When I was trying to lose weight, if I hit a plateau, I used to do the 3 day diet to kick start weight loss again. It does work but, as everyone keeps saying, it is not a long term solution. Now I think I might use it if my weight starts to creep up again, but eating sensibly and using a smaller plate is probably a better route to take.

Home is actually here for all of us at present and we all agree that for the time being we want to stay together as a family, so.... our son is at Deira International School doing the IBCC, and will come out of it with a BTEC or two, an IBCC certificate and, perhaps even more important, work experience and hopefully some idea of what he wants to do in life. He seems extremely content and has gained a lot of self confidence since the start of the year. Our daughter who did get 2 good A levels but is also not particularly academic is training to be a hairdresser and loving it. Our eldest daughter, who also achieved 2 A levels, is a fully qualified nursery school teacher, again all qualifications gained here in Dubai, and she is now starting study for a degree.

We did it 2 weeks ago with 2 visitors from the UK and it was the same cost for all of us, although I had read somewhere it would be different so I think you should be prepared for that. We paid something like AED35 to leave UAE and AED50 to enter Oman. We went on a Saturday for the day and it was very quiet but still took us 3 hours to reach Khasab.

We had this problem in our office. Can't remember who we used but think you will find that a lot of maintenance companies can sort this for you. The main challenge comes afterwards dealing with the smell of the solvents they have to use.

Hi. Have two post 16s, neither particularly academic. My daughter has just started training as a hairdresser in Knowledge Village; my son is doing the IBCC at Deira International School and I have never seen him so motivated. Keep looking there are good alternatives out there.

I am not a fan of beetroot, but my husband likes this one from Ina Garten: Roasted beetroot salad Ingredients • 12 beets • 3 tablespoons good olive oil • 1 1/2 teaspoons fresh thyme leaves, minced • 2 teaspoons kosher salt • 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper • 2 tablespoons raspberry vinegar • Juice of 1 large orange Directions Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Remove the tops and the roots of the beets and peel each one with a vegetable peeler. Cut the beets in 1 1/2-inch chunks. (Small beets can be halved, medium ones cut in quarters, and large beets cut in eighths.) Place the cut beets on a baking sheet and toss with the olive oil, thyme leaves, salt, and pepper. Roast for 35 to 40 minutes, turning once or twice with a spatula, until the beets are tender. Remove from the oven and immediately toss with the vinegar and orange juice. Sprinkle with salt and pepper and serve warm.

In the past, whilst we would compensate for paid leave not taken, we would not pay for a flight that never happened. We also always arranged flights to make sure we got the best deals.

Agree with Desert Rose on this one. Watch to make sure your child is coping and offer support where necessary, and of course stay in close touch with teachers at the school. This situation is not unique, particularly in this part of the world where there is such diversity. We had similar issue years ago when we adopted a 4-year old non-English speaker. We started her off in a nursery where there were others speaking her language as well as English and then progressed to a British curriculum school. You will be amazed how quickly they learn. Within 6 weeks our daughter had enough words for basic communication and the only issue we ever had in the British system was that, because she had never been in the UK, there were gaps in her knowledge and vocabulary. For example, how can a child who has always been in this region know about the seasons? She wasn't however alone in this as lots of British children in Dubai have never actually lived in the UK either. More telling in our case were the sad times when she was asked to take in pictures of herself when she was a baby - and of course we had none!!

Agree worth doing a price comparison on these mattresses as they aren't cheap. We have a Silentnight Regency Visco Ultimate Supreme and it's such a joy to lie down on!! We got 30% off ours from HomesRUs at Mazaya Centre in one of their sales last year.

Event management - have heard good things about EMDI and looked at it for my daughter, also not particularly academic, but not an option in this case. Yes, we have explored return to UK to vocational training leading to apprenticeship/ employment but feel that support for learning can be better provided in structured home environment, ie here, so have not gone that route yet. Thanks for responses to date - we WILL find an appropriate solution I am certain.

We recently renewed 3 children's passports at the IPS office in Liverpool, and on one of them the picture (taken here) was not accepted and we had to have another taken in UK. In IPS office they confirmed that as new photo taken was easily identifiable as that in the passport (even though it was a child) no counter signatory was required at all!! OK this is not the same as applying by post but think this indicates that provided you are convincing in what you provide it will be accepted.

Ladies, thank you for your input. Our elder daughter took lessons 4 years ago with Bel Hasa. Our concern was that whilst the standard of instruction was sufficient to pass the test successfully it did not come close to equipping her for the everyday challenges of driving here - or anywhere else for that matter. I had hoped over time things would have changed, but from what you tell me nothing has!

When they were younger I felt Dubai was a brilliant place for our children to grow up - good lifestyle, lots of choices, exposure to different nationalities, etc, etc. Now they are teenagers I have changed my mind. We live relatively modestly, our kids are not spoilt and we do actively look for ways to help them become independent but compared to teenagers back in the UK they are very limited in their exposure to what I would term real life and will find it very hard to adjust when they eventually leave. I wouldn't hesitate to stay in the UK if the deciding factor is your daughter and her education. There are good secondary schools here of course, but education is more than just about schooling and equally about exposure to real life and its issues in a more realistic environment than perhaps Dubai can offer to expat youngsters at the present time.

I personally think the Al Safa Co-op has made considerable progress in the range of products it has available that now seem to match most of the other supermarkets including their meat section and the way their meat is butchered; their standards of hygiene and that of customer service. Best of all their prices have always been very competitive and seem to have remained so. I think they are making a rapid transition from being an 'Arab' supermarket to one that appeals to all nationalities.

Jason Vale 3-day detox works for me. I do it every couple of weeks. My favourite cucumber/celery/lemon/apple and fresh ginger. I personally am not a fan of beetroot but if you mix with lemon it helps. Good luck with your weight loss. Have lost 20 kg in the past 12 months and feel a new woman. Little by little is the answer and losses soon mount up, otherwise you may end up with very saggy skin!!

We did it about 15 years ago when we were living in Muscat and yes it was deadly boring apart from the bits at either end. We had 3 drivers in the car and 3 small children and took turns 200 kms each. If you want excitement you could consider going down the coastal route if it is still open. Some friends of ours did this some years back but it is not for the faint hearted and you need to be very well prepared

You could consider a short juice detox to get you started, but if you can't stick to it you will end up feeling a failure and it's not a very sustainable way to lose weight. Have lost approx 15 kgs over the past 9 months. For me the things that helped most were not changing what I ate radically but using a smaller dinner plate, ie eating much smaller portions; not depriving myself entirely of the things I love to eat but shouldn't, instead having them in moderation as a reward for weight loss; taking each day at a time; and since December, when I started to struggle, joining a local slimming club so I was accountable to someone who, if I didn't lose weight regularly would, oh so politely but very firmly, get me back on track. Now of course I have the challenge of keeping the weight off but for now this sorts itself when I look at my 'before' picture stuck on the fridge, listen to the compliments I get and think how high my energy levels are. I'm in my late 50s, so no spring chicken, and I just wish I'd done this years ago, so decide what works for you and do it. Good luck.

Hi my two 17 year olds have seen this and think it's wonderful and want to see it again. They both however said it has a lot of cold-blooded killing in it and apparently that's the 'game' - you either kill or get killed. Some of it's a bit gory as well. I personally won't let my 12 year old see it until I can get hold of a copy for him to watch at home with us. We can then switch it off if necessary.

We have a sturdy wooden table and 6 chairs that our kids used to use that you can have at minimal cost if you want. Our kids are now teenagers and these items have been sitting in the garage for years. Minor repairs and a good coat of paint would be required. If interested just let me know and I can send photo.

This morning bright and early took my daughter's friend to T3 for flight back to her home. Amazed, having checked in online, we stood in a queue for approx 50 minutes for baggage drop. Less than 50% of the desks in the section we chose were manned, only one of those being a baggage drop desk, and one of the check-in staff actually got up and left with no one replacing her - think ears must have been burning at some of the things that were said by waiting passengers as she marched past them. When I asked one of the supervisors why so many desks unmanned he didn't even bother to reply. I wandered round the rest of the check-ins in the Departures Hall and they were all much the same, large queues and 50% or less of the desks manned. Best of it is that as entertainment while you wait, you can watch the multicolour screens behind the check-in desks extolling the virtues of Emirates and its services, one of which says 'Don't stand in a queue. Check in on-line...... ' !!!!!!!!!!

We have a pure bred saluki that we adopted as a puppy from the vets where they were treating him after he had been found with a broken front leg. We have had him 4 years now. Apart from being totally gorgeous to look at and extremely elegant, despite his crooked leg, he has the sweetest disposition I have ever seen in a dog. He is playful but not rough, cuddles up to anyone who doesn't mind having a sizeable canine akin to a baby giraffe with long spindly legs draped all around them, and is totally loveable. My only concern with him is that he may break his leg again, apparently salukis are prone to this, and he is a hunting dog and can never be let off a lead unless he's out in the desert because if he sees something to chase he takes off like the wind. As for a saluki mix, I think it would depend what the mix was.

... http://www.saruhanhotel.com/ It's small and basic but clean, comfortable, affordable and close to everything. It's about a one minute walk from Kucuk Aya Sophia with it's lovely local artisans and tea house; lots of great local shops and restaurants and ten mins (uphill!) walk to Aya Sophia, Blue Mosque etc. The hotel has a lovely top floor terrace where they serve breakfast overlooking the water. Have often thought with all the talented ladies there are in Dubai who wouldn't want to work full time but could work either part-time or on time limited projects, or more from home rather than in an office, that there should be a special site where people could visit to find such positions. As I understand it, if you are sponsored by your husband and are able to get a labour card from the company you are working for, the hours you work are not important, and it is legal. Any comments anybody??
