It's possible she was never actually 'domesticated' but just part of Feline Friends catch/neuter/release program. Those cats always had their ears clipped so they weren't trapped & transported to the vets again. :) I hope you find a nice home for her now that she's used to the comforts. :D

Where is the villa Scarlett? Have you asked any neighbours with gardens (or on the main board) what the DEWA bills are like? Interlock paving may cost a lot to put down, but from some of the scary threads I've read recently, that 4K could be your first DEWA bill if you install a large garden. Grass is the biggest water waster! It looks lovely, but it's a very, very expensive option in the long term. Due to high water needs in a desert, it's also an environmentally irresponsible option in my opinion. :) Fake grass is great...but you need a good quality one to last in the extreme climate. It may cost as much as the interlock to put down depending on the size of your garden. Fake grass also collects all of the sand that blows around and after one January downpour, you *can* end up with a muddy mess. At our DSO villa, we sourced some cheap as chips 'blue metal' which is the gravel that is usually mixed in with concrete. We covered the whole, small front garden with the gravel, threw in a few huge, decorative rocks that my husband found on rubbish piles at building sites, and inter-planted with large succulents that DM happened to be ripping out and dumping. In the 12 months we lived there, I watered the garden maybe five times to help the plants establish, then never again. When we left, we sold it all to a local landscaper to move it on to someone else's villa. It's a shame I never took any photos of that garden...for very near to a freebie, it looked awesome. Our back sandpit was massive! We paved one large area for an outdoor table and chairs, built a pergola over that from wood found on building site rubbish piles (with appropriate permission sought ;) ), paved a few paths and built some garden beds with the same gravel and water wise plantings as we used out the front. The rest we left as sandpit under the kids trampoline and cubby house. I only watered my herb and veggie gardens (small) and few trees in pots. Our super budget, gravel garden looked a little like this but with big, architectural, spiky succulents... http://www.gardeninginfozone.com/creating-a-scree-garden-rocks-stone-and-gravel-in-the-garden edited by Green-ish on 11/09/2011

I originally came here only for a job which paid relatively well. I am now here for life. Although I am not currently working, I plan to work again in the near future and am sure that I can make more here than in my home country doing the same job. Yikes Anon...your profession must be really badly paid in your homeland then. ;) I was offered a few jobs in Dubai in the same profession and the salary was LOW compared to Aus, and we ain't well paid here either! I know different establishments will pay very differently...

Hi girls. :) Don't be too disheartened Abaddon! Lol...I originally joined this forum for local gardening advice and called myself "Green-ish" because my thumbs aren't completely green! :D I'm a self-taught, trial-and-error gardener. lol Tomatoes have never been my strong suit. You had better stop the "I wish they sold..." line of thinking in Dubai. It will drive you MAD! Lol...they are KIDDING themselves - it's laughable that Dubai considers itself the shopping capital of the world. :D Eli...Thank you. :) I love it that I'm still welcome here in my second home. lol. On lettuce, I just used to pick up cheap packets of lettuce seeds at ACE or C4...any of the 'non-hearting' varieties. You can pick from them as they grow, removing just the outer leaves so the plant keeps producing. There is NOTHING like a salad you pick from the garden and eat straight away! :D Make sure you keep the pots well watered and feed regularly. I used to buy the smelly 'organic' pellets from the plant souk and soak a whole lot of them in a bucket to make a 'fertiliser tea'...dilute that in a watering can and water early in the morning to feed your green babies. :D Oops...children awake and demanding breakfast. Happy gardening girls! OOh...before I go. I like the fertiliser-in-the-tank idea Eli, BUT be careful because not all of your plants will have the same food needs. I always find it easier to grow similar 'feeders' together and feed each pot according to their needs. :)

Interesting Abaddon...I hadn't heard of 'fabric pots' before, apart from the good old hessian sack for growing potatoes. :D Just had a wee 'google' and they're great! Can you buy them in Dubai? Fabric pots are in complete alignment with my experience over there that veggies, herbs etc do better in large, deep, well-drained, UN-glazed pots. Large and deep to maintain moisture, but unglazed to allow some evaporation through the side, keeping the roots cool. I completely agree with Eli...MUCH easier to grow in pots, in a half decent potting mix. The couple of years that I tried garden beds cost a small fortune in fertiliser and water. Cheaper to shop at Spinneys than grow your own! Pots are far more efficient in that environment. I tried a few varieties of tomatoes and the only ones I had any success with were cherry tomatoes. It was just too hard to keep the water up and the pests off any of the big tomatoes. Roma tom's were a complete, dry, tasteless disaster for me. :( I'm a titch OCD ;) about my gardening and have just pulled out my Dubai planting diary. Things I had most success with over the winter, I planted from the end of Sept when the weather was really cooling off. If feeling really impatient, you could seed now and place the pots where they will only get morning sun then move them out for more sun in early Oct. Planting (seeds) now...broccoli, carrots, radish, celery, lettuce, Asian greens, peas, spinach, basil, parsley, (and from my ME gardening book, you could try kale, peas, potatoes, cauliflower...lots more if you want me to continue :D ). My tomatoes & cucumbers did better planted at the end of winter, with some shade from the summer heat. Carrots were the only things I had success with in the garden rather than pots. I never grew corn over there but it should do really well in the warmer months. One of my favourite purchases at the plant souk was a weeping mulberry tree in a huge pot. GORGEOUS, pretty tree with yummo fruit. You can't kill them (considered weeds in many countries!) and the kids love picking the berries. :) Full sun in the winter, shade for the hot months.

just to add the More debate - they have 2 types of pancakes on their menu - the Dutch thin ones in the main menu and then the realy think stack of pancakes on the breakfast menu - we love the dutch ones but ordered off the breakfast menu last time and when they can they were 4 small inch think ones Lol...I never noticed that, probably because I only ever ate there at breakfast. Maybe Annabelle09 and I are talking about different pancakes. :D I've only seen the inch thick lumps of bland dough. :D

The reason that the pancakes at More are very thin is because they are Dutch pancakes ladies, and this is how we eat our pancakes. by the way, More is owned by a Dutch family so that is the reason why some of the food is Dutch..[b'> the pancakes are amazing by the way[/b'>, just different from the "international" pancakes!! As for lime tree, I like their coffee, and their breakfast. I like their scrambled eggs to be more specific..of course, their carrot cake is sooo yummie!! if you fancy french breakfast, then Paul is a good place to go. I love their croissant and strawberry jam.. edited by Annabelle09 on 08/09/2011 lol...at the risk of another "in your opinion" argument on the thread, I think the More pancakes (pan thick-heavy-lumps-of-dough) are awful. ;)

Why not try to clean it before making such an expensive decision? Empty, remove all shelves, wash thoroughly with water & vinegar then, if it still smells, wipe it out with vanilla essence. Leave it open to dry and air thoroughly. If it's still a bit smelly, wash again with water and vinegar or vanilla, dry thoroughly then put an open pot of bicarb inside and shut the door. edited by Green-ish on 07/09/2011 Just to say - I did all of the above and more and nothing worked. But I suppose it depends if the inner workings of the fridge became contaminated, like mine did, or not. I was so reluctant to throw mine away as it was new and I could not really afford a another new one, but ended up having to. That must have been SO frustrating...still, worth a try for pascale. My fridge was once turned off by accident and left off for almost a month in summer in Aus (no AC). It cleaned up just fine and went on to give years of chilly service. :D

Thanks all!! Then the best thing i can do is sponsor a nanny on a full-time basis... just went across http://www.dubai.ae, everything seems fine but the rule says I need to have a 2-bedroom apt!!! Unfortunately we live in a 1-bed apt... would i then not be able to sponsor a maid??? If the rule says you need a 2 bed...... Can you afford to rent a place that's big enough. Whatever the rules say, she needs somewhere to sleep and call her own space. What about hiring a live-out maid through an agency? You may have to wait but there will be some with childcare experience and you could put her through first aid training etc. Probably all still cheaper than nursery. edited by Green-ish on 07/09/2011

My neighbours - a family of 8 (parents, grandparents and 4 kids) live in a one bedroom apartment.... which has been partioned into 2 bedrooms and they seem to think that this is acceptable..... Perfectly acceptable...if it works for them as a family. Grossly unfair to expect an employee to have zero privacy or time 'away' from work though isn't it?

The thing is Chocs, some people find it very motivating to have a number to chase or stick too. Some of the "silly sites and whatnot" are actually very good and teach really sensible, long term health and nutrition advice. Sometimes it's not about the foods that we choose, it's the portion size we eat. Sometimes a weight issue has nothing to do with wheat. There's no one-size-fits-all when it comes to weight loss. :) Gracie...I also meant to come back and add that those last five kilos are always the hardest to get rid of. Especially if you're exercising more than usual, you'll be burning fat but building muscle (assuming your diet is good) and muscle weighs more than fat. Stick to it, you'll get there!

I met one woman less than a month after arriving in Dubai. She had been there 13 yrs at the time and had one very young son, maybe 20 months old. I met her at a mother and toddler group and she also had her maid there. I was horrified to see her literally snap her fingers at the maid to attend her son if he was upset about anything. "I come here for the coffee and adult conversation, " she said...not even checking that her son was OK. It was a very interesting introduction to Dubai for me! Thank goodness, in five years there she was literally the only woman I ever met who behaved this way. Maybe I only surrounded myself with like-minded women who treated all around them with respect and had children because they wanted to raise children. ;)

Hi TK...I'm choosing to do this myself, drag the kids along with me and my husband can join in or not when he's home (which is only one week a month). He's supportive, but I'm not sure he'll give up desserts when he's home! People are raving about the Polar HRM's. Cheapest I have found in Aus are at http://www.thepolarshop.com.au/ . Maybe if you do a search you may find them even cheaper somewhere in Europe. Typically in Dubai, it's cheaper to buy OS and have it shipped in. I did my C25K run this afternoon (BADLY as I was too dehydrated) and burned almost 500calories!! WOO HOO! Can't wait to see how I go when feeling fitter. :D

Thank you. Fortunately it's been a relatively mild case for my toddler. We saw the Dr yesterday and he said to keep them all at home for two days. If the older two had no blisters by tonight they are probably not going to get it. He said many, many kids get it and never know it...it's so contagious and often almost no visible symptoms. Anyway, the little one is much better today but no daycare until it's all healed over.

Gracie...I've recently signed up for http://www.myfitnesspal.com/ too. I had the same problem and the only way I could fix it was to go back in and set everything back to zero then start again. I'm using the app on my android phone so only know how to reset it on that. I also find that it's really hard to be accurate with exactly what you've eaten. If you are hitting your daily intake target and exercising according to your goals, it *should* work. On the positive side, if you've lost 1kg and you only have 4kg to go, that's good, safe, maintainable weight loss. The last 5 are the hardest to shift so at least the way you're going, once it's gone it will stay gone! :)

Hello fellow 12WBTers! Sunfairy...fabulous to have another member to our rather exclusive little group. :D I wonder how many more we can bring over to our team before kick off day? (12 Sept) I'm doing all of this on a very tight budget. All of my exercise will be at home or on the streets nearby. My husband works away 21 days a month so I have the three little ones on my own. I'm doing Couch to 5K as part of my pre-season prep and will continue with that through the 12WBT. On my non-C25K days, I'm going for bike rides with the kids...painfully s l o w bike rides, but at least I'm moving. At least for you guys, you're slowly heading into the glorious Dubai/Al Ain/Doha winter. SO beautiful for exercising outdoors. I used to love getting up early in the winter and almost feeling uncomfortably cold on my walks. A real novelty over there! ;) There are only two things I'm going to buy...Aldi has heart rate monitors on sale tomorrow ($19.99/60dhs-ish) and I'm going to get some proper running shoes, properly fitted. I'll most likely go to Athletes Foot for fitting then buy the shoes from http://www.eastbay.com/ in the US as their prices are less than half the price here, even after shipping. If any of you are looking for good shoe bargains, I believe http://www.wiggle.co.uk/ , endless.com (amazon shoe store) and http://www.prodirectrunning.com are all good value too. I love the idea of a heart rate monitor because it will give me a visual number to 'chase' when I am exercising. When the going gets tough, I find it really easy to stop by thinking, "If I feel this bad, I've worked hard enough." By looking at my HRM and seeing how many calories I still have to burn, I know I'll find the energy to keep going. I'm finding the pre-season tasks on the 12WBT forum are invaluable. I am a procrastinator and fitness-quitter from way back but I can genuinely feel myself getting all mentally geared up for this. Bring it on!!! edited by Green-ish on 31/08/2011

Hi Jules...sniff, Chocs and Nomad have made a great suggestion!! Fostering would let you see how a dog fits into your life without the initial life-time commitment. My children are 6, 4 and almost 2 and it pains me to admit we are just not ready for a dog yet. Until I had kids, i had dogs all my life. We lost our last lifetime pet when my oldest child was a few months old and I yearn to have another dog. (we had one for a short time in Dubai but that didn't work out :( ) I desperately miss having a dog. I can't wait to have one again...a running companion and a furry tool for teaching responsibility to the kids. :) My children are just too young though. It's just too much work with such young kids...and we're in Australia on two fully dog-fenced acres- not on a teeny block in the sandpit. ;) Cats are WAY easier than dogs, especially when it comes to arranging care for holidays etc. With a dog, you can't even go away for one night without arranging kennels or someone to come in to feed and walk the dog. All of that said....IF you do decide to go ahead, I am a massive advocate for shelter dogs. I do somewhat understand that some people have a breed preference though (as long as they've really thought about why...essentially all dogs are [u'>dogs[/u'> first). If you have your heart set on a particular breed, you will need to start doing a worldwide search for an ethical breeder. Please do your homework and do not support a backyard breeder. No matter how well-intentioned they seem, if someone is breeding because it's fun/puppies are cute/people want the breed/we can make money etc etc, they are essentially small scale puppy mills and contributing to the high euthanasia and homeless dog stats. An ethical breeder will - only breed very occasionally - only when they have done extensive research into the dogs they use to guarantee betterment of the breed (get rid of ridiculous/dangerous traits) - only when they already have a waiting list of pre-approved homes for pups - expect to know a lot about you and your family - put a whole lot of conditions on the sale of the pup (return if re-homing necessary etc) Basically, if you don't feel like you've been hauled over the coals to prove you are a suitable owner, then the breeder is unethical. Sorry...off soapbox. :)

It's not worth the fine...aside from the fact that you clearly can't trust her. What will she take next time once she's worked out you can't/won't call the police? I particularly liked AdviceSeeker's suggestion to tell her sponsor and other employers, if you know them. You may not get your money back. You may have no legal recourse, but she must not get away with this. All of this assuming of course that she is the only possible person who could have taken the money.

I have also been here for over 10 years and it was also the "norm" when we got here, but things change and you have to change with it. Its illegal for you to be hiring her, and you will be fined if you go to the police. I had a maid steal from me in 2001 (who I sponsored) and when I went to the police they insisted that I had better be sponsoring her because if I didn't I would be in more trouble than her. Because I did sponsor her she was arrested, deported and banned, and I was not in trouble (and before anyone goes into how do you know it was really her, they were vouchers that she was caught spending). [b'>You actually have no legal recourse so the best thing you can do is confront her. Demand the money back, and let her know you will report the incident to her sponsor. I would tell her you'll be telling the sponsor to inform all her part time jobs[/b'>, and that you will report her for stealing and working illegally regardless if you get fined because its principle. But just know you can't actually do anything about it without incurring a 50-100k fine (and this was also the case 10 years ago if you were to report the incident) Yes its your fault for leaving the safe open, but its not right that she has stolen. Great advice AS!

I'm with Chocs...put the dog away and let bunny have a play somewhere safe that you know you will be able to catch it again! ;) If it's only for a few days, why bother risking injury or stress by trying to get them together?
