AnonDubai, I hear you I hear you! Will not go into details. I love DD with all my heart, but half an hour every day ONLY to myself is my life saver. And yes - I do have a [b'>nanny[/b'> here. xoxo I think your need for that time to yourself is healthy and normal for all mums. I think it's potentially dangerous to give yourself over 100% to your children. Motherhood has to be THE most draining and demanding job there is...with it's rewards, although there are days for all of us (I'm sure) that the rewards are hard to see. Anon...you are not alone.

I wish I had a nanny that I could leave my kids with every day all day. I don't like motherhood. WOW - you surely get the medal for honesty!!! Take a read through the "IVF" threads and you will see how blessed you are! :\: I know. To be honest, I read those types of threads and can't understand why anyone would want a baby. Every time I see a pregnant woman, I think: Thank God it's not me! I am positive, though, that things will get better one day. I just have to admit that I don't find motherhood easy and often think I am not cut out for the job. Your girls are beautiful and you are wonderful with them. I wish I was there to give you a hug and tell you it will be ok. PLEASE talk to a close friend or trusted GP... it may be that you need another sounding board to get yourself feeling better. (well, a good chat and some sleep at the very, very least!) huge hugs to you! xxx edited by Green-ish on 24/01/2011

...For the non-working mums, who spend their time gossiping and ordering their ‘nanny’ to do this and that, showing off to friends and relatives that you are the boss. Oh! Please do yourselves and your kids a favour - look after your kids to teach them how to behave... Don’t impose all your responsibility as a parent on your ‘nanny’. For reference, look at the dictionary for the definition of a nanny or a maid. Mother Teresa Dubai While I was in Dubai I loved the freedom that having a maid gave me. I loved being able to spend ALL of my time with my children, very rarely distracted by housework. Every single day that I had a maid, I was grateful. Now that I'm back in Australia and doing everything on my own, I miss my kids. Yes, we're all in the same house all day every day but I'm lucky to find 30 mins every day to spend focused on them and almost never get decent one-on-one time with each one of them. I have always hated that people in Dubai use the terms "maid" and "nanny" interchangeably. At the very least, it's disrespectful to nannies. But for some sanctimonious twit to suggest all "non-working mums" who have domestic help are doing less for their kids...insulting and narrow minded. I know for sure from personal experience that my parenting was both more enjoyable and more effective with a helper around the house. (and no, my kids are not dysfunctional, spoilt brats and yes, my 5, 3 and 1 yr old children all know how to clean up their own messes...or at least how to help to get it done!) My point being, those who are actually 'letting the maid/nanny raise the kids' won't read or pay attention to your post Salome. Those who have or had a maid and still parent their own children are likely to find the suggested generalisation both offensive and inaccurate. I realise the post is not in your words, but I fail to see the point of posting it here in a forum set up to help support other mums.

With apologies for not reading very much of these threads at all...have many of you started the program really overweight (15kg+) and really unfit, seen it through and survived?? I have the DVD on it's way and REALLY want to do something about my fitness, however I do need to be able to move enough to do school runs and pick up the baby. ;)

Can I ask!!! why do maids sit in coffee shops with their employer and never have a drink in front of them, its the same in restaurants, I just couldnt sit and see my maid ( if I had one )have nothing, really does puzzle me. Can anyone tell me why. edited by salsB on 24/01/2011 I once invited our maid to join us at a coffee shop as I genuinely thought she'd like to do something outside of the house with me and the children and she knew the few other mums we were meeting. I was SO embarrased that she refused to eat or drink anything (I bought food despite her politely saying no), she sat at a separate table near the children then spent the whole time just fussing over them once they'd eaten. It became clear to me that that's where she thought her 'place' was and that I'd actually made her very uncomfortable 'expecting' her to chat with the adults. Yep...I was very new to Dubai at the time!

I'll check my email in the morning (11pm and past my bedtime here!) but I thought it might be worth mentioning that the EW mods have been very supportive of Nappycino's in the past. If you're going to take the reins txjuliet, it might be worth emailing the mods just to be sure it's ok to 'advertise' here. No-one else seems to put this info out there for parents, so it would be such a shame to lose the momentum we had going. :)

I have no idea about visa sponsorship etc for a nanny in Dubai, but perhaps your best bet would be to advertise in your home country and bring someone over? edited by Green-ish on 21/01/2011

Really big hug for you shazman. I remember well the thread about those cats and how thrilled 'Pets regulars' (lol) all were for the furry pensioners when you offered to take them on. It's not often someone is prepared to take on an older pet, let alone two, and give them a right royal retirement. I've seen those kitties chilling in your home and they know they've landed on their feet! Strength to you as you go through this my friend. xxx ETA - Oh SD, I'm so sorry about your dog too. xxx edited by Green-ish on 21/01/2011

We're not going to have any kids on our excursion, how is it for a grown up outing? It's brilliant for all ages. We took my in-laws there and both thought it was fantastic. It's one of those little things that should be on everyone's Must do list through the cooler months.

It is fab, my DD had her birthday there last year, it was great no screaming kids and horrid party music. Worth every penny. You get hands on with the birds and watch a fabulous close up show. A real little secret gem in Dubai. All the adults at my DDs party loved the show as well. Yes, yes we did! :D xx

Hi Ginabeana - Here is Emirates policy... print out the policy as well as the certificate, As is states "Please note that for your safety, [i'>if you choose not to carry a medical certificate[/i'>, Emirates reserves the right, under certain circumstances, to refuse boarding." It does NOT state that they may refuse boarding under any other circumstances regarding your pregnancy! :) ... ...however, they can. Any airline has the right to refuse boarding of any passenger if they deem the passenger to be unfit on the day. I only know of this one case personally but often when these threads come up lots of posters know someone who's been turned away. For what it's worth, my friend was not travelling with Emirates but I'd have to confirm with her which airline it was. I'm not repeating the story to upset anyone, just to warn that it can and does happen.

I had the Siemens guys to our place in DSO about 7 months ago. Booked the service via the Siemens.ae website. Maybe try calling +971 4 366 0000 and ask for their service team? From memory, it was four or five working days from when I called to when they had a chance to come to the house. Hope that's helpful.

I fly back to UK to give birth at 35 weeks with Emirates. You obviously need letter. I found it quite amusing that they don't ask for the letter at check in but once you have boarded the flight! This is the thing...it seems to depend on the crew on the day. Once I was travelling at about 28weeks and was asked for the letter 2 hours after we took off! One friend of mine had checked airline policy, had her letter in hand and was refused boarding at the gate (which the airlines have the right to do, even if you have a letter). I guess anyone trying to travel while pregnant has to be prepared for all eventualities.

Hello All ! Thank you for the support ! Wanted to let you know that TODAY it has been more than 24 hours since I smoked a cigi.........Feeling very light headed and opening all my drawers to see if i can find a lost cigi ! ! ! :( Good for you Christeen! A friend of mine recently stopped smoking after trying on and off for over 20 years. Someone below mentioned Alan Carr and my friend who had tried everything said his book got through to her like nothing else had!! Among many other things, he says to try and wrap your head around the fact that you're not *giving up* anything. What you're doing is taking back your life and your health. You can't miss something you haven't given up. ;) He also suggests keeping cigarettes in the house. Making a conscious choice to *take your life back* and be more healthy is MUCH easier to stick to than depriving yourself. If the cig's are there and you could have them any time you want to, it reinforces the CHOICE you have made...not the deprivation. You CAN do it...for yourself and then ultimately for your baby. xx

You'll probably need a letter from your Dr saying that you're ok to fly. Best to check with the airline on their policy...some are even hesitant to let you fly with a Dr letter past a certain date. If you're feeling well and *need* to go, I can't see a problem (assuming you're ok with healthcare, insurance etc should you need medical care while you're away).

Another vote for Dragonmart. I had quotes for our last villa ranging from about 12K-17K. I got almost the same curtains made up at Dragonmart for under 3K. To get everything done at the best price, you need to take your own accurate measurements and be VERY specific about what you want, ie type of lining, finish at the top (pleats, gathers etc), poles or tracks etc. All of the curtain makers are in one area at Dragonmart so it's pretty easy to check out the range of fabrics and get a few quotes sorted.

Hope he's not flying into Qld, NSW, Victoria or Tasmania! I spent three hours going to all of the stores listed below (and many more like camping shops, Clark Rubber etc etc) last Saturday. I was trying to go to Brisbane to help a friend clean her flooded house and gumboots are the only sensible footwear for the foul sludge we all had to traipse through. I ended up with a crappy pair of 'dress' wellies (lordy me, can't believe there is such a thing) with horses printed all over them...which I had to pay an extortionate amount of money for and elbow my way to as every woman in the store was grabbing at the few pairs left. There was not even a pair of kids boots left in BigW or Kmart. Whew. My point...the whole east coast is in a dire flood situation and gumboots are almost rarer than hen's teeth. edited by Green-ish on 19/01/2011

what medicines do you always keep at home for ur little children for fever, cold, etc?? Paracetamol, ibuprofen and saline. Depends on how young they are really. For the first two years (after 3 months) I use nothing other than paracetamol (Calpol/Panadol), ibuprofen (nurofen/brufen) and saline drops without talking to a Dr. If they are unwell more than three days or get a fever over 38.5C I head for the Dr and follow their advice. Current recommendations are that specific cough and cold medications should not be used in children under 2yrs unless supervised directly by a medical professional.

... Depression isn't a character trait, it's an illness. For those who have advised leaving him, on this issue, I'm going to hold you in the same contempt as my aunt, who's divorcing my uncle after his stroke because she doesn't want to pay for his medical expenses. True that it's an illness HK. True that it can be cured...IF the husband wants help. I agree leaving him without trying to help him would be unfair on both of them when they perhaps have some chance of a lifetime of happiness. However, not all of us are made of such strong stuff as your husband and SD's husband seem to be. Full credit to them...but please don't judge those of us on the other side of this horrid illness. Walk a mile in someone else's shoes and all that. x ETA - not wanting to pay medical expenses and not being able to cope are two different things so really not a fair comparison HK. edited by Green-ish on 16/01/2011

There's a fuel station with plenty of parking on Airport/Khawaneej Rd heading towards Khawaneej. You could come off Emirates Rd at the airport exit and head for Khawaneej. The service station is on the right as you head away from the airport after you pass the Mirdif exits. When you need to go to the airport, keep going along Khawaneej Rd, U-turn at the roundabout and you'll be back at the airport in ten mins. :)
