew up same as some other posters, taking ones shoes is normal and it's not even specialy pointed out . It is just understood.I was horrfied to see ppl walk in thier shoes straight into thier homes, when visiting some western countries back many moons ago. I have learned since, and will go with the flow, I understand the differences. I would not dare leaving shoes on my feet back home, unless hosts absolutely insisted for whatever reason...that would be so rude, to walk in and keep walking in my hosts house in my shoes...unimaginable..just make sure your socks have no holes and feet are clean ;) ppl will generaly have tolerance for newbies/foreigners who don't do "taking ones shoes" as my family and friends had for my north American DH...:)my mum eventually got some house slippers for him to keep in her place...he loved it..

This is a really interesting thread... Obviously everyone won't stay for ever so whats your future plans? To move home? To go somewhere else? I know people who have been here years who have not saved, not because they couldn't but they decided to live the expat/dubai lifestlye to the max and spend spend spend, I wonder now years on if they wished theyd saved? I'd like to go home soon... I actually think the opposite to what someone wrote about here, I want to go home and think I'll have better schooling for my children, much better (and cheaper social life) to see extended family members, cheaper electric bills, hopefully more time together as a family, less daily stress (than Dubai offers) We never really came here for the lifestyle or sunshine or...we were transfered by company. We also think we are far better off at home, (not to mention finacially) then here, in more ways then one. we do not own loans, no debts, live comfrotably, pay all bills on time...still we are leaving... edited by Goose on 13/01/2012

I guess I must be odd man out, this place is like 3-4 times the amount in cost of living than where i am from in the USA. Food, our cars were about 10000-15000 more here than in usa...housing and schools are four times the average....and the income is not four times bigger....? that is the point about savings....how do you all do it? That is an excellent question! For some of the reasons(and some others) above mentioned, we decided its time to go....it does not make any sense anymore, to fund this lifestyle here. Even with taxes payed, insurances et all...we will come out better in States then here. had to add, every situation is unique...so is ours. edited by Goose on 13/01/2012

Poor Goosie. Someone's saying boo to the goose. The US has 300 million people, 50 states, hundreds of cities and thousands of suburbs. Some have crime and are dirty and have poor schools. Most are clean and safe and have decent to excellent schools. It's all about where *you* move to. You'll be fine. Just do your research beforehand. Are you looking for older or newer suburbs? Most public (state) schools in most suburban jurisdictions will be perfectly acceptable and most of them will also offer accelerated programs if you have a particularly bright child. Some suburbs and neighborhoods will be known for top rated schools that are academic powerhouses, if that's important to you. Looking for established community that has schools with proven track record.Kids will be attending public school. I'm more inclined to move to Austin, but DH wants back to San Antonio...

Private schools are definitely NOT the norm in the US. Most children attend public schools and many states and cities have excellent public schools. But there are also magnet schools and charter schools besides the public and private schools. You also need to remember that a state like Texas is HUGE. It is close to 700,000 sq kilometers where UAE is only 83,000 so there is a drastic difference in topography, people, cities, etc. Texas is great state and one of the perks about living in TX is you don't pay any state income tax. Yes,Texas is huge, found out by driving from the border of Oklahoma to San Antonio and Austin...Loved the hill country!:)

Absolutely hilarious... If someone wants to convince me that countries like Germany, France did not know whom they are borrowing money...and funded their own economies for decade or so, living of those interest...and now are crying foul...bc..wait a minute...there is no money...It's all those Greeks, Italians, Spanish fault... really... If I was Britain, I would not want the tab for bad judgment and greed.

I apologize, but I don't have positive outlook on this subject. We have no intention of buying here now or ever. However it is true everyone circumstance is different. We are looking to buy or build in the future, just not here, for many reasons. It is predicted that prices are due to drop further in the States( 20 to 30 %) in the coming year, and will definitely have influence around the globe. Also the situation in EU is not looking bright at all....all said, we strongly believe it will have some influence on the prices here and it might come as a strong opinion, but I think(just and opinion) ppl buying here will have hard time regaining their purchase price in the future. also it would be of utmost importance to put numbers down, the yearly municipality fee payed on the purchase price or whatever owners pay to local government, maintenance, developer fees, HOA fees(which are huge here), utilities are only going to go up...and measure that up against renting. Hope it helps. edited by Goose on 07/12/2011

I grew up having cooked lunches at school.Never really heard of packed school lunch boxes till much later in life. And now due to the circumstance, I'm packing them daily. Fish on Fridays, chicken Milanese, stews and soups with semolina dumplings, stuffed peppers or stuffed sour kraut leaves, mash potato, rice, fried eggs for brekkie with fresh milk, fresh cottage cheese and sour cream(not what is being sold today in stores, at least not what I know as cottage cheese)pate and cheese, fresh furi, apples, grapes, pears, bread butter and jam with tea or hot chocolate, custards, semolina and puddings, fresh natural yogurt, green salads, mixed salads, fresh made chocolate cakes, meals consisted of three courses, last one being desert...and of course having second helpings was standard. Everything was cooked at school kitchen, never heard anyone ridiculing or making fun of kitchen staff. edited by Goose on 29/11/2011

So I sent the seller an SMS asking if I was doing something wrong, and that was why it wasn't working. She replied saying she'd had the same issue the last time she'd used it but switching it all off, then switching the baby unit on before the parent unit sorted it out. ?! I tried this and it still doesn't work. Now I'm thinking she knew it wasn't working when she sold it to me :\:. DC u might be better off buying new one, this one will be just a source of frustration,u don't need that now.Put it to lesson learned.

I am an American mom (born & raised in USA) married to an American hubby (born & raised in USA) with an American 5 year old girl (born and taken away from USA when she was 3). She goes to DAA and we are very happy with the school. It very closely resembles a "high end" American school and there is a strong preference for teachers that are American (as you would expect for the curriculum taught) but they have wonderful teachers from everywhere and a great international feel too! There really are not that many Americans in Dubai (we only represent 1.5-2% of the population) so don't expect to find your countrymen's children gathered in groups at any schools. [b'>You may find one or less kids in a classroom that are from the USA (not just have the passport). [/b'>edited by americanfamily3 on 18/11/2011 do you mind clarifying the bold print?TIA Also I fail to understand the refrence of being born in usa in connection to attending american curric. based school overseas.Must be thick brains day today...

Technically there is nothing wrong with Dubai water, it just tastes horrible! I cook with it, but can't drink the tea made with tap water. Again, 'technically' you are right that when it leaves the plant it probably is ok to drink. Those of you who do drink with it, cook in it etc...do you regularly check or clean your storage tank? Do you know the state of the pipes in your villa/area? Having seen what I saw, I could never in a bazillion years drink it... just wondering how you're so confident that it's safe? yes, I have seen our tank in the ranches more then few times, due to the repairs. No gunk, or dead stuff, or anything out of ordinary...never been sick or got water related illness., no hair fall(other then what is considered normal and seasonal) or any members of my family. We are cooking, cleaning, bathing, showering, brushing teeth, drinking tea and coffee with tap water. we are in the new place(brand new villa) so far no issues either.

There are millions of phd's who are raising their kids at home, [b'>putting their working lives on hold to nurture the next generation. [/b'> This kind of statement can be offensive to working moms too. Just because we CHOOSE or have to work full time, doesn't make any of the working moms less nurturing. see this really bothers me, bc my mother choose to work, and many other things in life, that made me resentful of her. She made us all wait till she was pursuing her happiness and escaping her daily grind with family and kids by going to work. And no, she was not nurturing. That is not to say all working mums are like that. My working mum certainly was not nurturing. To go back to my original post on this thread, there is no win win,IMHO, everyone situation is different, we all try our best. To some their working mum is a hero, to some it is not.I understand my mother better thses days, but understandig does not fill the void she left behind, not just yet.

I don't think its a luxury - I paid for it myself, working two jobs and frankly, I still owe about $20k and I'm nearly forty! Plus, I worked really hard - it didn't come easy. I joined the army because I couldn't get into a decent college straight out of high school and then I worked my tail off to get into a great grad school. No luxury. While my friends were out playing and partying, I was in my room studying. You don't have to have a good education to be successful, but it makes it a whole lot easier to choose a profession you love. Nothing wrong with wanting to work. It's a choice. We live in the world of choices.Choices have consequences(more so when u start a family), u can not escape them. Some are good, and some are not so great.

The "ultimate" win-win situation for mothers and fathers IMHO is very clandestine...I'm not saying its not there, its just rare...Something has to give.Either u are sahm or sahf or career mom or dad, or both at the same time. It's about making the best of it.What ever choice any of us makes, it will have effect on our children's lives. Those are personal decisions. But to pretend there will be no influence..hmmm I do think that position of a woman as mother, has been long time put "down" at the expense of making women independent(taking in the account the history of women's rights and movement).Future research will tell us more as to what happened to the kids and families bc of this social change. We do live in the world, or at least some parts of the this world, where u can make a choice.Couple decades ago, that was not all that possible. I was one of those kids whose mom was never around, single for a while, she was the liberated generation, pursuing career and education. Her choice.Rarely home.Working shifts. That partly influenced my decision to stay at home with my kids for a while. That was my choice.I do worry what example I will set by not pursuing my choice of career and how will this influence my kids. I did not give up my dream job just yet, it's on hold. My DD did ask me few weeks ago, Mum, is it better to have kids first or make money?

That's what I thought too...anyways, there is plenty of pumpkin's to be found, clean them, slice them, put them in the baking tray with little water, cover in foil...let them sweat for couple hours in low heath...mash them up, boil over(it will still have some liquid) and freeze.

Frozen butterballs are around whole year in C4. Canned cranberry products, same.Normally I relay on Spinn. for fresh cranberry's. Pumpkin, I normally buy ahead, already stocked up from Park and Shop(both marche and spinnieys have them too), but as it is around here, stocks get(and do) depleted very fast when big hols are approaching, so I made my own pumpkin puree and froze it few times, btw. making your own pumpkin puree is very simple. btw. I thought Safestway had close down. Can someone confirm this?Or did they move location? edited by Goose on 26/09/2011
