Wow just came back on to this thread and read all these comments. Just to add my experience, if you go back to my first post after OP posted, you will see that I was told by Cecile very clearly that while I may be shocked to hear this, she is going to tell me to cut down on my breastfeeding and to increase DD's solid intake. When I said that I was under the impression that for the first year, bm is supposed to be a baby's primary source of nutrition, she clearly stated that many books/publications misquote and thereby mislead mothers into believing this and that by now DD should be getting most of her nutrition from solids and NOT bm. When I said that DD's weight charts look good and she is thriving and healthy, she specifically said that while her weight gain may be good, we have to be sure she is getting the weight from the right sources (i.e. solids) at this point. That BM is high in sugar and yes she also stated that by giving her too much bm at this point I could be setting her up for obesity and diabetes later in life. Now just to clarify, I know that Cecile wanted me to cut out the night feeds immediately and would probably expect DD's daytime feeds to increase to compensate. But as I said before, i was not happy to do that as I felt it would decrease my supply and also DD is just not a good day time feeder as she is very distracted. I would also like to add that while I did not agree with Cecile's advice wrt breastfeeding, I believe her advice wrt sleep training was fair (IF that is the route parents want to go down of course) and as someone mentioned earlier, just because I may not agree with some of her advice also does not make her a bad person overall or even mean that all her advice is rubbish! She has clearly helped many people with sleep training and other issues and that cannot be dismissed! However, I do agree with some of the posters on here in that although I am not an experienced mother like some of you, I did not agree with her advice on bf and I hope that is not the advice being given to other new mothers here! Finally, going back to the original purpose of this thread, kcinthecity - I hope the sleep training is going well and you now have a well rested baby and mama!

Thanks DC - we have tried that - in fact, I mostly feed her lying down in my bedroom but she's a cheeky little monkey and does get distracted easily. I will have to keep working on it though as it would be nice if she could feed more during the day and less at night. Well we tried again tonight and unfortunately it took longer tonight and she cried a lot more :( BUT she did go to sleep in her crib in the end (instead of being rocked by us). One hour and 10 minutes tonight. Am REALLY hoping she follows in your DS's footsteps DC and tomorrow night is only 15 minutes... DH and I both felt terrible with her crying tonight but had to keep reminding ourselves that it is only a matter of a couple of days hopefully and then she'll be able to put herself to sleep which is so important for her...

DubaiCat and the rest of you who managed successfully to implement the sleep training, were your babies already not feeding at night when you started the training, or did you just find that the sleep training helped them to sleep longer, thereby naturally eliminating those extra feeds at night? At four months, DS was feeding right before he went to bed (around 8ish as we were in the UK and it was summer, so very light outside) and then having one feed in the night, anywhere from 1am to 4am, before waking up around 7ish. I have a feeling that if we'd been doing a dream-feed then, he may well have stopped waking in the night (after the dream-feed) of his own accord but that's just speculation now :D. This all went pear-shaped when we got back to Dubai at the beginning of September and our a/c was broken upstairs. We all had to sleep on a mattress down in the lounge and he ended up all over the place. We tried to be as quiet as we could but obviously we were disturbing him, as he started waking several times after he'd gone down. And here, perhaps, I made a rod for my own back. I began feeding him to get him to go back to sleep (what baby is going to say no to a nice, warm boob?!) and soon he was waking anywhere up to every 45 minutes. He'd only ever have the tiniest suckle, though, and drop back off to sleep - he never had a proper full feed at these wakings unless it was a time he'd normally have a feed, and then only one suckle of the many would be a proper feed. This was compounded when we went back to the UK a month or so later, and he was still waking God knows how many times throughout the night. I didn't want him to wake Mum up - she teaches, even though she should be retired :D - so again, I was feeding him to get him to go back to sleep. Again, just little nips for comfort. Once we saw Cecile, we initially got him back to a feed at bedtime, a dream-feed at 10.30/11ish, then one feed around 4ish, then within a couple of days he dropped the 4am feed and was down to just the dream-feed. At ten months he stopped that of his own accord. Thanks DC that makes me feel better. As DD is so distracted during the day, she really takes mini bm feeds through the day so I really was not keen to stop the night feeds outright. Last night she had her bed time feed at 6pm, then a feed at 10:30pm (which should have been a dream feed but she woke up before we could get to her!), and then she only woke up once at 3:30am for a feed before her morning feed at 6:30am so that really is not too bad - I really don't even mind feeding her at night if she just goes right back to sleep - but every now and then she wants to get up and 'chat' and play and that's difficult! KCinthecity - I decided to give it a go tonight (we were told to do 20-5-20 and to stay in the room and touch, shush and do anything but pick up during the 20 mins) - it took us an hour but she finally went to sleep!! She only cried for the last 5 mins so it wasn't too hard on me even though I was tempted to pick her up several times!! So let's hang in there and hopefully this will get better!!!

Am glad to see this thread as we too went to Cecile a while ago but have not yet started implementing what she said. I am happy to give the 45 minute don't pick up but soothe approach a go, but she also wanted me to completely stop breastfeeding at night. DD is just over 7 months old and while I do agree that she does not need to feed so often at night, I am worried about my supply going down if I just stop bf at night (she said no feeds after the 11pm dream feed until 6am). DubaiCat and the rest of you who managed successfully to implement the sleep training, were your babies already not feeding at night when you started the training, or did you just find that the sleep training helped them to sleep longer, thereby naturally eliminating those extra feeds at night? Problem is DD is such an active child that she is very distracted during day feeds so is naturally feeding more at night to compensate - I know that has to change, but am not keen to introduce the sleep training and stop feeding her 'cold turkey' all in one go. Would love to hear your experiences with this. KCinthecity - I hope tonight was a little easier and I hope your DD manages to sleep better soon!

Thanks for your responses. I did get a microwave sterilizing bag with the Medela small breastmilk storage bottles but have never used it! Are they re-usable or do I need to buy many of these (sorry have no idea and it does not come with instructions!). I probably will end up going with your advice though Kiwispiers and just bf the entire time as then I don't have to mess with sterilizers etc. I think we'll go with disposable diapers as I do not fancy hand washing for 10 days! I do have a hand mill so I can take that along and if the hotel can steam veg for me, I can puree it or even fork-mash it on the spot. Thanks ladies and Kiwispiers good luck with your trip - I have tried giving DD a bottle of organic purees here and there just to see if she'll take to them and luckily she does eat them, so at least I know I am okay in emergencies!

I've been rawfeeding my dogs for the past 13 years or so - they eat only raw meat, bones, organ meats - no veg, fruit, grains, kibble etc. The only supplement I give them now is some fish oil. Perfect teeth and perfect health etc - my 14 year old still has great teeth and great energy so I figure the diet works for him!

Does anyone know anyone who can still come home (to the Arabian Ranches) to do this? A friend of mine just had her baby a couple of days ago and would like someone to come give the baby a massage. Alternatively, does anyone do baby massage classes/courses here so you can learn to do it yourself?

Level 1 Day 6 done - I still hate the cardio set with jumping jacks and jump rope :( Either one combined with something else seem to be okay, but together, my shins start screaming!!! Hey Sunsa - yup I remember we were due around the same time! DD was born 12 Nov and is doing great! She has quite the personality and has us all smiling all the time (except sometimes at 5am when she wants to talk and play :\: ) I started shredding a couple of months ago, but only made it to about day 23 or 24 and then had visitors in town, then traveled and never got back in until a week ago. I was lucky and lost a lot of my weight in the first 3 weeks after delivery without even trying but then hadn't lost a single kilo in the past several months after that, despite starting pilates about 7 weeks after delivery. Am still bf and am eating like a hog so I do know what the problem is, and pilates was fantastic for getting some muscle tone back in my stomach etc but I felt like I needed something stronger to get the weight off. I LOVE the shred even though I dread doing it everyday - but it's only 20 minutes so you can grit your teeth and do it!!! All the best!

Thanks Meals. I had also written to Medela customer care at the same time, and strangely enough they wrote back to me saying that the bottles DO need to be sterilized before first use and that they are re-usable! Strange that they mention nothing of the sort on the box. They are tiny bottles anyway so will just be using them occasionally but thought I would post this on here anyway in case someone else buys the same box!

Sorry to hijack but we are also planning a trip to Samui this summer (around the last 2 weeks of July). Currently trying to finalize the accommodation. DD will only be 8 months old so it needs to be a child-friendly resort, but since my dad will be coming with us and is not one to lay out on the beach all day, the resort needs to be close enough to 'town' so he can also keep himself occupied. I have been to Samui but it was 11 years ago and we stayed on Chaweng beach. Is it still worth going to Chaweng or is Bophut the preferred area now? Is there enough to do around Bophut - i.e. restaurants, bars and shopping or will we end up going into Chaweng everyday for that? On the same note, has anyone stayed at the Anantara Lawana in Samui? It looks great but am not sure about the area. Snugs - thanks for all the info - I'm also keen to know if you rent your car before you reach there or do you do it locally? I also love the idea of the private villas - I looked on the website recommended but did not see Ban Kinaree or Devatara but maybe they're just not available for my dates. Would you still recommend a villa with an 8 month old? Thanx again for all the info :)

Not sure if they use the same standards across countries, but when we were flying back with DD from the States, we were told that the car seats were for babies from 1 year onwards. As DD was only 3 weeks old, we ended up carrying our own car seats to use in the US and also for the chauffeur service here in Dubai (when we called they said they do not provide car seats here). It was a pain to have to carry that one extra thing but IMO worth it as it was to do with DD's safety. I would guess that if they're ok to use until 3 yrs of age, they would be the 'second level' car seats - i.e. for use from 1yr onwards.

I would hate to go there and end up in one of the run down older rooms :( Am now also looking at the Laguna group of hotels. At the same time, a few friends are telling us we should not go to Thailand in July as it will be too hot for the little one and we'll end up spending most of our time indoors! Floppy123 - I would LOVE to go to the Maldives but maybe when DD is a LITTLE older.

You get breast milk bags - which are normally labeled for quantity and have a place to write the date and quantity etc. I've seen the madela ones at Mothercare and Babyshop if I can remember correctly. Bags take up less space in the freezer so are quite handy for storing lots of milk!

Sorry LJB2010 one more question - Hilton seems to be offering all sorts of different packages - without breakfast, including breakfast, including breakfast and dinner etc. I was thinking of taking the package including breakfast and dinner - in your opinion is that worth it or should we just get the breakfast option (it's about $20 more per day including dinner - am just wondering if we would be better off just purchasing dinner there separately or is $20 a good deal?)

Hi Midwifemom - there is a YogaOm in the Community market place which does fantastic Pilates, Yoga, Zumba and a variety of other classes. I have been doing the pilates there for a while now and it is still a challenging class! There is also a new gym that has opened up across the road from Choithrams - I forget the name - but they have a fully equipped gym as well as classes on offer there. I have not tried the classes yet but I looked at the schedule and there were several different classes available. HTH :)

Some great advice on here Sunsa. Also wanted to share my experience with you. DD was a great sleeper right up until she hit about 4 months at which point suddenly she started waking up every couple hours at night. I put this down to the 4 month sleep regression, but then when it went on for several weeks, the lack of sleep really started to get to us! I then realized that DD had sort of switched her days and nights, i.e. because she was so distracted during the day she was not feeding properly (as she preferred to play and look up around her instead of concentrate on her feeding!) she was getting more of her calories at night by feeding every few hours. Also, at her bed time feed (around 7pm) and most of her night feeds she would fall asleep within minutes of starting to feed and so would be up again in a couple hours as she was hungry. To try and break this cycle, I basically pumped a little more for a few days and started giving her the bottle a few times during the day (i gave around 3-4oz at 1pm, 3-4oz at 4pm), and then again 4oz at her bed time 7pm feed and again at around 11pm or 11:30pm. With the bottle, I could be sure that she was taking in enough milk, and thankfully, she went back to her earlier sleep patterns. Now I only pump 2 4oz bottles a day - I give her one at 7pm and then she sleeps straight through until 11 or 11:30pm at which time DH gives her another bottle. Then she normally only wakes once at night at around 3am. Am not sure if this would work for everyone, but it worked for us so may be worth trying. edited by GreenQueen on 02/05/2011

Try having your AC sterilised. There's a few companies that do this. Also use one of those sphere things in his room to clean the air out. Hope he gets better. We had something similar with DD who was on-off sick for 2 solid months with ear, eye and throat infections as well as a very nasty hacking cough and fevers. Ten days ago we had our AC ducts cleaned and sterilised and, touch wood, DD seems to be a lot better since. The firm that did it was EPSCO or something similar. It was pricey mind but worth every dirham as I was so worried about DD. DebsDebs - am glad you ended up trying EPSCO and I hope it has sorted out your problem. Were they able to tell you if you had some sort of mold problem in the room?
