Morning London 72 I used to live in Hampton and I know Hampton School is one of the top schools there as my son attended all his senior years there. He did very well in his exams and is now in Finance (Hedge Fund). Next door to Hampton School, is Lady Eleanor Holles School and they do have friendly field games and school debates on a regular basis. Good luck with your choice of schools and place to live. :)

fairydust Correct. The taxi drivers do not have a salary. It's the mileage that is accumulated that becomes their commission and that is actually their salary. Thus the reason why passengers get taken round in circles if they don't know where the Exit of the Mall is.

Yes, it's perfectly correct. This has been the right price for quite some time. I take the unfortunate taxis regularly to the Malls and yoga. Whenever I order a taxi, it starts anything from 12 AED before 1000 and 8 AED after that. At Dubai Mall, the charge is 8 AED before 1400 Ithink but from later afternoon, it is 12 AED. Beware that you may get a longer ride inside any shopping Mall car park and the driver takes you round in circles. Very few drivers I have had will go to the right entrance. They say they know where to go but they haven’t got a clue. The more mileage they accumulate, the more commission goes to their salary. I always check with the drivers if they know where to take me when I open the door without getting into the car. I automatically go for the next taxi when they don't know the way. I have called RTA a few times and gave them a hard time. Remember, the registration of the taxi is marked on both sides of the internal car in case you don't have time to take the car reg number down once you get down. If you have a problem, always take a photo from your mobile. I arrived back from London yesterday morning and as I was travelling solo, I was directed to a female taxi driver. She asked me if I could help her with my one luggage. My reply was, 'don't worry, I will get someone who can lift my luggage' Pointless being a driver who can't lift a normal 20kg luggage!

Hi m_king I highly recommend Zanzibar. My husband and I were there end of November. You will have to take Malaria tablets two days before going to on to your destination and I think it's five days of the tablets upon your return. Yellow Fever vaccination is debatable but we went with it and now we have it, it's for life. We flew with FlyDubai. Around 5.5 hours to Dar-Es-Salaam, stopped for an hour to clean up the flight for the return then off we flew again and landed on the island in about 15=20 minutes. We chose Nungwi beach which is north of the island, beautiful beaches. Stayed at Hideaway Resort and Spa and chose an all-inclusive as we didn't feel like going anywhere. For me, it was the meals rather than the drinks that were important, for my husband, he likes to have his drinks. Lots of beach activities. If you chose the all-inclusive, you get a butler who will get your drinks for you even at the beach or wherever you are outside. But then there are lots of other great places to stay too over at Nungwi. In fact all other places in Zanzibar is very good. x

Hi Aquarius2016 I know this is a bit late now but for future in case you want to bake, try using the following. There is xylitol which is an expensive natural sugar substitute that is powder so it mimics the texture of sugar. You can always use apple sauce or honey into muffins as this have a rough texture anyway so the finished sponge doesn’t have to be too fine. Basically sugar provides the nice fluffy texture of sponge and if you use a sugar substitute that is liquid, you get a dense sponge. There is also agave syrup but it doesn’t taste right somehow. Definitely, most sweeteners are bad for anyone, let alone babies. :)

Hi seasand I know how you feel. This is something different. Almost a year ago, I bought a pair of Gianvito Rossi sandals online from UK but the Size 4 was slightly on the large side. For a refund, I had to send the sandals back to its headquarters – Bologna, and not to London. The problem was DHL here could not get hold of the company in Bologna port, as the company gave the incorrect telephone number. I suspect that they were trying not to refund me. The parcel was left at Customs for a month. Don’t know why that DHL could not call the warehouse. The courier to Bologna cost me over £100. Although it was expensive, I was able to get a good part of my money back. I highly recommend DHL who kept me informed of the whereabouts of the missing parcel on a regular basis.

Zuhairah When was the last time you visited Zanzibar? I am confused. Some are going without the certificate but if it's required it will be too late when we arrive at customs and have to have a jab. We are not going anywhere remote, just within the hotel and probably to Stone Town.

Love Kerastase and Aveda products. It seems Aveda have finally opened in Dubai, I haven't tried their salon here but the one in London is great and I have read good reviews of the one in Dubai. http://www.luxurialifestyle.ae/the-best-hair-salon-in-dubai-aveda-dubai-flagship-salon/ I used to have very thick long hair and when I moved here, it started to fall out and became really dull. When I started taking Perfectil Platinum tablets, drinking fenugreek seed water and going for weekly hair oil massages, there was a significant difference. I also put a water filter on my shower. I had a colour done about three weeks ago at Aveda. Pretty good. You get a quick hand and back massage as well while you are waiting for your appointment. Also wanted to have my eyebrows tidied. What I didn't fancy was they tried to do two things at once. While I was having my hair washed, the girl was painting my eyebrows! So either one had to stop while the other carried on and so forth. I took one look and told her to start again. By the third time, I have had enough then. No more. At the counter, I was offered a free eyebrow tidy the next time I book. I kindly declined. Will go back for the hair colour and a cut though.

thanks Silverstet. Lettie, no, it's not in Bloomingdales. Don't know about Essas. Marina10, I thought it might be that the delivery will not come across here to my apartment. Okay, will check this out. Strangely, I am using Clarins and want to change it. Yes, I just have to be 100% I want it as I will have to pay for postage back. While typing the word Elemis, it came out ''elemis.ae'' so I may also look into this here. Thank you all so much for your replies. ;)

Hi samram and Marina10 I have been going round to all the Malls and wondered why there are no Elemis products. Also JohnLewis.com will deliver but I think there is a minimum delivery charge. Would have preferred to pay dirhams as currently the rates are better than the sterling. But it may even out with all the discounts from UK. Thanks very much indeed. bye:

But didn't our great grandparents die young ?? As FairyDust said, her folks lived till a grand old age. I think folks in those times were petite. Diet plays a part although there were those who smoked as well apart from some healthy ones. Fewer cars, no supermarkets, more walking to the local shops, very little food (no packaging) that had to be consumed within a few days. I think lard was probably very common in those days. No gym needed so out in the sunshine to the local shops. No television before the 1950s so to spend their time, people tend to read books, I guess. So libraries were very popular. Correct me if I am wrong - after all, I didn't even know my grandparents, they all die before I was born!

Hi smartee Organic food is not full of pesticides and hormones. It is the food that our great grandparents would have eaten. I don’t think it’s necessary to buy all food organic. For me, I will buy non-organic food that has a thick skin whereby I have to cut a large chunk off eg. celeriac, avocado or sweet potato. Unless there is a special offer on. Basically for me, organic food tastes better.

Honestly, I would give the kid a 'hard' stare and if the kid does not get the message to shut up, then you need to ask the parents kindly to keep the noise level down a bit. After all, it is a public place for everyone to eat in peace and if it still does not work, then ask the waiter to move you to another table far away from them!

Hi Daisyduke If you are looking for an admin position and it’s lowly paid, you might as well economise on child care and food. Do you go to Mothers and Toddlers at the nearest Coffee Mornings organised by ExpatWoman? How about experimenting with different ways of cooking and trying out sauces and herbs? Cook a large meal, divide it up for say two or three meals. Then freeze it. That way, it not only saves you money, it saves you time as well. Start small and see how you get on. You never know, after a while, you will be in the kitchen cooking up a storm! For two of us, we spend around 1000 AED a week, excluding wine. Sometimes a wee bit less. We don’t go out to eat, unless it is for a special occasion. We head to two supermarkets weekly: Carrefour and Spinneys. Carrefour is within our building here so that’s easy. There is no delicatessen for fresh mixed salad or a pork section but there is some good stuff there. Very small section on organic vegetables. I don’t buy all things organic though. Regular foods we get from Spinneys are Innocent, green vegetable and mixed berries juices, large punnets of blueberries and multigrain bread. Just fussy, I guess.

Morning mjvdp9 Well, I try to have a 'win-win' situation. The stress at work is all accumulating so for both our sake, a break from here iso the answer and now's the opportunity with the few day's holiday coming up. Yes, we decided this is better as it looks as if Mauritius is currently overrated. Looking at booking.com and doing it myself but the flights are more expensive so no choice but to go for a packaged holiday. Waiting for the travel agent to come back. Have a super day! :)

Hi all Was at lunch this afternoon at Souk Al Bahar and across the arcade, came to a carpet shop, in fact two shops but only managed to go into one. It's Kashmir rugs but also Iranian rugs. How does these compare with Persian rugs? I would prefer wool rugs as I have bought rugs from Afghanistan in Cape Town a decade ago. Around five years back whilst on a cruise, we were shown to a multitude of rugs in Istanbul. Wool and silk this time. Free shipment back to UK, arrived intact. Just wondered if anyone has bought Kashmir rugs before as they look quite good today but am not so keen on some of the designs. One medium size came up to AED50,000. Is this correct? No bargaining yet though.

Rang Mahal in JW Marquis Hotel We were there on New Year’s Day so menus will have changed by now. At that time, there were two types of menu – a la carte or a signature 9-course Navratan menu. We chose the latter. The smell, aroma, taste, colour and presentation of our meal was to die for! Everything was so precise.

The sweet, sour, salty and savoury: all in one taste. Although this calibre of food deserves the Michelin star, it’s pricey but worth it.

All depends on the number of stops and where your delivery is going to be: Felixstowe or Tilbury. Our shipment from South Africa went from Cape Town to Durban to Madagascar, to Reunion Island, then somewhere to India. Landed up in Singapore and then on to Sydney before going on to Perth, our final destination. It took eight weeks. In contrast, our return from Perth to UK, took six weeks, both on a 40 ft container. I could be wrong and it could be much faster now. Very best of luck to you, andrea60. x

Like a few others, I left it too late to vote. My gut feeling is that most people voted out did it on a racist basis – Little ****** Englanders! Also I think those who voted out are living in a dream world, yearning after an England that doesn’t exist anymore. Now with Article 50, we will probably have to wait another year before we know where we stand and with the credit rating, there goes our mortgage. On the other hand, bursting the housing bubble sounds good enough for youngsters trying to buy a house. Perhaps we will start getting tax free green beans from Kenya or cheaper Pinotage from South Africa into Sainburys or Waitrose, not that I care too much about wine.

My recent visit to India at an Ayurveda treatment allows you up to three enemas during the two weeks stay! The so-called healthy diet was about 700 calories per day! All guests are allowed to have an enema, but I somehow missed it. I wouldn’t mind having an oil-based enema. It’s not the end of the world….no harm trying. A larger than life man had the colonic irrigation and he highly recommend and will be coming back the following month. Last week I had an investigation at MediClinic whereby I had to have a Meal Plan the day before. This consists of taking tablets, cleansing yourself thoroughly and you just basically have a continuous ‘waterfall’. I might as well take my book and read in the loo! This I would say is 10 times worse.

Hi MollyMooMoo Sorry to hear about your plants. As I only have a small patio, I thought four potted plants will do with some garden furniture. When we came back from leave recently, the Frangipani plant, now almost 2.5m tall was dropping its leaves and we thought it had died because of the heat! Of course not. I forgot that it's deciduous and the leaves drop and now its back to normal and flowering. I insert water retention gel into the soil as deep as I can into all the pots, and barks were previously on the top soil. Actually, one of the plants looked very untidy so I gave it a bald hair cut before I left on holiday and when I came back, all the leaves had appeared. I do hope and am sure some of your plants will revive after a while. Good luck. x

Years ago, I had two suits and a dress made at Ravis International at the Mercure Hotel, Bangkok. I don't know what their workmanship is like now. I don't know why I brought my trouser suit here with me, that's where the telephone number is. I have looked at trip advisor for their reviews and it's mostly very good but a few disappointing ones. Unfortunately, you have to be in Bangkok to try it on. At least three days. Their telephone number is 2530510 extn 2335. I am in between a Size 12 and 14 and when I was in KL last year, I asked for some dresses and the sizes over there does not fit me. So best to have it tailor made. I gave Ravis an eight out of 10. Have not been to Krabi or Chang Mai but the family loved Phuket. Have a super time.:)

Sorry, I got lost trying to find ChitChat! FairydDust, of course there will be trading. Why shouldn't there be? I am talking nonsense! Hi sarahlou123, I know. My husband and I will be going a different route from our two children in London (I think). For business, it will make no difference as London is so much larger in global importance than EU. I am very much for the NHS. Have worked there for some time and have great faith in them but feel it's time everyone pays a small bit to keep it alive and going. Even £5 per person to begin with to see a doctor will make a huge difference to the NHS. It would be a great shame if visa is required for every European country we visit. That would be a real pain. Hi Saggi_1 Whatever has been ‘borrowed’, small or large, may not always be in the house by the time you notice it. It will be outside sent to friends elsewhere when your maid is on her day off. I have a different way of doing things. I would replace it and put a nice written note next to it, in small saying ‘please ask Mam's permission. If it happens again, I would call her to have a chat and tell her you have no choice but to let the agency know to get another replacement. Full stop. I never had any problems with any of my au pair plus girls from Europe when the children were growing up many years ago. All they care about was how big your house was. One came and took one good look at our then semi-detached house in Hampton (outside London) and left. To help me run my guesthouse in South Africa, I had a team of three, one part-timer. One of them being a live-in maid. Like someone said, they are great in the beginning but after a while, the ‘borrow’ your stuff incident begins whether its edible or not, small or large. Here the agency has to be informed regardless, reasons given for any dismissal. I don’t know what the rules are now but a few years back, the working hours for maids are 45 hour week, one hour for lunch, 15 minutes for morning coffee and 15 minutes afternoon tea and one day to one and a half day off a week. If it’s quiet, the maid goes off. It’s tough though working for someone like me who owns a four star guesthouse and a number one out of the 24!! They have to make up an Inventory List of all the stuff in the house, checked regularly. There was a couple in Cape Town, wife was SA and husband’s English and they have two young teenagers. The maid looking after them had a young daughter also in her early teens. The English guy was even helping with the maid’s daughter’s school fees (to make sure she gets a good education). What do you think the maid did when there was enough jewellery lying around? She thought hey, I have been slogging my guts out for this family for 13 years; surely I deserve something bigger for myself? It was instant dismissal!
