Hi All Does anyone know if we can sponsor a houseboy rather than a maid if we are EK staff TIA Yes, no problem. We have done it for years. Just ignore all the references to 'housemaid' in the EK paperwork and apply the same way for houseboy. No issues.

The only people I know who will come to your house are Shampooch. We take ours to Positive Paws in Al Quoz, they're great Tail Waggin come to the house. They are ok. Easier to get an appointment with than Shampooch. I use both. Tail Waggin I think are cheaper

Our 5 cope well. They are all small. The back door is always open during the day so they come and go as they please into the garden. They are never left alone apart from 3-4 hours if we go fir dinner and our housekeeper is out, even then they have access to the garden. The younger two jump in the pool with us from time to time to cool down. One walk a day around 9pm. I would never have dogs if they are to be left alone. They need companionship.

Sounds like they were using the local midwakh pipe, a traditional pipe from the uae. The Iranian tobacco is normally purchased in medicine sized containers. I would suggest you begin to understand some local customs before posting slanderous comments on this site

Thank you got not taking offence. Just to add I don't schedule breaks my housekeeper plans the day. I have never been involved. I set my expectations of what should be done on day 1 many years ago and everything and much more is done. I provided good quality furnishings allowing housekeeper to choose fabrics etc. the provided Tv and DVD in early stages along with wireless access etc. since the. We have. Serious laptops, iPads etc over the years normally as Xmas or birthday gifts if as a onus after a particularly long spell of back to back house guests I really don't mean this to come across as unkind, but I do think if you are asking these questions you really need to ask yourself if you are ready to employ domestic staff? Every household is different with different expectations. My housekeeper in all honesty does work from around 6am - 9pm. 6am is through choice. We sort our own breakfast, always have and always will. Housekeeper is a naturally early riser. Huge swathes of time off during the day and helps clear up from dinner by choice if we are at home. Normally leaves Thursday afternoon and comes back sat night or sun morning. We just advise in advance if we are travelling, or need help with the zoo as we will be out a lot over the weekend. We really have a happy balance based on mutual respect and trust. We do pay way over the going rate but then I believe you get what you pay for! No no no, in fact I really appreciate your frank comments. I will think about it more careful and thoughtful. Thank you once again!

If the maid was no longer meeting my needs then I would clearly state this and agree on a period of notice. I certainly would not ban her. She's given you good years of service. Peoples needs/attitudes change and as an employer you have to accept this. Let her go on good terms and move on.

I'm with DR, whatever is in the fridge/cupboards is there for the taking. Anything bought for a particular dish/dinner party and I simply just mention this is for XYZ. Housekeeper eats exactly what we eat and at the same time (not leftovers) just doesn't eat with us through choice. Anything special that our housekeeper wants just gets added to the shopping list, nothing major, things like milk powder, certain biscuits etc. Its worked well for us for years here as it did in the uk.

REHOME.........!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Good day all, I'm new to EW and hoping some of you could help. We are settling back into Dubai after a year off to have the baby and I'm back at work. My husband takes care of my 9 month old full time at the moment until we find a nanny/maid so he could find some work in Dubai. So if anyone is re-homing their nanny/maid please reply to this thread and forward your maids numbers so I can set up interviews with them. Thanking you in advance.

Only government hospitals and clinics can administer yellow fever vaccinations. You can not get this through private clinics/hospitals. The vaccinations are only given in the morning between 8:00 - 14:00 Call rashid hospital and they will tell you the closest government clinic that has stocks

Honestly, I think you are made for each other.......poor girl is probably starving. The fact you are monitoring how much coffee she drinks says it all. First time hiring a full time filipina nanny...she doesn't cook at all...she says her sister always cooks for her back home, her food habits are different from ours ,right now I am doing the cooking...am I making a mistake here by cooking for her...should I just ask her to cook her own food she eats noodles for breakfast and she wants white rice for lunch...everyday we have fish for lunch and meat for dinner so I give her the same except she prefers kuboos for dinner.I am not planning to take her shopping with me coz it's just been 10 days with her and her lists keep increasing from day one...we waited for a long time to get an English speaking Muslim maid...so i got her everything she wanted till now but I am a bit concerned now in 5 days all the hand wash in all four bathrooms are finished large kids shampoo lotion everything got over in a week, floor cleaners large 1litre bottles she finished in 3 days I have had a parttime for the past 5 years never really bothered bout all this just got it wen things finished but I am sure it wasn't this frequent...am I overreacting,I tried to explain to her and she is like yes mam and the same thing repeats...if I am to get her food supplies what all should I get for her like beginning of month she likes coffee but 1 big bottle of Nescafé only lasted for bout a week...so do I just keep on buying it every week or just get her 1 bottle and a bag of white rice and noodles for a month and ask her to buy her own if she needs more...and what bout the fish and poultry if I am to get her separately do you provide fish and poultry daily for ur maid can someone also tell me how many kg rice bag I should get her for a month...sorry I am totally clueless here I was thinking a Maid would be a huge stress relief looks like the other way rite now...gave her a pair of new sandals and she asked for 2 more...got her one more...got her 4 sets of maid uniform and all the other stuff like soap shampoos etc...she keeps on asking next I want this next I want that gave her 4 dresses the first week she says it not enough she came with a huge bag of clothes.and past two days I noticed she is taking extra food from fridge without asking...what is the best way to deal with this...am I giving her too much freedom should I start restrictions right away...it's her first time in dubai her previous work experience is one year in Kuwait and two years in Saudi... edited by wowsmarties on 26/12/2013

Personally if your maid has been with you for a while I would assist. I have no hesitation in assisting our housekeepers family when I can, but then we have a relationship built on trust and respect and we've never had an issue. Personally I believe we all need a leg up sometimes in life.....

You can also have your prizes re-invested so presumably wouldn't need to have a UK bank account. But yes, you should be UK resident...Wouldn't be acceptable here anyway as it's gambling !! lol Nonsense. It's not gambling. Its an investment, not a lottery It's no different to national bonds or mashreq millionaire both of which are similar local equivalents.

Hi yes you do but I have them just left them registered at my Mums UK addie ;-) but not suppose to though Incorrect. You DO NOT have to be resident in the UK to invest in PB. I spoke with NSI when moved to Dubai years ago and they transferred all my correspondence to my address here in Dubai. Any prizes now are paid into my offshore sterling account. Most months I get either 25 or 50 pounds in prize money.

Jumeriah Carpentry - Mr Aslam, not the cheapest but excellent craftsmanship, alternatively, any of the carpenters in Satwa. Just walk along and ask them for quotes. In my experience best to go along with a clear drawing and measurements in order that they can quote you immediately.

My friend works in immigration. you will not be allowed to take your maid to the UK as you are not a UK national plus they have changed the laws and only holiday visas are issued not domestic worker visas, which is what she would need to work in the UK. This is a factually inaccurate statement on many levels Domestic worker visas are still issued and nationality of OP has nothing to do with it

I love my Wusthof knives, and wouldn't get anything else. Although I personally don't like them, a lot of people swear by their Global knives too. Both brands, plus the cheaper Zwilling JA Henckels (and more) are usually available at Tavola stores, and maybe Lakeland also? I didn't buy mine here, so can't remember the prices, sorry ... I second Wusthof, I have a large collection built up over the years, they are excellent. I normally pick mine up when in the US, they are much cheaper than here or UK

If you are asking this question, I think you need to ask yourself if you are ready to employ domestic help either here or anywhere else in the world. This is a job, think of what you require from the maid, put together a job description if it helps and then develop some basic questions to ensure the maid fits your requirements. I also believe you have go with your gut feelings with domestic staff, if you have any tiny niggling doubt or concern, don't go there.

Grumpy - how much did you pay for the driving lessons with Emirates? (if you don't mind me asking) as do you have to have them at specific times or can you choose? No worries, i paid an initial amount of 1k to open file, get Lerner driver permit etc, I think that also included the mandatory lectures. I then paid 1500 as he started with his first lessons. I am sure I need to pay more again this week. I think the min was around 4 k if passing first time. I didn't want to pay everything upfront as didn't know if our housekeeper would take to driving, it was a gamble that looks like it may pay off. I still want him to have more lessons though, to ensure he is confident on our crazy roads. You choose yourslots that work for you, 2 hour slots, twice per week. They seem flexible if you need to move the odd one. I have found them nothing but helpful. My housekeeper can be quite demanding (high standards) and wanted to change instructor to one based in another EDI branch, the file transfer was conducted within a day and no charges. Very professional.

I have just been around all the driving schools gathering info and prices as we need our housekeeper to learn to drive. I went with Emirates Driving Institute as they were the most professional of all in my opinion. Our housekeeper started 3 weeks ago, has already passed theory and parking test having never sat behind the steel before. I am very impressed.

I did when the ID cards first launched, however, I don't think they offer that service any more as they have to be collected from a post office. I have always clearly specified and reconfirmed it should be sent my local post office and not some obscure location like Deira, Al Quasis, or Karama. Has worked so far. Good Luck If you live in Bur Dubai then Deira and Karama are not obscure locations at all!!!!! Very true Wuffles, and no offence intended.

Emirates are great for Kids. Their in-flight entertainment is the best in the industry, with many kids channels to choose from. They will also provide toys, colouring books etc. Crew are normally great with kids and really help parents out on long flights. If you get J class, depending on where you are flying from, you may be routed on an A380' which has more space in JC to move around and keep him more enclosed so as not to disturb other pax. Also, A380 has a very nice bar area for you to enjoy a cocktail or two to calm your nerves.
