That's correct - I was on a visit visa and had my international license so it wasn't a problem but even though DH had international license, he could not drive once he had entered on entry visa. You have to have your visa before you can get your UAE license so he had about 2 weeks or so before he was able to drive legally.

We went through this a couple of months ago - DH came in on an entry visa and was told by Thrifty that he could not drive while visa was being processed so I did the driving as I came on visit visa. We had UK and International Licenses - Thrifty were adamant that we would be breaking the law if DH drove so bear that in mind. DH went for his medical etc which was all completed in an hour then about 10 days later he got his visa and was able to have the paperwork prepared for sponsoring me. I had to fly out the country to Muscat which was the closest place (with my entry permit paperwork) - Air Arabia from Sharjah - when booking online for the morning flight, it looked like there was only 45 mins between the plane landing in Muscat and the next one taking off back to Sharjah - YOU DO HAVE TIME TO MAKE THIS CONNECTION - I didn't think there would be enough time so sat at the airport all day for a flight back at 6.30pm! The same plane that lands in Muscat is the one that goes straight back to Sharjah and you don't even need to go through immigration, just proceed straight to flight connections. The reason for flying out and back in is so the eye scan can be done on your arrival back - this is part of the entry process. I then had my medical etc done and paid an extra 150dhs (approx) for my visa to be done in a couple of days. Note that once I had flown back into Sharjah, I could not drive until I had my visa. Hope all this helps and it's worth knowing about flying out of Dubai especially if you have children to consider too - if you have the option to wait until your DH has his visa so you can arrive in Dubai on entry visas for yourself and children, it might be more economical. edited by julie3mac on 21/04/2012

We were in the same situation regarding a Qatar flight we booked for our DS from UK to Hong Kong. All sorted with a visit to Qatar's office in Hong Kong with the copy of the ticket and credit card. I then had to fax a form that Qatar stamped to DS for him to show at check-in. I think I actually got this info from the Qatar website.

Cornish Pixie has said that if DH's position is manager or above then we don't - his title is Production Manager.

Also - we will be living in Umm al Quwain, does this make a difference where we would get the licenses converted?

Thanks Cornish Pixie - so much useful information! His title is Production Manager. Also we have been sent a copy of the Entry Permit and company will send original to the airport for our arrival next week so I am presuming they will stamp his passport on entry. It's not so much of a problem to sort his driving license that day - just waiting to hear back from the rental company if he can be added to the insurance later that day or we just do taxis for a few hours till we sort all this!

Many thanks for that. We actually both had eye tests done last week in the UK - can we take that prescription or does it have to be a UAE optician?

Thanks for the reply - DH working in UAQ hence the villa there. Also for car rental - I was actually referring to renting a car as soon as we arrive so I know we need the International Driving License to do that and will get the UAE driving license as soon as visa comes through. Sorry, probably my fault, I talk about Dubai loosely, should really have been more specific! UK nationals so I think it's quite straight forward to the transfer of license after residency.

Thanks S. It's no problem - we are still here, well an hour or so from Hong Kong so not too much of an issue, but just as well it occurred to me before we leave! I will contact the UAE Embassy in HK and see if they can clarify things as well. Have also been in touch with a company in the UK to do DH's degree certificate. Many thanks for your help:)

My boys went to Sedbergh School in Cumbria http://www.sedberghschool.org/ - can't praise the school enough! Still have 2 nephews also at the school. They are a full 7 day boarding school and only 1.5 hours from Manchester. If you want any more info from a parent's perspective, just let me know - I would be very happy to help!

As long as you come with an open mind, have been here 3 years and before that South East Asia for 11 years. Dubai has a lot to offer if you are prepared to look for it. Not everything costs a fortune and you make your own decisions about what your children do, my daughter has only been to the ski park once! in all the time we have been here. Look for the local culture it won't come looking for you. The museum has a nominal charge, the beaches are free, it maybe hot but get up early and go, the camel racing is free, as is the horse racing at Jebel Ali and a nominal charge at Meydan. Look out for world class events such as the showjumping and golf, they are often free of charge. The Abra on the creek is a dirham looking around the souks is a great way to spend a couple of hours as is walking the creek as well as seeing the 'old Dubai' and of course there is the desert at sunrise/sunset. It is difficult to adjust to because it is not home, the driving is manic at times but persevere and enjoy the experience that you have been presented with. Would be happy to talk to you when you get here. We will have been 4 years in China by the time we move and definitely into looking for the local culture - it's what we have done here! (I have joked on this forum before about wanting camels in the garden when we move!LOL!) Just looking forward to a different way of life and all that the Emirates have to offer. For me, one of the main positives will be having people to talk to IN ENGLISH! Don't speak Chinese and we are in a pretty rural part here! We have been in Dubai several times recently (and back again for a few days next week) and have always made a point of going round the back streets, investigating the local places and, not being able to drive in China, I am actually looking forward to the challenge of Dubai driving! Wherever we are, I am one of those who's glass is always half full dwelling on all the positives new places have to offer because let's face it, there will always be some negitives, but that's life! :)

We are not moving until the beginning of next year but will be interested to hear how your move goes. Where are you moving from? I have been reading threads on here for a while now and it's interesting to hear the variety of posts, concerns, questions etc and the different replied also very helpful too in alot of cases. I guess you just have to throw yourself into everything when you arrive and see how you get on! Good luck, keep in touch!:)

We are due to move to Dubai at the beginning of next year. We currently live in a fairly rural part of China and will have been here for 4 years by the time we leave. Everyone is different with their hopes and expectations and I agree with the posts that say those who have gone back to the UK will big it up but I am looking forward to (all being well) becoming one of those who will love Dubai. We have visited alot and have good friends there. Can't see me being one who seeks out the Malls and designer wardrobe and frequent pampering sessions (although some would be nice!) - if we had the opportunity, I would probably opt for camels and goats in the garden!!! LOL! but seriously I think life is what you make it and alot to do with the people you are with. I lived in Scotland and small town mentality and everyone knowing what everyone else was up to used to drive me insane! Those same people now probably think our lifestyle is mad but we love it! 4 years in China will have been enough for us but returning to live in the UK is the last thing I would do! Having said that my kids are grown up and at Uni in the UK so I don't have some of the concerns that others do. I used to get a bit concerned reading threads like this one with so many people talking about moving back but I am very heartened to hear of the ones who love Dubai life! I am really looking forward to it!:) It will be QUITE a change for you then. Rural China to Dubai! Best of luck!:) Thanks! I think if we can live in China for 4 years (without speaking Chinese and without the locals round here speaking English & fend for ourselves without help!!) then we can pretty much hack it anywhere! My charades are pretty good now!!:)

Hand held, not pre-installed. Good to know there are Tom Tom maps available. I had emailed Tom Tom a while back but they told me that no maps were available!! We are due to move at the beginning of next year from China, have not driven in my 4 years here and having visited Dubai many times recently, think I will need all the help I can get to know my way around!!! Many thanks for your help:)
