Ideally you should put your child in a nursery that is closest to your home (or if you're working - place of work) so that the transportation and commuting to and fro is easier on both you and your child. If you let us know what area you reside in it would help us to offer specific suggestions... Some nurseries & daycare centres take in children as young as 3months of age... but ideally 18-24 months is a more appropriate age...

Thanks a lot HorizonMum2 :) I have already got in touch with Volunteer UAE and Lola Lopez and waiting for their reply. I am however looking for a place that we can visit along with our children. We want them to be involved in distributing those gifts and maybe spend some time or do an activity with the children we will be visiting. Also try the Senses Residential Home for children with special needs... again not orphans but they also accept volunteers and donations

when is ur party for? could you possibly have it outdoors? the parks are quite lovely! or have a look at Fun City (Oasis Centre or Lamcy Plaza) they offer party packages from AED 65/- per child... I also know that a new party zone has opened up at Union Coop (behind ShangriLa on Shk zayed Road)... not sure of their rates though but can't imagine them being too expensive

To have a good hair treatment kera straight or blowout or keratin done in under 1000 Dhs? I have called all the recommended salons, they all are ridiculously expensive. Please give me more recommendations. Has anyone tried groupon deals? How was the experience ? I am scared to try after listening all the horror stories. I am so desperate with my extremely frizzy hair. Hiiii, I lovvvveeeeee the way Aliza at Beauty Plus Salon works. She is no nonsense hairdresser. Tell her your budget, seek her advice and go accordingly.....You will be surprised with fantastic results. Rates are very fair and definitely much cheaper than other salons. I am sure, You should be able to get Blowout treatment within your budget from Beauty Plus Salon.... unless your hair are extremely long or thick. Groupon deals are like gambling - you don't know what you are going to get  I won't recommend to use groupon for hair. ETA: if you can check their promos... You can get a bargain. One time I did blowout for 700 Dhs and the other time for 1000 Dhs. @Horizonmum2 Seems you havnt been to Beauty Plus for long, they do not offer any other services now :) yes actually i havent been in a year and a half... my hair has been behaving so far... but will need to schedule a trip soon!! Glad to hear that they stopped all other services as it wasnt doing their reputation any favors! for hair treatments they are still my number one choice!

I can personally recommend this small salon in Satwa called Beauty Plus Salon as I have been going there every year for hair straightening for my rather frizzy/wavy hair. It's in a shady lil building in Satwa but the hair expert there Alizeh REALLY knows her stuff. She does close to 20 rebonding/straightening treatments a week so is quite experienced. She's also very honest in telling you whether a particular treatment will work for your style of hair or not and sets very realistic expectations on regrowth, how to manage your hair, post treatment, etc. Plus she doesn't try to sell you every single product in their store! Beauty Plus Salon Phone: 055 182 3918 104, Dallas Holidays Travel Building, Opposite Gift Garden, Near Satwa Bus Station and Emarat Petrol Pump, Satwa My only suggestion would be to ONLY go there for your hair treatment ... don't try anything else in the salon... I tried the waxing and HATED it... the place is only good for the hair and they offer Schwarzkopf rebonding, Kerating Straightening, Brazilian Blowouts etc for a fraction of the market rates... keep in mind though that their costs are superrr low coz of their location and size! Be warned the treatment takes around 4hours so best to take a good book or ur ipod!

hi... i'm a party planner and from my experience most of the soft play areas for younger children come equipped with the rubber flooring, soft toys, educational toys, mini slides, etc. Ideally, its best to stay away from the more popular ones as these tend to be overcrowded... so, imho, go for some of the newer places like Pixies & Ponies or the tried and tested Favourite Things... all places allow a moderate amount of decorations and you can cater food from them or from outside... Limetree is a favourite for platter style catering or you could also look at getting mini sandwiches, etc from bakeries or Union Coop (if you're on a budget)... for cakes there are a host of bakers to choose from depending on ur budget!

hi we have been at Horizon school since FS2 (similar to KG2 in the Indian syllabus)... and my elder DD is now in Yr4 and my younger one is starting this Sept into FS1 (similar to KG1 in the Indian syllabus)... we've been very happy with the school and my elder one has completely thrived there... they have French once or twice a week but it is not taught as strictly as Hindi would be in an Indian curriculum school. Arabic on the other hand has a heavy focus but I honestly feel that has more to do with being able to meet the standards set by KHDA. Arabic happens to be a fav subject at Horizon because they make it so much fun! My daughter even plays rock/paper/scissors in Arabic using the Arabic words for the elements. they have along school day 7:30am (students need to be dropped off by 7:20am) all the way to 2:40pm and following that they have a choice of afterschool activities - free activities run by school teachers - paid activities run by external companies (such as gymnastics, ballet, skiing, etc.) - squad activities (if your child's sporting level qualifies him to join one of the school sport teams) Once students are in Yr 6 at Horizon they start applying to other secondary schools... the most popular ones are DESC, DC, JC and JESS. All those schools have entrance tests to enter. Since Horizon International is a sister school, at present, Horizon Yr 6 students get preferential entry into Yr 7 at Horizon International. happy to discuss this further but would prefer to take it offline... feel free to get in touch [email protected]

Hi Dangerous Blonde - i got married in Dubai in November. I had about 60 guests in the day. The wedding did cost us a fortune but was worth every minute. Alcohol is really expensive but why not have a drinks package instead of the champagne as this is what i did and helped to reduce the price. I also organised a lot of things myself so saved money there. 100K for 80 guests is a good budget. For the flowers i actually arranged for them to be delivered on the morning of the wedding and my mum tied some ribbon around them and they looked amazing......the shops wanted to charge me about 10K too for a wedding bouquet. In the evening i had a cash bar as well. I also know a great make up artist who was one of the cheapest i tried but also the best. She was the only one who didnt make me look like a drag queen with heavy eye make up. I know a great hairdresser too.... Hope this helps edited by Bracey777 on 26/03/2012 Hi there Old post I know but would be great if you were still out there. Are you able to share your make up artist and hairdresser that you used as I am getting silly quotes at the moment. Many thanks SH12... i recently used a freelancer for hair&makeup for a small wedding reception i organised and i thought she was priced quite reasonable... her charges are i think 600 for bridal hair and 700 for bridal makeup and i thought she did a very good job and had a chance to take a sneak peak into her makeup kit and saw a lot of high quality products from MAC, etc... happy to recommend her and share her details...

hi there! being a wedding planner myself, IMHO use a regular baker and not mention the word 'wedding' to them!! i usually use bakers such as Sugaholic and for a fondant cake, for example, a three tier cake would cost you around 750-800dhs... if you want it a bit more price competitive then try and go for a cake with buttercream icing instead (naked cakes are all the rage now!) that way the costs come down a bit

the most popular British ones are: Dubai College (Umm Suqieum) Dubai English Speaking College (Silicon Oasis) Jumeirah English Speaking School (Arabian Ranches) Jumeirah College (Jumeirah) All of them have entrance tests and waiting lists I'm sure but I guess it will also be subject to year of entry... yr 7 is often the most difficult to get into coz they have so many yr 6 primary school children applying!

Feel so much better @HorizonMum2. Thanks for the assurance. Xx I have been wondering, any idea why the tone in all their communication is so harsh? I find that they temd to deliberately scare parents compared to say Kings or most other British schools, who come across as having a more nurturing approach. From what you say and what Ive heard from other parents they aren't harsh with the kids. Do they deliberately like to come off this way? Happy to help in anyway i can Fav. We've been at the school for four years now and my nephew (who is now in university) also went to the same school! The school is actually quite lovely and they are absolutely brilliant with the children and it really is a very nurturing school - unfortunately their one main drawback is their communication mechanism. They try to be so careful in what they say that they tend to appear way more harsh than they intend... plus all the last few notices on the Communicator have been related to fees, transport or the uniform shop so definitely not the most pleasant issues to talk about! Are you part of the facebook group set up by fellow parents? If you are then that usually offers a lot of practical advice, info sharing opportunity, car pooling solutions, etc. Not sure if you work or not but the school welcomes parent helpers with open arms (especially in the earlier years) so if you have free time you can go in to help in your child's class, swim lessons, or even just go in to read to the class. It's so enriching and the children love to see their parents in class. Dads are welcome too! It is also a great way to be included in your child's learning and to see first hand how they grow and develop in a classroom scenario. Their standard & tone in their communication is possibly due to many reasons, a few of them I think are: - they don't have a communications specialist dedicated to uploading content for the website, communicator, etc. - they haven't invested in a user friendly website (although i must admit the new one they have now is MUCH better than its predecessor) - they focus much more on direct one on one communication between parents and occasionally between parent/teacher However, while this strategy might have worked excellently in the past due to a larger number of parents present in school and also because they were a much smaller school... now the dynamics have changed... more parents are working and hence fewer parents are hanging around in school all day... the number of children (and parents) have grown to almost double it's initial size and hence with all this change they do need to revisit their communication channels... let's hope that someone from the admin team is on this forum and reads this post

Sorry I have to disagree on this. Nespresso tastes very weak compared to proper coffee. Try a bean to cup machine, where you can adjust the settings to your own strength and taste the difference. We have a DeLonghi one with a milk frother and it also makes great lattes. Also there is a great make called Severin at Plug Ins which is next on my list if this one ever gives up the ghost. The Nespresso ones have a host of flavours so if u like ur coffee stronger u can just use a different pod! When you buy ur machine they give u starter pack with a lot of different flavours and u just work ur way through them till u find the one that hits ur caffeine quotient! :-)

Hi Fav, my younger DD is starting FS1 at Horizon Safa as well on Wednesday... please don't worry or be stressed about the toilet visits... my older child went through the same during her earlier years at Horizon and trust me our kids are MUCH more resilient and resourceful than we make them out to be. Yes, there may be a few accidents occasionally and the teachers and TAs are very patient with this (they even have spare clothes around for emergencies) but, trust me, very soon your DD will learn how to be a 'BIG GIRL' and manage the whole process herself... just trust her and the system! The first two weeks of school when they are only going in for two hours a day will help them learn the ropes and most of the 'learning at school' is actually about doing the most simple things such as: - learning to independently open snack boxes, juice packets, etc. - finding their way to the toilet - sorting books, shapes, etc. - learning to button up their clothes, velcro their shoes on, etc. So please don't worry too much... you've chosen an excellent school for your child and she will have lotssss of fun this year!

Hi OP, In spite of not originally being from the UAE, I’ve lived in Dubai all my life so this really is HOME for me… and I’m going to try and make you feel better about your time here… - Whereabouts do you live? I’m assuming with the amount of construction around you that you’re probably in newer parts of Dubai. The area around you is developing and very soon will have amazing infrastructure that will help you get around much easier! The whole life here is not built around malls… there’s lots of non-mall things to do. Yes, the days are hot… but the evenings are gorgeous and there are lots of free/cheap things to do in town:  Take an abra ride  Walk by the beach (there’s 7km of track for if you’d like to exercise of just walk)  Walk through the old souq area which is open air and always filled with curious finds  Visit the many museums in Sharjah (did you know that there are around 14… and the entrance fees are all under 10dhs!)  Visit the public library and go through the ‘English section’  Volunteer with programs such as Volunteer in Dubai which will get Take an abra ride  Walk by the beach (there’s 7km of track for if you’d like to exercise of just walk)  Walk through the old souq area which is open air and always filled with curious finds  Visit the many museums in Sharjah (did you know that there are around 14… and the entrance fees are all under 10dhs!)  Visit the public library and go through the ‘English section’  Volunteer with programs such as Volunteer in Dubai which will get you out and about and meeting people and all for a worthwhile cause - Being a developing country they will always be constructing something new or wonderful… which is great because that’s whats fueling the many jobs we expats have here… so for me personally I hope they never stop constructing! - I think the biggest reason why your husband was not eligible for a credit card could be because he hasn’t been in the country long enough… most banks would require at least a 3 month salary certificate/bank statement before being able to issue one… perhaps his colleague has been around longer? But yes, I agree that the professionalism and customer service levels in this country need lots of improvement. The government has now created many channels through which you can report back on your customer services feedback and more often than not you will get a favourable response! - Wow 18dhs a bottle you’ve obviously been eating at restaurants inside ‘hotels’ which have surcharges for everything. My suggestion would be to find more restaurants that are out of the hotel network! I’d love to suggest some if you let me know what sort of cuisines suit you fancy. Also, keep a look out for deals… get an Entertainer book for fine dining and BBOGOF offers… once you get your EmiratesNBD card you’ll be eligible to 20% discounts in many restaurants! - Clothes are expensive here if you compare the standard UK/US brands with locally available brands… you want cheaper priced clothes? Shop at the likes of Splash, Iconic, Max, etc. Or do what I do… go to the typical high street stores, try on the clothes and then buy the same clothes online from the parent store! Even with getting it couriered here still works out cheaper! Yes clothes made in GAP are mostly from Bangladesh… but it also means that you are paying for the designs being sent to Bangladesh, getting tailored there, then getting sent back to the US for packaging/marketing before it gets sent to country of sale (here)! - Rent, yes absolute madness! I have no idea when this whole culture of upfront payments started… to be honest while growing up here we always just paid upfront by cheque (but then I lived in accommodation that was only AED 9,000 for a whole year… sigh good old days!) The culture probably developed because most companies would pay for expat accommodation and it often came as a single payment? I’m not sure of this but just guessing! Anyway, it’s all part and parcel of being a rentee! - I think that feeling of ‘not belonging’ will soon pass once you make some friends. Start going to gym, expatwoman coffee mornings, craft classes or simply start socializing a bit more with people in your DH’s office… doesn’t have to be over a brunch sort of events… you could actually just invite people home for a home cooked simple meal… but trust me once you make friends you will ‘belong’! I’ve been here all my life and I know a lot of people here… every single person I know has grown in their careers and prospered… and also managed to save money. Some more than others (but probably because they lead more frugal lives). Why not try and use the location to your advantage. Being here you have access to visit some lovely places for really cheap – India? Sri Lanka? Maldives? Greece? Cyprus? Jordan? Far East? Eid holidays coming up… 5 whole days… plan a getaway!

SevenSeconds, don't panic... there are lots of activities that happen in Dubai for children that don't cost an arm and a leg... you just need to look around for them... some suggestions include the following: Al Nasr Leisureland in Oud Metha http://www.alnasrll.com/rates.php Swimming classes, for example, if a group session is as cheap as 50dhs per session They also offer karate, tennis, squash, ice skating, etc. Or the Body & Soul Health Club in Al Ghusais http://www.bodyandsoulhealthclub.com/ They also do swimming and other activities... they also have a promotion going on now for summer for membership for the whole family...

Hi, ladies, I need your advise: my DS turns 1 yo after 2 weeks and we want to invite some friends to celebrate it. Think this BD will be more for parents because he's still too small to remember. we plan to have 11 adults, 3 babies around 1 yo and 3 children (6-9 yo). Can you recommend any place where we can have lunch and children can have some fun? Thanks in advance how about THE FARM at Al Barari... kids can play outdoors in the gardens or then maybe a brunch? Beachcombers at Jumeirah Beach Hotel is a popular family brunch venue

ahhh okay... sorry to have misunderstood... with the packages it is best to check with the respective hospital as to what is covered and what isn't coz every hospital will have a different policy on their exclusions... most packages will not, for example, cover the following: - any antenatal admission prior to delivery - neo natal ICU - blood transfusions - newborn screening - epidurals - patient helper meals & stay - extended stay more than allocated to that type of delivery

actually a lot of it is subject to your insurance provider... some insurance companies cover many extras and some don't... for example, if you were to take any pain relief medication like epidural it would not be covered and that's usually around 2000... similarly, some cover basic number of days of stay (for normal it is often only 24hrs and if you walk into the hospital to be admitted before midnight then the day would start from the time of admittance)... whereas other insurance providers will cover your entire stay as long as the doctor deems it necessary... best to check with your insurance provider what is included and what isnt...

The Lime Tree Cafe catering is awesome!! They have nice canapes including mini rolls, sandwiches, mini quiches, salads, mini carrot cakes, mini burgers, etc..(Yummy) There is something for everyone. Also there food can be served room temperature so no cooker needed!!! yes they are nice for sure... but unfortunately it would not fit into the OP's budget of 24dhs per head...
