A lot of the bigger companies do this regardless of what they said in relation to liability in the credit letter. Qatar Airways certainly does as I fell foul of this when I changed jobs. Yes they don't technically freeze the account but they take any loan and credit card facilities back so unless you've got a very good balance it's the same thing! I know that, for example, the standard HSBC banking letter contains a promise to inform the bank if the employee will no longer be paid his/her salary into that account. Not everyone does though. Good points in the above post . It's best not to follow The H.S.B.C template as it just makes the company liable and to also put a waiver on the end rejecting any liablility . Being cute is usually the best option when doing business with Middle Eastern Banks

Not that this helps the OP but companies in Qatar must inform your bank when your last working day/pay cheque will be. The bank will not, contrary to popular belief, freeze your account. It will limit the balance so that it doesn't fall below any outstanding debt that you have - but any monies that you have above the amount owed will be available. There is no law which governs private companies to inform the bank of a final settlement payment . It's at the companies discretion . Companies do this as they usually do not follow the basic rules when writing an employers no objection letter for a bank account in the first place and therefore they could be liable for any unsecured credit . Bank accounts can be frozen and i know of ex residents here who have had trouble with a certain bank due to payment issues . I do actually find the banking system here in Qatar is better than what i have encountered in other Gulf countries . There seems more professionalisim here than Dubai , that's a personal expereience though , no doubt there's the usual horror stories around.

Will it not also depend if your current company ( That is if you work) inform the bank that you are leaving your job. If so, your bank account will be frozen if you have any outstanding debt. That's a very good point , some companies in the U.A.E will inform the bank that the final salary payment is due at a specific time and any monies owed should be deducted from this payment . This is usually if a company has guaranteed the employee and underwritten any specific unsecured credit . Most companies will state in their initial letter to the bank that they hold zero responsibility for the employees credit or debt accrual and they are at no liablity of any loss that is subjected through to the bank .

Your visa situation here in Qatar will not be affected by any loan or debt that you now have in the U.A.E . Technically you cannot have a bank account or debt in the U.A.E if you do not hold a residence visa . Going to your U.A.E bank could be a doubler edged sword or sorts . If you tell them that you're leaving they could technically impose a travel ban and submit a police case until the debt is payed in full . I know this sounds a very serious way of doing things but believe me banks in The Middle East are less than we say proactive with their customer service. If you have a decent relationship with the bank then you couuld be upfront but there's no guarantee that you'll get the result you want . You can also leave , come to Qatar and transfer your money each month to keep up the payments on the debt . The bank will be none of the wiser as long as the payments are met as your agreement. On the subject of loans and credit here in Qatar your info is off the mark . Credit and loans can be issued immediatley as long as you meet certain criteria set by the specific bank . Obviously you'll need employers permission and all depending what your monthly salary is then that will depend on whats on offer to you as an individual . My advice and i've seen a lot of expats fall foul in Dubai is to make a very measured choice but never ever put your liberty at stake here in The Gulf.

We all have a different view which makes life colourful . Try and not be defensive as i'm not attacking you in any way shape or form . I'm just giving you an opinion and trying to be objective. Me and my husband live a nice life here and enjoy it but Doha is best a functional city whch in fact is dull and mundane like most cities in the GCC . Dubai is on a par with Singapore , Hong Kong and K.L , a vibrant center and hub for commerce , tourisim and travel . Enjoy Sports day ladies , i'm sure the world class events and hospitality will have us fully entertained

Hi there , Thought i'd reply to this interesting thread after a few months of looking at this great informative forum . After picking up a host of great tips from the other ladies i'd thought i'd dip my timy feet with great trepidation . Ive been resident here in Qatar for nearly 2 years now and before that spending 6 years living in Dubai and before that another 10 years in Muscat , Jeddah and Abu Dhabi and also a period of time before that in The Far East. I believe i have enough years experience to draw on to be able to answer some of the points asked without getting to emotional or perochial about any city in The Gulf . I must agree with Irn Bru that Doha is my least favorite city to live as it just does not have enough to offer . That's not a slur on it's people or the place , it just lags behind and will continue to lag behind for many years to come in my opinion . I have met some wonderful people here but also a feeling that everyone is ready to move on if given the chance. Coming from Dubai to Doha can be difficult as the you are limited in every aspect of your life here , whether that's public transport to schooling through to shopping , yes we all adapt and fit in with our surroundings but that does not deter away from the plain fact of having choice. Aime85's comment of" how we dont know how lucky we are" is quite an emotional turm of phrase but one i feel which is not based on any substantial facts ladies. I for one know i'm not lucky because it's my choice to be here and being here is a means to an end as we'll all leave eventually . I enjoy being here in Qatar as it's the perfect base for us to live our lives and gives us the freedom to continue with our current lifestyle. The trouble is that Qatar is not the perfect country . In my opinion being based in Dubai totally outweighs any aspect of life over Doha , from taxis to airports to customer service to 5 star hotels Dubai wins hands down. People will say it's not like for like but i'm afraid it is like for like as there's very little to seperate the culture of GCC states . Doha is a nice little city that's going through massive change , how it handles that change will be interesting but one things for sure it will never ever be another Dubai.
