As a half Austrian and half Pakistani I know where you are coming from but honestly you dont have to worry. The Austrians will be delighted with a "Strauss" a bouquet of flowers and chocolates. The Austrians are actually quite a fussy lot and dont much like "Firdlefanss" baubles etc that dont fit into their decor etc. If you feel you have to give something then maybe on the second (day) visit you can bring something that matches their decor or personality. That said, my father took a real Pashmina for my grandmother when he went to visit the first time. But then again they were already married and it was the 50's

LMAO-DXB -Dont worry about going to Pakistan. It is a beautiful country with beautiful people and they will do their best to make you feel comfortable. Guests are considered a gift of Allah and the hospitality legendary. You as a foreigner will be a novelty so be prepared for a fan club as well. Specially the children. My husband was just as scared (despite being a Pakistani) he had only been there once when he was a child. He has grown up in the States. I joked with him that there were no bathrooms in the homes one still had to go outside.....:)... he could not sleep for a week before leaving. When he got there, met the people and enjoyed the food (Food is a BIG thing in Lahore) he loved it so much we moved back for 5 years. Unfortunately due to economic reasons we left. I know of many foreigners who have actually stayed in Pakistan to live their life out (ok we were living in Karachi and dont know much about Lahore but I dont see it being much different)...anyway, Go with an open mind. you might be surprised. Mrsb, I just wanted to thank you for loving my Pak Sar Zameen. It sincerely brought tears to my eyes.

Yes, this sounds like AL Mulla Plaza, which also has a mall and is right next to (or at least very close to) the football stadium. I am sorry but cant help with the youth hostel thought. Did not know they had one here. But then when one thinks about the stadium that might be possible. Maybe you can go to the stadium and ask about a hostel close by. However, Al Mulla is in Dubai but on the border to Sharjah edited by janatks on 24/11/2013

I had mine last monday. I just got a call from the nurse to come tomorrow as the Dr wants to do it again with him being present. When I had it on Monday the technician was checking to see if it was a clean shot and she took a double take when she saw my left armpit. Started poking and asking if it hurt. Has for a while.....anyway, question is ...is this normal? if not does insurance pay for anything that needs to be done? I use Alliance .....me scared

I am sorry I dont have a little one in the DISD but had one in DISS which was an amazing school with lovely teachers. However, if you plan on living here for more than a couple of years I would not suggest you put your little one in a German School. MY DD was going to the Kindergaten in DISD but because the schooling system does not do much with them until they turn 6 she did not even start learning any of the 3 r's which would have been ok if we were going back or were living in Germany/Austria etc but being here she was extremely frustrated that she did not have the same skills as her friends and siblings (who went to an English school) My husband was not happy because she would cry that she cant do things e.g. colouring within the lines, writing her name , identifying numbers/alphabets etc....the German system is excellent ...for Germany

As it was my second marriage I had a good idea of what and what I didn't want in my life and ensured that I found out as much as I could before hand. I included quite a few items in our Nikah much to his family's amusement/shock. Luckily, as a foreigner, I was already considered an "outsider" so my demands were overlooked as "well, she is a foreigner". I would really like to know what you included in your Nikkah. I included the right to Divorce and had a big row with my brother-in-law who thought it was inappropriate. Thank God I did because I was able to exercise the right when it got unbearable. I had only heard about this possibility by chance a few months before the wedding. Usually the Nikahnama's have a line going through the womens rights

Why would you want to place your child in a school that is not academically good? That is what school is for! She can learn religion from family members or at the mosque. Those little brat are not going to change as they think they are better than her as she is from a mixed background. Sounds like she would be better off at an international school. I did a lot of research before I admitted her and all the feedback I got was glowing. I met with the teachers in May and was delighted as most were from the UK or the US with years of experience. BUT like I said the whole admin/faculty changed this semester. There is not ONE westerner left in the school. I am seriously thinking of changing to a regular school. We dont have any family members here who could help with religious studies. Like I said I dont have the knowledge to help my DD.

If you are worried about the heat why dont you take him to the wild life zoo in Sharjah. The spectator area is indoors. Its like walking through a glass tunnel and the animals are kept out door in their natural habitat. It is actually very nice and not as far as AL Ain. They also have a petting zoo which is outdoors. My kids love it and its. http://www.sharjahtourism.ae/en/heritage/museums/arabias-wildlife-centre Have fun!

My Mum is turning 83 on Friday. She did not want any baubles anymore for a present. She wants to experience things..... so have arranged for two tickets on the wonderbus. Last year she got to go up Burj Khalifa, then take the water taxi from Deira to bur Dubai to the old Souk. A quick walk through the souk to one of the oldest restaurants with Arabic food (cant remember the name) but you could sit on the veranda overhanging the creek. Best of all she loves to go dancing.....

Why would it be offensive? Arabic is also the language of many Jews, Christians and other denominations. It does not belong to the Muslims. No one is disputing that the language belongs to a multitude of people/religions, the question was "Given that Arabic is the language of the Quran" would this be offensive?

Yes, I think the Muslims would not appreciate it. Many can read and write Arabic but not understand it so not knowing what it means they may feel you are being disrespectful. But I do have to say, Islam or not, it is disrespectful to write anything on your feet, specially something religious. This would not be a tribute to anything/one. In many cultures the written word is given great respect and feet the opposite.....but then it is your call.

Try one of the 1-10 AED stores in Satwa/Karama/Deira. They have lots of glow in the dark plastic shapes. e.g. stars, moons, flowers, hearts etc. Depending on size they cost about 3-10 AEd per packet and have about 8-10 pcs in each. You could stick them all over the room, ceiling and use them as table decor.

So for the last few years for her birthday she went to Katmandu, had a boat cruise, went up Burj Khalifa, had a family reunion (for her 80th) .....and now I am stumped. What can she do, see, hear that wont cost the world ...

Now the info we got for properties there is very confusing. Some say expats cant buy/own in Sharjah while others said that it was possible with a investment agreement/contract. Can some one who has done this or is in the business clarify this please. We are soooo confused. Though we know of several families who own their own apartments in Sharjah!!??

After a year they offered me a full time time position with all the perks....so keep at it. To begin with it is demoralising but now in retrospect it was great for me. Thanks Asti, and apologies for hijacking your thread Janatks. Hope all goes well with your change of schools. No problem actually this was a question I also had. As we will transfer within Sharjah I wanted to know how long it will take as well. If we give a e.g. 2 months notice can we leave immidiately? or do the children have to stay for those two months. Can one stay for theose two months or does one forfeit the amount paid???

I changed my DD's school because of our financial situation. We chose a school that had great reviews and was not as expensive as their last one. However, since they joined its been one issue after another. Apparently all the teachers/admin staff that made the school good have left and have been replaced by Arab speakers. To accommodate the teachers and children who dont speak English they have adjusted their curriculum and therefore my DD's are repeating stuff they already did two grades ago. I should have realised this when I went to pay they fees and it was so disorganised that it took me 9 hours to get the job done. We were in a sweltering gym with no food or water and if we left to fetch something we would lose our place. No one knew which counter to go to nor was there anyone to give directions. The nail in the coffin was when on the thursday before Eid my husband was a bit late in picking up our DD from her activities because of a really bad traffice jam. The school called and told me that as the father was late so we should pick up our 7 year old DD from the guards room as they could not wait!!! Thank God their old school has agreed to take them back! There used to be info on the website about the school leaving procedure etc but its seems to have been deleted. Does anyone know what the general procedure for schools is and if we will get our money back (if any). Money is still tight for us so we really need this to pay the old school....I really really dont want my DD's to stay in a school that I cannot trust to keep them safe.

There is this great fish restaurant in Sharjah (off Al Khan Road) called Sanober that makes fish like in a fishing village of Lebanon. It is run by a family. Really yummy....Also the Sharjah Beach hotel offers a monthly beach/pool/gym access for couples 650dhs, children above 9 200dhs and children under 9 100dhs. It really comes out cheap if you go a few times a months (we usually are there three to four times a week. Did not feel the heat at all this summer :) Wow! Where exactly is this place? I stay so close by in Al Taawun! its on the road running parallel to the road going to the Aquarium. I know not a very smart description but that is the best I can come up with. Drive from Tawuun along the cornich. when you get to the Aquarium turn right and then take the first right again. You will see some sort of a hotel on your left and then the restaurant called Sonber. Its on the road. Looks like a fishermans roadside cafe with nets and stuff hanging from the roof.

As a perent we do as much as we can to get our children the best benefits of everything, and education is one of the most important things we provide for our children, we do enrol our children in the school to provide what we as parents can not provide, not every parent is academically qualified to teach the children at home, not every one is educated enough to do so, and surly I did encounter parents did not even have the elementary education but their kids are holders of honour degrees....whatever is the reason parents can't/ unable to teach their children is totally up to the parents. The OP is asking over here to have a cross check with any poster able to provide info if she is right about her fears or it's not founded, as a parent of children who had gone throw this I can say this school is not doing their job: education. OP my elder son was the older one in his class when he joined KG1, in KG generally the teach children how to hold the pencil and how to write, by the end of KG1 he was able to read and write 3 and 4 litters words, in KG2 he was able to free write what he wants to write and can read an article in the news paper - I do choose it for him due to age suitability - and now he is in year 1 and moving on ..... You checked with the school and gave you this clumsy response, you need to go to KHDA and the ministry of education, and check for yourself and find out what is supposed to be happening, then you will get your answers. It worth trying to find another school to your child before you go complain about the school, so you can get a decent report from them to be able to move your child from the school in the first place. I am a parent and did not get the same education my children are having, so I do my best, the school they attend is very good at this, they do send instruction with communication book what to do to keep what the kids learnt from school and apply it at home, this is what a responsible school would do, not leaving your child not being educated for 2 years and going to do the same at year 3 in the same school. Be prepared that your girl could re-do the same year she is in as a result of moving her to another responsible school that really do educate children, not only a money drain - TBH all schools are a money drain but some do their job beside that. All the best and good luck thank you, i agree with you. I dont think I will however go to KHDA . Just want to get her someone some place to give her what she needs. I work full day and have three kids. By the time we have a bath, dinner, homework it is time for bed so I cant really do much other than the bedtime story.

I'm confused. You say she will now be going in to Year One aged seven. Do you mean next September? In which case she will be six? Or do you mean she has been held back a year? If she will be starting Year One as she is turning six then that is appropriate and as Cheeky Monkey said, has a lot of advantages. If she will be seven and has been held back, have you asked the school why? You have also said she can't colour. What do you mean? Surely all children can colour once they can grip a pen/crayon etc. Do you mean she can't do draw pictures well? Which would suggest she is still learning her fine motor control and is in no way ready for writing. You also say she does not know her phonics and you have tried. It doesn't happen overnight, play fun games with word sounds in general conversation and when reading to her and she will pick it up gradually. This doesn't need to fall only to you, your husband and her siblings can all do it to. Remember, it's meant to be fun, not drilling her. Do you or anyone else in the family read to her regularly? It's the best things you can do for her learning at her age. In all honesty it sounds like you might be putting your own frustrations/anxieties on to her. Just relax about it, it will help both of you :) she would go to pre-school next setember and then in 2015 to grade one making her 7 when she does. We do read to her and so does her elder sister. She holds her pencil just fine but does not how to colour a picture in. ends up scribbling and giving up in frustration. I guess I am anxious but I see her face and hear her when she complains that she cant do anything and that just gets to me

She keeps insisting she wants to learn how to write and read. I would not worry if I did not feel she was ready for this. She wants/needs more than this school is willing to give her because of 15 days. Can't you guys spend 20 minutes together afternoon or early evening working on learning to read? My parents taught me to read at age 4 not my school and they taught me because I wanted to learn. She does not know her phonics and I have tried.... Doubting Thomas...they were already in a UK curriculum before we came here two years ago so they had no problem with schooling here. I made the mistake of putting her in the European curriculum because I thought we will go back home and she would learn the language (which is the only advantage )

Sorry janatks, I've just realised you are saying she is in school abroad, and coming here and you are worried she is not up to speed? Is that correct? No, she is here in an European curriculum school and she is not up to speed with the rest of the UAE. I dont mind her having a great play time but I can see her frustration when she is with her siblings and other kids who are in the UK system. It breaks my heart. She keeps insisting she wants to learn how to write and read. I would not worry if I did not feel she was ready for this. She wants/needs more than this school is willing to give her because of 15 days.

We were planning on going back home (if we did it would not be a big problem) but now that my husband has started his own business in the UAE we dont see that happening. She will have to integrate herself into the school system here. This school does not offer the full K-12 curriculum. She is also losing a year because she was born in SEP. She will be older than any of her class. 7 iso 6....
