I have looked at the MKT, I thought it was ugly. Sorry its not a car I would buy. If you are looking for a 7 seater check out the new Nissan Pathfinder (its not gorgeous) but has so many features included for the price of 150k, its a 7 seater and the finishings are really nice. The Mazda CX9 I never looked at. Edited to add, the Nissan is a good value car - they buy them back at great prices. We did not get one but that was because my husband did not like how it looked - I love it however. Everyones different! edited by Ilovechoos on 26/05/2013

This is a weird question, but can you ban someone after you cancel their visa? Or do you have to do it when you cancel the visa? Also what would be wrong with just sending her home without the ban, just send her to Manila, and if she wants to come back to Dubai she can go through an agency or some other way? That way your not at all responsible for her and she can come back. I just feel a ban is pretty harsh.

If they found her through an agency, then the contract is 2 years although the visa renewal needs to be done annually. However, because she has already renewed with them once, that might not apply to her situation, edited by AnonDubai on 05/05/2013 Thanks Anon, she was originally an agency maid but that was 3 years ago, now she's direct with this family.

dont get involved. you are only hearing the maids side of the story. the 2 year contract applies to locals and not expats and if the maid is on a 2 year contract that she is obliged to complete it. Thanks for your reply, I did not really want to get involved but I have know about this for a few years. I don't want her stuck her with this family anymore!

The maid needs to first look at her copy of the contract. Thanks Sue, they won't show her the contract! It's so frustrating, poor girl is certain it says 1 year but they won't show it to her.

It would seem that the family is of UAE Nationality and if this is the case the contract is for a 2 year period and she has the right to place a ban if she does not complete the contract. Once a ban is in place there is no way of lifting the ban unless the sponsor agrees to it. With regret even the POLO office cannot assist. Thank you for your reply birchy! the family are European. Does this make a difference? She's worked so long for them and they just refuse to let her go. She is happy to work out her full contract but we suspect she's being tricked into another year. It's so terrible I just want to help her. edited by Ilovechoos on 05/05/2013

Hello, I was hoping somebody might be able to help with a problem we are having. One of the maids in our compound has been working for a family the last 4 years, after year 3 she told the Madam that it was her last year working for that family, the Madam agreed and promised to send her home. Now a year later the Madam is refusing and wants her to stay another year and that the maid signed a 2 year contract not a 1 year contract. She's so upset as this family treat her pretty badly, no phone, no time off, no day off, minimum pay, no holiday. We are worried now that if she insists on leaving the family the woman will make up a story like my maid stole something and ban her out of spite. Can anyone suggest any way to get this woman a new job or get her out of the country without being banned? Can she be forced to work another year for this woman? Thanks so much.

After meeting with 4 different surgeons my husband ended up having his surgery with Dr El _Shunnar at the American Hospital. He came recommended and we considered him as the best one to do the surgery he required (ruptured L2 - or something like that) - the surgery was successful and the whole process was excellent.

Lettie, there is a custom jeans store on Jumeira Beach road in Sunset Mall. You choose the denim, embellishments and they custom make exactly to your specs and size. It does take 6 weeks however. Hello, we had this exact problem last month. Its just crazy the size difference between the bed and the mattress. The PB delivery guy told me lots and lots of people return the mattresses as they fit so poorly. Like sadubai I used intercoil and ordered a custom made one. We found them excellent, and fast, the mattress is lovely too. We measured the inside of the bed and allowed 5cms or so for bedding, not 18cms like the pottery barn kids one.

I would put a huge "Beware of the Dog, Enter at Own Risk" sign, and just so there is no confusion put a photo of a nasty snarling dog next to it. That will probably cut down the number of people willing to ring your door bell.

"Agree there is nicer cheesecake to be had - but where. Limetree's is a bet "meh", anyone else find somewhere with great cheesecake? Preferably not mass produced like you get in Starbucks / Caribou etc..." TDB - In Dubai Mall at bloomingdales Magnolia has my favorite cheesecake - The Key Lime Cheesecake from Magnolia is far far nicer than the one at Cheesecake factory. They also do a lovely Vanilla Bean one and I think a snickers cheesecake.... I have found they taste far superior to cheesecake factory which I found to be a bit tasteless and rubbery - also Cheesecake factory ones I tried had a soggy base which for me is a deal breaker, I like a hard crispy sort of base on a cheesecake. :) edited by Ilovechoos on 04/09/2012

I just had quotes to do something similar, it could be anywhere from 12000Dhs up to 40000Dhs depending on the contractor and your scope of work. I thought Cygnet has closed down! I wanted to get a quote from them as I have used them before and they did good work, but nobody replied to emails and nobody answered the phone. Try The Big Fit Out, or Tech Pro they seem to be pretty good (although I have not used either of them yet) and of course Cygnet if they are still working! edited by Ilovechoos on 19/08/2012

I spoke to the lady in charge to see if I can get his little brother on board (TCG and JBS are only one street apart) but she said that the service must have a contract with the school." TCG and JBS are not 1 street apart, they are dozens of streets and a 5-10 min car journey apart. Not at all possible for a little boy to walk from JBS to TCG. Check the classifieds here for a driver, good luck.

Frazzeled check out www.readingeggs.com its an Australian reading program that is amazing. You work online with puzzles and games, and its for all levels of readers - its actually fun and my 5 year old now does it on his own I just set it up and let him go through each lesson. You will get reports after each stage is completed outlining all the words known and progress. I think its pretty amazing. The first 15 days are free after that its paid for but I am so thrilled with it. Good luck!

You poor thing, my husband had the exact same problem and its just so painful. Dr El Shunnar at the American Hospital was the surgeon who operated on my husband, we chose him after meeting with 4 other surgeons and a great recommendation from a friend of mine. My husband is almost fully recovered and pain free. Dr El Shunnar is based at the American Hospital and we could not have been happier with the treatment there. As for the help at home, yes its possible. Give a few maid agencys a call, some are actually licensed to babysit as well as clean so all totally legal. I hope you feel better soon!

I agree with Pamya. As a wife who has been given heaps of gifts like this from my husbands work I can tell you please dont go the cheap tat route. A box and a nice ribbon alone will cost you at least 15dhs out of your 100dhs leaving 85 for a gift. I dont want someone else buying my cosmetics, perfume or skincare, clothing or anything personal. How about movie tickets, or a gift voucher to an afternoon tea at a hotel? How about a donation to a charity like Keva.org or some charity related to your work field? World food program? A bottle of wine (or grape juice) if appropriate? ..... sorry I have strong opinions on this but DH has bought home yet another watch hes been given from a client, I just think what a waste, could they not do something meaningful? or fun?, or good for charity? edited by Ilovechoos on 25/11/2011 Edited to add more ideas: What about a restaurant voucher (lime tree) with a note attached saying "Bon appetite" or if your office loves coffee maybe some Costa/starbucks Vouchers inside a coffee cup, or a voucher for the business lunch at Okku - its only 89dhs and its fabulous (although I dont know if you can buy gift vouchers for Okku). Carrefour vouchers? edited by Ilovechoos on 25/11/2011

Oh wow its happened to other people! I used this company 2 years ago to rent a car for 1 week. They "by accident" charged my credit card for a full months rental. I tried for 6 months to get the difference back, either in cash or refunded to my credit card and it never happened. They messed me around so much, telling me to come on a Friday at 10 to pick up a cheque and it would be closed, or nobody knew what I was talking about when I would call accounts despite speaking to them the day prior, saying they would call me back and never did, saying its been credited and it never happened. They are hands down the worst company I have ever dealt with in Dubai (and thats saying something). I never got my money back, I decided the stress of dealing with those people was not worth the 1200 dhs they owed me. When I was in their offices there was always angry customers in their dealing with their inept staff. Avoid at all costs!! Sorry edited to add that I hope you get your money back and find this company. Good luck. edited by Ilovechoos on 12/11/2011

This happened with me and I think you need to use a really good, fresh razor. I was using the one that had been in my shower for months and finally I realised it was blunt and not doing what it should and causing it ingrown hairs and itchy skin. Now I use a new one very regularly and I have no more problem, just remember to moisturize after shaving and you should be fine.

You can buy the Nestle ones from The Organic Supermarket in the greens - they have a South African section and its stocked there despite it not being organic. I bought one because I was curious if it really tasted like a boiled can of condensed milk - it does and its delicious. I did see one time on BBC food a chef pour the condensed milk into a frying pan and boil it for about 10 mins whilst stiring and he promised it tasted just like the boiled can method. I dont know, but I sort of want to try. :)

Yes, you can buy them in the furniture section of Bloomingdales - they have a new furniture collection which is a very modern Morrocan style... they are fabulous. From memory they had pink and silver and turquoise - I think. Sorry I dont remember the price! O'd Rose (not sure if that is how its spelt) opposite the Choithrams in Umm Sequim on Al Wasel road also has one or two. I think it was silver. They also have a concession at Galleries Lafayette. The best I have ever seen is Serena and Lily, my sister has the pink one and its divine. I was looking at shop and shipping it but its way too heavy. http://www.serenaandlily.com/Furnishings/Furnishings-Pouf I love a good pouf! :)

Almost all retail companies here have a van and a driver for moving stock between shops and moving employees around. Demand that they put the key in the van and deliver it to you. Its not your fault, and I dont think you should have to go back. If they say AR is too far (which it might be) maybe you could come to a compromise, like your or your husbands office. I dont lock my suitcases either, I have never had anything taken. I do quite often wrap them up in plastic at the airport when I arrive. But anyway its not about locking or not, its about the OP not getting what she paid for.

Spinneys Umm Sequim sell fresh coconuts (only since the last month) and they are with the fresh cut watermelon and pommegranite seeds at the end of an aisle. Hack into one of these and use the water. I have coconut water every morning in my smoothies and I love them. To choose a good fresh coconut shake it, and if you cant hear the water sloshing about its full and young. Smell the water once you open the coconut and check that it does not smell of vinegar. If it smells like vinegar chuck it out, its not good! Great choice to use coconut water, its delicious and good for you! I have found that the canned coconut juice in Dubai is full of sugar and not particularly tasty. I will use it in an emergency if I cant get fresh one but the best is fresh. edited by Ilovechoos on 05/08/2011
