Congratulations CheekyG!!! Welcome little Harrison. :D Glad I could give you a giggle. It was a pretty full-on day. :D Those poor moving men! With my first child I had been in hospital for a week before my EDD due to high BP. On my EDD I finally went into labour, called my husband to come in and we waited, waited, waited - WHERE was the movie-style emergency???. My husband eventually had to use the bathroom but there's no way I was letting him go out of the room to the public loos, depsite hospital policy banning anyone but patients from the private ensuites. DH got himself all comfy in the ensuite when literally 30 seconds later my waters broke. I yelled for him to GET OUT! GET OUT! because all I wanted was the toilet. Heavy merconium staining in the liquor so I got my movie-style rush to the delivery room. Come to think of it, it was a good 12 hours before DH got back to the loo.....

We spent three nights there last July and loved it. Our three children are very young and it was perfect as a low key, stress free get away. The facilities are a little dated but that adds to the relaxed feel. The rooms are gorgeous though!! Recently refurbed and very, very nice indeed. Food was ordinary but filling....oh, except for the Indian/Asian dishes. Indian head chef while we were there did REALLY good food from his homeland. :)

Make sure it's spotless before you put it away. Also, I have used ENJO cloths for years and the green kitchen glove gets silver clean in no time (with no chemicals :) ).

...Arohadxb: Alas, they are expecting to even lose mobile coverage as towers will be knocked out and networks overloaded, but yes, good idea to keep it charged. I did hear someone say that sometimes when calls don't work, sms does. Don't know if that's true though. ... I think it's worth mentioning though that, like the floods a few weeks ago, the next few days will be an utter debacle for emergency services and it's best to stay off the phones. No calls in or out, no texts etc unless calling for emergency help. I think that as hard as it will be, for the first two or three days we're just going to have to try to assume "no news is good news". The telecommunications system just will not cope with the load put on it.

Spoke to my Mum and Dad further down the QLD coast this morning and they said it was s unny clear day, no wind but stinking hot. They have the TV on continuously watching updates but were finding it hard to belive that this is going on only several hours drive above them. STINKING hot here on the Sunshine Coast ( a good 1500km south of the eye), very still and unbearably humid. It's not *as hot* as a summer day in Dubai but I swear it an awful lot more uncomfortable. It's very weird outside...not normal for this time of year and eerie. Even here, this far south there's a stillness and quiet I just feel uncomfortable with. I'm glued to the TV watching all of the webcams people have left running in their homes. The weather people are gutted because this IS going to happen and they can't give people any hope that it may not hit. Strength and prayers to all in FNQ. It's going to be a very, very long night. Lots of love to those of you in Dubai worrying about friends and family. xxx

Dr Nora at Dubai London clinic is very good with kids, she's welsh and knows what she is doing. I found Nicholas & Asp to expensive TBH I found them to be pretty reasonably priced for treatments my husband and I received. For my daughter, they were brilliant. First visit Dr Izabella didn't charge a dirham because she did a very 'temp' fix on the smashed tooth to reduce stress on my anxious daughter. She said it may not hold so no charge. About six months later we had the 'temp' fix replaced with a more permanent one for which we paid maybe 250dhs including consult. After that, three monthly checks to keep an eye on the repair and the other damaged tooth were free. I sent one in for a clean and before i know it had had 1300 dhs worth of completely unrequired X rays and unapproved by the parent! So no not overly amused at all, Dr Nora did a fab job on a tooth of mine that the other practice just wanted to rip out and put an implant in. So sorry Dr Nora all the way for me and thanks to SM for the recommendation. Fair enough. Inexcusable!

I go to the Creek a lot and have never felt unsafe. Yes,you get stared at but thats Dubai. It is safe there. Some people really exaggerate here! I only ever went to the Creek/souks at night. Often only with one other female friend. Should I feel insulted that I never once felt uncomfortable or unsafe? I honestly didn't feel any more 'stared at' than on a school afternoon with the three children in MCC!

I also think the the lack of anger comes from Australians knowing, and being proud of, how hard it is to get into the country as an immigrant whereas it can be easier elsewhere because their processes and checks are not as vigilant. So true CT! I'm just feeling a wee bit of indignation on behalf of those who've done it for the right reasons. :)

I'm noticing a singular lack on this thread of the vitriol recently expressed on other threads about immigrants trying to obtain British passports for the 'perks'. I restrained myself earlier...why would one want citizenship in a country they don't want to live in? I don't understand how 'having to' spend a certain amount of time in Aus can be seen as a hardship if you want to be a citizen. Thank you. Yeah, get the passport, education, health, stability that goes with it, but figure out the best way how not to give back as much as possible. Either be a citizen with all that entails - ie LIVING there or don't be. Exactly. The suggestion that someone would apply for a passport 'only' for the perks is a huge insult to all of the immigrants before who have worked their butts off to become citizens then continue working and contributing for life. True for any country.

Oh DC, it's absolutely normal to feel sad when you have to give up breastfeeding before you're really 'ready'. My first went on a feeding strike at almost 9 months and I just couldn't get him to breastfeed again after that. Emotions are high while your hormones are all over the place and I seriously felt like I was mourning a real loss. Cuddle him, do something nice for yourself and allow yourself to process the emotions you're justifiably feeling. Much love to you! xx

I was moving house. :D At a checkup three days earlier the nurse found I was in early labour and admitted me because of my blood pressure etc. I was rather excited...mostly because I would have done ANYTHING to avoid doing the house move, letting my husband handle it all. ;) Little Miss settled through that day though and the lovely head of nursing sent me home with strict instructions to return if the labour intensified. Three days later on my EDD it was moving day - strongish contractions by afternoon, drove (3 mins) to school (between contractions LOL) to collect son from school, other parents looked at me with horror :D, finished moving day having contractions on my gym ball and one particular chair. AMAZING movers kept asking if they needed to take me to hospital! When they finished packing the truck they put my gym ball and chair on last, raced to the new house and put the chair and gym ball out for me before I got there. :) Moving van unloaded, beds built and made up, kids to bed, had a shower...waters broke, called someone in to sit with older kids, husband RACED me to Al Wasl and Litte Miss was born 20 minutes later. :D ETA - oops...CheekyG - Do whatever feels right for you. If you want to go and look around the shops, do it. If you want to put your feet up and watch movies, do it. If you want to sleep all day, DO IT. My point being, this little person is about to arrive and dictate what you do 24 hours a day for the next 15 years or so. LOL Enjoy these last few moments. ;) edited by Green-ish on 28/01/2011

Everything in those shops looks awful IN the shop...but it's all cheap and now that we have these items in Australia and dotted in amongst our other things, they draw lovely comments from visitors. :) Every time I look at my coffee pot, I'm reminded of the coffee pot roundabouts :D and coffee & dates with car salesmen in Al Awir.

ETA - you can always message the seller first and sort something out re delivery here. I have found communication with Etsy sellers to be excellent without exception. :) edited by Green-ish on 26/01/2011 I agree - they've always been really flexible and accommodating to me. Interesting thread - I was wondering about Ebay and Etsy and deliveries as I'd heard people get their mail delivered to their offices since street numbers are so vague. Yep...all mail delivered to PO boxes unless you pay for a courier service. Lots have the mail addressed to the company address but it's also easy and fairly cheap to get your own PO box. Depends on where you live and where the nearest/most convenient PO boxes are. :)

Green-ish replied : Greenish wrote: I don't know if it's a language issue with you or if you really are as judgemental as you appear in so many of your posts. All I have tried to say to you time and again is that generalisations and open-ended judgements are unfair, unhelpful and have no place amongst a supportive group of women/mothers. Green-ish ...supporting each other does not mean endorsing inaccurate comments and facts ... I'm not sure what you mean, Salome. This is not about this post but in general . I am a working mum ( employing a full time maid at home and I enjoy it every day ...) with more than 20 years in the healthcare system all over the world . When LD said that the NICU in Al Wasl is free, I told her that this is wrong ...when another OP said OMG this DR is amazing , I told her that this is wrong as I knew that because of this DR a patient died ... I cant agree with innacurate comments so I am not supportive in this forum?!? please explain to me Greenish what I should answer to all these OP . Thanks . edited by salome on 26/01/2011 So basically, your comment that I questioned above was not even referring to this thread, which is why I didn't understand what you wrote. I have no problem with posters disagreeing with each other or adding pertinent information to a discussion. I do however think that there's a way to put the information or opinion across that does not suggest you have no respect for the opinion of others. For example...and I apologise in advance to all I'm about to offend. ;) I loathe Bumbo's, Jolly Jumpers and baby walkers etc etc. I think they are dangerous and potentially detrimental to the normal development of a baby's muscular and skeletal systems because they 'force' babies to do things or sit/stand in positions that they are not developmentally ready for. I believe babies will sit, stand, walk and jump when their bodies are ready for these milestones. Except on expert advice from medical professionals, I think the bl**dy things should be banned. BUT, that's my opinion and I do not have the right to force that on anyone else. Every parent has the right to do the research and to use those items if they believe they are safe and relevant to their child and their situation. Unless medically advised, I will never think it's a good idea to use those items, but I do respect the right of parents to choose to use them. I have commented on them in past threads but I don't bother anymore unless the OP is specifically [u'>asking for opinions[/u'> on their use. If someone simply posts "does anyone have a Bumbo for sale", I keep my tirade of 'opinionatedness' to myself. I'd have to have the time, energy and inclination to go back through your history to find plenty of examples where you come in and post the sort of judgemental tosh you have at the start of this thread. We both know you've done it plenty of times and that we've 'discussed' it before. Adding to an existing conversation in a respectful manner is one thing. Posting irrelevant, unsubstantiated, judgemental generalisations or scaremongering with out-dated or inaccurate medical information simply has no place on a forum like this.

Thank you ladies. I saw something I would like to buy but was unsure how easy it would be for delivery to Dubai. All I can suggest is to learn from my one 'bad' experience and pay extra for either courier or registered mail. The items that never made it to me were custom made from fabric no longer in production and the end of the sellers supply. While the seller and I did work something out, I have often wondered where those thoroughly gorgeous Size 2 pants and top ended up... :( ETA - you can always message the seller first and sort something out re delivery here. Queensland weather has turned it on for us today! Not a cloud in the Sunshine Coast sky, kookaburras going mad in the trees outside and even a goanna sunning itself on the gravel drive this morning. What a glorious day to be an Aussie. :D Have you been listening to the radio today? I was in the bakery this morning and it was one of the AM stations, I'm sure, and they are calling it 'invasion day' and saying there's nothing happy about it. They went on for about 15 minutes on this too! Haven't heard it today but there's been a bit of a PC brigade push to change Australia Day and it's message for a number of years now. I'm still learning about it all and trying to decide where I sit on the issue so I can't really say if it bothers me, if I think it's a load of PC nonsense or if it's something we genuinely should be acknowledging on or separately to "Australia Day". Not as coherent as I'd like this post to be but baby awake and calling.....

Oh my gosh, I'm a tad teary and overwhelmed!! Thank you tahm, halfmoon, DC, Mrs L and my lovely friend Jane (and other amazing, supportive EW women!!!). Salome...to be clear, I acknowledged that your post was not written in your own words therefore I'm not accusing you personally of writing sanctimonious drivel. I do however maintain that judgemental posts like that one have no place on a forum like this. You and I often clash here because I believe to the core of my being that this forum should be about sharing information and SUPPORTING each other. That doesn't mean we always have to agree with each other. I firmly believe that sometimes we have to 'challenge' each other to make each other really think and to help each other to make the very best decisions for our own circumstances. (awfully constructed sentence there!!) I firmly believe in respecting the choices of others as parents. We cannot walk in their shoes. We do not know the specifics of their circumstances etc etc. A long, long time ago I started a thread on the main forum asking if it's possible to respect other people's choices even when we cannot agree with that choice. I think we can always respect the decisions of others when those decisions are made on all of the best information available to them at the time, and with the decision being made with good intent. I don't know if it's a language issue with you or if you really are as judgemental as you appear in so many of your posts. All I have tried to say to you time and again is that generalisations and open-ended judgements are unfair, unhelpful and have no place amongst a supportive group of women/mothers.

I really wished we'd bought an Arabic style lamp/lantern before we left...just a gorgeous little something that could light up a corner somewhere as a reminder of our time in that part of the world. The lovely Embo brought something very special home for me a few weeks ago. I was so disappointed that I just couldn't afford the Arabic name necklaces for my girls...gold is SO expensive at the moment! However, Embo found someone who has done them in silver and they are GORGEOUS! I'm particularly loving the 'surfer dude' style one on a leather thong that she had made for my son. :)

Maybe trying approaching the owner first. Even borderline threatening to complain. But please don't complain to DM. All they will do is get rid of the dog or put it to sleep. It's not the fault of the animal. It's the fault of the human here. Clearly, the poor dog needs some training and socialisation. And the owner needs to be trained even more so, and not let her dog roam off-leash. I'd suggest taking whatever steps are necessary, except for reporting it to the authorities. Again, it's not the fault of the poor dog. It's the owner to blame. Why should that dog loose its life because of a careless owner? Not quite true, I know of several cases where DM visited the dogs' owners and gave a warning, Sometimes people need to be reminded of their responsibilities, by someone with a little more clout than a concerned neighbour. And most certainly speak to Emaar security. I agree completely. Someone has to do something before a child is hurt. Call DM in the morning.

AnonDubai, I hear you I hear you! Will not go into details. I love DD with all my heart, but half an hour every day ONLY to myself is my life saver. And yes - I do have a [b'>nanny[/b'> here. xoxo I think your need for that time to yourself is healthy and normal for all mums. I think it's potentially dangerous to give yourself over 100% to your children. Motherhood has to be THE most draining and demanding job there is...with it's rewards, although there are days for all of us (I'm sure) that the rewards are hard to see. Anon...you are not alone.
