Thanks for the ideas! I'm not familiar with those areas, do you know which might be easiest for me to access since I live in Mirdiff and basically only drive to Business Bay? Maybe something in Satwa? Mr Ben's Costume Closet is in Satwa... in the mall at end of 2nd December street (or Al Diyafah road as it used to b called) ... closest to Jumeirah1... they are pretty responsive by phone so probably worth calling them up and asking about the leather hand glove/arm glove before making the trek there some malls have tourist shops that might sell the toy falcons... but i can't remember the names of the stores... or if u can get down to Madinat Souq they have many of these stores selling antique stuff

how much do you need? for 300dhs you get to buy around 20kg from carbonic international but you would be left with loads left over? maybe share the expense with a neighbour? you could also try Iceworks in Karama... theirs is packaged in 5kg packs but I've not used them before so not sure if they have a minimum order quantity

the leather arm you can probably pick up at one of the costume stores like Mr Bens Closet though it might be more a glove than an arm and for the toy falcon why not check the tourist shops in Bastakiya or Madinat or most of the malls... they might have a stuffed toy that would fit the bill

well see the idea (or at least how I understand it from the way it is structured in countries such as the USA and Canada) is that people are restricted to attending the state schools that are in their district. which also means that housing is more expensive in areas that have the supposedly 'better' schools... i think today the way in which schools have been spaced out geographically offers parents much more opportunity to send their kids to a different schools based on their budget... for example, if they were living in Satwa / Jumeirah 1/2/3 they could attend JBS, JPS, JC, Horizon, Al Shurouq, Al Ittihad, EC, Oasis, Emirates English Speaking School, WPS, JESS... etc... just at my school, for example, we have children traveling down from Greens, jebel ali, jbr, deira and even abu dhabi!! and we wonder WHY we have a traffic problem in the city!

well dubai police take traffic violations very seriously and everytime a complaint it raised to the 8004353 number they send the driver an sms warning that a complaint has been made against their reckless driving... three complaints and a fine is issued! so yes, please people... do complain if you are faced with a similar situation... if all these violations get reported the police will be in a better position to monitor and control these... the eyes of the public are more valuable than the eyes behind a CCTV control room... all u need to do is note down the driver's registration number, type of car, the street/area you were in when the violation happened (this is to cross check with the camera footage) and also the time of the occurrence...

now that we have a substantial number of schools in town (with majority of them being Good or Outstanding) it would be really useful to see a planned district based school system... so basically children living in and around a particular area would only be allowed to go to schools within that specific radius. this would help ease some of the chaotic traffic ... there are some parents at our school who are always moaning and groaning about traffic to school but I don't blame them as they are usually coming from distances 30kms away from school twice or more times daily! i believe this is the policy in many developed countries for their state school management system

i'm all for getting a good deal/discount for many things but when it comes to my health I'd prefer to go to a more trusted/reliable vendor... i've done eye surgeries (laser and ICL) at City Hospital in Healthcare City... they have a team of highly trained doctors and have carried out a number of complex surgeries so have the experience to back their knowledge. the LASIK surgery there used to be only AED 8500 inclusive of all procedures, scans, consultations so perhaps worth going there for the security that it's a more established clinic... and of course upon consultation if you're not a good candidate for the LASIK they are more than capable of handling other more complex alternatives as well...

The Proud Alex reply thread seems to be a flicker of hope With 680 views it's definitely got the scope Perhaps some will jump to his agreement And stir up some views much vehement And that should give this dreary Sunday morning a lift Unless someone else comes up with a dramatic maid story that we just cant resist!

unfortunately she will have to stay out her contract with them... i do agree that they were a bit harsh with her for losing out on her NOL card and not replacing it but keep in mind that they are managing a very large workforce and if they kept reimbursing staff for their lost personal items they would shortly be out of business... as an example... when the screen of my work laptop was destroyed by my kids when they accidentally tipped it off my dining table I could not claim the same from my company (they only upgrade our laptops every three years) so I did have to shell out for a new one myself... with regards to deducting her salary for breaking something at home unfortunately that is also in their right... many agency maids damage client property due to negligence, accident or pure carelessness. It's tough for the agencies to determine the cause as they were not witness to it so the only blanket HR policy would be to deduct a fixed amount (whatever they are liable to pay their end client) from the concerned person's salary companies shell out of a lot of money to bring in these maids... they invest in their accommodation, insurance, etc and it's hardly likely that they would be willing to overlook these costs simply to be able to give the employee in concern a chance at a better life! i honestly think she has an above average pay with them (many agency maids i have interacted with only get between 600 and 800dhs in salary...shocking yes, but true) i know you want to help her and that is very noble of you but the best bet here would be really to stay out of her affairs with the company... as horrible as it sounds... now if they were underpaying her or her accommodation was unfit for living or they were subjecting her to physical abuse then yes it would be totally within your scope to complain to higher authorities... but nothing of what you've said would really hold up with the authorities... even the working hours... and please don't believe everything you hear from her... 7am to 11pm is ridiculous (normally they are on 12 hour a day contracts) but she could have been covering for someone's leave or at an emergency or she might not be accounting for the hours she spent not working but commuting etc... we have employees at our office who work from 8am to 6pm but unfortunately many of them live in sharjah and ajman so often leave their homes around 5:30am and only reach back home at 8:30pm but that doesn't equate to our company making them work for 15-16hours a day...

a number of single women looking to save some money yet live in nicer neighbourhoods use the option of sharing their living space with a friend or room-mate... do you have anyone at your workplace who would consider this as an option? some people do advertise for room-mates but it would be wiser to choose someone you know at perhaps work (that way you could even share cab rides to work)

I have no idea, ladies, LTS, yes, he should be punished, but I guess he was naive and didn't think it would be as bad as it actually is. I'm not sure I want them to repeat a year, because with that comes a stigma from their friends - they're at an age now where they might be teased about it. So if I'm going to move them, i may as well move them to the American curriculum if it's a more suitable curriculum. I just don't feel doing division and multiplication and being expected to take spelling tests each week is age appropriate for 7 year olds. My eldest, (by one minute) is coping (just), but the younger is shutting off - she gets frustrated and just turns her brain off and refuses to learn anything. They're both feeling discouraged. :( a lot of it also has to do with the way the children are taught mathematical concepts... why not look at moving them to a less academic focused British curriculum? i'd recommend the school my children go to... where they do maths suited to their individual abilities... my eldest is in Year 4 but does math with Year 5 coz she's above average for her class...

i've not been in the same dilemma per se but after 39 years of marriage i would think it would be wiser to just compromise and move down here with him and enjoy ur time together in this new city... the next six to seven months are a lovely time to be here anyway with the city buzzing with activity and lots of opportunities to see and do things together outdoors... and maybe if you don't feel like it's working for u then u could just head back home once the brutal summer starts to set in... 18 months is not a long time when u consider how long you two have been together!

you will have to inquire at the Dubai Immigration because as per their policy you can only apply for maid visa for specific nationalities (and I definitely don't remember seeing Russian on that list)... what some people do if they have their own company/business if bring this said person on the company visa although technically they will be working as a maid... be warned though that this is not legal (though many people have been successfully doing it for years)...

do you live in a compound or an apartment block? if so you will notice kids going around on the night trick or treating... i've experienced this both with apartment living as well as in our current compound... some people go all out and decorate and supply oodles of candy while some don't! in our compound the management company sends out a letter every year saying that if u don't want to participate leave ur porch lights off and then the kids know that they aren't to ring the bell on that villa...

Il certainly have a look at that one! And thanks a ton for your quick response! Heard BON is way too exp! Nways.. I shall chk on these... The one u said.. Wat curriculum do they follow? the playschool is actually managed and run by Filipinos... i wouldn't say it's cheap and probably follows the same fee structure as British Orchard... but they have a good student/teacher ratio and they took very good care of my daughter... in the phillipines De La Salle is a university where teachers go to get their degrees/qualifications ... they follow the Montessori curriculum however, if you're looking for something cheaper look at the Asian nurseries such as Smart Children's, Happy Home, New Dubai Nursery... these have much more competitive fees but subsequently their student teacher ratio is not the same as those in the other places not sure if you'll find much feedback on those nurseries on this forum though... have you look at the IndusLadies forum?

i had bought mine from one of the HomesRUs stores (Mazaya Centre)... it was on sale when i purchased it and that store seems to be on sale quite a lot! ;-) the model that i bought cost me around 375dhs... it comes in three versions i think... but the 600 and 900 watts ones are the most popular... its excellent and literally blends anything (even harder fruit like apples, figs, prunes, etc.) quickly (matter of seconds!) i also find it convenient to carry along with me to work... my usual breakfast blend includes a handful of spinach, celery, flax seeds, apple, kiwi, grapes and some dried figs... you can add water or milk to loosen the consistency happy juicing!

hi we will be letting our lovely house help from Nepal go in May next year... she has been with us for four years and is very hardworking, diligent and takes excellent care of my kids... however she is now looking for a higher salary than we can afford to spare at this stage so if you would want to consider her I'm more than happy to recommend her (though she's only available from 7th of May). We are arriving at new year with a view to looking for a maid after a few months so beginning of May would probably be about right. I wouldn't want to commit in case things change but would be interested in finding out a bit more. She sounds lovely. Is she live in or out? What salary is she looking for etc... Thanks She is live-in at the moment and I'm presuming she would want to retain that sort of living arrangement as it works out more cost efficient for her... she is currently earning AED 1500 per month with us (plus extras for bdays, religious holidays, etc.), annual air ticket (or encashed), health insurance, annual flights home (or encashed) and she has unlimited access to all supplies at home (food, toiletries, etc.). She gets all Fridays off and for public holidays we give her one day off or cash in lieu if we need her to help out on that day. She is looking for a pay rise to AED 2000 per month and at this stage I can't quite afford to part with that per month as we have other financial commitments that take higher priority. Hence we have decided to not renew her contract in April and give her a release to find a new employer. As I mentioned she's from Nepal and speaks little or no English. She does speak Hindi quite fluently so would ideally be more suited to a family from the Asian subcontinent. She is very hard working and has a real gift for cleaning, ironing and cooking! We have been VERY pleased with her quality of work. Of course, she does have her pet peeves such as an obsessive mobile phone addiction but heh we're all entitled to some vices! Like I mentioned she would be available from 7th of May.

Hi... if u live in Abu Hail I'd recommend you take a tour of KidzMate in Mamzar... it's a lovely small nursery run and managed by Indians but teaching the Montessori style of early years learning... if you like it then it would be a steal coz their fees are quite competitive Alternatively if you can stretch ur drive to Deira then they have a branch of British Orchard there though i do believe that their fees are on the higher side...
