Thank you. I just read on kellymum re: what breasts feel like and im at ease. My son feeds well so im not going to worry about it any more. My LC suggested i feed 15min per side but it doesnt work for us, so what i've been doing is a breast per feed - LC said thats fine too. Ds has never indicated that he wants more, except the odd occasion where he then takes 5mins on the second breast and is off to lala land. Ive worked on the premise that 15mins and more is a 'full feed' and anything less is only a 'top up' and, i will start on that breast at the next feed. R Ds definitely prefers left breast over right. He latches well but its more painful and he spends less time at R breast. I got really good advice from plumie the other day about changing positions etc so ive been doing that. Thanks again kiwispiers x

1. How long at a breast constitutes a full feed? Im confused as ds spends 25-30mins on the L breast, and at the next feed only 15mins on the R breast. My question, at the next feed, do i start at that breast (R) or do i start with the L breast as 15mins on the R breast was a full feed? 2. How does a breast feel when its empty? Like it did before your milk came in, pre-pregnancy? I express regularly but lately it only takes my ds a 5min sucking before my breast feels flabby and 'normal'. Im scared im running out of milk! I used to feel full at all times and when i woke this morning at 5am my breast felt empty so i fed ds and then expressed. However, at his most recent feed he was on the breast for 5mins and it felt empty. Can this be or is this how your breasts start to feel after a while? Tia

Thanks ladies. My son is 3 weeks old. I have been expressing and usually get between 75ml to 100ml per breast, i suppose im lucky? Im ok with defrosting the milk at home, i was wondering how to go about it when out and about. However, kiwispiers, i suppose you are right, i can always try to feed in a changing room. I just dont want to do it in a public toilet! I havent tried bottle feeding before, no.

Thanks to all you wonderful ladies. Perhaps i just needed some reassurance that im not a total idiot with what im doing. And im glad to hear that it is too soon to spoil ds. Both feeds last night went well. After the burping i held ds close to my chest where he fell asleep. Is that so wrong? I have decided to go through this month first before worrying about routines or schedules or whatever. Im enjoying my time with ds and do not want to spoil it with worrying over too much too soon. Thanks for the link kiwispiers, very interesting reading. My LC also told me to open the blinds during daytime so ds can distinguish between night and day and so thats what ive been doing and he's sleeping fine. I think i have a lot of undue pressure on me. My mum, bless her i love her too bits, is still very old school. Not believing in 3hr feeds but letting baby sleep for as long as he wants. She also doesnt get that we want some kind of a routine in place. We have friends who have a seemingly perfect baby. She sleeps as if on cue, its something to see!, and i feel them looking at us, watching our every move to see how we are going to raise ds. I feel as if i HAVE to reach the bar set by them otherwise whatever i do isnt going to be good enough. I cant do the cry it out method, thanks for confirming that its too soon anyway, so will let ds fall asleep on his own with pating etc or on my shoulder for the time being. I love the closeness and i hate hearing ds scream. I some times want to bring him downstairs just to be with him some more, perhaps keep him close to me whilst having a cup of tea but i am afraid of disturbing the little bit of structure that we've got going. Im curious though, how do i do naked, air-dry, tummy time with ds's little rocket launcher firing off at any time? LOL Thanks again xxx

I have excellent news. Since my last post we have only had successful latches, no shields at all! My LC expxlained it to me in a mailbox scenario i.e. a mailbox looks like this - and you mail a letter through that slit as - you can try to stick the envelope through by turning it .. l ... it'll go through but it'll be damaged. So, if ds is facing my boob and depending on the position im holding him in, if his mouth is - then i should pinch my n1pple into the - shape. If he is facing me and his lips are in the l shape then i pinch my n1pples into the l shape. Does that make sense? Anyway, it did to me and helped me so much. Ds is feeding like a champ and i no longer suffer from cracked and bleeding n1pples.

May i ask a question? I know the op's baby is 3months old compared to my 1week old, but ds sleeps 2.5hrs to 3hrs max, around the clock. And feeds every time he wakes. Am i facing the same problem? Or is this ok for his age? Im so scared of forming the wrong sleep associations but feeding ds at this stage is paramount to anything else. So much to learn with this baby malarkey!

Thank you bluecamel x LC was here and yup its indeed my n1pples that are the problem. Sweetlily, your advice is spon on, LC told me to express a bit before feeding to try to get n1pples out, also showed me a great massaging technique that im going to try. Ice on n1pples for a second before feeding too. DS doesnt have tongue tie but good news, he's been gaining weight! LC was super and im so glad she came out. She's very impressed with his progress, his poop is the right colour etc and we seem to be doing alright all things considered. I havent tried bathing with him because of my stitches, dont want to be in water for too long except when doing the salt water thing. Ive been shown other breastfeeding positions whcih i'll give a try. All in all a great experience. She answered all our questions. She'll be back next week to monitor our progress. I'll try straight from the breast at each feed (except late nights when im tired as LC said that would be too frustrating) and only when i really CANT get it right will i switch to the shield. One thing that makes me feel better is that the LC confirmed, shield is not the best but if there's no other way, it is still better than nothing at all.

Thank you all for your great comments and advice. I am reading all your posts but cannot necessarily reply, you know how it goes ... But im not ignoring you! Like i said in another thread, i have flat n1pples and that makes things difficult too. In hospital i was using the medela shields and that seemed to help. One of the nurses, however, said i should go off them before ds gets used to the plastic shield. As a result i've been ditching them and thats caused many problems, painful breasts and PLENTY tears. I used the shield again last night and ds fed so well, was so happy and burping was a breeze. The breastfeeding time increased, i was relaxed, ds was relaxed and it was again an amazing experience. The difference was unbelievable. I have decided to stay on the shields for the time being. Without it i am definitely running the risk of giving up because its so painful. I figure its about the benefit of breastmilk, that special time with my son and giving him as much nutrition - quantity and quality - rather than puttitng us both through ****. I hope i dont get bashed for this on here, but for the time being its the best for me and my son. All the mums in dr jack newman's clips have super n1pples (now there's something i thought id never say!) LOL and i dont have that. There's some really good advice, tips etc on latching out there but my n1pples are just not right. I havent heard back from the lactation consultants that i've contacted, so until further notice the shield is the way forward. Thanks again to everyone, you are all fantastic and i really appreciate all your help/advice. Xxx Ps: apologies for any errors/sp mistakes!

We have the 2011 pajero and it does have isofix. However, its european fit (or is it american?) cant remember which now, so instead of the isofix latch being between the back-rest and seat, its positioned at the back, under the seat (you have to climb in from the back and dig your hands into/under the seats to find it) so completely useless to us living here. We bought a mamas & papas carseat with an easybase instead. The guys from m&ps were great in installing it, its secure and super easy to operate. My dh's car has the proper isofix latch, so we bought the base for his car. Hth

i wont recommend you go there. go to dr george at 9 medical centre or dr ulrich at welcare. i know dr mirza is supposed to be "the best in the business" (whatever that means) but i have my own, as well as many friends', horror stories about being tested there. and it has nothing to do with his bed-side manner. good luck x

my phone calls, texts etc come to about dhs.300 per month - MAX. yet, i get texts from etisalat to pay my bill of well over 1,000. i've been paying this for 2 months (stupid, i know) but then it struck me ... is blackberry the same as iphone in that you have to turn off / disable some functions? i have disabled wi-fi etc but can i do something about apps (which i dont use). i woke up this morning with a notification that twitter wants to upgrade, i dont use twitter. when i click on app world, there's always something running but i dont know what. so i stop it. i've never downloaded from youtube. my facebook is bog standard and hardly ever on (only when travelling). or is it as simple as going to etisalat and querying my bills? i'm slightly confused and would appreciate any suggestions. TIA

we were walking our dog the other night and slipped into unfinished villas for a sneaky peak - i think they're called diamond views or something - it was a 5 bedroomed villa, 3 storeys. rooms were very small though and they had shared bathrooms. the private garden areas of the corner units are massive. looks nice though. i know the damac apartments have pools on the roof and (i think) al sobha tower has a pool but the rest of the development dont. hi tulipano, our baby # 1 on his way. DH wasnt comfortable with the drop-rail system as most of them in dubai seemed a bit flimsy. friends of ours' little girl (11 months now) sits in her cot bed and bangs on the rails - he used that as an example and said if that was a cot and baby uses enough force, or the little clips get worn out from all the banging, there's a definite chance of the rail letting go at some stage. we bought a cot bed. for the above reason as well as being able to use it as a junior bed lateron. we scouted dubizzle and saw how many people are getting rid of cots, so thought we'd be 'economical' and have one bed up until 5yrs. oh i disagree with nimonemo (in my opinion, of course). i found our antenatal classes extremely informative and helpful. i did mine at city hospital. there are so many old wives tales and stories from a friend's friend's mother's sister and when discussed at an antenatal class, it's amazing how the midwives and/or nurses respond thereto. i printed things off the internet so that i could ask questions on it, and again, these extremely well-trained professionals with many, many years of experience were able to advise us properly. (i was amazed at how many of us had the same questions coming from very similar sources, i.e. friends/internet/books.) we had doctors attend classes so as to explain things in more detail. and the resident anaesthetist spent an entire evening on pain relief, particularly epidural (the administration thereof, the history behind it, showing us how, when and where it's done) completely alleviating any fears that i may have had. we were also handed out 'course material' for extra reading and were given telephone numbers of help-lines, lactation consultants etc. doing an antenatal class at the hospital or clinic that you intend on giving birth has the added advantage of you getting to know the nurses, midwives and certain of the doctors that would roam the halls. PLUS you meet women who are in the same boat as you, and some of them will be in the hospital at the same time as you. great for 'hospital buddies' and exchanging information, ideas and just general chit-chat. i love my friends, and they are fantastic, but none of them have children, so i found the camaraderie amongst the women in my antenatal class invalueable. x

cakes, nt scan takes 30mins or so. have you considered going elsewhere for this scan? dr ulrich at welcare does them and so does dr george. i will not elaborate on a public forum, but fmc has a lot of false outcomes. their machine measures the nuchal fold instead of a technician meticulously measuring the area behind your baby's neck. i have personally had the worst experience with them and have refused to go back to them for anything further. good luck with the scan x
