yes we own ours too, the application will be signed by you, but the contractor will sort out the submissions and processing. there are restrictions, ie on slope, depth etc, set by municipality and emaar, but none that will be of a real problem when designing your pool. what is the one they are telling you about that is causing a problem?

sue62, i dont know what time you leave your house, but coming out of saheel between 7.30 & 8, it already takes a long time with queues backing up past gate 1, let alone if you cut out that exit as well. if they are planning on a new access then that's fine, but not to cancel it completely!

i have just written to Emaar on this, what on earth are they thinking?? it's going to cause a major bottleneck up to that R/A, as everyone tries to go to motor city, onto Em rd, umm suq st, honestly, do they ever think of practicalities?? lets wait and see what they reply. if anything they should be adding free flowing exits onto umm suq st!!

Enasoso - the contractor should offer to help you obtain the necessary permissions from EMAAR, you have to apply for permission, pay 5000 + 1000, 5000 for the works, 1000 for putting in a safty fence, if you do both according to the plans submitted, you will be refunded in full. we ended up with absolute pools as silver fox couldnt fit us in for several months they were so busy. what we did do was supply our own tiles, we werent that keen on any they had, but it depends on what you are looking for, we were just very picky!! we have also changed from chlorine to salt chlorine which is much nicer. also i would def recoemmend you put in a heater/chiller, then you really can use it all year

Thanks ladies. Sorry i should have explained, he has always been a thumb sucker and always gone to nursery, and he is generally happy there. Its just been in the last month or so that his teacher has told me that he is not jning in as much. He is generally happy and smiley, so to me its more tiredness and habit. Maybe he is bored in his class?

Joyce, if it was only at home or at night, i wouldnt be bothered, but it has started to be nearly all the time! We have talked about it, and i've taken him to the dentist to see if she told him to stop it would work, his teacher tries also, but nothing doing. So maybe the stop suck will be the only way....any tips on how to actually go about it would help! I can see himreally throwing a tantrum over it all!

He is 3 1/2 and has started to suck his thumb all the time, even when he's at nursery, so much so that he is not joining in with everything. Any tips on how to make him stop? Whats not helping is that he's also waking up early, so is more tired....seems a bit of a vicious cycle. Any ideas would be appreciated, thanks

not those of us who work!!! it is fine, you need to have access to water and shade, then you can at least get outside either first thing or late afternoon. there are other indoorsy things you can do, get a membership to dubai aquarium, little explorers, some of the good play places, summer camps also run at most nurseries, and weekends away are nice and cheap with special offers on...so its not all bad! think of it as the reverse of a really harsh european winter

olive oil is the best thing, even as a barrier. no soap needed for the first few months either, we only started once they were mobile and eating solids

congrats!! white noise was our solution - i put a stand up fan in both the kids rooms, which helps anyway with air circulation, and that did the trick most of the time. sometimes however, this won't work and you will just have to grin and bear it. it IS tough with 2 who are close in age (i have 2 DS 20 months apart) but I promise it does get easier! now DS2 is nearly 2, they are having such fun together, and that really started as soon as DS2 became mobile. so it's worth it, just try to think of it as a very short period of time in their overall lives...good luck! ETA, your babyweight will drop off in no time with 2 DSs to run after!!! edited by JulesLC on 26/03/2012

hi, welcome. first choice you have to make is concrete vs fibreglass. there are pros and cons to both. for concrete, i would recommend silver fox. for fibreglass, absolute pools. HTH

we used Ken from Baby Secur 050 559 8097. did an excelent job, and has fences in different colours - we chose a pale grey which is really nice, much less imposing than black. we looked into Aquanet and had a demo - found it a really pain to put on and off, so much so that we couldnt envisage just popping in for a quick swim after work for example. The fence is also easily removeable, like 5 mins or so, so equally flexible

Speaking as someone who regularly goes out alone to restaurants (hubby works a lot) with 2 kids (1 and 4) and travels back to US alone with them once a year, for the most part, it works. But like so many have said before, your kid could have one of those moments and when you've done the best you can and it's still not working. Reminds me of my flight back here to DXB past August. 1st flight was great, both kids angelic. 2nd flight, I'm on no sleep, exhausted from keeping the peace and keeping cranky kids happy in 15th hour of travel, and 4 year old was just not in the mood to listen or stop doing laps (running) around the cabin. No matter what I did, I couldn't get him to settle down until he got knocked down by a flight attendant (unintentionally and he wasn't even fazed by it) shortly before landing and it was utter **** trying to keep him restrained in his seat with his seatbelt fastened while also balancing infant on my lap who is now squirming to get out, all while not yelling and making a scene that would disturb other passengers. Sometimes he can be really difficult and that was one of those times. The flight attendant who knocked him down said, "Didn't you bring anything for him to do?" And I almost lost it because I had done EVERYTHING you're "supposed" to do to keep kids busy - the new toys, the DVDs, the coloring, the snacks, the whole 9 yards and then some. It worked for 3/4 of the trip. And then he was done. Aren't we after doing a long trip with the security checks and multiple flights and waiting (even if it's only 1 1/2 hours) during your stopover? What do we expect from a kid? They just can't express their frustration and exhaustion in the same way as an adult. I wanted to yell, "Have a little respect - I'm doing the best I can, I'm not perfect". But in reality, it made me so upset that I cried. The comment and the looks I got from a few other people directly told me they all assumed I'm that type of lax mother who doesn't care if her kid runs wild. And that could not be farther from the truth. I think what people forget is, some people really are doing their best to keep their kids under control and not disturb others around them, but sometimes, all **** breaks loose. It doesn't mean necessarily that the parent doesn't do anything or doesn't care, but it's so easy to look at someone and make a snap judgment. We have absolutely no idea where they're coming from, what other issues are causing this behavior, what the parent has already done to try and rectify the situation, or even, can you get out of there (a plane? where can you go). The last thing someone needs is our "well I would be handling this differently, you too." I've learned in these rare instances, ignore the judge judy's out there and do the best you can.[/quote [color=#000000'>well said. am doing a solo flight in june with a 2 & 3 yr old!! yikes! adding to my earlier comments, i think it all depends on the type of place too - we only really take ours to restaurants in malls or something like the lime tree, its very rarely in a hotel, only at lunch or tea (ie 5pm) and NEVER at night, even when we're on holiday, they are in bed by 7! i was wondering when someone was going to talk about a flight, such a tricky situation, even i would feel like screaming the house down after a 15 hour trip!!! we once sat next to a lady who's son was going made, she was having to physically hold him down, he was no more than 2 years old, she kept yelling at the flight attendant, coffee, bring coffe - not for her though as it turned out - seems the little man was hooked on coffee! poor little thing, once he had his coffee, he calmed down...really makes you wonder. edited by JulesLC on 20/03/2012[/color'> edited by JulesLC on 20/03/2012 edited by JulesLC on 20/03/2012

wow you all have very well behaved kids!! mine are well disciplined, but even they have their off days, so i dont think we should be so hard on ourselves!!! they\'re not robots after all. i think it would all depend on how long the screaming lasted, and if the parent was alone with more than one child or not edited by JulesLC on 18/03/2012

sometimes easier said than done keeping your children quiet - as a mother of 2 young boys, sometimes they are angelic, and sometimes they want to destroy everything! if you have 2 and you're alone, its not so easy to walk out staightaway when they kick off....thats why you chose your venue carefully and hope for the best! so instead of always criticising, spare a thought for the parent who is probably even more distraught than you are...

we have just gone through the hiring process for a driver (his 1st day today!! ) salaries range vastly from 2500 to 4500, depending on nationality, experience and on how important they think they are!!!! i did come across a few lady drivers, calling themselves nanny drivers - could be an option if you feel your helper is not up to looking after the kids? they were around 3500 i think for that sort of driver. depending on how big your house is ie villa or apartment, it could be that you could get away with hiring 1 lady who can take care of the house and drive to do pick ups etc and she would keep them entertained in the afternoon. not sure where that would leave your current lady. depends on your budget really! BTW drivers are usually happy to live out, if youre in jumeirah you may find they are happy to live with their wives or families, we found several like that, but we're in AR so the commute was too far from Jum or satwa to us HTH

age gap between my 2 DS is 20 months, we got DS1 a Thomas wooden train set, he loved it. good thing is that you can then add on track, carriages etc at a later date..... just as an addition, its hard work at the beginning, but now its the best thing as they are little monkeys together!!! DS2 will be 2 on may 1...time flies!!! good luck with it all!

Hi spicey pepper I work full time and have 2 Ds both in nursery. DS 1 will start big school in Sep so there will be 2 locations for pick up/drop off. DH and I have thought about all options, and the only failsafe one that we can rely on is to have a helper and driver. As you have probably gatherred, you have to be very careful with part time anything, you can only hire from agencies. we worked out that the cost of a driver via an agency, would come to pretty much the same as a full time salary, so we opted for full time so we have the added benefit of having an extra pair of hands to help ie odd jobs, helping in garden/pool, running errands like servicing the cars etc...and our helper who is great, full of energy, does the housework in the morning and plays with the kids in the afternoon, we are in a villa, so have made sure there is loads for them to do, both indoor and outdoor without them having to leave the house. re the summer, we try to get away for 2 weeks usually in auguest when its worse, but the key is shade and water play!! get them outside in swimmers, either in a pool (can be a paddling pool even) or some osrt of sprinkler or something. after 4pm this can work. pre 4pm, you are a bit limited, you can have some downtime post school, quitet play, homework for your older one or something. you may find your helper loves it!! its a really tough one though, not the perfect solution (that would be me working part time mornings only for the same salary!!!) but we have to do the best we can - i try to be home by 5, so in the summer we can even go out somewhere together as its light and warm later, and still be home for a 7pm bedtime. good luck

thanks gingercat - that's the place i've been looking at, and i am surprised at how expensive it it! we are travelling with 2 young children so we can't rough it too much (they will be 2 & 3 when we go),. the flights alone add up to a lot when x by 4!!! do you know of a particular island/area? i have been focusing on koh samui as that is good weather wise in the summer....
