these double pumps were designed by men, werent they?! i look like a contortionist when using my double pump. i am back at work too and still use my medela swing. i also dont have a problem with supply, so pumping from both breasts with the swing only takes 30mins now. i pump twice at work and feed as much as possible at home to keep my supply up. hi laydeelay, i returned to work in june and during my first week back the volume of milk i got with pumping at the office was terrifying. i realised that it had to do with the environment (at home i was more relaxed, had DS with me, no distractions and lets face it - you're very conscious of pumping at work). i also had a good stash in the freezer which helped but i had to do something. i made sure i had pictures, or even video clips, of DS on my phone to look at whilst pumping. i watched the clock and 15mins or so before i was due to pump i started winding down, getting into pumping-mode. i also have the medela swing and it felt like pumping took forever. i bought a double pump but it was SO noisy that i thought everyone could hear me - another bad pumping day - so i went back to my swing. i added 2 pumping sessions at home, after DS went to bed at night, to stimulate my supply and build up the freezer stash. that helped a lot! before i knew it, my mind was at ease, my body was relaxed and i was overall so used to pumping at work that the volume increased dramatically. even with the swing, it only takes 30mins max to pump from both breasts now. DS will be 8 months next week and i've been pumping (successfully) at work since june. breastfeed at any and every opportunity you get and only give a bottle when really necessary. relax, take your time and good luck! HTH

You can save a bomb by just taking your kids to the govt clinics who offer all the vaccinations for free! Just get them a Govt health card by registering them (go to the www.dha.gov.ae for guidance or call 800 342)..they will then assign you a clinic to visit according to which area you live in..you can then make an appt and take your kid there. I took my son for his 4 month vaccinations at mamzar clinic..perfectly lovely..modern and clean...nice nurse..no rush at all..and best of al - FREE! Thank goodness - at least SOMETHING is free in this country :) Just to add, you need to have a residence visa to get a govt health card edited by Ayda247 on 21/08/2012 i went to latifa hospital, paid dhs.100 for ds and dhs.300 for me (thought, why not?) and they assigned a clinic for us - satwa, behind the co-op. all ds's vaccinations have been free, except for the rota virus which i had done privately, and even those werent expensive. it was very easy as ayda247 says and definitely worth it. good luck!

WOW! what a walk down memory lane reading this old thread is! i actually got a bit teary-eyed. just a quick update: DS is 7 months old now and is still EBF. i am back at work, pump twice a day and have a fantastic stash in the freezer - it's all good. we've introduced solids (BLW) but DS still hasnt dropped a feed. breastfeeding is fantastic and i dread the day that it'll stop. DH and I are still amazed at how easy breastfeeding is now. DS latches wherever, whenever, even plays whilst feeding. it is the most amazing thing i've ever done, and will probably ever do. i want to thank all of you on this thread - and other threads - for your advice, support and encouragement. without you, a wonderful LC and DH's support I would for sure have given up when the going got tough. and boy did it get tough! special shout to plumie - those midnight texts were invaluable xxx

hi dangerous blonde, i gave birth to my DS in january. it never crossed my mind to stay at home. i would take my maternity leave and go back to work. my company gives 3 months and i negotiated 2 extra which meant that i was at home with DS for 5 months. some time during my maternity leave i changed my mind and DH agreed that i could stay at home. i went back to work with the idea of working for a month, then resign. i changed my mind again! sure i missed DS in the beginning (i still do) but he started nursery school, is stimulated much better than i would ever be able to (comes home with all sorts of goodies and artwork etc), covered in glitter and smiles from ear-to-ear in the morning when i drop him off. we moved his bath-time to later and spend quality time with him in the evenings and over weekends. DS will be an only child, so at nursery he makes friends, learns to share and the staff there are truly amazing. i am lucky though that i work for a great company, and have a terrific manager. we have flexi hours, work from home facilities and they are generally very supportive of mothers (work/life balance thing and all that). i'm expressing at work and am still working breastfeeding hours in accordance with the labour law. it makes a huge difference. i genuinely feel i have the best of both worlds. DS is looked after and cared for by great people at a fantastic nursery (they have CCTV in the classroom so I log in during the day to have a sneaky peek), keep my independence and earn money (to add to the pot which is ultimately there for DS, isnt it?). we will look into the maid situation when DS is 3 and goes to 'big school'. i know others may not agree, but that's their perogative. you know your company, would they be amenable to flexi hours / extended maternity leave / any other arrangement? you never know until you try. i wanted to negotiate a 4 day work week (and probably would've gotten it) but i just got promoted so i thought that would be a bit cheeky. start off by negotiating extended maternity leave and take it from there. do what makes you happy. good luck and congratulations on your bundle of joy!

hi sparkly, we've been doing BLW for a month now and mealtimes are such fun. it is messy, true, but to see how DS is enjoying his meals and exploring with food makes up for all of it. (our dog circles DS's highchair like a vulture LOL) the best advice i can give you is to buy/read gill rapley's book on BLW. i bought the cookbook too and the recipes are amazing. i got the book from the japanese bookstore in dubai mall. http://www.rapleyweaning.com/ i have joined the dubai facebook group - run by TanyaR on his forum - but it is a bit slow. the mothers in that group seem to be done with BLW but i'm sure they'll have second (or third) babies when the group will pick up again. TanyaR responds to messages though. [email protected] i have also joined the UK facebook group. there's a lot of traffic on there and the ladies are super helpful. there are newbies as well as experienced mums. i get loads of info from there and we also share recipes. http://www.facebook.com/#!/groups/263150313632/ (not sure if this is the correct link!) i also participate on the BLW forum. this is the most amazing forum and you join in whenever, wherever appropriate. loads of ideas and tips on there, friendly mums who are going through exactly the same thing at exactly the same time as you (month appropriate threads). fears of gagging/choking are discussed, how to deal with people/family not approving of the BLW way, as well as, very importantly, "mix of BLW and puree" (pre-loaded spoon put down on highchair is ok, pre-loaded spoon feeding child not BLW way). http://www.babyledweaning.com/forum/ as you can see, i'm totally into this BLW thing. DH was sceptical about it but now that we're into it, he is the first one to suggest a meal for DS. DS is 7 months now and has had p*rk ribs, rump steak, risolles, spagbol, beetroot, brown rice, steamed vegetables, rice cakes (everything whole, nothing mashed/pureed) and the list is endless. and the photos and videos are priceless! good luck and enjoy BLW - it's fantastic!

No one is advocating boob tubes and hot pants, we are talking sleeveless tops, and skirts/shorts which fall slightly above the knee. To start off with, there are no laws regarding this, just guidelines issued by some authorities which don't carry the same weight - if this isn't an offence punishable by law, obviously some people will conclude that it isn't that big of a deal. And given the many confusing laws that do exist here, it is a pretty reasonable conclusion. I've lived through Melbourne summers which are notoriously hot, and it still doesn't compare to Dubai's humid outdoor saunas. Yesterday I walked from one end of JBR to the other, 20 minutes later I was drenched with sweat with my clothes sticking to the skin. It takes discomfort to a whole other level. So sue me, I do go out with sleeveless tops, and some of my dresses and shorts don't fall below my knee. I carry a shawl in my bag for emergencies and put it on when I'm going indoors where there is A/C. And you know what? There is a huge difference between wearing sleeveless vs sleeved tops. The latter causes sweat to accumulate in the armpits, leaves sweat patches, and frankly looks even worse because it makes the clothing stick to the skin. Constrast that with a breezy sleeveless top which allows sweat to evaporate. And with regards to my knees, I am a size 0/2, and petite, which means that unless I buy maxi dresses/skirts (which are always too long for me), clothes that fit usually fall above my knees by an inch. Ultimately Dubai has to decide what it wants to be, a dream beach/tourist destination, or one that abides by its religious code, but it cannot be both. good post!

can you remain anonymous when reporting your company as per the article? has anyone ever tried? we get an email stating that "in accordance with local labor laws, the official working hours for the business will be 6 hrs a day" plus "However, we are still required to meet all our deadlines ... so please discuss with your managers ..." some work normal hours, some leave after 6 hours without anyone batting an eyelid. we are lucky i suppose.

CitronKB, upper level, behind Costa at the Food Court (South). Opposite the Nike store. There are 4 or 5 individual feeding rooms each with a changing station and a solid door you can close for privacy. Or you can feed outside in the general area. There is a little play area to keep your other little one busy (if you have another one). There are wipes, warm water, basins and even a microwave! A large and very nice area for mothers.

In all my years here i have never seen anyone nurse in public Are there not mother/baby rooms in the malls etc for this? maybe you haven't [i'>[/i'>noticed[i'>[/i'> a woman nursing her baby in public but believe me it's happening everywhere, as for mother/baby rooms, it's no fun to sit in them for 30-40 mins which is how long it can take in the early days, there is no need to hide away, it's perfectly acceptable to nurse in public and you do not need to cover yourself in a blanket. I've never used a cover in 19 months how do you do it without a cover mogindubai? i'm keen to know. i still fumble with a cover and DS's grubby little paws are pulling at it all the time so DH has to be ready to help at all times! if there's an easy way, i'm happy to get some tips from you! (no amount of youtube watching has made it 'easier' iykwim) thanks!

I would imagine that it is a big no no to nursing in public with a culture so strong in respect and modesty. In more liberal countries it would not be a problem but I really don't think it is a good idea at all over here. In all my years here i have never seen anyone nurse in public Are there not mother/baby rooms in the malls etc for this? i breastfeed in public all the time! i have a cover to put over DS and no one (not even arab ladies/men) have complained. people are very supportive here. malls have mothers' rooms etc (the best one is definitely in mirdif city centre) but starbucks, costa etc are all very accommodating. if all else fails, shop assistants are extremely friendly and helpful and i've used fitting rooms many times if i couldnt find a coffee shop / mothers' room at DS's feeding time. i dont eat my lunch in the toilet, neither will my son.

I had 2 things in my mind that I would not budge on (1) natural delivery and (2) breastfeeding. The closer I got to DS's due date, the more anxious I became and the more realistic I had to be about things. (I was on medication too that had to be taken into consideration.) At my last appointment I told my doctor that of course natural is my first choice but if she sees, at any time during the labour process, that DS is in trouble, she is to cut me anyway and anyhow - DS takes priority over any preference that I may have. Thank goodness everything worked out well, and I did have a natural birth (with epidural) and it was the most amazing experience ever. The epidural was strong enough just to "take the edge off" and allow me to focus on giving birth. I tore and had 5 stitches. Not the end of the world and there's medication for that. It also healed nicely. I'm thankful everyday that I was able to experience natural birth.

Well, DS went 1.15mins OVER his nap today because MIL insisted he wasnt ready for bed. He was crying he was so tired and i was crying inside. DH is so going to hear about it tonight LOL Why am i such a whimp at taking DS to his room with a firm "it is time for his nap" with these people? Anyway, thanks tweet, it's good to know you have the same routine with the same/similar issues. I'll see how we get on. PlainJane, thanks also to you. I will stretch his awake times and see what it does to his naps. And you are right, easier said than done. Thing is, i really love my in-laws, they are fabulous people. I keep an eye out for tired ques but when, after 2 hrs, i still havent seen any, im scared i may have missed them. I will keep a closer eye today and see how it goes. Kiwispiers, he doesnt catnap at all! By shortening his morning nap, do you mean i shoul wake him? Im always very happy when he has a long morning nap considering he doesnt sleep much in the afternoon. We started bath time at 5pm yesterday because he was so tired. This morning 4am DS is awake and smiling, ready for the day LOL not sure if that had anything to do with it. I love my in-laws (who are here at the moment), they are great and im sure they mean well, but i feel the pressure with their comments "i've never known a baby who fights sleep like this" or "X grandchild fell asleep the minute you put him down". Thanks ladies, i'll try and try and try again x

Thanks PlainJane but DS's awake time runs from when he wakes up to when he sleeps. So in other words at 3.30pm he has been awake for 2hrs having woken up at 1.30pm. If I kept him up until 4pm, it would be too long.

Thanks again. DS is on a 4hrly feeding routine at the moment, i.e 7am, 11am, 3pm then bath-routine which is feed (6pm), bath and feed (6.30pm) and bed. He stirs at around 10pm when DH shhhh's him back to sleep, wakes at midnight or later when I feed him, then wakes again at 5am for another feed and up for the day at 7am. I plan on feeding him at 7am, express at 10am and again at 1pm and then be home in time for a 3.30/4pm feed (mum would only give him a little bit at 3pm to hold him over until I get home). So you suggest I express at 9pm (ish) again? I have quite a bit of frozen milk in the freezer. Just after DS's birth I was expressing every day, so I have milk from mid-January, February, a little bit for March, none for April and then some for May. I really dont want to waste liquid gold hence my question ... If I express today, would it be sufficient for tomorrow's feeds and so on and so on. We can defrost frozen milk in the fridge for 'in case' mum needs to top up on whatever I expressed yesterday, right? But if I keep expressing now (prior to returning to work) on top of the frozen supply that I already have PLUS expressing every day at the office, isnt that overkill? How much I pump depends on when I pump, right? And I'm confused about that too. (DS only takes one breast per feed. When I offer him the second breast he takes it but he always spits everything back up. His weight gain in good and Cecile agrees that as long as he is gaining, is happy and is obviously not hungry (which he isnt) then one breast per feed is good enough.) So, what I do is feed him, and within the following hour I express from the 'empty' breast approx 30mls in 10mins, and 50mls from the 'full' breast - also in 10mins. So that's 80mls. But I'm thinking if I express at work, after 3hrs of a feed, then I should be able (theoretically) to get at least 50mls per breast, or am I wrong? How long after a feed should I express to get optimum amount of milk? I'm aiming to brestfeed for as long as possible so I need to get it right. TIA

I'm going back to work soon (family's coming over to look after DS). I'll express so that they can give him 2 bottles during the day. DS is 4.5 months old. 1) How much would I need per feed (mls)? Obviously being breastfed I dont know how much he drinks. Is there a formula of calculating an estimate of how many mls per feed he would need? 2) I would feed him at 7am then express at 10am and again at 1pm then be home in time for his 4pm feed. Am I correct to assume that the 10am expressed milk will cover the next day's 10am feed (and the same with the 1pm feed)? Or do I have to have more milk than what I've expressed the day before? I have a supply in the freezer but I'm not expressing at the moment. I'll start expressing again this week to add thereto. I'm a bit confused as to whether what I express today will be sufficient for tomorrow's feeds.

Hi Feefmick! The complex you are referring to is definitely Diamond Views. It's an apartment complex, pool in the centre, with villas on the outside. Last i checked they werent near completion. We have friends who bought there and they've been waiting for handover for AGES. I can take a drive there this afternoon and have a look at the progress for you - will come back and let you know. There arent any general JVC pools yet. There are other apartment blocks, i.e, Damac (Lavendar & Rose buildings) and some others at the other end, the names of which i dont know. I know the Damac buildings have pools on the roof. Check out this website, you can search all the buildings there. http://www.jumeriahvillage.com/jumeirah-village-dubai-project/Jumeirah-Village-South/Diamond-Views-1-804.html We didnt get our townhouse through an agent. We drove around JVC, many properties have telephone numbers displayed on their gates/windows. We managed to contact the owner directly that way. Saves on agency fees etc. And yes, the Emirates Rd / Al Khail connection has re-opened. HTH - good luck with your move!

We're in one of the Mirabella townhouses. I know Diamond Views are the same as ours and there's another complex that has JUST been completed by i dont know the name of it. I've just had a look at google. Enter "mirabella jumeirah village south" and click on images. You"ll see piccies and floorplans there. Go to this link and click on Diamond View Townhouses, they have slideshows of what they look like. http://www.bayut.com/dubai_jumeirah_village_south_property/townhouses-rent-5416-1.html The above link also has piccies of Mirabella but they are definitely not the same as the one that we are in. There are 7 or 8 Mirabella buildings. HTH

We are in JVC. Very big 3 bedroom on 3 levels, massive terrace and nice size garden. The maids room is in the basement and very big too, in terms of Dubai standards. DH turned it into his man-cave LOL. Lounge downstairs, family room upstairs leading out to terrace. Yes it looks like a building site but all our neighbours have done up their properties and gardens that we dont even notice it. They (and us) take pride in their townhouses and it makes a world of difference. We have many children on our block and they have all become friends, playing well into the night over weekends - taking turns either in someone's garden or in the sites across the road (whats better than lots of sand, toy cars, water and naughty friends?) ;) Anyway, when we moved in the roads were horrendous and it took us at least 10 minutes to get to our home. Now they have fixed so many roads, the perimeter (or ring?) road is also completed so whether we take gate 8 or 10, its straight all the way and takes us less than 5 minutes. Gate 6 (access directly from the D611 bridge) is open but only for construction vehicles at the moment. We have all signed letters addressed by our managing agents to RTA and Nakheel requesting access for residents too. The verdict is out on that one. Our rent is ridiculously cheap. We are close to MotorCity, MOE and Arabian Ranches. Emirates Rd is behind us, Al Khail on the other side, the D611 bridge takes us into Tecom and SZR - pretty easy.
