Enjo. I haven't been in the cleaning products isle in years... Me too. ENJO and water. If I feel the need for a fragrance, I put a couple of drops of a lovely, fresh-scented oil in the water. Scents like 'Fresh Linen' smell really clean and are not overpowering. I had to walk down the cleaning products aisle the other day and I sneezed from one end to the other!

Why is it that picking up one's own dog's poop is fine, but someone else's dog's poop is just disgusting? I clean up after my dogs fine, but feel sick if having to deal with someone else's. Lol...a bit like I have no problem with the three poopy human bottoms I have cleaned for the last six years. No problem when it's my own kids, but someone else's child...EEEWWWWW. Lol :)

Greenish - Thanks. It is now 60AUD per piece of paper!! I don't know your situation - but was the medication for the person who is on the work visa? I'm currently trying to organise my crim history check from Dubai and nearly had heart failure when I saw $60 per page at the embassy...for a stamp. FFS!!! Plus $40 at Min of Foreign Affairs! It was def much cheaper 5 yrs ago. I need to go back to work so we can pay bills and I can barely afford to pay for the paperwork so I can get to work. Fricken frustrating!! :D Yes...it was medication for my husband who had the working visa. I can't even remember what medication was.

Hi Anon. :) We had my son's 5th birthday at the water play centre (Aquaplay??) in MCC. The staff were great and management happy to tailor a party for us since I didn't want their standard 'min 20' package. We had some time in the soft play then all of the kids had a few pre-paid rides...all supervised by a staff member dedicated to us for the party. I brought in food and our own cake so it was quite affordable. They do arrange catering if that's what you want.

green-ish: have you gone through the process of having a prescription attested????? What you said, - is my understand of how it must be done. Yes...in Aus but about five years ago. Aus Ministry of Foreign Affairs here then UAE Embassy. Took about 10 days using regular mail. I think $50 all up. LOL...no-one asked to see it at the airport, but I was relaxed because we had the right paperwork.

Dragonmart...any of the shops in the fabric section will do a good job for very little money. Take your own careful measurements, choose your fabric, backing, style, rods, rings/hooks etc and they should be ready within a week. If you want them to install, you generally have to pick up the guy and drop him back...the 'price' of cheap service. Oh, and if you argue, they'll all halve their installation quote. ;) (I'm pretty sure our whole DSO villa with many, massive windows was about 2K...very basic curtains, but they did the job)

If you have a prescription you will be fine. FYI I've had this prescribed here too and carried my prescription with me at all times. If you have a prescription AND have it attested by the UAE embassy and local Ministry of Foreign Affairs before travel you will be fine. Sure, people and their prescriptions are not checked every day, but I'd hate to be the one checked by a stickler for detail and not carrying an appropriate document. An OS presciption is not legally worth the paper it's written on in the UAE unless attested.

There have been many, many discussions here in the past about the the VERY poor food handling and hygeine practices in various supermarkets in Dubai. A lot of those packaged products have no chance of getting to the consumer 'fresh' because the staff in the stores simply do not know (or care??) about correct, safe handling. And of course there's the dubious storage and handling before it even gets to the supermarket. 'Fresh' refrigerated products best avoided during summer I think!

I don't have a dog at the moment but, in the past, yes our dogs have always done their business in our garden. Is this an issue for some people? Our dogs have always been walked morning and night but I we can't expect them to hold on until it's a convenient walk time for us...surely? Especially in the heat, your older guy needs to stay close to home. :) I don't mind cleaning up my own dog's poo, at home or out and about...unlike my friggin inconsiderate neighbour who lets her ancient dog wander the streets to poo wherever he sees fit, including my front yard if the gate is open! And no, she never, ever cleans up after him!

Here they look for the measure for half an hour then say Ma'am, you can try whatever you like. Is that little shop upstairs in Bin Sougat still open? It is/was owned by British sisters and most of their staff are/were very good with fitting. (lol...long time since I've been there hence the "is/was" ;) )

Samsung vote here too. Ours is a side-by-side so I can't help in recommending a particular model. Our Samsung is almost 6 yrs old...recently we had to replace one of the heaters (?) for the auto defrost unit but that cost next to nothing and given that it has been packed upand moved four times including an overseas trip, it's a brilliant fridge/freezer.

Well, Kacie met with a lovely family Sunday out at Paws and had a lovely play. They already have a terrier with almost identical "special needs" as Kacie. So we are slowly slowly progressing. they had another good long play on our territory today, and then weds we'll send Kacie off for a play on their territory. Fingers and everything crossed. Have another potential fosterer coming out to paws saturday to meet her, so if it doesnt work out with this family, we're hoping we have a foster situation for her for our holidays over the summer. Thanks green-ish, really appreciate your thoughts. **ps: does your friend on FB have a beagle?** Yes! Gorgeous SA family. :D Wow...I'm SO happy for you (and Kacie) that things are working out. xxxx edited by Green-ish on 21/06/2011

Do any of you know if sour dough bread (the loaves they have at spinneys for example) freezes nicely? And the wholegrain, the heavy one with the whole kernels? I am so anoyed that we are wasting so much bread around our house, but it goes bad faster than we can use it so freezing a portion woulf be great.... I used to freeze all of the bread as soon as I got it home. It all thaws as good as fresh as long as it's airtight in the freezer and with minimal air in the bag. I found the sourdough sometimes got stuck and fell apart when I tried to get a few slices out. To fix that I had pieces of baking paper that I put between the slices before freezing the loaf. Bit of a pain, but better than crumbled bread or thowing half of it out. :)

Fight it with every fibre of your being eccheyne. DSO owes us 3K and don't even return emails or phone calls now that we're no longer in the country. If we owed anyone 3K and tried to enter the country again we'd go to jail. Wonder if that can be arranged for the big-wigs that owe us?

make sure they can get out (it will be over in a day) or spray the little blighters and keep your little one away from the area for a day. :) This isn't right. It means you have a large, established colony in/under your home. They only take wing when they are too big for the specific area, and are attempting to find new grounds to inhabit. (They are females and potential queens) The large colony will remain there. It is bees, that when they swarm, the entire colony is leaving. Lol...I was reigning in the biologist in me and keeping it simple. :) In my experience, the winged ants appear once and never again in the same spot. That's all a worried Mum needs to know.

My son is almost six and still gets night terrors...but only very occasionally. As it's not affecting my son at all (he too has absolutely no recollection) we haven't worried about it. His started at about 18 months old and were frequent. The frequency has dropped off over the years. Triggers for my son are fever, going to bed overtired and getting too hot while in bed. He needs a very fixed dinner, bath, story, bed routine at almost the exact same time every night. If anything sways us from this he'll almost always have disturbed sleep or a night terror. When he was young and having them a couple of times a week, it was suggested that if he didn't grow out of it, to see a paed to rule out sleep 'disorders'. (HORRID term when referring to a child! :( ) Some kids do have sleep apnoea (sp?) or even undiagnosed epilepsy which may contribute to terrors. Sometimes advice from a Dr is needed in older kids when they are tired all the time from the disturbed sleep. Why not see a good paed to put your mind to rest and get some tips on how you might improve his sleep? ETA - When you sit with him during the night terror, do you try to wake him? My son settles much faster if I make a big effort to wake him as quickly as possible. If I let the night terror take its course, he can remain inconsolable and not sleep well for the rest of the night. edited by Green-ish on 20/06/2011

I have to agree that it is tasty but YES it doesn't compare to lamb;) Lol...it is OK!! Even heard in the news due to supply and demand on produce prices will only continue to rise for the next 10 years. The government has frozen prices of 400 items in 70 outlets..... :) http://www.thenational.ae/business/retail/small-shops-lose-out-in-uae-price-freeze what would really be great for our economy and pockets, would be if we could really start growing more/producing more in UAE rather than importing. Interestingly (and with apologies for yet another Aus comparison ;) ), we pay a FORTUNE for fresh fruit and veg here and they are almost all grown locally. Today, cucumbers (same as the small local ones in Dubai) that were grown less than 2hrs drive from the supermarket were equiv of 32dhs/kg!! Local bananas, well over 40dhs/kg. Avocados grown 15 mins away, 8dhs each. Imported Californian navel oranges were cheaper than local madarins. Go figure! Local doesn't always mean cheaper...OH how I wish it did everywhere.

...What helped me to stabilize our grocery spendings was to make a mealplan every week and stick to it, that way I can coordinate my shopping and the less I have to to the supermarket to get missing ingredients, the less I end up spending overall. (impuls purchases) ... Exactly what I've always done. It saves a fortune if you can be disciplined, get a shopping list organised and stick to it. Before you start getting this organised, it's also great to go through your cupboard and freezer now and plan meals that will use all of those packets and tins that have been lurking at the back collecting dust and frost for months. :)

If you are using lots of fruit and veg, why not get a couple of friends together and go to the F&V market once a week? MUCH cheaper than any of the stores and fresher as it hasn't sat around in storage and transport on the way to the supermarkets. Because it's all fresh, it lasts longer than the 'Spinneys' fare which rots in a few days. Save more by buying certain produce by the box and cook or freeze it in bulk as appropriate so it keeps longer. I (sadly) only went to the F&V market once...but I'd suggest going with someone who knows the ropes. It can be really overwhelming on your own the first time.

Soooo jealous of all of you going home to Europe and the US! Four seasons, rational costs for things, and civilization!!! As I say every year, maybe next year my number will come up! We have concluded that the rational cost of things isn't all it's cracked up to be here in the US. Food is more expensive and gas is a killer. Certainly won't be buying an SUV unless it's a Hybrid. Rent is cheap though for a nice big house with no neighbors attached to me either side. My electric bill is reasonable and no where near the cost of Dewa. Similar in Australia...some things cheaper than Dubai, some much more expensive. Cost of living changed a lot here in the time we were away. Given that my husband's Dubai employer paid for rent, schooling and health care, we were relatively MUCH better off there (financially). edited by Green-ish on 18/06/2011

He's probably talking about the cert having to be attested in your country by the UAE embassy and your Ministry of Foreign Affairs...standard procedure for any official paperwork that will be needed in the UAE. Why not call a comapny in your local area that specialises in moving animals internationally. They will do this sort of thing all the time and be able to explain it all to you. Given your tight timelines, it may just be easier to pay them to do all of the paperwork and maybe orgnaise boarding for the cats if they are not ready to travel when you do.
