Lots of options. Thanks for those. We had considered Greece but wasn't too sure about getting around with the luggage and kids on my own as it'd mean a ferry or flight after that. Thailand is always a realiable option. Been there a few times but always happy to go back. Greenish - what's the best way to get to Croatia from DXB? Also, anyone been to Goa in the summer. Thought it was monsoon season and best avoided? Thanks We went to Goa a couple of years back at the end of July.... Had a great time. Was monsoon season and the beach was closed but only had 20 mins of rain on 4 days out of the 10 so it wasn't a problem...Infact it was fab after being here!!... Yep, we were the crazy Brits standing in it with our arms outstretched! *LIKE* :D Sometimes the best holidays are had if yoou head there when everyone else is avoiding the place. ;)

Cheeky Monkey I have had post natal depression. I was treated and it passed. There is a reason. It is passable Oh how I wish it was that 'easy' for all who live with depression. I daily look forward to the day when it passes... Two thumbs up aroha! Sometimes all people need is someone else who 'gets it' to have a cuppa with. xx edited by Green-ish on 17/03/2011

Oh shaf...not nice for you. Take heart, it's not always that bad. All three of my children had CP at the same time last year at 5, 3 and a few months old. A few sleepless nights with the fevers and then it was all over. If your wee one does get in, work closely with a trusted Dr to keep an eye on the possible fevers, hydration levels etc. Take meals' advice on keeping things clean. I hope it misses your little one and that it's a mild case for anyone affected. xx

Oops...sorry jasmine. I actually haven't been to any of those countries. I just always suggest Italy or Turkey, both of which would be hot and expensive (very!) in August. Goa, Croatia and Germany were on the list of places we never got a chance to visit. My in-laws went to Croatia and said it was amazing! A school-Mum friend told me all about renting a house by a lake in Germany and spending the days walking in the woods with the children...bliss. I'm sure lots of the ladies here can help you if one of those appeals.

lol HAK, that's about the same as Aus prices isn't it? 11GBP is about 65AED? 15GBP approx 90dhs? ;) Anyway, that vile 'chicken' in the supermarkets is just inedible. I used to enjoy my occasional Organics splurge. :D

....50AED for 2 organic chicken breasts. ... Depending on their size, that's not 'expensive'. It's just that the rubbish chicken available in the supermarkets is disturbingly cheap in Dubai. I always wondered just how anyone up the chain from the supermarkets actually got paid for the chicken when it's so cheap on the shelf... With apologies for the Australian comparison, we're paying 50dhs or more per kilo for supermarket chicken here. Organic chicken is over 100dhs per kilo.

JS...I was in indescribable agony about three weeks after Charlotte was born. Turns out I had a herniated disc. Might be a good idea to see a Dr and have X-rays or scans done to be absolutely sure of what's going on. I would not want anyone to be in the pain I was in because I didn't do something about it sooner. Hope you're more comfortable soon.

KB, I bought a second-hand one, scrubbed all 'contact' parts to within an inch of their lives, ran it all through the steriliser and it was brilliant for the almost 12 months I used it. It's still in perfect working order apart from one of the seals which are available as spare parts. There's a big market out there for them. I missed a few before snapping mine up. :)

Fantastic that you're planning ahead! Vacc's, rabies titre tests and pet passports up to date? All animals' paperwork together and ready to go? Money set aside for costs? Have you talked to a pet relocation agent and got everything straight in your mind so you know exactly what to do and how long it will all take? Somewhere for them all to go at the other end of the journey?

The chicken breasts here are definately different, they seem to cook a lot faster and have a fluffy like texture. Now I know this is due to water and fillers being pumped into it. What about hormones? I know strict rules about adding these in other countries but not sure about here. It does bother me that I am putting toxic garbage into my mouth however at the same time I cannot bring myself to pay 100 dhs for a chicken at organic, no matter how good. Dont have enough time to shop at 5 different supermarkets like others do! Maybe do what I did and just stop buying chicken. It's garbage, it's full of garbage and it's probably not even a little bit good for you. Go for an organic chicken once a month and you'll really enjoy it. ;) Buy at Organics on sale days and it's not so expensive.

I...I think all the stuff on the 'black trays in Spinney's has been frozen and defrosted, but it isn't that obvious from the packaging.. even though it is called fresh. ... If it's defrosted, it does always say "Do not re-freeze" (or similar), usually in tiny lettering somewhere on the back.

All of that pre-packed 'fresh' chicken at Spinneys (spinneys labels, black trays, vacuum packed) is pumped with water and fillers to plump it up and make it 'tender'. Just look at the ingredients list! Frightening. If you really want to eat chicken, spend the extra every now and then on chicken from Organics. At least you know what you're getting.

It's just so hard for me to get out of the house and do the running, usually with at least two children (3yr old on bike, 1 yr old in buggy). SUCH a shame to run on the treadmill though where I'm living! For those who've done both road and treadmill, do you work as hard on the treadmill?

Why should she necessarily be "bored and unchallenged in FS1"? Teachers cater for children at all different levels in every classroom every day. If your preferred school has offered her a place in FS1, talk to them about how they plan to cater for her as an individual...how their teachers ensure every child is challenged and allowed to thrive. If you're not happy with the answers, then you go with the other school. OR...consider her social development. Which age group do you think she'll relate best to? A group where she's always the youngest? Or one where she's always the oldest? Will she potentially struggle in FS2 because she has none of the FS1 foundations? You know her best so only you can decide. :) My son did FS1 even though he missed the FS2 cutoff by 20 days and he loved every minute of that year. He's doing the equivalent of FS2 now and still loving school. edited by Green-ish on 14/03/2011

As an individual and a mother how can you say never say never when speaking about yourself? How can you even consider it may be a future option? If I'm reading you correctly, I think I agree with you entirely. I can say NEVER because I just cannot foresee anything bad enough that would make me leave my children. I cannot, will not, even entertain any train of thought that ends with me having to leave them. In saying that, I can also honestly say that I don't judge any woman who feels backed into a corner and 'has to' leave for her or her children's safety. My father was an amazing Dad and to this day, many years after his death, I miss him. But, he was a sh*t of a husband. It's taken me over 20 years to understand what he did to my mother and her self-esteem and that he successfully and selfishly made her believe that she had no choice...to leave him and his bullying ways, she had to leave my sister and me. I'm glad she left because she was so miserable in their marriage that I hated her for taking it out on me. Of course, at the time I just thought she was a b*tch who hated me. We now have a steadily growing, healthy relationship. I'm no longer so black and white on mothers and children. For some, leaving is the only option. I can say right now that I will never leave mine.

Lol Em...my advice was to go for a bigger tank. ;) I'm not familiar with those fish (a variety of catfish I think??) so can't help anymore than to suggest you might find lots of really useful, easy to follow websites on their care. Did you put water conditioner in when you set up the tank and let it all sit for a while before releasing the fish? Put the sealed bag of fish in the tank and let the water temps equalise before releasing them? Do you have a filter and pump or some fresh plants for oxygen? Is the tank in a spot that gets hit with AC blasts...or hot, direct sun? (fish hate sudden temp changes and some hate cold water altogether). Depending on the volume of water and the size of the fish, the tank may also need daily, partial water changes. Fingers crossed for healthier fishies. :D edited by Green-ish on 13/03/2011

I think 1 week is far too short. I had 2 weeks to cover Rome(7d), FLorence(4d) and Venice(4d) 3 years ago and I found that I did not have the time to cover so many things.... LOL...we've now spent a combined total of 5 weeks in Tuscany and feel that we only just scratched the surface of what there is to see, do and eat (!!) in Italy. splash...given you only have a week, I really think you should stay in Rome and do day trips out once or twice. Rome is AMAZING and I think you'd need a month to see it all. :) edited by Green-ish on 13/03/2011

When is her visa renewal due? Why not just say no to this loan request? Don't give her a reason - it's none of her business really. If she's not had a holiday for a while and you can do without her, let her go...on her own steam because you've already paid all owed travel/holiday allowances. She'll either go because she really does need to be there, or she'll stay because it was all a ruse. She needs to know her family is absolutely not your responsibility and that she's actually on a very good wicket. If you're generally 'happy' with her work, keep her on for the rest of the current visa period rather than wasting money spent there. If things take a turn for the worse after you tell her there will be no loan, then you make a decision about terminating her employment. If she learns to pull her head in and just get on with the job then you don't have to go through the hassle of trying to find someone else. Yes, you've created a bit of a rod for your own back, but why add the stress of this (seemingly currently popular) "BBB" business if there's a chance she'll remain a basically good employee? Good luck!

Congratulations bt! Exciting times. :D Both pregnancies I had in Dubai I went to my GP (Carol Smylie at Dubai London Clinic, DFC) until 28-ish weeks, then I switched to a hospital package. Carol organised all relevant bloodwork and scans etc until I went under the care of the hospital. If your pregnancy is high risk, it's a good idea to check out Al Wasl and consider paying for a pakcage there. Awesome 'high risk' care at AW. Best to go there and ask (insist!) to see the head of ante-natal care to work out the best way for you to go forward.

It just infuriates me that ambassadors of a foreign airline -- which, really, is what the Cathay cabin crew are when they are in transit -- are subjected to this sort of behaviour; that some men think that they are easy game just because they are in a hotel without husbands or chaperones. I'm glad they spoke out though. And I do hope they are re-routed to a safer country. :( *Like* (with apologies to those who loathe *like* ;) ) You're so right WM...poor girls. Oh my gosh, I'm Green-ish with envy! :D I can't help much from personal experience. Although we've spent two glorious holidays in Tuscany, we had very young children with us and didn't travel far from our home base near Arezzo. My in-laws however, did a fairly extensive tour (with a group) and they said they would have happily missed everything else to spend more time in Rome and Venice, especially Venice. I hope that's a teeny bit helpful. I hope you will adore Italy as much as we do. ETA - oops, I just read Swiss Sandy's post. Pompei was the other place my in-laws said is an absolute must see! Wrong direction for what you're considering so far, but worth throwing into the pot as an option. edited by Green-ish on 12/03/2011

I don't shield my children from everything that's going on 'out there', but I don't think they are old enough to sit down and watch the news yet. Let's face it, there's almost NEVER good news on a news program so very young children will not get a balanced view of the big wide world in that half hour. I sat my oldest (5yrs) down with me to watch a little of the flood coverage in Aus in January. [u'>Everyone[/u'> was talking about it so I felt he needed to see some of it to understand. I also wanted him to understand why it was important to me that I go and join the "mud army" to help the clean up. simpleasabc...while I agree in theory that children need to learn about death, Lionel Shiver can also only comment 'in theory'. She's not a Mum after all. As with all things, I think we need to decide what to show the children and when to show them as is appropriate to that child. If my daughter watched the news, she wouldn't be affected at all my most of it. That's just how she is. My far more sensitive son would have nightmares and want to talk about it over and over for weeks and be really quite distressed.

As mentioned below, she's probably going through one of her annual sheds. People often don't realise just how much hair a short-haired dog can drop. Believe me, I understand how little time you might have, but finding five minutes a day to groom the dog through this period will make a massive difference.
