I am wondering how much time does it take for stitches to dissolve completely after an epsiotomy. I had an epsiotomy during my delivery about 20 days ago. Though there is no pain, I can still feel the sticthes down there. They have not dissolved completely. Is it normal? Should I get it checked by a doctor? Have you booked a check-up with your OB, 6 weeks post delivery? If not, it's a really good idea so you can ask all of these questions and get a physical check while you're there. We're all exhausted in those early weeks, so it's a good idea to have a little notebook handy to write all of these questions down. Then you won't forget anything during the appointment. :D

We're slowly getting there with the whole foods, Green-ish. She is far more adventurous than I am and to be honest I think I've been holding her back in the food department. DH will hand her whole foods, I freak out, but DD handles it with ease... mostly, not all the time. So I think I'll do what Kiwispiers suggested and order a low sodium meal for her, plus i'll have some fruit and snacks with me as well. Told a friend of mine what I plan to do and she said to leave it to her to secure me an additional meal for myself. ;) Thanks so much everyone for all your help!!! edited by shellly on 09/10/2011 :D I hear you on the freaking out! By baby number three I had relaxed somewhat and her second solid meal ever was a whole chicken drumstick. Closely supervised of course and nasty pin bone pulled out, but she LOVED it and gummed at it for a good 30 minutes. :) Hope the flight goes well...she'll love sharing Mummy's food. :D xxx

you might want to give this a read, [url=http://wholesomebabyfood.momtastic.com/news/2008/01/stevia-in-baby-foods-substitutes-for-sugar/'>stevia-in-baby-foods-substitutes-for-sugar[/url'> if its just for the pics, I'd just skip the sugar completely and not worry about the taste or just bake a normal cake (use raw sugar, maple syrup, date syrup etc if you want) and give her vegies for the rest of the day ;) I'm super @nal about what my wee guy eats and even I let him eat some of his birthday cake, (although used only natural food colouring.) Interesting reading. Thanks. I did a bit of searching and only found 'discredited' anti-stevia papers. I'm also very careful about what I give to the little ones and generally stick to apple juice or occasionally real maple syrup as sweeteners. these are essentially sugars too though, hence suggesting Stevia. I'm a little hesitant to be 'terrified' of Stevia based on that article because the author goes on to recommend Agave. They make a good point though...stick to the tried and tested...raw sugar, apple juice, honey (after 12 months!) and maple syrup. edited by Green-ish on 09/10/2011

The tap water is perfectly safe to drnk here, it's just a matter of choice. It may be safe when it leaves the treatment facility, but there's no was I'd drink it after seeing inside the water tanks on our villas!! Dead birds and rats anyone? Inch thick layer of goo perhaps? Eeeeww!

How much longer before you fly shellly? Can you start her on more 'whole' foods rather than mashed? Mine was on big pieces from 6 months, so at nearly 1yr it's certainly safe for her. That will then allow you to just pack a sandwich or ten, take some healthy snacks or feed her from your tray on the plane.

I agree with Kells...with that age gap, a good, sturdy double will occasionally come in handy. My daughter turned three not long after the birth of her little sister and both would nap in the double buggy on longer outings. Having a light single is great for quick trips out. If you'd prefer to buy just one, I highly recommend the Peg Perego Aria Twin. It takes a car seat for the newborn, both seats fully recline, it's really lightweight and easy to open/close, great storage underneath, fits through all regular doorways. I often took it even if I only had the baby with me. The second seat comes in very handy for all of the *stuff* you always have to carry. :) Mine was a second-hand bargain. Not sure if you can get them new there any more. Maybe try Mamas & Papas. (I hate my Phil & Ted...but everyone is getting bored of me whining about it. ;) )

There's another trendy sugar substitute doing the rounds too...agave nectar I think. I know little about it except that lots of people have switched thinking it's better for them. All I know is that for diabetics, it's actually worse than refined white sugar! Don't use agave. ;)

Thanks Green-ish! I'm currently in Oz so where would I find Stevia? What does the packaging look like to help me find it on a shelf? Yeah, thats my last resort - to bake a normal sugar filled cake and put it down to the 'once a year' treat! :D edited by shellly on 09/10/2011 Stevia is near all of the artificial sweetners, either in the sugar aisle or near baking specific stuff...you can buy a powdered form of which you use a little less than the same amt of sugar, or there are little tabs, like those hideous Sweet n Low things. ;) I bought mine at Woolies. Have seen it in Coles too. Mine is Nativa brand... http://www.natvia.com.au/ :D

shellly...can you buy stevia over there? Organics might stock it. It's a plant extract that's an excellent substitute for sugar - No GI so it doesn't mess with blood sugar levels (like sugar and - no calories :D - lowers BP and improves digestion - 100% natural and safe even for little ones. :) (I'm on a health kick at the moment so have done the research!) Otherwise, bake an over the top, rich and decadent, sugar laden death-by-chocolate, and let her enjoy a smushing a slab all over the place...it's only once a year. ;) edited by Green-ish on 09/10/2011

Bronzey colours preferred, any of the 'flip flop' styles, not white if possible; Size UK8/US10. Thanks again! Just got back, those one in the stall are look-alikes, not the real thing, not bad but they don't have the super sof sole like Fit Flops. Sorry, dogs aren't that smart (none of them) that they do things for revenge. Check any changes in food or home circumstances, they are the two biggest triggers of changes in behavior (including elimination). Is there someone new in the house, have you changed the food recently, have you changed the dog/person routine recently? If none of the above apply, go to the vet and try to determine why this behaviour has emerged. Punishing the pet (or scaring it by chasing it around with slippers) will accomplish NOTHING except instill fear into you actually entering the home. Why not chase an 18 month old child around with a slipper because it didn't go potty correctly? Same same/. Dogs r very smart, and we should never underestimate their intelligence...it's ABC behavior when a dog is upset wit u they do wrong things around the house. If they weren't smart then how come they work wit the blind, or rescue people, or worked wit police? And the fact that it was the part where Khatoon sits at is a sign that the dog knew what she was doing. Is ur dog used to being alone? ... It may be in your wording Jesskerz, but you are making it sound like you think the dog actually has a human-like thought process about all of this. In the dog's 'mind' all it knows is that things are quieter and more lonely in the house than they have been for a week or so and that's stressful for the animal. Yes, they make mistakes/have accidents when they are under stress but it is not a conscious decision. The dog does not (cannot) think, "She left me alone so I will poop on the couch." It's much more basic, primal and stress-level related than that. Dogs are brilliant in rescue, police work, as companion animals and customs animals etc etc because they have amazing trainers who understand dog behaviour and who train them to follow very simple, very specific cues. It's amazing, but it's not rocket science and it's not because the dogs are canine Einsteins. edited by Green-ish on 09/10/2011

11 hours is an awfully long time for any dog to be alone in a house :(. She has just had 10 days of company with her all the time and I bet she enjoyed it immensley. Dogs are pack animals not solitary. It "could be'' that that is her frustration on being alone again. You could try doggy day care a couple of times a week and possibly have someone come in around 2 to take her out....does she have a doggy door so she can get out if she has to go to the bathroom? Exactly what I'd suggest Sue. Especially in a wee (needy!) breed like a Pom...the poor dog needs some 'pack' interaction during those 11 very long, lonely hours. I also think this accident happened because she is not happy being alone again. Again I stress it's not on purpose, and I agree that dogs do not seek revenge. we have to be very careful (for our own sanity) to avoid humanising them and their behaviours. Yes, they are smart, but they are DOGS and think like DOGS.

I'm afraid I have no suggestion as to why she did it, but I hope you realise... a. She did not do this on purpose. Don't take it so personally. If she has never done this before, it could be a one off accident, or even a health issue... b. Screaming at her will have absolutely zero positive outcome. I hope you have calmed down. All that negative/aggressive energy is going to make any problem worse. I also hope someone comes along soon as is able to suggest what to do next.

... I am sure they would be ok if people kept feeding them ... This is the concern I have that I'm trying to address on the other thread. I just can't imagine why FF's would recommend feeding any bin cats, let alone ones you have no intention of getting neutered. Neuter Mum...absolutely...but have a plan to catch and neuter the kittens too if you plan to feed them. ETA - kittens *can* be neutered from as young as 8 weeks so if Mum has left them behind, they are old enough. edited by Green-ish on 08/10/2011

well of course people shouldn't just feed them, that's beside the point then isnt it... at the very least stop them having more offspring and eventually (if people stopped dumping pets) the population would hopefully reduce over time. If it could be more controlled, like in Turkey, it might be more successful. Strays there belong to everyone , and the government or council (or whatever it is there) neuter & release them. they all seemed healthy and well looked after, certainly no "mangy" strays amongst them like here in Dubai. I don't think it is beside the point. I think it's a very important point. There are many, many people in Dubai who feed bin cats and do nothing about trap-neuter-release. Big, big mistake! Turkey is a whole other ballgame isn't it. The cat is a much respected (loved, adored?) animal there. Very, very different to the nuisance pest they are considered by many in the UAE and other parts of the world. At least we do have Feline Friends and others doing what they can. edited by Green-ish on 08/10/2011

so if people shouldn't feed hungry animals because "it's nature" then by the same reasoning, the famine in Africa is 'natural' and people shouldn't help the hungry starving people there. Of course that's TOTAL RUBBISH!! So why is it any different for a cat? People, cat, we are all living creatures and all worth something, even if some people do not treat them like the same. Leaving the starving people in Africa out of it... In my opinion, there's a middle ground to consider. The vast majority of the cats are there because people didn't take appropriate care of their domesticated pets. Those 'pets' have, over time, gone feral and bred in huge numbers. In nature, animal populations are controlled by a number of factors...one of those being the availability of food. When times are tough and food is scarce, wild animals simply don't produce offspring in the same numbers as during times of plenty. Older, weaker or sicker animals die in those tough times, and the population finds a natural balance. When humans interfere and feed wild populations, what happens? Those animals increase dramatically in numbers and therefore require more feeding, more human involvement, cause more 'trouble' etc etc. If the humans who feed them stop for some reason (leave/get sick/death/getting busy/changed prorities etc) then the animals have forgotten how to fend for themselves and far greater numbers die faster than when it's left to nature. Trapping, neutering and releasing I support 100%. Trapping, neutering, domesticating and re-homing I also think has a place. 'Just' feeding otherwise wild animals I cannot fathom. Especially in the case of a non-endemic species, there is no justification for supporting the growth of their numbers. I think what Feline Friends, Kylie & her team and other rescue groups are doing is fantastic. But I think people who feed 'bin cats' without adding neutering to their 'care', are making a really irresponsible mistake. edited by Green-ish on 08/10/2011

I also agree that the work of this group and many of the other rescue groups is admirable. Those who are unfairly critical and can't see the benefit of getting these two kittens off the street, need to keep in mind that these are just two of hundreds (thousands?) that are taken out of the breeding population every year. That HAS to make a difference. The other thing the judgemental critics need to remember is that people who put themselves out for animals are generally those who also do more than the average Jo for other people. Lol...we'll have to agree to disagree on the value of the pets forum. :D We may not all like everything about the specific format of EW, but over the years I have seen lots of really happy endings and fabulous advice shared over on that other little space. ;) The 'regulars' who contribute daily to keep it fairly active might not like it publicly advertised as a "waste". ;)

These things don't work though, do they? They are just comfy flip flops? I don't know if they work or not as when I started wearing them I was going hard at the gym so had sore muscles from that anyway, LOL. But I do agree they are the most comfortable shoes I have ever owned. I used to say that about my Birkies, but Fit Flops are definitely more comfortable than them - especially in the heat. I love the choice of style you get in Dubai. In Oz you'd be lucky if they had 5 different types in the shop. Greenish are they still only sold at Athlete's Foot over there? It's probably the Westfield Rents and cost of shipping that make them so expensive. If not, then somebody is getting a bl00dy big margin! I have only seen them at Athletes Foot, and they are not available online here. I also can't get any retailers OS to ship them to Aus. The guy at Athlete's Foot also told me that only the leather versions are being imported to Aus now, so the more expensive options. Good old windbag Gerry Harvey was carrying on again last month about "sneaky shoppers" here...those who go into Aus stores, get fitted for shoes or advice on electrical goods etc, then go and source them from online stores OS. When we are literally paying 100-150% more than OS for the exact same items, why the bl00dy h*ll not?? He reckons we should be happy to pay their prices because the store rents are high and the staff well trained. Those costs are not inconsiderable to retailers. I know that. But the fact remains times are tight for ALL of us, and if I can buy identical Fit Flops or Brooks running shoes or DS games or camera equipment or cloth nappies etc etc etc overseas for less than half retail here, that's what I'll do (warranty risks taken into consideration). Same goes for a record number of shoppers in Aus in the last financial year. Sorry you're not quite raking in the usual bazillions of dollars, Gerry! OK...rambling...cranky! Lovely, lovely Simone and CT!!! Thank you girls. I'll get some details together and you can play personal shopper for me. lol edited by Green-ish on 06/10/2011

I remeber when I lived in Australia I found the cost of good quality clothes and shoes (and books!) so expensive. My brother lives there and finds the cost of the same things still really expensive compared to the UK. He and his wife now order clothes for themselves and the kids online from the UK as even with the postage he finds it cheaper than buying the same things there! It's almost frightening Genie. I still can't believe how expensive it is here now, compared to when we left 6 yrs ago. Especially where I am (SE Queensland), it used to be a really affordable place to live. We're now up amongst the highest taxed and most expensive property in the world. If I had my time again in Dubai, never would I complain about the cost of living. The only thing over there that remains somewhat of a 'mystery' to me, is the high cost of renting. I'll go and put the call out to my FB buddies...see if anyone will send me a pair of Fit Flops. :D

The original video from which that first still was taken is years old. From (distant) memory, I saw it after PETA released it as part of the continuing anti-fur coat lobby. It would be at least ten years ago (20??) that I first saw it...it's burned into my brain forever. :( I know helpless animals are being brutalised in a way I cannot fathom here, but really it's all just part of the "fake" trade. Whether it's animals skinned alive or children cruelly exploited for fake handbag manufacturers (then of course there's computer parts, chocolate companies, diamonds...) Until we educate ourselves and buy ONLY from reputable sources, these grubs will still have a reason to exploit/abuse. Just seeing that picture again, I fair nearly threw up on my computer (which is probably full of parts made by 8yr olds sleeping on cement floors. :( ).

I've obviously missed something because the thread on the main board has vanished. Does anyone know how Mickey is doing?

JS...she's doing the right thing. The vet will give her the best advice and warn her of any risks. She will make the final decision. All you did was encourage her to be a responsible pet owner. :) Fingers crossed all goes well.

The sun, my maid , the Nail Spa and guys filling your car with petrol - oh and cheap petrol. And doors that open automatically :-P *snort* to the automatic doors...what about automatic taps at hand basins? The amount of times I have stood at a sink in a bathromm in another country waiting for the water to come out...doh! :D I think Dubai gave my children a bit of a germ phobia though...they are disgusted by the thought of having to operate the restroom taps themselves. lol
